THE LORD WILL ANSWER YOU!

THE LORD WIL ANSWER David Hathaway

There are times when it seems we have to go even through despair, as individuals and as nations. This was the experience of the prophet Habakkuk, and of Sometimes it appears God is not answering us. When I was in the prison, 1972-3, I prayed and I prayed: for food, for deliverance and for my wife to be allowed to visit. It seemed God didn’t answer. I remember the morning, alone in my cell when I said, “O Lord, I can’t pray anymore. The Heavens are like brass, shut up against me. You don’t answer me!” But in my desperation that day, God DID suddenly answer! With such Power, that it seemed that the whole of Heaven was opened, and all the Glory of God came down into that cell! But it came because, like Habakkuk, I was saying, how long must I pray, and how long will You not listen or hear me? There are periods in all our lives when it seems God is not answering. But that does not mean God is not there, that He’s not listening. My father always used to say that in the laws of physics, every action has a reaction. Every wave is followed by a trough. And every trough is followed by a wave. He taught me, our emotions and experiences vary. But under pressure, we mustn’t think God is not listening to us. The communist prison was the worst time in my life – yet God used it to work one of the biggest miracles in my life! When I look back, I thank God for that time! Like Habakkuk, there are times when we have to go through the despair, “How long will I cry, and You will not hear?!” But now in Habakkuk 2:1 the prophet says, “I will stand upon my watch, and set me on my tower, and I will watch what God will say to me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved.” In the midst of his depression and anxiety, Habakkuk resolves, “I will watch and wait to see what the answer is, and what shall I say to Him if I’m reproved…” You know, there are times, spiritually, when God HAS to reprove us. There have been times in my life when I have had to face reproof. And there have been many times when I have been over-concerned and over-anxious. Now in v2 the prophet writes, “The Lord answered me! He said, ‘Write the Vision, make it plain, that he who reads it may run with it! For the Vision is yet for an appointed time. But at the end it shall speak

2

Israel. Habakkuk begins in Chapter 1:2 saying, “O Lord, how long shall I cry, and You will not hear?!”

and not lie. Though it tarry, wait for it, because it shall surely come and will not delay.’” God is saying, “I’m going to show you the Vision (of what will come to pass) – write it down, speak it clearly. And then run with the Vision, because it is for a specific time, it WILL come, at the appointed time. And although it seems to you to delay, it will not fail!” There are often times in our lives when we need the patience to wait for the fulfilment of God’s Promises… Looking back over more than 70 years of ministry, seeing the many difficult times I’ve been through – God has never failed me once! There have been ups and there have been downs in my life, believe me! I’ve been in poverty. There was a time when I was newly married with twin girls, I was evanglising, living in a caravan and had no money – we lived for a week on mushrooms which someone gave us! But God never fails! I believe the Church must now enter a period of self-examination, as well as being active. And I think the Church would face reproof, because if God were to speak the truth into the Church today, it would not just be, “Oh, how well you have done, what a fantastic job…” Yes, there are times when God says that. But there ARE times of rebuke. Habakkuk says, “What shall I answer when I am reproved? In wrath, remember mercy…” So sometimes what God is saying to us, brings an element of fear. And yet the prophet says, “Revive Your Work in the midst of the years! Make Yourself known!” This should be our cry, whatever we’re going through – persecution, distress, or the godlessness of the nations we live in… Godlessness is increasing by the day, our governments are passing laws approving things which should not be done – I’m shocked and discouraged by what I see… I’m crying out to the Lord, “In the midst of these years, REVIVE YOUR WORK!” It’s not just ‘revive me’ or ‘revive the Church’, but ‘O Lord, REVIVE YOUR WORK!’ Get a Vision of what God can do. because it’s HIS work, not ours! Proverbs 29:18 in the KJV says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish” – they die! This is why God says to

Habakkuk, “Write the Vision!” Where there is a lack of vision in the Church, in our lives – we are in danger of getting cold, falling away and needing reproof. I NEED a vision of what God WILL do. My vision at my age is not just of the past. Yes, I testify of what God has done in my life, because it’s the past which gives me strength and confidence for the future, and makes my vision for the future is even stronger. Because, if God could do that in the past, if we cry out, “O Lord, revive Your Work in the midst of the years” – God will do far GREATER things now than anything He has done before! But this has to be a Vision of God, of what HE wants to achieve, of what HE wants to do. Today the Church is so often more governed by its own counsels and ideas, with a vision of itself, rather than simply being led and guided by the Holy Spirit and by prayer. I try not to depend too much on what other people are saying and advising. So many people prophesy over me, but not many of those ‘prophecies’ have ever come to pass! They’ve not been in line with what God is telling me to do! From my earliest days I’ve had a clear vision. My ministry is called Eurovision, because, back in the 1980s – at the height of the Cold War in Europe – He gave me a clear vision that He would break the Iron Curtain that separated East and West, and that the Power of God would sweep from East to West. That’s why I held the first of four East/West Eurovision Conferences in 1988, and within 12 months – in 1989, only one year later, the Berlin Wall fell, and from there the whole of communism began to collapse, though Russia itself did not come free until 1991. I ACTED on that Vision, I ‘ran with it’! Even before the freedom came, I was in the East, preaching and ministering in faith that, even if the vision was delayed, God would not fail, God would not lie, He would do what He said. How powerful it was! Look at the revival that swept through godless Russia, Ukraine and the satellite communist states of Eastern Europe – Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria. God never fails! He did it! But only because I had to run with the vision. That was 40 years ago, a whole genera-

LL YOU!

tion ago! We need a fresh Vision, a fresh revelation – this is what I am asking God for, and this is what He is giving me, a vision of what He is going to be doing in the future. But not just the future – we need to run with that vision NOW – and not despair! Look at Joel 2:18ff, ‘Then the Lord will be jealous for His Land and pity His People. Yes, the Lord WILL answer His People, “Fear not, be glad and rejoice, for the Lord will do GREAT THINGS!” This is the vision God is giving me. How strong can I be on this point? And how strong can the Lord be? Because He says to you, “FEAR NOT, I WILL DO GREAT THINGS!” I believe that what we are about to see is an even GREATER revelation of His Power on earth than anything in the past. God’s Power doesn’t diminish just because there’s sin and wickedness in the world. God doesn’t change! God still loves the sinner. He still wants to redeem the earth. That’s why, in the near future, Jesus Christ is coming back – to fulfil every Promise, every Vision! But I’m not waiting till He comes back! I have a clear job to do – to reveal the Power and the Glory of God on the earth. That’s why I remain so strong, physically, mentally, spiritually. Like Moses, my powers are not diminished. Because I am about to see in the coming days, months and years, the Glory of God revealed on earth! The vision that I have is what God CAN and actually WILL do!

Oh yes, there are times when, like Habakkuk, I’m saying, “O Lord, how long shall and I cry, and how long will You not hear?” That happened to me in a communist prison, 50 years ago in 1972, crying in such desperation that I couldn’t pray anymore… But suddenly it seemed as if the whole roof of the prison was blown off. I could feel the angels coming down, I could see the Glory and the Fire and the Power. I jumped up, singing at the top of my voice that famous song, ‘Then sings my soul, my Saviour God to Thee, how great Thou art!’ But where did I see this breakthrough? In the distress and discomfort of a prison cell. I haven’t had an experience like that anywhere else! But this is God! And like Habakkuk, we’ve got to seek for a fresh Vision, we’ve got to seek that God would revive us, awaken us. Joel is full of this, 2:21ff, “Fear not O land, the Lord WILL do GREAT THINGS! Don’t be afraid… Be glad, rejoice in the Lord your God, for He has given you the former rain moderately – and He will cause to come down for you the former and the latter rain… I will restore to you the years the locusts have eaten… And you shall know that I am the Lord your God and none else, and My people shall never be ashamed!” In my darkest hours in the prison, that’s what the Lord brought to me: ‘Those who trust in God will never be ashamed!’ I want to remind you. Whatever the circumstances, whatever the difficulties in

our lives and in our nations, we shall never be ashamed of our faith and our trust in God, and in His Power and in what He is going to do… …Because the prophecies of Habakkuk and of Joel lead on to the return of Jesus Christ! Yes, they also speak of a terrible suffering. Joel 3:9ff says, “Gentiles, prepare for war… beat your ploughshares in to swords, let the weak say ‘I am strong’. Assemble yourselves together… Let the heathen be awakened and come to the Valley of Jehoshaphat, for there I will sit to judge the heathen. Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe and their wickedness is great… Multitudes in the Valley of Decision, for the Day of the Lord is near in the Valley of Decision.” THIS is when the Glory of God will be revealed! Vv15ff, “The sun and the light shall withdraw their shining. The Lord shall roar out of Zion and utter His Voice from Jerusalem, and the Heavens and the earth shall shake. But the Lord will be the Hope of His people and the strength of the children of Israel!” What a wonderful prophecy! Don’t be discouraged. I want you to get that Vision of what God can do! Get into your ‘watchtower’ and pray until God answers you and shows you His Power and His Glory! O Father, open our eyes, let us get into that place in the ‘watchtower’ where You answer when we cry to You. O God, be not silent, but show Your Power and Your Glory! In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

TESTING TIMES

In our worship, in our living, in our preaching – and me in my evangelism – we have to be fulfilling the prophecy of Joel! Peter, speaking on the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2, quotes Joel, “This is that which was spoken by the prophet: God said, in the last days He would pour out His Spirit on all flesh!” We need to see that today! Literally. We are living in those ‘last days’! We need to see the outpouring of God on all flesh! And it must come with the same signs – “your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.” At my great age I’m not an old man, I’m still seeing the visions, I’m not ‘dreaming’… Joel also said, God will “show wonders in heaven and signs on the earth, blood and fire and vapour of smoke…” Prophetically, the Church was to be born into an age of the miraculous, and I believe it is God’s intention that we should live in the miraculous, and that it is only the miraculous that will really convict the ungodly! Look at Acts 2:22, how does Peter describe Jesus? He says, “Jesus of Nazareth,” but different from any other, because this man is “approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs which God did by Him in the midst of you!” Even though we see Jesus working the miracles – He healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, raised the dead – yes – but which GOD did BY Him! Note that. Jesus had given up His Heavenly Authority by nature of His birth, to live as a man – until He received the Holy Spirit, who enabled God to confirm who Jesus is, by the miracles He did.

And God will do the same miracles through US! I’ve seen more miracles than most people, I’ve seen some incredible ones. Because, in order to convict the people, we NEED to see miracles. In 2016 in Caesarea, we saw the most incredible miracle. The Roman Amphitheatre where we were to hold our meeting is right on the seashore. On the day of our evangelism, there was the strongest storm they had ever seen on the Mediterranean coast, the gantry holding the speakers was swaying one meter in both directions, and the police would not allow the people in because it was too dangerous. My staff called me out to see. It was as if

a holy anger seized me and I jumped up on the platform, the devil will NOT stop this meeting! I commanded, “Jesus, You who calmed the storm on Galilee, calm this storm on the Mediterranean!” INSTANTLY it stopped! That happened in front of 4000 unbelieving Jews! It was easy to preach the Gospel after that!

If God can do miracles like that, then nothing is impossible by the Power of Jesus’ Name. “Jesus of Nazareth” – Jesus, in the Hebrew Joshua, was a common name, but this Jesus, from that troublesome town Nazareth, Peter says was “a man approved of God by miracles and wonders and signs which GOD DID.” Whoever we are, pastor, preacher, ordinary people, or evangelist like me – we don’t work the miracle – GOD DOES IT! Only God can calm the storm, only God can raise the dead, only God can open blind eyes – but it’s God IN US! Through the Holy Spirit in us! I’m talking like this because in v23 Peter goes on, this same Jesus, you took Him and by wicked hands, crucified Him – but GOD RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD! I believe that the time we are moving into is going to be one of the most difficult testing periods of the Church. And what we desperately need is revival! This word ‘revival’ occurs in the King James Version about seven times. In Psalm 13:3 David says in effect, “O Lord my God, revive ME or I DIE!” I echo those words sometimes, “Unless YOU revive me, and quicken me with Your Power – I DIE!” And in Psalm 138:7, and in Habakkuk 3:2, the cry is “Revive Your Work O Lord!” We NEED God to move today – in a miraculous way – to revive His Work! The Church NEEDS to be revived! To be ‘revived’ means something had life, has lost it and is brought back to life… Whatever you think about ‘revival’ – we desperately NEED the Church, which has lost its Power, to come ALIVE! There have been significant ‘revivals’ in the past, we NEED an even greater one now! Under Covid we’ve seen a period of repression. Most of my staff are Russian and Ukrainian and lived through the communist years. What is happening today worldwide is a replica of how the communists controlled the people – with fear! I know. I

David Hathaway

lived through those years under communism, I was working there, I saw what happened. The communists literally controlled the people by fear. We see it today: in the Japan Olympics, one of the competitors from Belarussia was threatened because she criticised her coaches – the head of the Belarussian Olympic Committee is the son of that foul president there. She was so afraid of what would happen to her when they came to take her out of her hotel room and force her on a flight back to Belarus, she cried for help and has been granted asylum in another country. Her husband fled to Ukraine. This is how they control by fear. In Britain under Covid, night after night we saw, not good news of people who had recovered, but death, death, death – and critically ill people in the hospital – so that now, although freedom has returned, still there are people who are afraid to come out of their house, for fear this ‘thing’ will get them. Even some young children are still afraid, because they weren’t allowed to mix with their friends. There’s something wrong when a government controls a nation by fear. But we in the Church have to come alive, and become strong, and we have to overcome the fear – and give hope and life! What we need now is a Church on Fire! With the Power of God! We need another Pentecost! We need another outpouring of the Holy Spirit! I’m leading the charge, I’m leading the move… Somebody HAS to do what Peter did and declare the Glory and the Power of God – and through this will come salvation! Acts 2: 21: “Whosoever shall call on the Name of the Lord, shall be saved!” Those who call on the Name of the Lord shall be delivered from sickness, from sin, from fear… The Church today needs that kind of deliverance! The Church is constrained by fear instead of faith. The Church needs to see a renewal of the Power of God. Because, whosoever – in the Church – will call upon the Name of the Lord, they will see the Power of God revealed! But this needs a strong manifestation of faith – after all we are saved by a faith which today needs restoring!

WHY I HAVE POURED INTO RUSSIA AND UKR FOR OVER 70 YEARS David Hathaway In the 1950s, my first evangelistic meetings were supported by Russian and Polish refugees in the displacement camps here in the UK following World War II. And so, for over 70 years, I have poured all my efforts into Russia, Ukraine and all the countries of the former godless Soviet Union; the last thirty years of which since communism collapsed, and the freedom came! Why? Because without Christ they have no hope. It was with those words that I launched my appeal to evangelise Siberia and the Far East of Russia in 1994, shortly after the collapse of communism. They were in crisis. But people in the West laughed at me, they thought now that the Soviets had freedom, access to the world’s financial markets and all the ‘glories’ of the West – that was all the ‘hope’ they needed. Forgetting all my activities behind the Iron Curtain from 1961 – during which time my faith was tested to the extreme, smuggling Bibles, 2 tonnes at a time, serving one year in a communist prison because of that – from 1986 I was actively prophesying the fall of the Iron Curtain. I was already holding open evangelism in the Iron Curtain countries. But now, four times, I called people from East and West to come together in West Germany in 1988 & 89 and in 1991 & 92 – to prepare for the coming freedom and a great move of God’s Spirit – and to challenge them to get involved in this. Exactly as God had showed me, the Iron Curtain that divided East and West Europe began to fall in 1989, and in 1991 in the USSR itself. In the midst of the worldwide euphoria, God spoke again to me, still about revival, but with a strong warning, “Time is short. Another, worse curtain will come in Europe by economic collapse, by military might and by spiritual force. The Body of Christ must rise up in intercession and spiritual warfare, long enough for Europe to be saved. Satan is already defeated because Christ has won the victory. Revival is God’s promise, because He said, ‘In the last days I will pour out My Spirit.” I saw we had only a window of time in which to act. As we prayed and faithfully evangelised from the Russian Far East to

6

the Western borders, I believed God would incrementally extend the time in which we could work. And He has – with an incredible demonstration of His Power in Russia, Ukraine and in all those former East European communist countries. To fulfil this vision has been all-out spiritual warfare. Spiritual warfare is not just praying – thank God for those who pray – but it’s going out there, facing the devil head-on and rescuing souls from hell. The devil likes to disrupt everything. We knew in advance that to break his power over Russian territory – especially in Siberia and the Russian Far East where he has ruled unchallenged for at least 700 years since Genghis Khan, and including under communism – was bound to incur his wrath. Especially because the whole purpose of our evangelism is to uplift and glorify the Name of Jesus and declare Him Lord over all – ‘For this purpose was the Son of Man made manifest, to destroy the works of the evil one!’ 1 John 3:8. In 1993, the year in which God gave me the strategy to evangelise in Siberia, I had an encounter with the demon controlling Russia. I was in Chita. We were the first foreign evangelists to enter this city, and we had held 3-days’ evangelism in the stadium. Now I was in a meeting held by the local church in a rented ‘Culture House’. I had been praying with the intercessors at the back of the stage, behind the curtain, in spiritual warfare. They were telling me they had no freedom in this public building, and when they went to start the meeting, the Holy Spirit prompted me to stay on in prayer. In the darkness behind the curtain, I saw a demonic figure with green fire in its eyes – it was a bust of Lenin on a pedestal six feet high and it began to talk to me, “I am the son of Lucifer. I was in Lenin and everyone thinks I am dead, but I still live on and I am the spirit controlling Russia today.” I took authority in the Name of Jesus, breaking its hold, touching its forehead symbolically as with the Blood of Christ. From that moment the demonic curse in the building was broken – and the Gospel has been preached from the Eastern borders of Russia to the West, across 11 time zones; and in East Europe and the former communist Central Asian countries too. Revival on a scale not seen anywhere in the

world! Yet few in the West have really supported this great work. For me, my greatest success and joy has been Ukraine – where we have seen the greatest demonstration of unity in the Body of Christ anywhere on earth. In February 2014 the world watched aghast but silent, as Putin’s Russia seized the whole of Crimea in a campaign that lasted only days, and sent its special forces into East Ukraine where they have been dug in ever since. In response to this, in 2015 I called the leaders of all the Churches in Ukraine to unite in prayer, to call on God to protect the sovereignty of their nation. Few believed we could bring all the denominations together – but by a miracle we did, holding the first National Day of Prayer for Ukraine in 2016. This has grown and continued every year until now. Just days before the invasion on 24 February this year, I was in Kyiv, ministering in churches and on Christian Radio. And on the evening of Sunday 20th February, in response to my personal call, the leaders of all the Evangelical Churches, with the support of all the denominations in Ukraine, came together with me for a united prayer, calling on God to deliver the nation. We know that Putin is consulting demonic shamans. I called on God to confuse their advice, and to turn his own people against him. I called on God to deliver Ukraine, not because the nation is holy in itself, but because they are God’s chosen people, and I called on Him to protect and deliver the Church in Ukraine, the Body and Bride of His Son. Everywhere we went during our short visit, we saw an indescribable spirit of grace and of peace resting on the people – in the meetings, on the streets, in the restaurants, in the main airport. Two days after my return, Putin’s army invaded this peaceful nation. All this prophetic work of prayer and evangelism I have done together with you and with your support. I wish to thank you on behalf of all those Soviet people who were born into a world of darkness but have been reborn into the Kingdom of Light through the preaching of the Good News of Jesus Christ. This work is not yet finished.

PEACE FESTIVAL – PAKISTAN

I was in my office for only two days after my return from Ukraine; on the day the Russians invaded I was already on my way to Pakistan. This is not my mission field as I have known it all these years. I didn’t even want to go. But at the end of last year, I gave my word to a young and successful Russian evangelist who is working in Pakistan that I would go with him, because he told me, “Maybe you don’t remember me, but I have been in your meetings in Russia, and I know that you are a legend and a father in the faith. I don’t want your money, we will cover everything ourselves. But I want your power and your anointing. Please come.” So that is why I went, because it is part of my life’s work to encourage young evangelists, especially those from Russia! As I arrived, my heart was in Ukraine, following the unfolding news, blow by blow, seeing how God was giving power to this little country to stop the

8

Russian tanks. But in Karachi I found a modern city of 30 million souls, 75% Moslem, 25% ‘other’, many of whom are nominal Catholic, and many open to the Gospel. I found a people gentle and courteous, colourful and free. The roads were streaming with honking traffic day and night – tuk-tuks, brightly decorated lorries, trucks and buses, cars of every sort, and motorbikes carrying anything up to four people, wives riding side-saddle, babies in their arms – and somehow all these streams weaving seamlessly in and out of one another, like colour runs in a wash… So here I was as I had promised, but not with one Russian evangelist – he had invited 100 more! Young evangelists, eager to learn how to move more powerfully in the anointing of the Holy Spirit! It was not long before I realised the truth: many of these Russians have Ukrainian roots, with family in Ukraine, and they were hurting desperately. God has called His sons and daughters

out of every nation, tribe and tongue – Ukraine, Russia, and here in Pakistan we found His children too. For 3 nights we ministered to crowds of over 30,000, the first major Christian event post-Covid. I was given the Saturday night to speak. I shared my life’s testimony, that I am the witness to the Power of God through many tests and trials. We experienced a tremendous breakthrough and many gave their lives to Christ. After the prayer of repentance, miracles of healing began to happen all over the field. The event was streamed live on the well-known Christian TV station 61:1, who were also acting as our hosts here in Pakistan. They were astonished afterwards at the flood of healing testimonies they received online!

THE NAME ABOVE David Hathaway

We need to get back to what the Scripture says! From my earliest days I have been greatly influenced by my father who was not only a great man of God, but a Bible teacher. In my teenage years I used to debate the Word of God at great length with him. In those days we were Bible-based and it has given me a firm foundation for my faith.

THROUGH THE NAME OF JESUS. This is so important, because the Bible says here in Philippians 2:9, God has highly exalted Him and given Him a Name which is ABOVE EVERY NAME – that in the Name of Jesus, every knee should bow, things in Heaven, things in the earth and under the earth, that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the Glory of God the Father!

I want to talk about the Power that is IN THE NAME OF JESUS. We learn so much from Philippians 2:4-9, “Look not every man on his own interests, but on the interest of others. Let this mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God (one with Him), thought it not robbery to be equal with God. But He made himself of no reputation and took on the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of men… He humbled Himself, and became obedient to death, even to death of the cross. Therefore – (because He humbled Himself and was obedient to His Father, obedient even to death, this gave Him a position that nobody else can attain) – therefore God has highly exalted Him and gave Him a NAME WHICH IS ABOVE EVERY NAME!

God has put all Authority and Power into the Name of Jesus!

I want to show you the Authority and the Power that is IN THE NAME OF JESUS! People ask me how is it that I see so many miracles, so many healings? My life has been truly remarkable, partly because of the length of time that I have been in ministry, and the intensity. Very few people have seen the miracles I have seen and experienced. I believe there is a strong Scriptural reason for this: it was only recently in prayer that I felt the Lord pressing on me that the authority that I have and the miracles I see, come IN AND

10

Now look at John 14:13&14, where Jesus Himself says, “Whatsoever you ask the Father IN MY NAME, that will I do!” He says it twice! “If you ask anything in My Name, I will do it!” That’s powerful! In Philippians Paul is saying, because of His obedience to His Father, because He came and humbled Himself, and was obedient even unto death – in order to fulfil God’s purpose – God has given Jesus a NAME ABOVE ALL OTHER NAMES! And, because Jesus was sent to fulfil the purpose of God, because He was obedient, He was able to say, “Whatsoever you ask the Father in My Name, I will do it.” People question, when we are praying with the sick, do we ask or do we command the sickness to go? Look at Acts 3, Peter and John are going up to the Temple at the hour of prayer. We all know this miracle, soon after the Day of Pentecost, of the healing of the man born crippled. He was asking for money, but Peter replies, “Silver and gold have I none, but such as I have, I give you: IN THE NAME OF JESUS OF NAZARETH, get up and walk.” This is at the very beginning of the apostolic ministry, immediately after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, after Peter had stood up and preached his first Gospel message, and it is the very first individually recorded miracle of healing. Performed by the Apostles. I find it interesting that Jesus Himself must many times have gone past this crippled man on His way into the Temple. But the significant thing is that Peter says, “I don’t have money, but I’m go-

ing to give you the one thing I have – IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST OF NAZARETH, rise up and walk!” This first recorded miracle of healing took place by the Authority and the Power that is in the Name of Jesus. Peter took him by the hand and lifted him up – that’s action – and immediately the man’s feet and ankle bones received strength. He stood up, leaping and walking. I love this picture! Here is a man born lame, who’s never walked! I’ve had children myself. When they first learn to walk, they don’t do it like they eventually will. I can still picture my young children taking their early steps. But here’s a grown man who doesn’t know how to put one foot in front of the other! So he’s leaping and walking, amazed and shocked at the miracle that has happened to him! Miracles drew the attention of the crowds in the life of Jesus, and in the early Church. So a crowd ran together around Peter and the healed man, marvelling! Peter says, “Why do you look on us, as if by our own power or holiness we have made this man walk? The God of our fathers has glorified His Son Jesus” – glorified Him not only in the Resurrection, but in this miracle – “and it’s through faith IN HIS NAME that has made this man strong… Yes, the faith that is in Him has given this man perfect healing in front of you all!” Acts 2:12-16. It’s absolutely clear – the healing came IN THE NAME OF JESUS and THROUGH FAITH IN THAT NAME. Thirty years ago in the Ukraine, when I was praying for the sick in the stadiums shortly after the collapse of communism, thousands would come forward for healing. You could estimate if there were 10,000 in the crowd, two thirds would need a miracle of healing – that’s why they came – for healing! And God healed them! But the excommunist government in Ukraine tried to stop me saying, “You can’t do this unless you have a certificate from your government as an approved healer.” There’s no such a thing! The Bible is my only certificate. But I used to say to the crowds, “Look, I’m NOT a healer. Jesus is the Healer.” And I taught THEM to pray IN HIS NAME. I would quote from Mark 16: Jesus said, these signs will follow those who be-

EVERY NAME! lieve, IN MY NAME they will lay hands on the sick and they will be healed. So I would say to them, “Lay YOUR hands on your sickness and call upon Jesus, and HE will heal you.” And I would lead them in a prayer in the Name of Jesus. And there is no question, healing is still IN THE NAME OF JESUS. In fact, when I pray, whatever I pray – whether I’m praying for health, whether I’m praying over problems, anything – I always pray in the Name of Jesus. Just as He said in John 14:13, “Whatsoever you ask the Father in My Name, that will I do!” My prayer and my requests are in the Name of Jesus! I’m surprised there are people who don’t do this. I bring every request in the Name of Jesus: “Father, I’m asking You in Jesus’ Name…” And perhaps this is the strongest reason why I get a very high proportion of answers to prayer. But – do we ask, or do we command? Yes, there are times when I ask. I’ll say, “Father, in Jesus’ Name I ask for a miracle…” That’s what I did when I was sick. But there are also times when, with Authority, we can command. Every time a storm comes in my openair meetings – and I’ve seen that at least 10 or 12 times – I command the storm to go in Jesus’ Name. Most recently this happened in Caesarea on the shores of the Mediterranean. They told me it was the greatest storm they had ever seen. I leapt up on the platform, and I didn’t say, “O Lord, please help”, but I said, “In the Name of Jesus I have Authority and I command the storm to stop!” It stopped immediately! I would suggest we can sense when we have the Authority – and some of us do have it. I’m always intrigued by the Roman centurion who came to Jesus saying, “My servant is sick.” The immediate response of Jesus was, “I will come to your house.” But the centurion says, “No, You don’t need to come to my house. You are a Man under Authority. I’m a man under authority. I’m a commanding officer, and I have 100 men under me, and they do what I command. I’m their officer, I have authority over them, I command and they obey. Jesus, You’re exactly the same. All You have to do is speak the word – and my servant will be healed.” Jesus did just that, and the servant was indeed healed at that very moment!

So there are times when we are conscious we have that Authority. In my own ministry, there are times when I’m saying, “Lord, please do this”, and equally, there are times when I command, “In the Name of Jesus, I command this blindness to go, I command your eyes to open.” I do this, knowing I have the Authority. It was Jesus who said, “Whatsoever you ask IN MY NAME, I will do it.” So sometimes I ask, and sometimes, with the Authority I have in Jesus’ Name, I command. Because Philippians 2 says, ‘God has highly exalted Jesus and given HIM a Name above every name.’ In the translation of the New Testament I use, the Name of Jesus occurs 973 times! That’s almost 1000 times! The Name of Jesus is so critical, so important – He has a NAME! Today, if you talk about someone remarkable – an actor, a scientist, a politician, a leader – they have a NAME – and they are known, by name, for what they do. That person has a name as an explorer, as an athlete… You can name tennis players, swimmers, football players – you know the specific thing they do by their name. But Jesus has a NAME! He has a NAME spoken by the Angel Gabriel, “You shall call His Name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins.” And literally He became our salvation! It is a specific NAME, and it conveys the specific Authority and Power God has put in the Name of Jesus! The Power in my ministry comes from the recognition that, like Peter and John, I have no power of myself. The only Power I have is committed to me and passed to me through Jesus. Through Jesus who said, “Don’t do it in your power, in your strength, DO IT IN MY NAME.” That’s why when I pray for the sick, I say, “I’m no healer, I’m no miracle worker. It’s Jesus! Let’s call on the Name of Jesus!” Let’s call on His Name – whether you ask, or whether this is a time when you sense you have such Authority that you can command the situation. Just as the centurion said to Jesus, I knew, when I was in that storm on the Mediterranean in Caesarea in 2016, that I had an Authority to deal with the issue. It would have been no use to stand up there publicly and plead, “O Lord, could You help me stop the storm? We can’t start the meeting, the people can’t come in, because the wind is threatening to bring down the gantry on the stage, people could die…” No! I couldn’t say that! Because I knew at that moment that I had the Authority to command the storm to stop. Every time I have stopped storms, every time I have seen the biggest miracles, it is because I have come with Authority IN THE NAME OF JESUS. Father, I pray that You would open our eyes to understand the Authority You have given us in the Name of Jesus. Father, glorify that Name, as when Peter and John used that Name for that first great miracle. Lord, bring back the Power and that Authority we have in Jesus’ Name.

David Hathaway When I received the Holy Spirit in my teens, I asked Him for the gift of faith. So many like to think they have the gift of faith. But there must be a reality to the gifts of the Holy Spirit. James, the halfbrother of the Lord, writes in James 1:3ff, that the testing of our faith works patience, so that we may become perfect and entire – in other words, faith has to be tested to prove its reality. James 1:5 continues, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.” That’s a strong challenge. I try to live out this verse, in that I try always to ask God’s advice. One of my younger co-workers recently asked me how I pray? I don’t believe in formal prayers. In my relationship with the Lord, prayer is a conversation, so that when I talk to the Lord in prayer, I also expect to receive answers from Him. Prayer has to be more than just one-sided; it has to be a two-way communication to be real effective prayer. Most of you know my testimony, the two times I had cancer – 1964 when it was throat cancer, and 2002/3 when it was lung cancer – on both occasions when I was asking the Lord for a miracle, I also asked Him to give me an answer. How did I get the answer? As I so often do, I said, “Lord I want to see it in writing!” I get the answer in the pages of my Bible – it is God’s Word to you and to me! And so often that’s how God answers me. Although sometimes the answer is just something I sense in my spirit. So coming back to James 1:5ff, he says, “If any lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men liberally – without criticising! But ask in faith, without wavering – because he who wavers is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed with the wind.” Faith has to come with an element of stability, just as God is stable, and we’re asking, we’re trusting, we’re acting on that faith. James says, the man who wavers, let him not think he’ll receive anything! Faith has to be consistent; you have to hold on to that faith. Or you won’t get anything. Now in James 2:14ff, he says, “What does it profit if you say you have faith, but have no works? Can such faith save you?” We know we are saved by faith, not by our works. But ‘works’ here is not contradictory to ‘faith’, it is comple-

12

mentary. Scripture says we are saved by faith, which is the free gift of God, Ephesians 2:8-9. But James is adding, if you have faith, but you don’t have any evidence resulting from it, can that faith alone save you? James is a practical man, he says in v15, “If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says, “Go in peace, be blessed, God will warm you and fill you…” – such faith is DEAD!” They’re hungry and homeless and needy. Be practical, give them the help they ask for! What use is it if you don’t give them the things that they need? In other words, your faith must result in some action! James says, without accompanying action, without ‘works’, faith alone is DEAD, v17. When I was a young pastor, God called me with a tremendous challenge, I think it was after a Sunday service. He said to me, “Stop talking, I’m tired of listening to you. Go out and do all the things you are talking about! And don’t come back until you’ve done it!” The Holy Spirit was literally saying to me what James is saying here, that if you have faith, that faith has to become action. And the testimony of my life is that my faith has led me to action. I have done so many things by faith. Going back to 1961, I had said by faith that I would go by road from Britain to Jerusalem, in order to attend a great Pentecostal Conference – the first to be held in Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost in 2000 years! I was a poor evangelist with a wife and small children, I didn’t have the money for the air ticket. But to go by road took me two years of hard work – obtaining visas and permissions to go through the communist countries and through nations hostile to Israel and getting people to go with me – for that faith, which I had expressed, to be converted into action! I had said I was going, and I went, confirming my faith by what I did. The result was it changed my life and my ministry! James says, faith without works is DEAD. Our faith has to be demonstrated; it must be translated into action. In v18, James continues, “A man may say, you have faith, and I have works.” Yes, anyone can say they have faith, but I live to demonstrate my love for God by what I do. The challenge is, as James says, “Show me your faith without your work, and I will show you my faith by

the work I do.” The practical challenge here is simply, that if you say you believe and trust God and that you are saved by faith, but your life doesn’t demonstrate it, then I will say, I will demonstrate my faith by the way I live. Just to say you have faith, can bring you into an issue of ‘religion’, where any religion is so-called ‘faith’. Faith is not a theory or a doctrine in a book, it’s a life, it’s a life changing trust in God! The life I live is a life of faith in God! When I had my second cancer, lung cancer, in 2002/3, just as the previous time, I said no to treatment. I live by faith, and by faith I refused any operation. When I had throat cancer in 1964, I was pastor of a church which, under my ministry had seen tremendous miracles. We still have the newspaper reports of the blind seeing, cripples walking – this was in the local newspaper! My congregation really challenged me saying, “It’s all very well telling us to have faith. But now you have cancer, what are you going to do?” I had to say to the Lord, “Lord, I have to demonstrate my faith. I cannot have an operation!” Both times I had cancer I prayed for 3 months before I was healed, and with this lung cancer, it actually came out of my mouth in a massive cough! I was in bed at the time, and they had to burn the bed afterwards! So, James says, some people say they’ve got faith, but they mean faith in a religion, they don’t demonstrate faith in a living God who answers prayer. But I try to demonstrate in my life, not only my faith, but my trust in a prayer answering God! In v19, James writes, “You believe there is one God, you do well…” This is a challenge I often use in evangelism, “Do you believe in God?” – and they’ll say, “Yes, I believe.” And when I challenge them, what do you believe, some will answer, “I believe everything!” That means, anything and nothing! The last census in Britain recorded that about 50% of the population said they believed in God... But James says, “Yes, you’re doing very well, aren’t you, saying you believe, but even the devils believe in God!!!” They do! James says they tremble – in fear – because their faith is so real, they are afraid of God and His Power!!! Scripture says the soul that sins will die. If you reject God, you reject His Salva-

United National Days of Prayer for Ukraine tion. Faith comes by believing that Jesus died on a cross for you. But this faith has to be something active, that changes your life! Just to say, “I believe in God” doesn’t mean a thing. James puts it bluntly, “Even the devil knows there is a God.” When I was preaching as a teenager, I used to quote the Scripture, “The fool says in his heart there is no God.” That’s quite a challenge to scientists and philosophers! But the devil knows there is a God. James writes in v20, “Don’t you know, O vain man, that faith without works is DEAD?” He continues in v21, that Abraham was justified by works when he laid his son on the altar. James is saying, do you see Abraham’s faith in God’s Promise – that through his seed, He would create a nation so big, like the grains of sand on the seashore and the stars in the sky without number – that when God asked him to sacrifice his son, in faith he binds him and puts him on the altar! And only then God strikes the knife out of his hand and provides the ram to be the sacrifice in his stead. But when he offered his son Isaac on the altar, Abraham’s faith was justified and proved, v21ff, because he combined his faith with his works, with what he did; and by his work, his faith was demonstrated, proved and made perfect. And so Scripture was fulfilled, which says Abraham believed

God and it was imputed to him as righteousness, v23. Salvation in the Old Testament came by looking forward to the cross, in anticipation that God would provide the sacrifice for our sin. When Abraham put his son on that altar, it was in faith that sin required a living sacrifice, and that God would raise that sacrifice from the dead. And when God stayed the knife in Abraham’s hand, He was demonstrating that He, God, would send His Own Son to be the Sacrifice, and allow Him to go through death to bring us Salvation. Today our Salvation is looking back, retrospectively, believing that 2000 years ago God so loved the world that He gave His Only Son as the Atonement of our sin. So in James 2:22-23, we see Abraham combined his faith with what he did: his faith was made perfect, it was imputed to him for righteousness, and he was called the friend of God! Oh, that this might be said about us! “You see,” James says in v24, “by works a man’s faith is demonstrated, and not by faith alone.” Faith HAS to be followed by fact. “For,” v26, “as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is DEAD also.” The ‘works’ are the very spirit that give LIFE to the body of ‘faith’. God bless you.

THE GENERATION OF THE LORD Katie Morris I was reading Matthew 14:12-13, how when Jesus heard that John the Baptist had been beheaded, He took a ship and left where He was for a ‘desert place’. I guess, to pray. I wondered what He might have intended to ponder on, what was on His mind, would He have strengthened Himself, reflecting on the Scriptures which told Him, He also was going to die? And the reason why… I turned to Psalm 22, the famous crucifixion psalm, “My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?... You have brought Me to the dust of death… They pierced My Hands and Feet, they parted My garments among them and cast lots for my raiment…” But, the psalm continues in vv22,27-31, “I will declare Your Name…” And… “All the ends of the earth shall turn to the Lord, all the families of the nations will bow down before You… For the Kingdom is the Lord’s…” And… “All that go down to the dust shall bow before Him – none can keep themselves alive… A seed shall serve Him and shall be accounted to the Lord as a GENERATION, and they shall declare His righteousness to a people still to be born!” So many thoughts began to germinate in my mind! Here in this psalm, I saw the resurrection of those who had gone ‘down to the dust’ – died in times past – and the resurrection of a people still to be born. But my first attention fell on this one word: GENERATION. I’d always thought of a generation as 40 years, or 70 years, as the older generation, the younger generation, future generations – a period of time. No! Suddenly the bigger picture is this: God is looking for a ‘GENERATION’ – born of His Spirit! John 1:12-13 says of Jesus, ‘as many as received Him, to them He gave the Power to become the sons of God, to them that believe in His Name, which are BORN, not of

14

blood, nor of the will of man, BUT OF GOD!’ To that religious ruler, Nicodemus, Jesus said, “Except a man be BORN AGAIN, he cannot see the Kingdom of God… that which is born of flesh is flesh, but that which is born of the Spirit is spirit… For God so loved the world, that He gave His Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting LIFE.” This is the ‘GENERATION’ God is seeking, those who are generated, born, by faith in Christ – as God’s owns sons and daughters! Paul reminds us in Romans 3:23, all have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God. Satan robbed God of His Children, created in His Image, in the Garden of Eden. We all therefore are born in sin, we are all the generation of Adam, made in his fallen and now mortal image: ‘dust thou art and unto dust thou shalt return’, Genesis 3:19. People today don’t like the concept of sin, and prefer to believe their children are born innocent with a ‘blank white sheet’ – upon which circumstances and people write a story... I remember – with a smile, I must admit – the first time I saw my granddaughter sin. She and her stronger twin brother could only roll about, they could not yet sit, let alone crawl. That day, the stronger twin rolled over his little sister one time too many. Her tiny body tensed in fury. She stretched out her little arm with great and deliberate effort – and pinched her brother and made him cry! Who taught her that? How did she know to retaliate and inflict pain? The Bible tells quite freely of the sins of Israel and the Jewish nation – also of the abominations of the heathen nations round about. Jesus did not say to Nicodemus, you are born of a righteous, line, you are a holy generation. He said, Nicodemus, if you want to see the Kingdom of God, you must be

BORN AGAIN. He did not say to the religious leaders of His day, you will inherit the Kingdom. He said they were a brood, a GENERATION OF VIPERS! Matthew 12:34, 23:33. Surely this is the truth according to Genesis 3! And when the ordinary folk were looking to His disciples for healing – and they could not heal the boy with epilepsy – Jesus called them too a ‘PERVERSE GENERATION’; they had so little faith in who He was and what He had come to do. In January I was sitting in a very beautiful traditional church building with a young co-worker. She asked me how I liked the festoons of super-lavish Christmas decorations, reds, greens and golds in abundance. I said that I like Christmas lights and winter decorations in this dark season, especially at home and in the streets, it’s cheery and cosy. But, I said, it does nothing for me spiritually, because the birth of Jesus is a daily reality for me, He’s been born into my heart, He lives in me and is being formed in me. Galatians 4:19. She looked back at me, her face shining with emotion. And then she said, “I grew up with very lovely parents, but I understood that what was inside them was not inside me. Now Christ is inside me too.” Her description of her new birth deeply touched me – and it was this young woman that I thought of, as I read Psalm 22 and mediated on the generation Christ came to die for. How precious it is that, as He prepared Himself to die for us, His thoughts were for this ‘GODLY GENERATION’, these sons and daughters of God, born as children of God, by the Will of God, from His pierced Side. For Scripture says: “You shall make His Soul an offering for sin, and He shall see His seed…” Isaiah 53. “Here am I and the children You have given Me…” Isaiah 8:18; Hebrews 2:13. His seed, His offspring, His children. HIS ‘GENERATION’. You and me.

OVER 70 YEARS OF MINISTRY SINCE 1950

The most important read in this current world crisis – the biography of

DAVID HATHAWAY Available on Kindle and in Paperback War in Ukraine – confused, afraid? – This book traces over 70 years of David’s unique ministry in the former Soviet Union which began under the persecution of communism. In his own words: “God has given me a vision of Russia, Europe and Israel so clear, it’s like looking down on a map of the devil’s strategy, but I also see God’s strategy, what He wants us to do. This puts an awesome responsibility on us to act.” David is known as a living legend and a hero of faith in all the former communist countries. This book reveals God’s heart, which has driven David from his earliest days – and still drives him today. We trust it will give you some clarity on prophecy as it unfolds before your eyes – and that it will inspire you to follow Jesus in the same spirit – for it is the Gospel which is the Power of God to save all who will believe.
