CD-7 Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez Dedicates Fitness Equipment At Sunland Park The La Tuna Canyon Spillway BEFORE!

The new spillway under La Tuna Canyon Rd. AFTER! The completed play area ready for kids to enjoy! By David DeMulle’

T

his week, the final phase of the new playground installation at Sunland Park was completed. This new play area includes an upgraded swing set, a new shade structure, a resilient playground surface, and a new hydration station. These improvements are a part of a series of investments I have prioritized at Sunland Park and the surrounding areas in Sunland-Tujunga. I am committed to creating safe spaces for children to play and community members to enjoy. Last year.. “I joined the Department of Recreation and Parks, the LA Parks Founda-

tion, and the Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation to unveil the new exercise space and equipment at Sunland Park. That new addition replaces a dormant part of the park that housed an old shuffleboard court. And provided places for the homeless to hang out and disrupt our park patrons. I am committed to making sure that all members of our community can come together to enjoy our local park spaces.” It was a quiet ceremony with not one member of the Sunland-Tujunga Chamber of Commerce executive board or even Honorary Mayor John Clausen or anyone from the Sunland Tunjunga Neighbor-

hood Council or it’s Land Use Committee in attendance. Just another subtle way that our CD-7 representative was able to snub them without anyone knowing. All in all, the transformation of the unused shuffleboard court that has now been transformed into a fitness center for seniors and others that want a healthy place to exercise, is a real asset to our community.. Coffee and pastries weren’t provided by Arnie Abramyan this yearl. Of note is that for once, CD-7 Senior Volunteer Representative Roger Swart was not in attendance and did not call anyone a “Putz.”■

CD-7 Councilwoman Comes Through With La Tuna Canyon Repairs

A

s a result of the La Tuna Fire in September 2017, and the subsequent debris flow that following winter, a sinkhole emerged alongside La Tuna Canyon Road. To repair the collapsed hillside, my office worked with the Bureau of Engineering to secure funding and begin repairs on this crucial thoroughfare. The work of this project is delivered in phases and we have recently reached a

major milestone. New inlet and outlet structures have been completed, along with a riprap armor constructed from local stone (shown above). The final phase of this road repair project will consist of reconstructing the embankment and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. These improvements will increase the safety of constituents and ensure the stability of La Tuna Canyon Road.■

How can aging in place impact your family?

I

ndependent living is often cited as being good for one’s well-being, so it’s no surprise that aging in place has become so popular. Thankfully, many options in today’s housing market make it possible. Preparing for physical safety and financial security are the most immediate con- cerns that come to mind as we plan for aging in place. However, convenience and overall well-being should also be considered before deciding where to settle in. Here are three housing options to weigh as you or your loved ones plan for continued independence.

1. Renovate Your Current Home

Adding front entry ramps, bath bars, sit-in tubs and other safety features may make it physically possible to stay where you are. However, renovation costs can add up quickly, especially if they’re needed all at once. Home maintenance should also be factored in. Who will manage the

upkeep if the property has multiple floors or a large yard?

2. Right-Size to a Manageable Floor Plan

Some may find it easier to purchase a home with bar- rier-free, universal design rather than deal with the stress of home renovations. Moving closer to family and friends can also help to prevent social isolation or depression.

3. Buy a New Home With Family Members

Floor plans for multigenerational homes are often designed with individual privacy in mind while allowing family to be nearby. Sharing home maintenance costs also minimizes living expenses. And this is an ex- cellent way to help family members enter into home- ownership. Aging in place requires thoughtful preparation. Get in touch today for a referral to a trusted financial adviser to begin this journey. You can also reach out if you’re interested in learning about your home’s value or find- ing a new property.■

gt. Jeremy Lachenmyer, K-9 Officer Kota and Officer Travis Sargent will be the guest presenters at the Arcadia Community Coordinating Council November meeting. They will talk about the K-9 program, show a brief video and will execute a demonstration of Officer Kota’s skills as an explosives detection dog. The Arcadia Police Department K - 9 program is supported by the Arcadia Police Foundation (APF), which is funded solely through donations from the community. Since its inception in 2015, the APF has successfully raised funds to bring the K - 9 Police Program back to Arcadia with two K - 9 officers and handlers – K -9 Officer Zoli, whose specialty is drug detection and apprehension and K - 9 Officer Kota, trained in explosive detection and apprehension. Over the last four years these K9 units have successfully: • Conducted over 50 searches resulting in 22 surrenders and 4 apprehensions. • Recovered almost $500,000 in contraband, money and evidence including 150 pounds of marijuana, 46 pounds of cocaine, 46 pounds of methamphetamine, and 30 pounds of

fentanyl. • Conducted bomb scent searches on approximately 700 vehicles, 44 parade floats, and approximately 20 buildings. K-9 Officer Zoli was recently retired and the APF is funding the purchase of a new K-9 officer and handler in the coming months. About the ARCADIA COMMUNITY COORDINATING COUNCIL (ACCC): The ACCC provides the opportunity for community groups to share information about their upcoming projects and events and post their events on the ACCC Community Calendar of events on which all events in Arcadia are promoted. In addition, the ACCC sponsors the Arcadia

Campership Program enabling low-income Arcadia children to attend summer camp. The public is encouraged to attend the monthly meetings and new members are cordially invited. Nina Royal 28 mins • Nina Royal Jennifer Mohamed In MPO...You are right! It’s about justice and about MR intentionally bypassing our community by not allowing us to participate in the decision making process,” in a timely manner” as a good responsible leader should do.. And. Monica Rodriguez (MR) is allowing this nonsense about race to go on because it conveniently covers up for her bad judgement, which is the cause of dividing our community!! Our very diverse community worked well together for many, many, years until MR came on the scene and created her “Team MRod” who are the only people who have her ear in our community. How come this has happened! It didn’t happen because we are racist!. This community campaign and elected Paul Krekorian as our Councilmember and we fought to keep him when they split District 2 and we still became CD 7. Many of us worked to elect Karo Torossian Obviously, they are both Armenians!! Is this payback time by MR? Where do they get off calling us racist! This is plain and simply wrong and the bullying by MR’s supporters needs to stop! We all need to treat each other with respect and work hard to get along for the good of our community!

Narek Abdalian 35 mins • Narek Abdalian Allen Yeg If you look into why Bolton Hall is named as so, you will realize it has a connection with the people and community during the time of its construction. It all coincides with the backto-the-land movement which encourages the development of self-sufficient communities who rely on pure natural materials to get by. This movement was practiced by the early Utopian community that had settled here in the early 20th century. Now your argument will be that William Saroyan serves as a symbol to the growing Armenian population in the community. No problem with honoring him for the sake of the influx of Armenians into the community but pick a better location. Like I said before the choice.

MaryLouise Burdi 39 mins • MaryLouise Burdi “Renaming this square serves as a symbol of one group encroaching on the way of life of another.” Exactly right. The idea is to move to an area you love and blend in and become part of the community, not destroy what is there and replace. Can’t do that and not expect kick back.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2019 • THE FOOTHILLS PAPER

I

love it when people are having fun. This town is overloaded with political intrigue and people yelling at each other. (Don’t even bother reading Facebook) Our councilmember has done everything possible to court the Armenian vote, even to the extent of dissing the “Good Ol’ Boys & Girls” that have lived here forever. But it doesn’t matter, it all goes away like trash blowing in the wind. What is most important is that for the most part, we all get along together, our kids go to school together, we eat at the same places and most important, we work together. These are just a few pictures of the hundreds of people having FUN at the 4th Armenian Cultural Festival. And my old friend Sonia Tatulian looked just radiant. Enjoy!
