TAKING HISTORY TO THE HIGH STREET From early November, shoppers in Hythe and Saltwood will be able to read in shop and office windows the stories behind all those names they hear at the annual Remembrance Day services. Hythe Local History Group has researched the lives of 209 local men and women who died as a result of the Great War. Businesses are being invited to take part in honouring the dead by displaying a short biography - many of which have photos – together with a poppy made by a local schoolchild. Sometimes it has been possible to identify where an individual lived or worked, and it is planned to display their story in that place. ‘These soldiers, sailors, airmen and nurses lived mostly ordinary lives until they were called to do extraordinary things for their country. We wanted in some way to bring them back to the streets where they lived and to make their stories available to everyone, not just people who would usually go to exhibitions. The children’s beautiful poppies will make this a unique community event. For further information contact Anne Petrie at annepetrie6@yahoo.co.uk or 07795 523673
