2 Chronicles 7:13-15 (KJV) If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people; 14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 15 Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attend unto the prayer that is made in this place. America was a land that was founded and settled by praying Christians. You don't hear that much today, but it is true. Our first President, George Washington, was not only a Christian but he also kept a Prayer Journal. One of his entries read: "O eternal and everlasting God, I presume to present myself this morning before thy Divine majesty, beseeching thee to accept of my humble and hearty thanks .... Direct my thoughts, words and work. Wash away my sins in the immaculate blood of the Lamb, and purge my heart by thy Holy Spirit, from the dross of my natural corruption, that I may with more freedom of mind and liberty of will serve thee, the ever lasting God, in righteousness and holiness
this day, and all the days of my life. Increase my faith in the sweet promises of the Gospel. Give me repentance from dead works. Pardon my wanderings, & direct my thoughts unto thyself, the God of my salvation. Teach me how to live in thy fear, labor in thy service, and ever to run in the ways of thy commandments. Make me always watchful over my heart, that neither the terrors of conscience, the loathing of holy duties, the love of sin, nor an unwillingness to depart this life, may cast me into a spiritual slumber. But daily frame me more and more into the likeness of thy son Jesus Christ, that living in thy fear, and dying in thy favor, I may in thy appointed time attain the resurrection of the just unto eternal life. Bless my family, friends & kindred unite us all in praising & glorifying thee in all our works begun, continued, and ended, when we shall come to make our last account before thee blessed Savior, who hath taught us thus to pray, our Father." Of those who signed the Declaration of Independence, four of them were pastors or the sons of pastors. They were active in their respective Churches. The United States Department of the Interior published a book called Signers of the Declaration: Historic Places Commemorating the Signing of the Declaration of Independence. On page 27 it states: "Except for Charles Carroll, a Roman Catholic, and a few Deists, every one subscribed to Protestantism". In a companion book called Signers of the Constitution: Historic Places Commemorating the Signing of the Constitution we read on page 138: "In terms of
religious affiliation, the men mirrored the overwhelmingly Protestant character of American religious life at the time and were members of various denominations. Only two, Carroll and Fitzsimons, were Roman Catholics". Our country was founded largely by Christians who prayed and obeyed the God of the Scripture. If our country had been founded by any other than practicing and praying Christians, we would not have the freedoms that we have in America today. Why? Only Christianity holds the free will choice of every person to be sacred. The Bible says "whosoever will" shall be saved, if they will call on the Lord Jesus Christ (Mark 8:34-35; 1 John 5:1; Romans 10:11; Romans 9:33; Acts 10:43; John 3:15-16; John 12:46). Christianity's commitment to religious freedom designed a government that is supposed to protect the free decision of every citizen so that they can accept or reject the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It's our turn. Will you make a commitment to the Lord and covenant with me to pray for our nation, our community, our families, and our local Church? For the next forty days I am asking each of you to join me in prayer every day for the next Forty Days. Begin your day by reading the devotional for that day, then ask God to guide you through your day. At the end of the day, write down how God has helped you in this journal. I invite you to partner with me and the Almighty: Let's change our nation and our community through prayer!

Day one "Guard jealously your relationship to God. Jesus prayed "that they may be one, even as we are one" nothing between. Keep all the life perennially open to Jesus Christ, don't pretend with Him. Are you drawing your life from any other source than God Himself? If you are depending upon anything but Him, you will never know when He is gone. Being born of the Spirit means much more than we generally take it to mean. It gives us a new vision and keeps us absolutely fresh for everything by the perennial supply of the life of God. "Through the centuries men have displayed many different symbols to show that they are Christians. They have worn marks in the lapels of their coats, hung chains about their necks, even had special haircuts. .... there is a much better sign — a mark that has not been thought up just as a matter of expediency for use on some special occasion or in some specific era. It is a universal mark that is to last through all the ages of the church till Jesus comes back. What is this mark?
"What a dreadful delusion hath prevailed over the greater part of mankind, in supposing that they are not called to a state of prayer! whereas all are capable of prayer, and are called thereto, as all are called to and are capable of salvation. Prayer is the application of the heart to God, and the internal exercise of love. Paul hath enjoined us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17), and our Lord saith, “I say unto you all, watch and pray” (Mark 13:33, 37): all therefore may, and all ought to practice prayer. ... Let all pray: we should live by prayer, as we should live by love."3 Pray For: Increased morality in America, our economy, those stricken with illness, those who protect us. Pray for our school children and our teachers.
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (John 13:33-35)2
Pray For: That God will give me practical ways in which to show my "mark" to the world. How can I love those at work, in the marketplace, and at home? Lord, show me.

And if this be true of ordinary days, how much more of those days which decide destiny, which are the watershed of life, and in which plans are concluded which may affect all after-years!"4
"But we trusted . . . and beside all this, today is the third day. . ." (Luke 24:21) Every fact that the disciples stated was right; but the inferences they drew from those facts were wrong. Anything that savors of dejection spiritually is always wrong. If depression and oppression visit me, I am to blame; God is not, nor is anyone else. Dejection springs from one of two sources - I have either satisfied a lust or I have not. Lust means - I must have it at once. Spiritual lust makes me demand an answer from God, instead of seeking God Who gives the answer."1
Pray For: Increased faithfulness in my walk with the Savior. Pray that God will meet not only my needs, but will use me in meeting the needs of others. Pray for the sick, and particularly the lost who do not believe the Gospel.

Pray For: That God will be glorified through out our nation. That America will bless God, so God will bless America. That sin will be forgiven, and we will be a people of forgiveness. That Satan and all evil be destroyed, for God's glory and our sake.

I went into one house and found nine women on their knees in the kitchen crying out to God. ... On the following Sunday, the road was black with the people walking two miles to the church. ... This is God at work. A God sent revival is always a revival of holiness."5
"Children, draw near to your Father, and He will embrace you in the arms of love! Come, ye poor, stray, wandering sheep, return to your Shepherd! Come, sinners, to your Savior! Come, ye dull, ignorant, and illiterate, ye who think yourselves the most incapable of prayer! ye are more peculiarly called and adapted thereto. Let all without exception come, for Jesus Christ hath called all. Prayer is the guide to perfection and the sovereign good; it delivers us from every vice, and obtains us every virtue; for the one great means to become perfect, is to walk in the presence of God."3
Pray For: Revival in our hearts. Pray that God would set my soul on fire, and that He would use me to bring revival to my family, my Church, my community, and my country.

Because a man is a man, he is to be loved at all cost. So, when Jesus gives the special command to love our Christian brothers, it does not negate the other command. ... We are not to choose between loving all men as ourselves and loving the Christian in a special way. The two commands reinforce each other."2
"For one hundred and twenty years that the ark was building, {Noah} labored to get men to believe in God's righteousness. He did not get one, and I said, "What have I to be discouraged about after that?" So I went down to the prayer-meeting, and a man behind me clasped me by the hand, and said. "Pray for me, for I am in great trouble." And I thought what would Noah have given for encouragement like that! .... Be strong and very courageous if you would do anything for God."6 Pray For: That discouragement in my life will be replaced with courage as I look to the Lord. That God will use me and others to be encouragers so that God would be glorified.
Pray For: An increased awareness of the value of life throughout America. For the abolition of abortion, for care of the elderly, and that love will grow in my heart.

Pray For: Those in authority, that they will be driven not by greed but by God. Pray for our businesses, our workers, the jobless. Pray for the children. Pray that God will inspire me and our Church to practical ways to help those in need.

Pray For: That my heart will be fixed on serving my Lord. That I will remember that my days are numbered, and that I have little time left to serve the Lord. That I will teach others that which I have learned for the glory of God.
Day seventeen "The blessing of such persevering prayer is unspeakable. There is nothing so heart-searching as the prayer of faith. It teaches you to discover and confess, and give up everything that hinders the coming of the blessing; everything there may be not in accordance with the Father’s will. It leads to closer fellowship with Him who alone can teach to pray, to a more entire surrender to draw nigh under no covering but that of the blood, and the Spirit. It calls to a closer and more simple abiding in Christ alone. Christian! give God time. He will perfect that which concerneth you."8 Pray For: Patience in my walk with God, and courage during its valleys. Pray for others suffering, that God will lead them to His mountaintop. Pray that God will be glorified.
Day eighteen "Sin brings judgment; confession brings forgiveness. Daniel confessed his personal sin and the sin of his nation in Daniel 9:4-7 and 20. If we want to see this nation turn towards God, it is vital that each person reading this go individually before God and confess personal sin. ... "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). There is no sin none that is beyond God's forgiveness. .... ask God to have mercy {for our nation}"9 Pray For: America, it's leaders in Congress and in the Justice Department. Pray for our State, that God will guide the Governor and our representatives. Pray that His Kingdom come. Pray that we as His children live for Him.

Pray For: Lift God up in praise. Ask Him what you can do today to show Him and the world how much you love Him. Pray that His Kingdom come. Pray that America return to godliness. Pray that God is glorified.

Pray For: That America will return to the God of the Bible. It is He Who established us, and He Who will once more save us.

Day twenty four Have you ever wondered why a pigeon walks so funny? It's so it can see where it's going. A pigeon's eyes can't focus as it moves, so the bird actually has to bring its head to a complete stop between steps in order to refocus. It proceeds clumsily—head forward, stop, head back, stop. In our spiritual walk with the Lord, we have the same problem as the pigeon: We have a hard time seeing while we're on the go. We need to stop between steps—to pause and refocus on the Word and the will of God.13 Pray For: My focus in life. Am I putting God first? Am I caring for my family both physically as well as spiritually? Am I setting a good example for my family to follow? As I grow in Christ, those who know me will grow as well.

Day twenty six Keep prayer simple. Simple prayers can be acceptable to God. We try to say too much and we start to ramble. If you keep going for hours and feel you are not finished, you might not be keeping your prayer simple. The nature of faith is simple and so is prayer. Nothing about it is complicated. God is simple. Remember when Moses asked God who He was, He simply said "I AM!" Simple prayers lead to a simple life. Pray about everything. No that is not a contradiction of the above! Our lives will be more complicated if we do not ask or get Got involved. 14 Pray For: America, our soldiers and police, our community, our local Church, my sick friends and family, that my walk with Jesus will grow closer every day.

But he who wins with heaven is the man who grasps the rope boldly and pulls continuously, with all his might."11 Pray For: The unity of every local Church. The work of our local and foreign missionaries. That every member of the local Church be impressed with the knowledge that we are all called to be missionaries. Ask God how I can fulfill His Great Commission - and ask for strength to do what He says.
Day twenty eight "Almighty God, Who has given us this good land for our heritage; We humbly beseech Thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of Thy favor and glad to do Thy will. Bless our land with honorable ministry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion, from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people ... all of which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."15 Pray For: Our country, that the liberal forces that abound will not win the battle for men's hearts. America was founded by Christians, and now flounders for it has rejected the Lord Who established it. Pray that we will return to Him.

Pray For: That God will be glorified in our country. That rather than worry, I will "cast my cares upon Him, for He cares for me".

I believe the most important people on this earth are those who can intercede for their friends and loved ones. God desires that we pray one for another. And the Bible says we can pray with power and confidence. First John 5:14 states, "And this is the confidence that we have in Him, that, if we ask any thing according to His will, He heareth us." {The Apostle} Paul offered up a prayer for those he loved. He didn’t pray for financial wealth, but spiritual wealth.9
"If I woke up tomorrow morning and found that all that the Bible teaches concerning prayer and the Holy Spirit were removed (not as a liberal would remove it, by misinterpretation, but really removed) what difference would it make in practice from the way we are functioning today? The simple tragic fact is that in much of the church of the Lord Jesus Christ–the evangelical church–there would be no difference whatsoever. We function as though the supernatural were not there."2
Pray For: Your family, friends, and coworkers. Pray that the Lord will touch their hearts, and open doors by which you may share His Gospel with them.
Pray For: That I and our Church will be "the light of the world, a city on a hill that cannot be hid." Pray that I and every Christian has the courage to stand when rejected and despised of men, for Christ's sake.

Your compassion, Lord Jesus. “All that you are, Lord Christ, All your shining beauty, all of it, come in this moment and fill me now.”4 Pray For: Do not strive against sin, but pray against it. Ask your Heavenly Father for what you need. When tried, ask the Lord to take hold of your spirit and calm your soul. These “arrow prayers” go straight from to the heart of God. When we pray like this, God will give us what we need.
Day thirty four "Prayer makes a difference … we don’t know how … we just know it does. Prayer brings wisdom. Prayer provides strength for difficult times. Prayer convicts us of areas in our life that need changing. Prayer brings us assurance of our position in the Father. We know these things by heart. We know by experience that “prayer changes things.” We know that prayer changes us and it changes the world around us. We know that God gave prayer to us as a wonderful gift".17 Pray For: America, our soldiers and police, our community, our local Church, my sick friends and family, that my walk with Jesus will grow closer every day.

"I realize that whenever someone preaches on prayer, especially if you’ve gone to church for many years, it’s tempting to say, “Hey, I already know this. Tell me something I don’t know.” .... one of my jobs as a pastor is to tell you what you already know—and then to tell you over and over and over again. Some things are so important that we need to be constantly reminded of them. Nowhere is that more true than in the area of prayer. The question is not, “Do you already know this?” but rather “What are you doing about it?” Knowledge that is not put into action is worse than useless. "18
"To preserve our blessed land we must look to God... It is time to realize that we need God more than He needs us... We also have His promise that we could take to heart with regard to our country, that "If my people, which are called by my name shall humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." Let us, young and old, join together, as did the First Continental Congress, in the first step, in humble heartfelt prayer. ... The time has come to turn to God and reassert our trust in Him for the healing of America...19
Pray For: Prayer and study of God's Word is the most powerful resources I have as a Christian. Dear God, help me to commit to read and pray every day.

"... the number was so great that came out without solicitation that I did not need to return. I saw over a hundred inquirers last night, and there were from fifty to seventy that I had to close the door on, being unable to see them. A great many who have not been at the meetings at all, have been converted in their own homes. God is working, not we. Oh! that we would keep ourselves down in the dust, and every one of us get out of the way, and let God work. It would be so easy for Him to go into every dwelling ... and convict and convert ten thousand souls." 6
The stream of vital Christianity is running low and there are many today who, with the Prophet of old, are crying "Oh that Thou wouldst rend the heavens, that Thou wouldst come down, that the mountains might flow down at Thy presence." Yes, that prayer is on our lips, but I sometimes wonder if this truth is in our hearts: that self-renunciation must ever be the cardinal ethic of the Christian life. Where there is honesty and sincerity, where there is obedience and faith, this full life in God is gloriously possible. God in His wonderful mercy has made provision by which we can become the possessors of a life of purity, a life of power, a life through which there flows the blessing of revival, a life that has all its springs in God. 5 Pray For: My own sanctification, that God will purify my heart and draw me closer to Him, so that I may win others to Christ.
Pray For: The conversion of the lost. Invite and pray for your next door neighbor, your friends, your family. Pray that they surrender to Jesus before they meet death, for hell looms. Pray, for there is no repentance after this life!

Day forty
No man would come up with the idea that we as mere mortals can engage in communication with the God of the universe. It sounds absurd. That’s the vast and mysterious nature of prayer. And yet, time and time again, throughout the Scripture we see God’s delight in and command for us to pray. That’s the mathematical – or concrete – nature of prayer. Prayer is an open door to the very heart of God. Honest and heartfelt communication with the Father is something to which we are all called. Are you engaging in the mathematical mystery of prayer? 20
"My first act as President is a prayer. I ask you to bow your heads. Heavenly Father, we bow our heads and thank You for Your love. Accept our thanks for the peace that yields this day and the shared faith that makes its continuance likely. Make us strong to do Your work, willing to heed and hear Your will, and write on our hearts these words: "Use power to help people." For we are given power not to advance our own purposes, nor to make a great show in the world, nor a name. There is but one just use of power, and it is to serve people. Help us to remember it, Lord. The Lord our God be with us, as He was with our fathers; may He not leave us or forsake us; so that He may incline our hearts to Him, to walk in all His ways... that all peoples of the earth may know that the Lord is God; there is no other."21
