orlds of Homelessness, a project of the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles, is a week long program in Los Angeles proposing an interdisciplinary and global engagement with homelessness, and its connections to inequality, gentrification, racism and migration. The project creates a platform for local and international artists, architects, and scholars to come together to share ideas. Discussions, music performances, and film screenings will take place from October 22 – 27, 2019 in Los Angeles at the Skid Row History Museum and Archive, NAVEL, and SCI-Arc, and culminate with the Festival for All Skid Row Artists on October 26 and 27, 2019 in Gladys Park in Skid Row. “Homelessness and housing precarity are worldwide issues,” says Lien Heidenreich- Seleme, Director of the Goethe-Institut in Los Angeles. “While we realize that homelessness in Los Angeles is a local discussion that needs local solutions, we also believe that housing is a global phenomenon that could benefit from international discourse.” The project is developed in cooperation with the Los Angeles Poverty Department, which has created art with and promoted the activism of Skid Row artists for decades; the Thomas Mann House, the renowned independent architecture school SCI-Arc, the Institute on In-

The LA Playmakers will open
Worlds of Homelessness and close the Festival for All Skid Row Artists. The band was founded 5 years ago by Joseph Warren and Stan Watson. They all were members of the Praise and Worship Team at Skid Row’s Central City Church of the Nazarene. “These accomplished professional musicians have played with a number of well-known jazz and pop music figures. They embody the creative spirit that persists in this community,” explains John Malpede, Artistic Director of the LA Poverty Department.■

a Canada Flintridge Orthopaedic Guild (LCFOG) will hold its annual Book and Author Luncheon October 22, 2019 at the La Canada Flintridge Country Club 5500 Godbey Drive, La Canada. Presiding over the event will be Marianne Jennings, President of the Guild. Members of the Guild began preparations for this event in January, under the guidance of co-chairs Caryl Pettit and Arlene Massimino. Committee members are now putting on the finishing touches. Almost 200 women attend this annual event and look forward to the Silent Auction, for which Marie Baker and her committee have been successful in obtaining some wonderful gifts. Marilyn Center assures the Bonus Board will have plenty of envelopes full of fun items. More than anything, former guests have said they enjoy hearing the authors present their recent novels and how they came to write them. Naomi Hirahara, a Pasadena resident, will be a familiar name to many guests. Hirahara is the Edgar winning author of the Mas Arai mystery series, including Summer of the Big Bachi, Strawberry Yellow, Sayonara Slam and Hiroshima Boy. She is also the author of the Ellie Rush mysteries (Penguin) and the co-author of Life After Manzanar (Heyday). Her Mas Arai books have earned such honors as Publishers Weekly’s Best Book of the Year and one of the Chicago Tribune’s Ten Best Mysteries and Thrillers. She will be presenting her most recent book “Iced in Paradise” released in September 2019. Naomi has also written books about gardening and Japanese-American history and culture. She has contributed to several

Three members of LCFOG will be available and ready to package the books when chosen by guests. Helping with book sales will be Ginney Pruitt, Maria Gero and Marie Gilhooly. All proceeds from the sale of books, the silent auction and other activities will benefit Orthopaedic Institute for Children (OIC), one of the largest pediatric orthopaedic facilities in the Western United States. Martina Reese Martina Reese, 73, of Lake View Terrace, CA passed away, August 24, 2019 with her family taking care of her. She is survived by a husband, three children, and three grandchildren.
Verdugo Hills Liquor Store 7119 Foothill Boulevard
She was born to the late Ceferino Cases and Carolina Ocampo, July 31, 1946, in Bario Estanza Lingayen, Pangasinan in the Philippines. Martina (Mely) graduated from The National Teachers College in Manila, Philippines, and became a teacher. Mely was the most giving mother, wife, and friend. Her whole life, she always thought of others and put them and their needs ahead of hers. Mely was a passionate cook who can whip up an abundant meal made for a large party of people, even if it was only meant as a small casual gathering. Mely was a hardworking and loyal employee for the US Postal Service at Sunland Post Office for over 35 years until retirement in 2014. She passed her strong work ethics to her children. She was immensely proud of her family, and leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories. In observance of the Catholic tradition of the 40-day post-death period, funeral arrangements are set to take place in a family residence in Las Vegas, NV on October 5, 2019.

Our business was founded in 1987 and we both grew up in the industry,” said Daniel Panduro, who owns the CARSTAR location along with his ownership team, Sandy Panduro and Brian Frame, also own two other locations in the Southern California region, CARSTAR North Glendale, 3455 N. Verdugo Rd., Glendale, CA, and CARSTAR Sun Valley, located at 11027 Sherman Way, Sun Valley, CA. “We believe the insurance and OEM relationships that CARSTAR fosters are a game changer for any independent collision repair operator that’s looking to succeed in today’s competitive and complex environment,” notes Panduro. “This is one of the many reasons why we decided to join CARSTAR and we are excited to have all of our locations a part of this network, in addition to being the 700th facility for the CARSTAR family.” These three new facilities bring the total store count in California to 50, with almost 25 in Southern California alone. “My grandfather, Milius, bought Gene’s Paint and Auto Body in the 50’s,” said Brian Frame. “He passed on the business to my dad and then I took it from my dad in 2011. Everyone knows us in the community because we have been here for so long and it’s a long time family run business. So our ownership group came together in a fun way. I actually sat next to Danny at a Dodgers game and we just started talking shop. So that was about 8 or 9 years ago and we just always stayed in touch and worked together on processes and shop events. We decided to join forces with our three facilities a couple years ago and then joined CARSTAR because we recognized the way the industry was going with rapid consolidation and we wanted to continue our business with a trusted recognized national partner.”
NITY NEWS Daniel Panduro, along with his ownership team, Sandy Panduro and Brian Frame show their excitement for their newest shop opening! “We support JDRF as well as local high schools and their athletic programs,” notes Daniel Panduro. “We also have a scholarship in honor of our brother who passed away back in 1990.” His partner Frame adds, “We also support my daughters softball team, that I proudly coach and we’re excited to learn more about the cystic fibrosis charitable partnership CARSTAR has and how we can help.” They also plan to continue investing in the community. “We have three locations in the area, CARSTAR Sun Valley, CARSTAR North Glendale and CARSTAR Montrose,” said Sandy Panduro. “CARSTAR North Glendale is our facility for small dents and dings, our CARSTAR Sun Valley location has several manufacturer and industry certifications so it specializes in complex repairs and CARSTAR Montrose is our “head office” so we have our leadership team here. However no matter where you take your vehicle, we’ll be able to help you because we share our resources across the board to make it more convenient for our customers. We all grew up here, went to the local schools and still are active in the community. We just want to help people because we know cars are so complex and people want to make sure their repairs are done right.”

La Tuna Canyon Emergency Evacuation Drill
Dam, a very high fire hazard severity zone. Outreach teams have been deployed to help individuals living in these areas get connected to homeless services and interim housing. Given the scale and diverse topography of Hansen Dam, this coordinated interagency effort will occur in phases through the rest of September and October.■

ast Saturday during a drizzle and low cloud cover, an emergency evacuation drill for La Tuna Canyon residents was held for the community and the rescue teams that would be participating in a real emergency. Coordinated by CERT leader Janet Gibson and with participation of the local La Tuna Canyon Fire & Rescue team, the American Red Cross, SHPOA and animal rescue groups, the simulated evacuation went off
without a hitch. LAPD Capt. David Grimes came to observe how the community could get together and act as first responders in event of a disaster such as the floods and fires La Tuna Canyon residents have gone through in the past few years. Of particular interest was the operation of surveillance drones that operated in the rain and gloom doing a simulated search for a victim in the La Tuna Canyon Valley. Using Forward Looking InfraRed cam-
eras on one drone and live streaming video cameras on two others, the “victim” was located and members of the Altadena Search & Rescue were deployed to the location and members climbed down the steep embankment to use a “Bates” litter to carry the victim back up to the roadway to safety. More than 50 people participated in the drill and celebrated its success with hot coffee and doughnuts provided by the American Red Cross.■

Celebrating Latino Heritage Month
E
very year, from September 15th to October 15th we celebrate Latino Heritage Month in the City of Los Angeles. During this time, communities across the nation pay tribute to the millions of Latinos who have enriched America’s culture, economy, and history. This year marked the 80th anni-
versary of El Grito, an event that welcomes thousands of Angelenos to City Hall to celebrate Mexican Independence Day with arts, music, and culture. I am proud to take part in the City’s celebration of Latino Heritage Month and its recognition of the strength and beauty of our diverse, multi-ethnic City.■
