Individual buildings are designed as simple, archetypal forms: gable-ended houses, oast-houses, boxes, farm sheds. To make larger buildings these simple forms can be extruded or aggregated into clusters.

01
We have introduced two organisational axes that connect together elements of landscape Around these two axes the buildings are clustered like a small settlement, breaking down the mass of their forms and creating an environment that can be explored. The buildings are simple vernacular or archetypal forms, each clad in natural materials that are assembled using different methods: clay tile, shingle, woven branches, cut lengths of sapling, latticed timber, thatch and plants. These are materials that naturally age, are easily repaired, can encourage the growth of mosses and lichen, forming nesting places for birds and insects. Each building has an identifiable presence and character, but at the same time blend into the surrounding landscape. The near and the distant are brought in to dialogue with each other and the presence of the lakes takes on greater prominence in the experience of the visitor. 01 Building cladding materials. 02 Aerial view showing relationship between building & landscape. 03 View of elevated boardwalk looking over west lake, with end of upper level studio space visible. Lower level restaurant with rammed earth walls & external seating area. 01
