Visions of Autumn “An autumn garden has a sadness when the sun is not shining...” ― Francis Brett Young Autumn 2017 was incredibly frustrating – the seasonal colours were as good as any recent year but the weather just would not cooperate! One dull day succeeded another. You were lucky to catch an hour or two – or even a few minutes – of brightness. A woodland on a grey October day has its own special beauty but one cannot help but feel that every autumn day without sunshine is a massive missed opportunity. It adds to the melancholy of life – as the chance to enjoy this wonderful time of year slips inexorably away. Some of the pictures in this collection reflect the dreariness of the skies but there was enough sun to go out and capture a fair few decent images of autumn. I hope you enjoy this latest collection of photos, photo art, poems and literary quotations all selected to capture visions of autumn at its very best.

Is not this a true autumn day? Just the still melancholy that I love - that makes life and nature harmonise. The birds are consulting about their migrations, the trees are putting on the hectic or the pallid hues of decay, and begin to strew the ground, that one's very footsteps may not disturb the repose of earth and air, while they give us a scent that is a perfect anodyne to the restless spirit. Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.
“A moral character is attached to autumnal scenes; the leaves falling like our years, the flowers fading like our hours, the clouds fleeting like our illusions, the light diminishing like our intelligence, the sun growing colder like our affections, the rivers becoming frozen like our lives--all bear secret relations to our destinies.”
― George Eliot
“Two sounds of autumn are unmistakable...the hurrying rustle of crisp leaves blown along the street...by a gusty wind, and the gabble of a flock of migrating geese.”
― François-René de Chateaubriand
You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintery light. But you knew there would always be the spring, as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person died for no reason.
― Hal Borland
― Ernest Hemingway
Such days of autumnal decline hold a strange mystery which adds to the gravity of all our moods. Monument in Whitworth Park

AUTUMNAL Pale amber sunlight falls across The reddening October trees, That hardly sway before a breeze As soft as summer: summer's loss Seems little, dear! on days like these. Let misty autumn be our part! The twilight of the year is sweet: Where shadow and the darkness meet Our love, a twilight of the heart Eludes a little time's deceit. Are we not better and at home In dreamful Autumn, we who deem No harvest joy is worth a dream? A little while and night shall come, A little while, then, let us dream. Beyond the pearled horizons lie Winter and night: awaiting these We garner this poor hour of ease, Until love turn from us and die Beneath the drear November trees.
