NOCTURNES I started this body of work in the winter, when the days are shortest and coldest. Working almost entirely during night hours, and walking to and from my studio in Brooklyn at a time when the streets are almost deserted, I felt the sonorous quality of darkness seeping onto the canvases. The type of light and space of the paintings is refractive and shallow, deeply saturated and as intimate as the interior of a gemstone. Rather than creating a sublime interaction with the viewer, I am interested in seducing the viewer through the perceptual object-ness of painting. In this series, abstraction defies the concepts of language and representation. The surfaces constantly draw the viewer’s eye and body to the flickering lushness of decorative materials. Using media such as glitter, powdered glass, metal leaf, and interference pigments, this work evokes an idea of resonant and reflective space. The paintings become meditative artifacts of an almost geological time, and despite their monumental scale they function concretely as objects and surfaces for material experimentation. Night ultimately becomes a metaphor for paint itself- a raw earth that is alchemically transmuted into space and experience. Rosalind Tallmadge, February 2016
