of a Washingtonian
he little four-seater Cessna soared above the evergreen
treetops. My mom held a map in her hands, ensuring the pilot, my dad, stayed course on ‘just another’ one of our weekend family adventures around Washington State. As we took in the bird’s eye view of beautiful scenery, a wall of gray sky appeared. Dad asked Mom for coordinates, hoping to skirt around the outer edge of the storm. We cut into the darkness, and were thrust into a racket of turbulence. Their voices remained calm, but urgent. My baby brother began to scream as he nearly bounced out of his 1970s plastic travel seat. Although I’m fairly certain I held my composure, my mother remembers it differently. She swiftly pulled off her headphones and clamored between the front seats toward the two of us, wrapping us up in her arms, map still clutched in one hand as she and Dad continued speaking in aviator’s language. Dad was a skilled pilot; Mom a skilled copilot, and together they managed to find their way out of the storm. I was a very young girl, shy and unsure of the world, and I remember gazing up at my adventurous parents with wonder. I felt safe and assured, without conscious reasons. My parents were full of warmth and confidence, and most of all, a sense of adventure and love for the Pacific Northwest. They took us hiking, camping, fishing, flying, boating, four wheeling, and trekking throughout the state. The adventures made me feel whole and unstoppable, which eventually gave me the confidence to spread my own wings, board a jet plane to the East Coast, and embrace the journey of adulthood while embarking on my own fearless adventures around the country. All the bits and pieces that make up who I am today have been inspired by the many people and places I’ve experienced along the way, but none of those people or places have felt like home the way Washington has. I was born in Mt. Vernon to Doug and Debbie Baker, owners of a popular downtown pub in the 70s. I have lived on both sides of the state and explored what feels like ‘every neck of the woods’. I returned ‘home’ to Washington to plant my own family tree and, with three kiddos of my own now, those roots grow deeper into the Washington soil. I currently live in Spokane, and have friends and family members in just about every county in the state.
Last September, as I took my youngest daughter on a seaplane birthday adventure over Puget Sound, the little plane hit a bumpy patch as we flew around the Space Needle. Her eyes, filled with a hint of fear, darted back toward mine. I smiled assuredly and said, “Wow, a little bumpy, but isn’t this amazing?!” She smiled back, relaxed into her seat and said, “Yes it is, mommy. Thank you!” Now onward and upward I go as I embark on the journey of creating a magazine that illuminates the wonders of Washington State and defines what it means to be a Washingtonian. Washington Travel and Life is for everyone who loves this corner of the world: its nature, its cities, its people, its wildlife, its wonders… I invite you to come along and discover it with me. I would love to hear your stories of adventure and life in Washington, so please write and share!

Going Viral By Peter Kelley
explores nature, impact of Internet virality
W
e live in a world where a tweet can be instantly retweeted and read by millions around the world in minutes, where a video forwarded to friends can destroy a political career in hours, and where an unknown man or woman can become an international celebrity overnight. Virality: individuals create it, governments fear it, companies would die for it. How will we of the early 21st century be remembered? By our technological innovations, social movements and many wars, to be sure. But also by pepper-spraying campus cops, epic fails and Gangnam-style. In the fullness of time, will history remember us for — Grumpy Cat? Going Viral, a new book by Karine Nahon and Jeff Hemsley of the University of Washington Information School, explores the nature of virality and suggests that the ubiquitous Internet memes of today, from silly to serious, may indeed make a fair history for tomorrow. “This is going to tell the story of our societies,” said Nahon, an associate professor. “Viral information will probably stick for longer than regular information.” She cautioned, however, that many things that go viral convey erroneous or biased information that can unfairly affect public opinion. Nahon and Hemsley, a doctoral student, combined qualitative and quantitative methods to study thousands of blogs, posts and the videos they link to, and more than a million tweets, blending theory from network science, social computation and communication to explore the origins and impact of virality. “We go beyond the marketing hype of ‘how to make something viral’ and talk about social aspects of it,” said Hemsley. “Why it is important as a cultural artifact and how the current landscape of social media constitutes a ‘social infrastructure’ that facilitates sharing — like virality — and social awareness like never before.” Virality, the authors stress, relies on social interactions and is not new, and not always global. They cite the 1955 arrest of Rosa Parks as an example of virality in how quickly the AfricanAmerican community of Montgomery, Ala., used phones, hand bills and word of mouth to recruit 40,000 to its boycott of the bus system, before press coverage of the story. “It’s not enough that a billion people watch CNN at night to see information — that’s not viral, it’s popular,” Nahon said. “‘Viral’ means that each of us has shared that information, and that’s the reason it’s important — it’s a social process. And when something really becomes viral, we’re talking about distribution to millions and sometimes hundreds of millions at the same time.” Is there any certain recipe for virality? Not really, said Nahon. “We looked at so many examples and found that you have to have certain ingredients. It’s unpredictable, but that’s the beautiful thing about the nature of human beings.” Nahon said the idea for the book came when colleagues at the Library of Congress sought her advice on how they might accurately depict our quickly changing digital culture. “I said they should start with the viral information, because that would portray society at a particular moment. But I also say let’s do it cautiously; we have to understand that some of those voices carry misinformation.” Going Viral was published in November by Polity. The research was funded by a Google research grant. You can find more information by visiting www.politybooks. com. Authors Jeff and Karine

Catching WA Washington’s Own Cami Bradley
Catching up with Cami Bradley
By Cheryl-Anne Millsap Photography By Sara Story Photography
Cami Bradley’s star turn on “America’s Got Talent” introduced the rest of the world to Spokane’s sweetheart and her life hasn’t been the same since. After leaving the show, Bradley toured with the “America’s Got Talent Live” and released a CD. Now, she’s back in her hometown but only to catch her breath before her next big adventure!
Q
WA: What led you to audition for America’s Got Talent? My whole life I balked at even the idea of these shows. I’ve never been a fame seeker and I’ve always been a bit of an introvert at heart. I love Spokane, my home and my family. I was comfortable, and although many people had encouraged me to pursue something, I didn’t see how a show would benefit me when I was already happy. When I got the call that a producer from the show had seen a video of mine and wanted to bring me to Chicago for an audition I was flattered but not really interested. But with some encouragement (and maybe a little force) from my family and husband, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and audition.
Q
WA: What stretched you the most during the AGT process? Everything stretched me. I was forced into the spotlight (something I’m not to fond of), thrown into interviews, the memorization of songs, the stress of being in front of millions of people and (then) being judged. The whole thing was outside of my comfort zone, but I quickly came to the realization that if I stayed comfortable my whole life, I wouldn’t get a lot out of it. And so the journey of growth began; stretching myself musically, with people, and (as) a performer.
Q
WA: How are you different now, after competing on AGT? I have a new-found confidence in what it looks like to be completely at peace in a situation I initially felt was beyond my talent and capability. Confident that I was supposed to be on this show and share something with the viewers, the judges and the contestants and not keep it to myself. I also gained a love of performing.
Q
WA: You’ve had a taste of the big time. How has that changed what you want for the future? I think it’s opened my eyes to the possibility of doing something bigger than I ever thought I was capable of or even wanted for myself. The ‘taste’ itself is not what attracts me, but the chance of beginning a new adventure and seeing where this could take me is intriguing. Luckily, I have an amazing husband who is not only on board for whatever is next, he is willing to do anything to help us navigate the journey together. He’s amazing and I couldn’t do it without him.
Q
WA: So the post-show tour is over and you’re back in Spokane. What’s next? Being a part of America’s Got Talent, and the “Live” tour after, was absolutely life-changing. I am still finding ways that it stretched me, grew me and taught me things about myself that I didn’t even know I needed to work on or change. The future is still a little up in the air, but I have some options I’m thinking about. I came home thinking life would be normal again and it’s not even close! Being recognized, receiving emails for amazing singing opportunities and all of this craziness is my new normal for awhile. I am still so thankful for the opportunity and can’t wait to see how this crazy adventure will affect the rest of my life.
Cami Bradley’s CD “SEAS’”is available on iTunes.

ine is more than a liquid libation. Most locapours (lovers of local wine) will claim Washington wine has meaning, depth and even truth in every glass. Wine is an experience, sometimes even a ritual that’s meant to be shared and from there the truth often flows. Vino Veritas is a Latin phrase that translates “in wine [there is the] truth.”

Wine, wine, and more wine.
Lucky for residents and visitors alike, Washington offers numerous opportunities to partake in the fermented juice. The local wine scene exploded in the mid-90s making Washington the second largest wine region in the United States. Compared to 1981, when there were only 19 official wineries, Washington is now drenched in wine, boasting more than 750 official wineries. To put this into perspective, there are currently 559 (24% less) Starbucks sprinkled throughout the state. Maryhill Winery

Wine has a story.
With the onslaught of wine production comes the stories behind the wine that are ultimately expressed in your glass. From the people who work the vineyards to the winemakers, even seemingly little decisions all have an impact on the direction, outcome, and personality that consumers taste. The range of possible combinations of these factors can result in vast differences among wines, and influence the fermentation, finishing, and aging processes. Though winemaking sounds très romantique, if you venture in you’d better be more than just passionate about it. Most winemakers will tell you that being in the wine business requires hard work and even more money. Not to burst the view from your rosé colored glasses, but we have it on good authority that winemaking involves a massive amount of cleaning. Arbor Crest

Wine can convey history.
Wine has a rich history dating back thousands of years and each vintage tells a tale about that specific year. You may have heard wine enthusiasts refer to terroir [ter-wahr], the French word for land. Terroir can be loosely translated as “a sense of place,” which is embodied in certain characteristic qualities. This combination of factors including soil, climate, and environment give wine its distinctive character. In a vertical tasting, different vintages of the same wine type from the same vineyard are tasted. This emphasizes differences between various vintages. Explore what makes a “good year,” and you can learn a lot about a particular wine. The specific conditions under which the grapes were grown and harvested also impact how the finished product tastes. Temperature fluctuations and the amount of rain or sunshine affect grape varieties differently. When it’s decided that harvest commences and extraordinary occurrences like extreme weather or insect swarms also leave their

mark. Craig Leuthold, owner of Maryhill Winery says weather isn’t as much of a factor, especially in Eastern Washington, but rather his concern is the composition of the soil and who is tending to the vineyard. Washington State has been recognized as having ideal geography and conditions for growing premium vinifera wine grapes. The state claims

on average 16 hours per day of sunshine and annual rainfall of eight inches (20.32 cm) in Eastern Washington (the major grape growing region) and 48 inches (121.92 cm) in Western Washington. The 350+ grape growers in Washington focus on Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, but the region officially produces over 30 varieties of white and red wines.
Tsillan Cellars Winery
Wine tasting includes ambience.
Where you are and whom you’re with can enhance the experience and bring greater enjoyment from the wine. Let’s be honest, wine tastes better at picturesque places, with people you adore or while listening to great music or indulging in delicious food. These wine moments often happen at the wineries. Taking in an outdoor amphitheater-style concert at Maryhill Winery in Goldendale or at Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery in Woodinville creates a memorable evening that pairs well with the host’s wine. But putting down a picnic blanket on the grass at Arbor Crest Cliff House perched above the Spokane Valley while listening to the best local musicians or participating in open-mic night at Sapolil Cellars in Walla Walla is just as special. Even hearing Classic Rock vinyl spun at Sleight of Hand’s tasting room in Walla Walla while you taste through the line up can enhance wine’s flavor. Washington wineries are plentiful but as unique and diverse as the wine itself. Lavish and over the top to intimate and even quirky, there’s a favorite Washington winery for everyone. Food, of course is the natural pairing for wine. Cave B Estate Winery in Quincy invites you to their on-winery restaurant, Tendrils, which has seasonal fare perfectly paired with the estate’s wines and complimented by a commanding view of the Columbia River Gorge. Sorrento’s Ristorante at Tsillian Winery in Lake Chelan offers authentic Italian cuisine precisely paired with the estate’s wine in a Tuscan-style setting with arguably the grandest view of Lake Chelan. At Tsillian Cellars you can dine al fresco with sound
Tsillan Cellars Winery
of a piano player tickling the ivories at a backdrop. Diverse, yes, but despite the rapid growth, Washington wineries are still very intimate and often provide the opportunity to taste with the winemaker. If they’re not pouring, they are usually close by and eager to answer any questions about their liquid art. Washington State has truly become a destination for wine. Visit a winery and taste why.
Wine is the answer.
What was the question? According once again to locapours, its always the right time for wine. Wine is the perfect gift; one size fits all and duplicates welcome. With the wine being, well, everywhere, Washingtonians have adapted a casual approach to wine. It’s become for many, a daily indulgence. The benefit of so much quality wine being produced is that one
doesn’t need to break the bank to enjoy a great glass of wine. Wine attempts to reclaim the lost ritual of gathering, conversing and lingering. Whether it’s a significant celebration and time to break out the 1995 Leonetti Merlot or a daily indulgence of 2011 Maryhill Winemaker’s Red blend, wine is designed to be pleasurable and easily incorporated into one’s life. It’s true; the bottled magic can even turn around a less than stellar day. Vino Veritas. Laurie L Ross is a consistently published freelance writer who usually writes about the important things in life; fine wine, creative cuisine, spectacular spas, regional art, and unique boutiques. Ms. Ross has a popular wine blog www.sipofspokane. com. Weekdays she can be found as the Director of Marketing at an advertising agency in the Spokane Valley.

ith so many great outdoor activities in Washington State, who wants to stay inside? That is unless you have a cool space at home like a movie theatre, sports lounge, hobby room or bowling alley. Yes, we said, bowling alley. Where once there was a bare bones basement or spare bedroom, homeowners are creating an atmosphere of excitement and sophistication that showcases their passions in new and creative ways. Once you get inspired, be prepared to never want to leave home again.

Bowling Alley Basement
L
ots of homes have backyard swimming pools and driveway hoops are almost a suburban necessity for basketball fans. But what if your passion is bowling? A bowling alley isn’t something you just install in your spare bedroom or basement, so Concept Builders put the “Wow Factor” into a Seattle waterfront home project by designing a house around a 100-foot bowling alley. “In our initial meetings with people, we have them make a dream list, no matter how far out. We try to work without limits,” says Dan Schaafsma, president of Concept Builders, a 50-year-old custom design+build company with offices in Issaquah and Enumclaw. If you’re going to build a bowling alley, you may as well do it right, so ball returns and automatic pin setters came directly from AMF, the biggest name in the sport, which outfits bowling centers around the country. By the time the space was created and equipment purchased, the cost was over the $200,000 mark. “We were very excited to do it, and it was a challenge at the same time . . . we’d never done a bowling alley before. We worked intensely with AMF to get the plans and engineering done just right,” Schaafsma says, adding that the floor had to be recessed to accommodate the underground ball return. “The AMF crew came in to install the equipment and it fit just like a glove.” Adjacent to the alley on the lower level of the home, is a wet bar with a semi-circular two-level granite countertop. Guests can also sit at a bar that runs the length of the lanes and watch the action while enjoying a refreshing beverage. Northwest Cabinet Designs, of Auburn, created special storage units for balls and shoes. The plan was to create a spa/lodge feel to the home, and detailed alder woodwork throughout helped to unify that theme. “There are two different types of wow factors. One is the initial presentation of the home when you drive up to it or go inside. The other is the features that are incorporated into the home . . . like a bowling alley,” Schaafsma says. “The key is that everything is in its right place and isn’t put into a space where it doesn’t fit well. Of course, then there’s budget, and that will tell the kind of a wow factor that can be created.” Concept Builders • www.conceptbuildersonline.com WASHINGTON Travel + Life • Winter 2013 • washingtontravelandlife.com

Garaj Mahal
F
or most guys, the garage is the place to park the car and store lawn tools, bicycles, fishing gear and other “stuff,” as your wife may call it, that doesn’t belong in the house. When a client with a car collection that rivals the LeMay automobile museum approached Gelotte Hommas Architecture, they knew just any old garage would do. “The owner loves cars and to restore and customize them. They’re just beautiful and he wanted to put them on display,” says Scott Hommas, principal with the Bellevue architectural firm. “The whole main floor is garage space – saying it’s a ‘garage’ is almost underestimating it. It’s really a display area for his cars, motorcycles and racing memorabilia. . . things that don’t belong in a dusty storage room.” Dubbed the ‘Garaj Mahal’, the fully custom designed structure houses a 3,000 square-foot garage capable of holding more than 20 vehicles, some stacked two high on custom fabricated car lifts. From the street, the gated Mercer Island abode resembles just another custom home in the community. The big difference being that when you enter the extra wide front door, the custom finishes that draw your eye are polished chrome and shiny paint jobs. “It’s a modified steel building, but it couldn’t be just a steel building in a residential neighborhood,” Hommas explains. “The outside is clad with insulation and appropriate windows.” Garaj Mahal is the proof that passion can shape the spaces we live in – or at least visit on a regular basis. The owner actually lives nearby. But the versatile space has a second story living area, including exercise room, kitchen and living room, connected by a catwalk suspended over the cars providing an up close look at a helicopter hanging from the ceiling. For those dreaming about transforming their garage into the ultimate man cave, Hommas points out that an eclectic collection can come out looking interesting and beautiful, or just be a miscellaneous mess. The difference is in the planning process. “It might look simple on the surface, but there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye,” he says. “As part of the process, you pick a theme – is it cars that are on display on velvet carpets under neon lights or is it a garage made to look like a 1950s soda fountain? If you are consistent with the theme it all comes together.”

Home Movie Theatre
W
ho doesn’t enjoy going to the movies? But who likes long ticket lines, sticky floors, and crying babies? Exactly why people are opting to stay home. That and also the fact that they can watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters, sporting events and concerts in the comfort and convenience of their very own private home theatre. “For those who are real movie aficionados, a custom built home movie theatre can truly rival the sound and picture that you would get at a commercial theatre,” states Roland Munroe, owner of Seattle Home Theatre and Cutting Edge Design. “Really, with the cost of taking your family out to a movie, you do that twenty times a year for five years and you’ve paid for your own theatre.” Home theatres can be built into spare bedrooms and unfinished basements, but one of the most common places is the unused bonus room above the garage. It might be odd-shaped, but usually it’s large enough to accommodate a custom built room just for the theatre. A lot of attention is placed on the basic sound and projection equipment, but one add-on that is many times overlooked is comfortable seating. If you are fully committed to creating the best home theatre experience possible you should really kick back in something plush and leather-covered. Perhaps from luxury brands like Fortress or Elite. They offer not just a “chair,” but a range of styles from rows of fold-up seats to motorized recliners with storage arms, drink holders and even heated massagers. “The unfortunate part is that some seats are so comfortable, you might fall asleep,” Munroe says. Details make the difference between a TV room and an honest to goodness home theatre. Home Theater Seattle offers décor elements
from vintage movie posters and popcorn machines to illuminated starfield ceiling panels. Search the web and you’ll find theatres themed after Star Wars, Wild West saloons, and Egyptian palaces. Art deco – think Miami in the 1930s – is one of the boldest and most striking designs, Munroe says. Theatres can be ultra integrated so walking into the room you would think you’re in a normal living room, but with the push of a button, curtains close, the screen lowers, lights dim and it’s movie time! “The real fun,” Munroe says, “is when you get your interior designer, contractor and home theatre specialist and build exactly what you want.”

LEGO Lounge
I
knew I was going to be an architect when I was two years old, and a big part of that was LEGO,” says Jeff Pelletier, Principal and Founder of Board & Vellum, a Seattle architecture firm focusing on custom residential, retail, commercial, and multi-family projects. “I would spend hours at a time building cities, skyscrapers, homes, offices, pretty much anything really. I learned to spend my time looking at the real built environment around me and think of ways I could build that in LEGO.” Pelletier never lost his passion for the colorful little blocks. If anything, you might say that fondness grew into an adult obsession as he amassed a quarter of a million pieces. The LEGO collection had been confined to a spare bedroom in Pelletier’s 1902 craftsman style home, but what he really desired was a space where he could not only let his imagination and building skills run wild, but where friends could hang out and have fun. A 600 square feet basement became the LEGO Lounge, complete with a stowaway worktable and floor-to-ceiling storage. “The adult LEGO community has all these ideas about the best storage options, but I came
down to two systems – basic clear Sterilite plastic drawers and Ikea tubs,” Pelletier says. “A custom shelving system handles the drawers down low, and has grooves for the tubs above. The room was sized so that everything would fit perfectly.” Casework was finely crafted by Evan Scott Cabinet and Furniture. “Every square inch is carefully detailed,” Pelletier says. “There’s more custom casework in this one room than there is in three entire homes.” “I wanted the LEGO room to be the center of the action,” he adds. “In urban homes, you don’t have the space to make each room it’s own to serve just one purpose, so this really had to be multi-purpose.” A projector screen pulls down in front of the LEGOs, and a comfy sofa can be rolled in for watchers to relax on while they enjoy a movie or sporting event in high definition with realistic surround sound. A dark stained cherry wood bar, complimented with Ann Sacks luxury glass tile backsplash, flows seamlessly into the stairs to the main level of the home. The bar is amply outfitted with an eight-level wine rack, built-in

fridge, icemaker and glass shelved lighted liquor cabinet. “When a client says they want a ‘custom’ space, what they typically want is something that’s designed just for them,” Pelletier says. “Not everyone wants a LEGO room, but this is MY space.”

Home Sports Bar
W
ashington is home to some of the most devoted sports fans in the country. While there’s no substitute for actually watching a game in person, many Husky, Mariner, and Seahawks fans have found that a finished basement makes an excellent sports bar where friends can gather to catch all the action with a literal home field advantage. Even though the feeling is Go Team!, a home sports bar should be comfortable and tastefully decorated, rather than a place with team pennants tacked to the walls and hot wing stains on the chairs. “My clients were huge University of Washington fans, and while they wanted the space to be Husky driven, they also wanted it to be sophisticated like they were going out to a really nice lounge. They didn’t want it to go to the cheesy factor that you see so many times in sports rooms,” says Kassi Clark, owner/chief designer at Kasabella, a boutique interior design firm in Sammamish. To strike a balance between fandom and sophistication, Clark focused on details and finishes. Light sconces were created with the University of Washington logo etched into the glass, and walls were painted a pleasing
shade of purple. Custom chalkboards display schedules for Seahawk football, Husky sports and NASCAR racing events. A rock-faced bar with granite counters, built-in icemaker, double-refrigerator and custom crafted cabinets allow visitors to belly-up for a cool refreshment. Décor, check. Bar, check. You can’t really have a sports bar without a TV (or two or three or four of them) to watch all the games on, now can you? Though it may not be considered a “decoration,” you’ll have to put some thought into what kind of TV you want, the size, and where it will be placed amongst everything else in your den. Modern frameless flatpanel televisions provide a sleek space-saving profile while offering the largest viewing size possible. At halftime or between innings, guests here can play a game of pool or stretch their legs on the outdoor patio. There’s even a small fitness room connected to the space. “It comes down to being able to create something with ‘awe factor,’” says Clark, who was recognized at the 2013 Northwest Design Awards for her exceptional work. “When people walk down stairs into the ‘basement’ they are just amazed because rarely do you find something like this in someone’s home.” Kassi Clark / Kassabella • www.kasabella.com WASHINGTON Travel + Life • Winter 2013 • washingtontravelandlife.com

Photographing
Washington Photography by Greg Vaughn
F
or over twenty years, Greg Vaughn has wandered back roads, mountains, valleys, beaches, deserts and trails of the Pacific Northwest, capturing images to share the beauty of nature with others. Greg’s photos regularly appear in travel-oriented websites and publications such as Backpacker, VIA, National Geographic Traveler and Travel Oregon. Greg’s book, Photographing Oregon, published by PhotoTripUSA, was named Best Travel Book of the Year by the Independent Book Publishers Association in 2010. He is releasing his latest book to the delight of Washington residents, Photographing Washington – A guide to the natural landmarks of The Evergreen State. Photographing Washington covers the most photogenic natural locations (and a few man-made ones) in the state of Washington. The book covers the entire state, from the rugged coastline to Puget Sound and islands in the Salish Sea, through the Columbia River Gorge and Cascade Mountains, across the Columbia Plateau to the mountains and valleys of the eastern border. Whether a beginner or pro photographer, visitor or resident, this book saves

you endless hours of research and exploration to find these beautiful locations. With the book’s help, you can safely visit the best coastal cliffs and beaches, lighthouses, wildlife refuges, gardens, waterfalls, verdant valleys, volcanic peaks, a sagebrushsteppe desert, the rugged terrain of the Channeled Scablands and the gently rolling hills of the Palouse. Photographing Washington includes 320 pages of useful information and over 230 full color, inspiring photographs, most of them by Vaughn. Hundreds of the best places in the state for landscape and nature photography are covered, along with detailed instructions on how to get there and the best time to go. All the major national parks, national monuments, national forests and most state parks are covered. Beyond that, clear and precise directions are provided for seldom seen and hard to find sites. A chart even provides comprehensive ratings for each location including scenic value, photographic appeal, and road and trail difficulty. We sat down with Vaughn to ask him a few questions about his work on the book and thoughts about the beauty and adventure unique to our beautiful state. (Continued on page 37)

WA: What sticks out to you about Washington and the photography options available? Vaughn: What makes Washington so special, for residents and visitors, and especially photographers, is the incredible diversity of the landscape in the state. The Evergreen State boasts many miles of ocean and lake coastline, both long sandy beaches and rugged headlands and cliffs. Temperate rain forests rise to snow capped peaks in the west, contrasting greatly with the sagebrush steppe desert and channeled scablands of the east. The Cascade Mountains include a still-active volcano and more glaciers than anywhere in the United States except Alaska. WA: What was your favorite adventure while compiling this book? Vaughn: While working on this book, I logged many miles on Washington’s highways, backroads, and trails. I visited many remarkably beautiful places, but the experience that is most memorable is my five-day backpacking trip in The Enchantments. Hikers have long considered the Alpine Lakes Wilderness to be one of the country’s

premier backcountry trips, and I was there at the peak of fall color when the larch trees light up an already spectacular landscape. WA: What does ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ mean in the work that you do? Vaughn : In the case of Photographing Washington and the other books in this series of guides, the reason these books are so heavily illustrated is to give photographers, who are very visually oriented people, an idea of what they will see when they visit a location. An image can almost always do that much more succinctly than the proverbial thousand words. Aside from the utilitarian usefulness of the photos in the book, one of the things that I love about photography is that a single photograph can have a different meaning, or be interpreted in a different way, to the people that view it, and each viewer might have their own thousand words.
