Visions of Autumn “What is autumn? Here is a very simple definition: Autumn is a Queen, Queen of Beauty!” ― Mehmet Murat ildan Nathaniel Hawthorne had it spot on. It seems criminal to be inside on a fine autumn day. To be stuck in the office is bad enough but you have no choice; to stay at home is unforgiveable. This was particularly the4 case in the autumn of 2017 when fine days were rare and sunshine at a premium. On one particularly glorious afternoon I took a walk across the fields to get some photos. I didn’t think the results were particularly good but one of the photos I took that day ended up in the local paper. Things turn out like that sometimes! A couple of weeks later I visited Rivacre country park (see volume 3); it began to rain and I decided to return to the station. Then the skies brightened and the sun returned. I turned back to get a few more pictures. One of those ended up in the paper too!

“Samhain is the threshold to the Season of Death. The fertile fields of summer give way to the bare forests of autumn. As crops slowly die and winter takes over, the cycle of life is once again approaching a renewal.” ― Dacha Avelin

I hope you enjoy this second volume in my latest collection of photos, photo art, poems and literary quotations all selected to capture visions of autumn at its very best.

David

“Autumn is autumn.” ― Lailah Gifty Akita 7

“Yorkshire's autumn was as great a gift as Yorkshire's summer. I loved watching the rusting of the leaves while the dales mellowed to shades of ochre, and rose hips and blackberries grew deliciously fat on their branches. The morning mists were mystical and magical to me, and the rose-glow of the evening sun lent the sky a hypnotic light that matched any Cape Town sunset.” ― Hazel Gaynor

“An autumn forest is such a place that once entered you never look for the exit!” ― Mehmet Murat ildan “Colourful autumn is a tristful travel to the pale Planet of Melancholy!” ― Mehmet Murat ildan “There is only one autumn in a year, but in people’s life, there are many autumns in one year!” ― Mehmet Murat ildan

“Sometimes I ask myself how autumn smells? My answer: it's the smell of the autumn leaves, fireworks and red wine.” ― Bryanna Reid “Life is like an Autumn; short but colourful.” ― Zain Baloch “The might of life honors the waning sun of Autumn be-decking the landscape in a fancy blaze of tangerine.” ― Tara Estacaan “If only humans could die like the autumn leaves, with a splash of beauty and the promise of another season.” ― Shana Chartier

“His beard was all colors, a grove of trees in autumn, deep brown and fire-orange and wine-red, an untrimmed tangle across the lower half of his face. His cheeks were apple-red. He looked like a friend; like someone you had known all your life.” ― Neil Gaiman, 46
