NY Origins of Capt. John Brown the Grandfather of Jacob Brown Documents that Capt. John Brown (Revolution War) was born, married, and later died in NY and not in Connecticut as has commonly been reported in various post-Civil War era publications. Capt. John Brown is the known father of Owen Brown (2nd son) and Grandfather of the Abolitionist John Brown. Capt. John Brown is the possible father of John Brown (1st son) and Grandfather of Jacob Brown. *According to the Jacob Brown Civil War era family traditions, Jacob Brown is a relative (1 st cousin) to the Abolitionist John Brown. ** The Abolitionist John Brown’s father Owen Brown was buried in 1856 at Summit, Ohio. John Brown the (possible) older brother of Owen Brown and father of Jacob Brown was buried 1841 in Morgan County Ohio. The Abolitionist John Brown was buried in North Elba, NY in 1859 [not in Connecticut]. Jacob Brown a 1st Cousin (by family tradition) of the Abolitionist John Brown was buried in 1868 at Cherry Valley, Illinois. *The currently publish and accepted genealogy of the Abolitionist John Brown tracing a heritage to the Mayflower voyager Peter Browne is known to be inaccurate and implausible in at least two places. Including the known fact that the Peter Browne of the Mayflower had two daughters and no known son. -- The comment that the Abolitionist John Brown made in his letter regarding having a Mayflower ancestor was in regard that his Grandfather (Capt. John Brown) having married a Mayflower descendant. ~ David Anson Brown May 19, 2011
Note: Jacob Brown Sr. family tradition is that our Brown family is related to the Abolitionist John Brown. It places family tradition at odds with written Civil War History except that the existing Abolitionist John Brown family records are known to be incomplete and somewhat inaccurate.
Note: The oldest and most reliable family document [that I haven’t seen] is the family will of John Brown (abt. 1767- abt. 1841) [possible son of Capt. John Brown] the father of Jacob Brown Sr. The will of John Brown mentions five family members a wife Mary, two sons John Brown (Jr.), Jacob Brown and two daughters Christina and Sarah.
