SONGS – SKETCHES – MUSIC – LAUGHTER
WED 3RD - SAT 6TH APRIL 2019 www.thecheritonplayers.org.uk
From our Chair It doesn’t seem two years since the last Cheriton Variety Show – it’s been a busy couple of years for us and there seems to be no shortage of good material, talented performers and experienced crew to bring our productions to you, our loyal audience. I am delighted that Tracey and Claire have put themselves forward to direct this particular production because I know how enthusiastic they both are about theatre, performing and music; they have taken on an unenviable job in many ways: with a play, you have the finished script in front of you before you start casting. You know what the show is about, how long it will run, how many roles there are to fill and when the interval comes. With a variety show you start with a clean slate, a vague idea of the themes you want to explore (in this case an international one), the sort of ‘mix’ of different acts and then you go and find out what people want to do. It is fair to say that past directors of variety shows had so much material put forward that first draft schedules could have produced three- or four-hour-long shows. So sifting out the best without dampening the enthusiasm of many a would-be performer has always been a problem and I know that Tracey and Claire have found the same with this show. So when Tracey describes the process as ‘nailing jelly to the ceiling’ she is not far from the truth! Add to this the logistics of putting on a show with children (a welcome return to our stage!), 20-odd people in the cast, a bar, food for dozens of people, a tiny stage and a packed auditorium
and you start to understand why we only do this every other year! On a different note we are proud to be supporting Blue Apple Theatre once again this year; for those of you who are unfamiliar with this talented group founded in 2005 and based in Winchester, they produce high quality theatre, dance and film opportunities for those with learning difficulties. If you have not yet been to one of their productions, do take the opportunity to go and see what a positive impact this organisation has on their members by enhancing their social, personal and artistic skills. It is a joy to behold. You will notice a couple of Blue Apple ‘buckets’ on the way out. If you can help in any way to support this worthy cause, please do drop your loose change in them on the way home? Finally, a quick plug for our autumn production, which we are delighted to say will be directed by Helena Gomm, fresh from her recent success with The 39 Steps at West Meon Theatre. She has taken a quirky script and completely re-written it. The result is a hilarious Bond movie spoof entitled Diamonds are For Trevor that will include some film sequences by Jim Glaister. Dates for your diary are Wednesday 20th - Saturday 23rd November 2019. So, another busy year coming up! Thank you for your support and thanks too to our programme advertisers, friends, sponsors and other supporters who make our shows possible. Enjoy the show. David Cradduck

From the Co-Director Having been involved in the last two Cheriton Variety Shows and in many productions since I joined the Players in 2011, I keenly put myself forward to direct the 2019 show! Even though I have not lived in Cheriton now for six years, once you get involved with this group you never want to leave! A more friendly, welcoming and, frankly, extremely talented bunch would be hard to find. Cheriton Players always feels like home to me when it comes to performing. I have always loved performing, often putting on ‘shows’ for my family (and anyone who would watch) as a child and this love has grown over the years. I have been involved in many Cheriton productions including Alice, Clerical Errors, Murdered to Death and the last two variety shows. I have also performed with WMOS, ACTS and TOADS over the years. Although a keen actor, my real passion has always been for anything musical. Not being brave enough to direct this show alone I persuaded my extremely talented friend Claire Smith to take this on with me. She jumped at the chance and before we knew it our vision was coming to life! Directing a variety show is a bit like nailing jelly to the ceiling. So many
moving parts – but oh so wonderful when the show comes together. You never know who is going to show up at the beginning, and with what acts, and then rather wonderfully it all comes together. This year I am so pleased that, for the first time in many years, we welcome children to the stage. I could not be more delighted that we are able to showcase the talent of our young actors, singers and dancers. This brings a whole new element to the show and a very welcome one. We have decided through this process that I am in charge of worrying and Claire is in charge of reassurance – along with being in charge of many other things over the last few weeks! I would like to give special warm thanks to Claire for being brave (or perhaps mad) enough to direct this show with me. She is an absurdly talented woman who I am incredibly privileged to know and work with. I really hope you will enjoy our little jaunt around the world this evening and you will be laughing, crying and perhaps even dancing in the aisles! On with the show... Tracey Anderson, co-director
Claire Smith (Co-Director) Claire has been involved in theatre since the age of five when she learnt to dance and she soon started joining musical theatre groups. After university, Claire was busy with WMOS (Winchester Musicals and Opera Society), mainly in the chorus and as a dancer. She has taken roles like Hebe in HMS Pinafore and Lady Ella in Patience. Claire was involved in the Great Cheriton Variety Show, mostly singing in various roles. She appeared as Nellie in Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime, her first appearance in a non-musical production since
secondary school and she then took on the challenging role of Julia in A Month of Sundays. Claire was part of the hilarious line up for Cash on Delivery and as Aggie Wheeler in the thriller The Game’s Afoot. She also took part in our rehearsed reading of The Browning Version last summer. She will be remembered for her delightful singing as Mary Poppins in The Even Greater Cheriton Variety Show and she says she is delighted to be co-directing A Very International Variety Show.
Peter (Theo) Theobald (Music Director) Theo is a retired primary teacher who for forty-odd years has been involved in productions with school plays, choirs and concert bands. He has been the MD for West Meon Theatre since 2001 and has written original music for all Shakespeare plays since then, Cider with Rosie (2009), Calendar Girls (2013), The Cherry Orchard (2016) and has arranged music for pantomimes, one act plays, youth theatre and most recently Nell Gwynn (2018).
Theo has also been MD for Winchester Musicals and Opera Society in Oh What a Lovely War (2014), an originally written musical production of Midsummer Night’s Dream (2016) and an updated version of Utopia Limited by Gilbert and Sullivan (2018). He also plays the tuba in Thornden Community Wind Band and keyboards in a local barn dance band, The Bursledon Village Band.
