ashes of loved ones are placed into urns , which are then placed into a storage system , reading as volumes on a shelf .

In

contrast , our

approach was to integrate the remains with the structure .

T he

process is such : a visitor arrives on site with the ashes of the

descend the stairs , leaving the city behind , and enter the

submerged volume to the right .

there , the ashes are mixed with concrete ,

which is then poured and cast into a form around reinforcing bar . with the help of drones , this module is then lifted and fastened into its place as a component of a skeletal volume .

the structural system

continues to grow vertically based on the needs of the public . the result is a skeletal volume that continues to grow towards the sky .

it consists of repeated voids that provide a lens from which one ' s

view of the city is framed by spirits of the past and the reminder of death .

E ventually

the tower will reach its capacity , at which point the

columbarium becomes a sculpture , a symbol of the many lives that are equally important components that embody the collective structure of humanity .

the plan is

to take advantage of the roof truss necessary to span the length of the underground arena by fitting in the required commercial centre within the truss .

to multiple penetrations and welcomes a real urban realm to the site .

T he

internal axis of the grid acts as the common meeting

place for events , shops , recreational sports facilities and restaurants .

P ortions

of the floor are glazed to allow

the casual visitor to experience the ongoings of the arena .

are also multiple openings in the ceiling to allow

light in and access to the rooftop .

the roof is a

continuation of public sporting activity , the garden of the

project harkens mvrdv ' s market hall , where the apartments

shape the container of the market . while here , the sporting arena ' s truss makes the character of the market .

By

releasing the site from bearing the functions of the

commercial centre , the residential program is able to be separated as stand alone towers so that regulations and access can be more optimized to specific necessities . the arena , whilst a large building , is largely underground .

T he

enclosed in floor to ceiling glass panes .

the existing context .

location in front of the old ice rink as a gentle sculptural landmark that forms a pivot point between the olympic park and the
