The Swedish band WINTERGATAN is about music. And musical instruments. And sounds and melodies. With pounding beats in the bottom end, autoharp and accordion in the middle and Vibraphone, Glockenspiel and Music box towards the high end the sound of Wintergatan is both beauty and beast. Grand and minimalistic. Occasionally the Modulin, a monophonic analogue homebuilt theremin/violin-esque syntheseizer dives in singing in the sci-fi key. Being instrumental Wintergatan´s music is direct, driven by catchy melodies, telling tales without using words. The band´s name derives from the recording session where Wintergatan created their debut album in a vast forest in Sweden. Wintergatan is Swedish for “The Milky Way” and on cloudfree nights in the forest, distant from citylights blocking your eyesight you can see how our galaxy lies tilted, as a line crossing the starry sky. This sensation of actually being a part of, and in, the galaxy gave name to the band. The first thing ever to come out from Wintergatan was the song and video of “Sommarfågel”. “Sommarfågel” immediately got wings of its own and an extensive live tour was booked without anything else released. A second song and video, “Starmachine 2000”, was released shortly after that. Wintergatan then released their selftitled debut
album on May 1, 2013, on their own record label. In October 2013 Wintergatan released a single named after Gothenburg´s fastest bike - Tornado. With “Tornado” and another bike related track “Biking is Better”, taken from the album, Wintergatan salutes the superiority of bikes as the best inner city transport vehicle. Quicker, cheaper, healthier and more environmentally friendly. Wintergatan´s four members all plays several instruments and if there is a need for a new instrument someone figures out how to use it. It was this approach that first brought Martin, David, Marcus and Evelina together. They all grew up in four different small towns in Sweden - the kind of small towns where you have to come up with something yourself to have anything to do. Unknowingly of each other they spent their time in similar ways making and playing music. Ten years later Wintergatan was born. The instruments used on all Wintergatan releases so far include: Music Box, Glockenspiel, Drums, Handclaps, Accordion, Bass, Analogue Synth, Modulin, Vibraphone, Harp, Drawing Pin Piano, Typewriter, Digital Synth, Hackbrett, Toy Piano, Whistle, Drums, Mandolin, Piano, Projector, Melodica, Toy Synth, Autoharp, Tambourine, Electric Guitar, Theremin, and a very lovely Hammond Organ.
While Chick created the concept of RETURN TO FOREVER and wrote the initial songs (the music was actually first played when Chick was touring with his group Circle prior to RTF), Chick and Stanley are the founding members of this legendary band. So it’s more than appropriate that the originators of this classic songbook take it back where it all began and feature this material in its essence. Chick & Stanley plan to feature many of the songs from the first two RTF albums. Most of that material was not played on the 2008 or 2011 tours. It’s a surprise to many that the very first Return to Forever album is Chick’s highest selling to date, reaching a platinum status internationally.

“...seductively hip.” BBC
“I’ve always believed that in life, what you keep in your mind is what you draw to yourself.” That’s how trumpeter/composer TERENCE BLANCHARD explains the title of his 20th album, MAGNETIC, which finds a stunning variety of sounds and styles pulled together by the irresistible force of Blanchard’s vision. The idea of a spiritual magnetism “is a basic concept in any type of religion,” he says. “it’s all about drawing on those things to help you attain enlightenment in your life at the same time that you’re trying to give back to the community.” MAGNETIC gives expression to that belief through the combined voices of Blanchard’s always-scintillating quintet. Its latest incarnation brings together longtime members BRICE WINSTON (SAXOPHONE) and KENDRICK SCOTT (DRUMS) with FABIAN ALMAZAN (PIANO), who made his debut with the group on its 2009 album CHOICES, and its newest member, 21-year-old prodigy JOSHUA CRUMBLY (BASS). In addition, they’re joined by a trio of remarkable special guests: master bassist Ron Carter, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, and guitarist/vocalist Lionel Loueke. It was Blanchard’s core group, working together over the past two intense years, that reached a deeply attuned point, the one at which MAGNETIC was formed. As Blanchard says, “the project holds a wide range of musical ideas that come together only through the efforts of the guys in the band.” The vast array of approaches undertaken by that ensemble is striking, from the blistering bop of “Don’t Run” to the fragile ballad “Jacob’s Ladder;” the psychedelic electronic haze of “Hallucinations” to the urgent edginess of “Another Step.” And Blanchard expands his palette on this project through the use of electronics, creating an overdriven, electric guitar-like sound for his horn during “Pet Step Sitter’s Theme Song” or brewing the mind-altering atmospherics of “Hallucinations.” MAGNETIC marks Blanchard’s return to Blue Note Records, which last released A TALE OF GOD’S WILL, his triumphant 2007 requiem for his home city, New Orleans, in the wake of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina. That harrowingly emotional song cycle is just one of many large-scale projects Blanchard has undertaken in recent years. Since first writing music for Spike Lee’s 1990 jazz-set movie Mo’ Better Blues, Blanchard has become a renowned film composer, most recently scoring the WWII drama Red Tails for producer George Lucas.

He is a pianist with a brilliant technique and a composer who flavors his tunes with the spice of Caribbean rhythms and jazz harmonies. Academy Award-winning filmmaker Fernando Trueba, who featured Camilo in his documentary film Calle 54, says: “Michel Camilo is one of the top all-around musicians. Listening to BOBBY McFERRIN sing may be hazardous to your preconceptions. Side effects may include unparalleled joy, a new perspective on creativity, rejection of the predictable, and a sudden, irreversible urge to lead a more spontaneous existence.

For decades BOBBY MCFERRIN has broken all the rules. The 10-time Grammy winner has blurred the distinction between pop music and fine art, goofing around barefoot in the world’s finest concert halls, exploring uncharted vocal territory, inspiring a whole new generation of a cappella singers and the beatbox movement. His latest album, spirityouall, is a bluesy, feel-good recording, an unexpected move from the music-industry rebel who singlehandedly redefined the role of the humanvoice with his a cappella hit “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” his collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Chick Corea and the Vienna Philharmonic, his improvising choir Voicestra, and his legendary solo vocal performances. It’s been the quietest and most polite of revolutions. Bobby McFerrin was always an unlikely pop star. He created a lasting earworm of a #1 hit early in his career. Then he calmly went back to pursuing his own iconoclastic musical journey, improvising on national television, singing melodies without words, spontaneously inventing parts for 60,000 choral singers in a stadium in Germany, ignoring boundaries of genre, defying all expectations. Bobby’s history as an instrumentalist and bandleader is key to understanding his innovative approach to mapping harmony and rhythm (as well as melody) with his voice. “I can’t sing everything at once,” he says, “but I can hint at it so the audience hears even what I don’t sing.” All that pioneer spirit and virtuosity has opened up a great big sky full of new options for singers. But virtuosity isn’t the point. “I try not to “perform” onstage,” says Bobby. “I try to sing the way I sing in my kitchen, because I just can’t help myself. I want audiences to leave the theatre and sing in their own kitchens the nextmorning. I want to bring audiences into the incredible feeling of joy and freedom I get when I sing. “ PROJECTS

The changing lights
Stacey Kent
Since discovering Getz / Gilberto, that historic encounter of jazz and bossa nova, STACEY KENT’s own musical journey has wandered freely in the open spaces of jazz and song, with Brazil becoming, in her eyes, more than a country: a kind of internalized poetic horizon, a chosen land on an intimate scale, adjusted to the proportions of her soul, her singing and her inspiration. Whether she literally celebrates them through covers of Tom Jobim, Sergio Mendes or Luiz Bonfá, or whether she summons the spirit through the finesse of her performances, Stacey Kent has never loosened the emotional ties that bind her to Brazilian music. Her passion with Brazil, made both of depth and lightness, pervades her tenth album. The Changing Lights is not “Stacey Kent’s Brazilian record”. In collaboration with her partner and husband, the English saxophonist, composer and arranger, Jim Tomlinson, Stacey Kent simply displays all the sensitive qualities of a musician for whom Brazil represents, precisely and foremost, “a region of the heart”.

With the release of her first album, CLOSE YOUR EYES, Stacey Kent has defined herself as one of the finest interpreters of the Great American Songbook of her generation. As she has expanded her musical horizons, her subtly persuasive style has become increasingly honed. Stacey’s move to the legendary Blue Note label in 2007, with the launch of BREAKFAST ON THE MORNING TRAM, marked a more confidently individual style and this album of Bossa Nova, French chansons, American standards and originals became a worldwide hit. In fact, All three of Stacey’s EMI recordings become bestselling albums, with over a half a million sales to date: BREAKFAST ON THE MORNING TRAM reached Platinum status in France, and Double Gold in Germany, as did RACONTE-MOI, and her current album, DREAMER IN CONCERT, her first ever live album, released in 2011, continues this run. As Stacey is able to transcend genre and national boundaries with an ease and in a way that few other artists can, she has found new audiences outside Europe. The most recent country to embrace Stacey and her music is Brazil. She is now a regular visitor to the country where most recently, she toured with Marcos Valle, whose song “So Nice (Summer Samba)” she recorded in 2002. Her recording of “Les Eaux De Mars (the Waters Of March)” was featured in the recent film documentary, A Música Segundo Tôm Jobim. At the 80th Anniversary of the iconic statue of Cristo Redentor in Rio De Janeiro, last year, Stacey and her husband, the saxophonist and composer, Jim Tomlinson, were the only non-Brazilians to perform.De Mars (the Waters Of March)” was featured in the recent film documentary, A Música Segundo Tôm Jobim. MARCOS VALLE & STACEY KENT LIVE IN CONCERT, featuring JIM TOMLINSON 2011 marked the 80th anniversary of the statue of Christ the Redeemer, (O Cristo Redentor), that most famous of Rio de Janeiro’s landmarks, on top of Corcovado. The highlight of those celebrations was a spectacular concert featuring many of Brazil’s stars. The only non-Brazilians to perform at this concert were Stacey Kent and Jim Tomlinson, invited by the legendary Marcos Valle, to perform his best known and best loved song, SAMBA DE VERÃO (or SO NICE). This meeting sparked a friendship that has continued both on and off stage, culminating in a concert tour of Brazil in spring 2012, with Stacey and Jim, once again, joining Marcos and his band, to perform a program made up entirely of Marcos’ compositions, both his classic songs as well as songs written especially for Stacey. Marcos says of this project: O segredo desse projeto , é que foi feito com muito amor , desde o inicio , até agora. Esse CD será a comemoração dos 50 anos de minha carreira , e nada poderia ser melhor do que ele. Stacey e Jim , adoro voces . - Marcos Valle The secret of this project is that from the beginning, it was made with much love. UTE LEMPER is an exemplar of a singing style with a long European pedigree. Every song demands an artifice of total vocal, physical and emotional involvement in the tradition of masters like Lotte Lenya, Martha Schlamme and even to an extent, Edith Piaf. Lemper is not afraid to turn herself inside out in the service of her music, in this case, music she has composed—with contributions by Marcelo Nisinman—to the words of Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda.
The love poems of Pablo Neruda. This very delicate and beautiful songbook is presented mainly in Spanish, but also has adaptations in French and English. It is a fantastic celebration of these especially sensual poems by Neruda who had written them on the Chilean Isla Negra after years in exile. Neruda became known as a poet in his teens, and wrote in a variety of styles from surrealist to overtly political tones, as well as the erotically-charged love poems which form the basis of Ute’s Neruda Song Cycle. When President González Videla outlawed communism in Chile in 1948, Neruda was forced into exile, because of his politically charged activities and writings.. In 1971 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez once called him “the greatest poet of the 20th century in any language.” In 1973, around the time of the Augusto Pinochet coup d’état, Neruda was diagnosed with cancer and died the same year. Pinochet had denied permission to transform Neruda’s funeral into a public event, however, his legendary status prompted thousands of grieving Chileans to disobey the curfew and crowd the streets.
She chose eleven love poems that range from sexual worship (“Tus manos”), to despair (“The Saddest Poem/No. 20”). In “Allianza” (“Sonata”) she used quick-changing tempos to express the poem’s images smashing into each other. “El Sueño” found the flamenco within her allowing her to unfurl long moaning phrases. “Oda con un lamento,” a shout of despair, was accompanied by counter-intuitively quirky rhythms.
“I’ve never heard a singer of her generation who has such a command of styles ranging from Bessie Smith to Betty Carter. Cécile McLorin Salvant An award-winning, young jazz songstress, CÉCILE MCLORIN SALVANT has dazzled audiences around the world with her expressive style and masterful vocal technique. Winner of the 2010 Thelonious Monk Competition in Washington D.C., Cécile has been called a “true and remarkable jazz singer…a young jazz prodigy,” by Paris Hot Club Magazine. Cécile rediscovers lost gems with a soulful expression that inhabits the songs the way an actress embodies a character. She has performed with renowned musicians such as Jean-Francois Bonnel, Rodney Whitaker, Dan Nimmer, Jacky Terrasson, Aaron Diehl, and Wynton Marsalis. Cécile has performed at numerous festivals including Jazz à Vienne, Ascona, Spoleto Festival, and the Detroit Jazz Festival as well as prestigious venues including the Kennedy Center, Chicago Symphony Hall and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Red Baraat
“It’s fun as hell.” THE CHICAGO READER “A Big Band for the World.” WALL STREET JOURNAL
There’s a reason NPR called RED BARAAT ‘The Best Party Band in Years.’ The pioneering eight-piece band from Brooklyn fuse North Indian bhangra rhythms with New Orleans’ brass, jazz virtuosity, and soul. This utterly unique sound is matched by the band’s infectious and abounding energy – turning staid theaters and seated rooms into dance parties from the opening number. Red Baraat’s last album debuted at #1 on the Billboard World Music Charts and the group was a subject of features in the Wall St. Journal, Rolling Stone, and in nearly every major daily newspaper of their tour markets. One of the most exceptional and vital groups playing today, their tour history includes some of the most prestigious theatres and PACs in the world, (Lincoln Center, ???) biggest festivals, (Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, Bestival UK) and best clubs, (Bowery Ballroom, 9:30 Club, Tipitinas). And at each stop, the band draws an audience as diverse as the group itself – pulled together to celebrate and dance in Red Baraat’s spirit of joy, inclusion, and plurality. Baraat is the best party band I’ve seen in years. After the group’s joyously noisy set at the Tiny Desk, a wide array of people — from our youngest interns to some of our oldest journalists — told me how much they loved Red Baraat. Of all the concerts that have come to my desk, this seemed to be the little-known band that won over the most hearts. I get the feeling that, for Red Baraat, 2012 is going to be a big, big year.” :: “There was a raucous finale. The last set belonged to Red Baraat, a Brooklyn brass band that looks to South Asia, pumping out Bollywood tunes and Sufi songs with a crackling beat (from the two headed dhol drum) and the muscle of horns blasting in unison, putting some New York bluster atop faraway roots.” THE NEW YORK TIMES
NPR ALL SONGS CONSIDERED :: “Imagine
a New Orleans street band playing Indian Bollywood tunes with a go-go beat — you can’t? Then just listen, because your day is about to get better. It’s a crazy blast of fun.... One of the best concerts of 2011.”
RED BARAAT Press
THE CHICAGO READER
:: “It’s fun as hell”.
SONGLINES :: “Red
Baraat have a studied multi-ethnic cool reminiscent of other New York world fusion acts like Gogol Bordello and Yerba Buena.” WALL STREET JOURNAL
:: “A Big Band for the World.”
:: “A new-breed marching-band music that’s part Punjabi wedding, part New Orleans second line, and all New York.” BOSTON GLOBE
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC :: “Red
Baraat has been one of the New York
music scene’s best-kept secrets.” :: “On the Verge: 5 Artists You Should Know About. “Calling it a party doesn’t quite cut it. But when there’s no room to dance-or march, even that’s probably the best word.” RELIX
THE VILLAGE VOICE :: “Red
Baraat have the locomotion of an army… they’re nonstop revelry for any light soul who can match their boundless energy.” INDIA CURRENTS :: “The
open-air rendition of “Tunak Tun” at the Lincoln Center is not just infectious, it’s visual heroin – just watching them make music is a shot of pure adrenalin.”
Since playing his first notes while still in his pre-teenage years, Martino has been recognized as one of the most exciting and virtuosic guitarists in jazz. With a distinctive, fat sound and gut wrenching performances, Martino represents not only the best in jazz, but in music. As Nic Jones wrote in an appreciation on All About Jazz, “Jazz guitarists at this moment in time are nowhere thick on the ground as jazz singers...More pertinently, there’s only one Pat Martino. No one who professes an interest in improvised music should overlook this master at work.”

“Martino has always had an uncanny ability to build tension through repetition... until the tension was so intense that when it finally released, the audience’s enthusiastic response was equal parts incredulity and relief.” ALL ABOUT JAZZ “His sense of melody is such that even his most burning solos never go too far out... a model of virtuosity held in check by good taste.” HIGH BIAS “Martino’s cool tone spins off vicious lines of headspinning dexterity...one of the sharpest guitar slingers on the planet.” JAZZIZ
