Dear Student Welcome to your BIMM Brighton 2013/14 prospectus. Inside you will find everything you need to make an informed choice about the next stage in your education. We have included details on our Further and Higher Education courses, industry specialist tutors, life in Brighton, course fees, career development and pastoral support. Since BIMM was established more than 10 years ago, our aim has been to help every aspiring musician and music industry professional to achieve their personal goals and to enable them to gain the experience, the professionalism and the qualifications that will lead to a sustainable career in the music industry. Success is in our history – read up on some of our Alumni Stories on pages 10-11. This year there have been some exciting developments at BIMM Brighton opening up a wider range of career options for graduates and a broader creative community. We are delighted to announce three new BA (Hons) programmes in Event Management, Music Production and Music Business Studies. You will find full specifications detailed in here along with our specialist Guitar, Bass, Drums, Songwriting and Vocals courses. Music Production will be taught at a stateof–the-art newly developed studio facility based in our original building in Rock Place! To provide a more flexible range of study options our new Music Business and Event Management courses will be delivered in both the traditional three-year model and as a two-year intensive programme. These courses are also available for you to enrol and start in April or September 2013.

To coincide with the expansion of our curriculum we have this year joined UCAS (University Central Admissions System) - the nationally recognised route into Higher Education for all HE applicants. Our admissions team will provide all the support you need to apply to BIMM – please call us for a personal assessment and review to help you select the right course. BIMM Higher Education courses in Brighton are validated by our partner the University of Sussex - recently ranked in the top 10 of UK Universities. BIMM and the University of Sussex are proud to share the same values of excellence and dedication to our students’ success. Our Further Education Courses are offered in partnership with Central Sussex College and provide the perfect route into Higher Education at BIMM. About BIMM Brighton BIMM provides a creative community and a natural home to aspiring musicians and music industry professionals. Our fully accredited, intensive courses are for individuals who are committed to a career in music or the music industry. BIMM Brighton has three main sites: BIMM East, BIMM West and BIMM House. BIMM House opened in September 2009 and boasts stunning performance and large group facilities - BIMM East will be home to our new Music Production suite. Live performance classes are delivered inhouse and at local live performance venues - giving you the chance to find your own sound and style in a professional live environment. Now in its 10th year, Brighton was selected as the base for our original college because of the vibrant music and arts scene, the availability of gigs, studios, record labels and artists – and of course the great seaside culture. All our tutors are experts in their field and ready to share their knowledge and skills to help you get ahead in a highly competitive industry.

In addition to our superb teaching spaces, with full PA and backline, we have put together a comprehensive collection of provintage and modern equipment for every specialism; we encourage musicians at BIMM to develop their own style and an innovative approach to performance and songwriting. BIMM also provides rehearsal space in our own rooms outside term time, as well as availability at two rehearsal studios in Brighton and Hove – Monster Studios and Brighton Electric. Since opening in 2002, BIMM has established centres in Bristol and Dublin.

BRIGHTON & HOVE THE place to study Music is at Brighton’s very core. Every night of the week you’ll hear the sound of live bands pulsing across the city, whether it’s bizarre buskers on New Road, international acts at Concorde 2 and the Brighton Centre or a local band on stage at one of Brighton’s hundreds of venues, bars, pubs and clubs. Many of these bands are from BIMM!

Brighton’s many venues make it a paradise for live music lovers and performers with gigs easy to come by and open mic nights available from Monday to Sunday. Throughout May the city hosts The Brighton Festival (England’s largest arts festival), The Brighton Fringe and The Great Escape music festival, bringing together musicians, artists, actors and comedians in one amazing month, generating a fantastic melting pot of talent to inspire you. This thriving cultural scene and proximity to London are what sets Brighton apart from other cities in the UK and has long made it a magnet for creative people from all over the world. In addition to the music and arts scene, there is plenty to see and do. Explore the seaside culture, the world famous beach and pier, relax in the cosmopolitan cafes, bars and restaurants or soak up the city’s history at the Brighton Pavilion and Museum.

The Lanes and North Laine Brighton’s unique and vibrant ‘Lanes’ and ‘North Laine’ represent some of the best independent retail and entertainment businesses in the country selling everything from clothes and records to comics, art and musical instruments. Be sure to check out Snoopers Paradise a treasure trove of vintage clothes, antiques and retro games and toys.

We also continue to work with graduates through our alumni careers programme, ‘The A-Team’.


Work-based Learning BIMM is committed to sustaining its role as a centre of excellence for Work Based Learning and ensuring all students have access to placements appropriate to their course. We have unique links with the music industry and use our extensive contacts to generate opportunities for students to engage with the music industry. Students have access to a WBL advisor who will discuss career goals either as musicians or industry practitioners. BIMM continually monitors placements and projects to ensure they are successful and offer students a safe and secure learning environment. All students are invited to attend one-toone tutorials with the WBL team to discuss CVs and career action plans. We also offer support to graduates with employment opportunities, auditions and career events.

Learn from Industry Professionals The key to developing a career is to learn from successful professionals. All BIMM tutors are actively involved in music and the music business at the highest level and students also enjoy meeting with top level music industry guests in weekly master classes.

Tutorials Alongside discipline specific lessons and larger group lectures and performance sessions, our students are encouraged to seek one-to-one support, to discuss their career or instrument development with a relevant tutor, there is a wide choice of tutors available for these tutorials.

BEN THOMPSON As live drummer for Two Door Cinema Club, Ben has toured the globe seven times. He has also performed at most major festivals worldwide, the NME awards and on (BBC TV) Later…With Jools Holland. In 2012 Two Door Cinema Club played at T in The Park, Reading Festival, Ibiza Rocks and across Europe and the US.

for a Brit Award and won MTV Europe’s Best UK Act. In 2012, they performed alongside Radiohead and The Stone Roses at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan.

NATASHA BENT Natasha has made a name for herself as a very successful booking agent. She is currently working at The Agency Group in London who represent artists including Muse and My Chemical Romance.

LUKE SITAL-SINGH THE KOOKS The Kooks have sold millions of albums worldwide. Their second album Konk went straight into the UK album chart at No 1. Their 2006 debut Inside In, Inside Out achieved triple platinum sales, they were nominated 10

both BBC 6 Music and XFM for his debut single ‘Fail For You’.

Luke has already established himself within BBC’s Introducing arena, gaining him a slot at Glastonbury 2010 and recent sessions on 6 Music and Radio 2. Following support from Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne and Dermot O‘Leary, Luke has been featured on playlists for

LAWSON BIMM Graduate Adam Pitts is now drumming for charttopping band Lawson. In 2011, Lawson were a support act for one of Britain’s biggest pop bands; The Wanted on their ‘The Behind Bars Tour’. The band made a great impression on the audience and received great reviews. They returned in 2012 for The Wanted’s ‘The Code’ Tour. They also supported The Saturdays, Westlife, Will Young and Avril Lavigne. Now signed to Polydor they have completed two of their own UK headline tours and reached No.4 in the charts with their debut single ‘When She Was Mine’.


ROB SHAW – SESSION ARTIST Last year saw session drummer Rob Shaw perform on the TV promo tour for Jennifer Hudson featuring on: The Graham Norton Show, So You Think You Can Dance, Daybreak and The Album Chart Show. He has also performed on The X Factor. Rob is currently gigging with newly released Sony/ Phonogenic artist EJ and in 2012 performed with Nelly Furtado on Alan Carr’s Chatty Man.

Charlie McLean – BiffCo Song writing. Working alongside Biff Stannard as his assistant, Charlie has had the opportunity to work with artists such as Ellie Goulding, One Direction, Pixie Lott, the newly reformed original Sugababes, Little Mix and Susan Boyle as a backing vocalist. In addition she will be joining the writing team to work on Susan Boyle’s new album and she is quickly establishing herself as a talented engineer.

BETH ROWLEY BIMM graduate Beth Rowley performed backing vocals for artists such as Ronan Keating and Enrique Iglesias during her time at BIMM. After graduating, she went on to be signed to major label Universal with her debut album reaching No. 6 in the UK Album Chart. Beth has collaborated with Crowded House, Duke Special and more recently with Burt Bacharach on BBC Electric Proms. Other TV appearances include Parkinson, Top of the Pops, This Morning, The Charlotte Church Show and GMTV

JASON KING - THE GYPSY QUEENS The Gypsy Queens have signed a lucrative record deal with Universal Music and are playing up to 250 gigs a year, including performances in front of Sir Elton John and Rod Stewart. Jason King plays double bass and says “Joining the Gypsy Queens is the best thing I’ve ever done!”

KATE WALSH BIMM songwriting graduate Kate Walsh became the first unsigned act to top the iTunes chart with her second album Tim’s House. She knocked Take That from the top slot and secured distribution with Mercury Records (Universal). Kate continues to write and record music on her own label Blueberry Pie and is now a tutor at BIMM.

Jordan Whitmore Jordan is part of the A&R department at Atlantic Records which plays home to artists such as ‘Death Cab for Cutie’, ‘Jason Mraz’ and ‘Missy Elliott’. Jordan graduated from BIMM in 2010 with a BA (Hons) in Professional Musicianship.

Victoria Smith Richie Ramone BIMM Graduate Victoria has worked as a session bassist recording and touring with many successful bands including girl rockers McQueen and the all girl Ramones tribute the Ramonas. Other credits include, Hanoi Rocks, The Misfits and Sham 69.

Heads of Department Jim Williams Head of Guitar As a session guitarist, Jim has extensive live and studio experience with artists as diverse as This Mortal Coil, Pete Murphy, Maxi Priest, M-People and Craig Armstrong (Massive Attack). Also an accomplished composer, he has co-written with successful songwriters like The Matrix and Terry Walker, and writes and produces many scores for TV and film. His composition earned him an Ivor Novello award nomination in 2006. Franc O’Shea Head of Bass Franc has recorded and played with many renowned artists including Steve Howe (Yes), Mike Lindup (Level 42), Lisa Moorish, top garage band Bah Samba and Jorge Pardo (Chick Corea / Paco de Lucia). He’s also appeared on albums alongside top bassists such as Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten and is a regular contributor for ‘Bass Guitar’ magazine.

Pat Garvey Head of Drums Pat has been a professional drummer since he was 17. As a busy session player, he’s played on more than 300 recordings, having enjoyed residencies at some of the UK’s biggest recording studios. He’s also toured all over the world and signed major and independent recording and publishing deals. His many TV appearances include Later… with Jools Holland, MTV UK and America, and Top of the Pops. Kate Cameron Head of Vocals A professional session singer for many years, Kate has sung on several gold-selling albums, including Ministry of Sound’s classic Ibiza 99. She’s also enjoyed great success with Norman Cook and Ashley Slater’s band Freak Power. She’s been signed to MCA/Universal and sung on several tracks charting in the UK Top 40. Kate’s collaborative partners include Judge Jules, Boy George, Tim Westwood, Danny Rampling and Paul Oakenfold


Ian Sillett Head of Songwriting Ian is a graduate of the Leeds College of Music, and LIPA. An award-winning songwriter having been signed to East West Records, Ian has also performed with Sir Paul McCartney, Joan Armatrading, Mark Knopfler, Beverley Knight, and Sugababes. He is a composer and arranger for film company Atlantic Pictures, who have been awarded 22 Palme D’Or nominations. He is also a member of the General Teaching Council and a contributor to BBC introducing on BBC Radio Sussex. Jake Shillingford Head of Music Business Jake Shillingford is the founder of the cult orchestral alternative band My Life Story, with whom he released three successful albums and had six top forty singles. The band collaborated with PJ Proby, Marc Almond, Morrissey, The Wonderstuff and even headlined over Oasis. Jake is one of the first “DIY” music business entrepreneurs, having started his own label in 2002 funded exclusively by investors, benefactors and fans. Andy Maclure Head of Artist Development Andy was the drummer and co-songwriter for 90’s hit band Sleeper, enjoying three UK Top 5 Albums and nine UK Top 40 singles. Andy has also written, recorded and gigged with artists such as Sophie Ellis Bextor, Bernard Butler, Mel C and Matthew Jay. He also runs Punk Rock Karaoke Ltd, the UK’s original live karaoke band with Radio 1 DJ Steve Lamacq. James Shears Head of Live Sound and Tour Management/Production James has had a varied career as a sound engineer, musician and singer/songwriter in the UK and South

Africa. He has been a Product Manager for Soundcraft and won awards at national level for album projects as both a producer/ engineer and as an artist in his own right. His extensive experience as both musician and sound engineer give him a unique ability to understand life at both ends of the microphone cable. Jason Knight Head of Live Performance Jason has played keyboards professionally since the age of 15. Specialising in Hammond and Rhodes, he’s played for a variety of artists including Reef, Kula Shaker, Sam Obernik and Ian Wills. His work as a session player has taken him around the world supporting the likes of Incubus, Travis, Feeder, Smashing Pumpkins, The Charlatans and David Bowie, as well as headlining festivals including V97 and Glastonbury. Michael Bowes Head of Music Business Entrepreneurs Michael is a world-class drummer who has performed with artists including Nelly Furtado, Joss Stone, Tears For Fears, Amerie, Mario, Heather Small (M People), Michelle Gayle, Black Legend, BLOW and Macy Gray. He has performed on many live TV shows including Top of the Pops, MTV, VH1 and The Jerry Springer show. Neill Thew Head of Teaching and Learning Neill is an award-winning teacher who has taught in many universities around the UK and Europe, including Oxford, London, Sussex and Gothenburg. His role as Head of Teaching and Learning is focused on ensuring students receive the best possible learning experience. Neill is also an accomplished writer and editor, and CEO of the Kangaroo Education Consultancy.

Guests and Master Classes From performers, bands and journalists to label executives, A&R reps and booking agents, our strong music connections enable us to host guests across the length and breadth of the industry. BIMM Album Each year, our musicians submit demos to get a track on our very own album. Bands get to record at a top professional studio with pro engineers and producers. The record is then released to the industry and public through our own in-house record label.

Gigs BIMM musicians are heavily involved in gigs all year throughout Brighton and Hove and beyond. We also run our own shows – with gigs at the end of each term for both full bands and for singer/songwriters at top venues in the city.

Remember – its YOUR time We help musicians make the most out of their time at BIMM. Active involvement in the local music scene and daily running of personal musical projects is encouraged alongside course work, revision and exams. This is your time, so get involved in rehearsing and gigging to promoting and writing. BIMM is all about full on musical immersion!

BIMM are partners with the Brighton Film School, working together on a variety of creative projects that bring together filmmakers and musicians.


Industry Partners students at BIMM are supported by many industry links and partnerships. These help us to offer state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, they also assist with industry placements and internships for many of our students. BIMM students and alumni enjoy internships and entry level employment positions with: Sony Music, EMI, Universal Music and Warner Music UK. We also have alumni working at, XL Recordings, Wichita and Ninja Tunes along with a large number of smaller independents. Frequently, work placements turn into paid employment and this year one of our alumni started working with Republic of Music who since their launch have run retail campaigns for such artists as Fleet Foxes, Two Door Cinema Club, Bloc Party, The Black Keys, Tame Impala, Badly Drawn Boy, The Futureheads and Fatboy Slim. On the live music front, BIMM students are out working at venues and festivals across the country with Target Live whose clients include Festival Republic (Reading, Leeds, Latitude) and Bestival. They also work with agents including ITB and The Agency along with finalists for the Live UK Regional Promoter of the Year Award, Lout Promotions. Engaging with music media is promoted both as part of the curriculum and by the line

up of masterclass guests, as a result we have alumni working with the ‘Later...’ team at the BBC, writing for Rocksound Magazine and working at Terrorizer Magazine. BIMM also partners with PR companies Quite Great PR, Anororak PR, Space Promotions and Duff Press where one of our alumni now works on press campaigns for Def Leppard, Slash, Marilyn Manson, Thin Lizzy, RUSH, Velvet Revolver and many more. BIMM alumni are working with some of the best management companies in the business including ie:Music (management for Robbie Williams, Ladyhawke and Duffy), Three Six Zero (Calvin Harris, Deadmau5) and Big Life Management (Scissor Sisters, Charlatans, Badly Drawn Boy). BIMM musicians are invited to audition for all the top labels, producers and management companies in the UK, to perform on X Factor or small tours, glitzy industry events or intimate recording sessions. Further Education Courses You can apply to BIMM for a Further Education course by calling our admissions team direct to request an assessment or by entering your details in the Apply Now section on the BIMM Brighton website. Once we have received your enquiry we will invite you in for an assessment and audition and we will then either make you an offer of a place or suggest what you need to do to develop your skills to the appropriate standard. Performance-Based Courses: Guitar, Bass, Drums, Vocals and Songwriting If you are applying to one of our performance-based courses and are a UKbased student we will expect you to attend BIMM for an audition and assessment.

All BIMM assessments for Performance and Songwriting courses are free of charge and include an hour long introductory presentation that will provide you with valuable information about our courses, the music industry and the ethos, aims and philosophy of BIMM. At your individual assessment we will discuss your personal aspirations and the ways in which we can help you to achieve your goals.

Music Business and Live Sound courses For courses which do not involve a practical performance element an offer will be based upon your qualifications, experience and a successful interview. We recommend that you attend one of our Open Days throughout the year so that you are fully informed about BIMM before you submit your application.


International We are very proud to announce that in March 2012 we were awarded full Highly Trusted Status by the UK Border Agency and are now fully licensed to welcome you to BIMM Brighton. Applying to BIMM, as a non-UK resident, has never been easier. Please get in touch - we would be very happy to discuss all your options personally. English Qualifications You will be required to show evidence of your English language skills to one of the following levels:

How to apply? As an EU or international student you can apply for any full-time BIMM course. The first step is to undertake an assessment. This assessment will determine what level is best suited to your ability. We do understand that some EU and international applicants will not be able to travel to BIMM Brighton or BIMM Bristol for their audition and therefore we can offer an assessment application that can be sent via email. The deposit for your course will need to be paid in full within 21 days of receiving the contract.

Academic Entry Criteria In addition to the above you will also need to meet the academic entry criteria for the course you wish to apply for. You will need to provide us with evidence of your qualifications upon making an application.

How to get a student visa? As an international student you need a visa to study in the UK. In order to obtain a student visa you will need to be issued a Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) number by BIMM. This will be provided once you return a signed copy of your contract offer and have paid your full fees following a successful application. Once you have received your CAS number you will be able to proceed with your Visa application. 41

Scholarships and Bursaries Every year BIMM offers a limited number of scholarships and bursaries to talented and dedicated applicants who are in need of financial assistance. For further information on how to apply, please call 08442 646 666. Or email info@bimm.co.uk . Residents outside the European Union unfortunately do not qualify for UK financial assistance. All applications are subject to deadlines. You must have been offered a place on a course in order to apply for a scholarship.

NEW - PRS for Music Spring board Scholarships for Songwriting and Music Business Diploma level only. PRS for Music are offering five scholarships to students who wish to study on one of BIMM’s new Springboard Diplomas in Brighton. The scholarships are for one year Artist Development courses in Songwriting or for the one year Entrepreneur’s Diploma in Music Business. The purpose of these scholarships is to ensure equality of opportunity for young people, to raise aspirations and educational attainment and improve employment prospects within the music industry.

Springboard Scholarship Diploma level only. BIMM Brighton is dedicated to helping musicians and songwriters to develop their skills and talents and their self confidence while gaining nationally recognised Further and Higher Education qualifications. Our New

Scholarship Fund supports younger entrants who would like to study on our Diploma level programmes. Each scholarship is £1000 towards course fees.

BIMM Scholarships Each academic year BIMM is able to offer a limited number of full or part scholarships to talented and dedicated applicants who are in need of financial assistance. These scholarships are limited to courses where student funding does not cover the full cost of the course. Scholarships are only available for UK residents. To be eligible for a scholarship your household income must be below £40,000 per year. Below is a breakdown of the scholarships you can be considered for: • Household income of £25,000 per year or less — you may be eligible for a FULL scholarship • Household income between £26,000 £40,000 per year — you may be eligible for a PART scholarship

Bursaries EMI Music Sound Foundation has provided BIMM with a bursary of £4,000 for Brighton students and £1,000 for Bristol students. This bursary is only available to UK residents. These bursaries are available to applicants who are in financial hardship. The bursary can be split amongst a number of applicants over the age of 19 who are on a Diploma or PG Cert programme at Brighton, and who are on any level of course at BIMM Bristol. The maximum age for applicants is 25. 43


Accommodation Brighton hosts various possibilities for accommodation including flats, shared houses, bedsits or part-board with a host family. As a university city there is a high demand for student accommodation so we advise you to look as early as possible to find a place to suit your needs.

How to find accommodation If you would like help finding accommodation you can speak to Jackie Phillips – as an independent advisor she can provide a whole host of information on flats/shared houses, bedsits and host houses.
