Italian Renaissance (c. 1400 -1700)

Women were meant to embody virtue, and their value was linked to their relationship with men because the quality of both a wife’s behaviour and looks reflected her husband’s status. Beauty in Renaissance Italy meant a rounded body, including full hips and large breasts. Pale skin, strawberry blonde hair, and high foreheads were also thought of as the height of physical beauty.

Victoria England (c. 1837-1901)

Beauty in the Victorian era of England was all about the number of children that could be born to a woman and how she could play the role of motherhood. Therefore, the style of the time reflected women’s motherly position in society. Women wore corsets to clinch their waists as tightly as possible, creating an hourglass figure.

Golden Age of Hollywood (c. 1930s-1950s)

During this time, flaunted curvier bodies with slim waists are depicted as being the idealized version of the female body. A famous example is the well-known movie star, Marilyn Monroe.

Swinging Sixties and Heroin Chic (c. 1960s-1990s)

A liberated movement that saw more women in the workplace gave rise to feminism. It helped usher miniskirts and A-line shapes into fashion, which were best modeled by Twiggy, whose slender frame changed the ideal body type from curvy to tall and thin.

Postmodern Beauty (c. 2000s -Today)
