OnetimeinBulgaria,whenitwasstillundercommunism,Iwaspreachinginthe capitalcity,Sofia.Thepastorwasso afraidoftheconsequencesofhavinginvitedme,helefttown.Themeetingin Sofiawassopowerful,IwasaskedifI wouldgonextdaytoanothercity,Yambol,quitesomedistanceaway.Itwassecretive:Ihadtogetupat4inthemorning,gooutaloneintothecitysquare, andgetintoanunknowncarwith peopleIdidn’tknow.Ittooksomething like5or7hourstogetthere,butwhen wedid,thechurchwasabsolutelyfull.I’ll neverforgetthatday.IsawtheHoly Spiritreallycomedownandmanifestin Power.Iwassittingbythegirlsinthe choir,andthegirlnexttomebegan speakingintongues–anuneducated girlsayinginperfectEnglish, “Iloveyou Jesus,I’llnevergoanywherewithoutYou Jesus!”

However,in2020,neighbouring Azerbaijan,weaponisedbyTurkey–bothMoslemcountries–launchedan aggressivewaragainsttraditionally ChristianArmenia,seizingterritoryin ChristianNagornoKarabakh.Churches weredestroyedandChristiancommunitiesdecimated.Afteronly40dis-

Howeverthecriminaloligarchs,withthe supportofmanyembitteredbythewar, thelossoftheirsonsandthelossofnationalterritory,areagainattemptingto takecontrolofgovernmentaland othernationalstructuresandbusinesses.Ifthesecriminalpeopletake control,theywilldestroythechurches. WhatishappeninginArmeniamirrors verycloselythestruggleinUkrainethat beganin2004/5,2013/2014andnow todayin2022... Saturdaywasaconferenceforpastors andleadersundertheleadershipof PastorRafaelinVanadzor.PastorRafael cametoChristasayoungmanunder strongcommunistpersecution;hewas
discovered,interrogated,and threatened,ifhedidnotdenyhisfaith inChrist,hiswholefamily,parentsand siblings,wouldbedeportedtoprison campsinSiberia.Mercifully,suddenly, thisdidn’thappenbecause Gorbachevcametopowerwithhis newpoliciesofopennessandperestroika. Aftercommunismfell,andtheUSSRdividedintoindependentstates,Armenia continuedtoberuledandabusedby ‘ex’communists,acriminalmafiaofoligarchs–ashappenedinallthose newlyindependentcountries.They lootedtherichnaturalandnuclearresourcesofArmenia,investingtheirillegallygottengainsoutsidethecountryin RussiaandintheWest–leavingthe peopleimpoverished. In2018NikolPashinyanwaselected PrimeMinisterofArmenia,amanof verysimplepersonallifestyle.Hebegan immediatelytofulfilhiselectionpledge torootoutthecorruptionthatwasdestroyingthecountry.

ThesecondDayofPrayerwas11August1940: The‘BattleofBritain’–the battleforcontroloftheskiesoverBritain–hadbegun.Britain’sairpower wasderisory.On30August800enemy aircraftblackenedtheskiestoputour keyairfieldsoutofaction,andby6 Septemberdefeatappearedinevitable. Goddestroyedthemostpowerful armyintheworld,theEgyptianarmy. Butwehavetoremember,Hedidnot chooseusbecauseweweremighty, butbecause HEismighty;Hedidnot chooseusbecauseofourrighteousness, butbecauseofthewickednessofthe enemy–Deuteronomy7:6-7and9:1-5.
Butweshouldneverthinkthatourfaith isinvain, eventhoughmanypeople likenthesedaystothedaysimmediatelybeforetheoutbreakoftheFirst WorldWar.EverynationinEurope–andbeyond–wastofinditselfcaught upintheconflict.Ultimatelythewhole worldwasinvolved.Buttheendingof thatwarin1918solvednothing: Europeitselfwasleftinadarkrevolutionaryturmoilofatheism,libertarianism,communism,socialism,fascism, nazism,until,25yearslater,Europeand thewholeworldwereagainatwar. YeteveryEuropeannation,Eastand West,includingGermany,haditsheroesoffaithinthosedarkhoursofthe SecondWorldWar–peoplewho prayed,peoplewhotookaction, peoplewhoriskedeverythingforthe truth. Thereispowerinprayer.We couldwriteaboutthoselikePastor NiemöllerinGermanywhostood againstnazisminhisowncountry(one ofthefoundersofthe‘Confessing Church’,heopenlyopposedthenazificationoftheGermanProtestant Churchesandwasheldinconcentrationcampsfrom1937-1945);wecould alsotellofthoseinHolland,Denmark, BulgariaandalloverEuropewho shelteredandsavedJewsfromthe Holocaust. Britainin1940wasstillaChristian country. Everysoldierwasissueda copyoftheGospels,inscribedwith thesewords: ‘WecommendtheGospelofChristourSaviourforitalone caneffectivelymouldcharacter,controlconductandsolvetheproblemsof menandnationsandthusmakelife whatitshouldbe.FaithinChristthe LordandloyalobediencetoHiswillas revealedintheBibleensurespeaceof mindandbringssatisfactioninservice toGodandman.’ Thisstatementwas signedbytheCommandersinChiefof theRoyalNavy,theArmyandtheAir Force.Seventimes,againstoverwhelmingenemyodds,KingandParliamentcalledthewholenationto prayer.Seventimesthewholenation turnedoutandfilledthechurches,includingthosewhohadnotbeento churchforyearsandthosewhohad neverbeen. EachtimeGodanswered byaremarkableactofdeliverance.I wasaboyinLondonatthetime.Our prayerisnotinvain.
Icanstronglydeclare,thereisno strongerpowerknowntomenthanthe powerofprayer.Prayerthatreceives ananswerisanexpressionofourfaith andconfidenceinaGodwhoanswers!Butifyoupray,andyoudon’t expectananswer,letmeaskyou, whydoyoupray?!Jesustaughtwe oughtalwaystoprayandnevergive up–usingthestoryofthewidowand thejudge.Luke18:1.
WithRussianaggressioninUkraineon ourdoorstep,thesearedangerous timesforthewholeofEurope.Indeed, theshadowoffear,hunger,poverty, andGodforbid,worldwar,hasbeen castaroundthewholeworldbythis onemoveon24Februarythisyear.

PRAY–NEVERGIVEUP!
ThefifthDayofPrayerwasinSeptember1942. Intheweekthatfollowed, Mussolini’sfleetwassunkintheMediterranean;theislandofMalta,which controlstheMediterranean,wasmiraculouslydelivered;andunderGeneral Montgomery,aborn-againChristian, thecourseofthewarinNorthAfrica waschangedatEl-Alameinfromunmitigateddefeattovictory.Churchill said,“BeforeEl-Alamein,weneverhad avictory,afterEl-Alameinwenever hadadefeat.”
Godspoketomeclearlyasearlyas 1986. HetoldmethattheIronCurtain thathadseparatedEastandWest Europeforsolongwouldbemeltedby theFireofHisHolySpiritandthata newgreatMoveoftheSpiritwould sweepacrossthewholeofEurope fromEasttoWest;thatthiswouldnot beanactofman,butasovereignact ofGod.But,whilstthewholeworldwas ineuphoriaoverthefalloftheIron Curtain,Godalsowarnedmethat, afteraperiodoffreedom,anew‘curtain’wouldfallacrossEurope,byeconomiccollapse,bymilitarymight,and byspiritualforce.Nobodytookmeseriously.
ThesixthDayofPrayer,on3September1943, wasansweredimmediately bythesurrenderofItalyunderMussolini. Therewasafinal,seventhNationalDay ofPrayerinSpring1944 immediately beforetheD-Daylandingswhichwere tobringthewarinEuropetoaclose.
Beginningwithaspiritualvacuumin theWest,wehaveenteredthosetimes now. Whatevermaylieahead,weshould alwayspray–andnevergiveup!IbelieveinaGodwhostillanswersprayer, andwhoislookingtofindfaithonthe earth.Asforme,Iamlookingforthe ‘greatermiracles’thatJesussaidwe woulddoinHisName,greaterthan anythingeverseenonthisearthbefore.
ButaftertheWarended,Europewas inruinsanddividedbythe‘IronCurtain’intoEastandWest.Throughthe continuingdarknightinthecommunist East,theheroesoffaith,theprayer warriors,soldieredon.Theseweremen andwomenwhosacrificedeverything sothattheGospelcouldbepreached andBiblessmuggledinanddistributed –until,firstin1989inHungary,Czechoslovakia,BerlinandRomania,andfinallyin1991intheSovietUnionitself, communismcollapsed.
