Fei Liu New York School of Interior Design Anticipated Graduation: May, 2018
Statement “If you're doing your best, you won't have any time to worry about failure.” —H. Jackson Brown, Jr. Since the beginning of high school, I have dreamed of becoming an interior designer. However, it was my undergraduate studies in the fine arts (oiling painting) that truly captured my imagination and passion for art and interior design. Through my undergraduate studies, I not only expanded my knowledge of art history, theory and styles, but also developed many skills, including oil painting, carpentry, sculpture, sketching, Gouache, and fine brushwork, which now shape the way I think and work. My favorite course was color theory, which helped me develop a habit of analyzing color compositions every time I entered a new space. Besides the required courses, I chose design courses as well, such as AUTO CAD, 3D-MAX, Photoshop. In my spare time, I voraciously devoured books on design, which led me to realize that I wanted to devote my life to interior design. To that end, I enrolled in design courses, such as color psychology, Texturology, and lighting. It was my interest and passion that first lead me to the field of interior design; however, it was my persistence that led me to develop expertise. With the passion in interior design burning in my hear t, I joined a professional interior design and architect company in Shanghai. As a young man with limited hands-on experience in interior design, I advanced to become a team leader of construction drawing within one and a half years. In this position, I successfully executed over 10 major projects in collaboration with my colleagues, including the model home designs for Vanke China and the four-star Puyuan Hotel in Zhejiang. The seed of desire to study interior design in the U.S. was planted in my heart during my time working in Kokai Studios. It was very challenging at first, as I had never received systematic training in interior design. However, I was not terrified, instead I exerted extra effort to fulfil my role as an interior designer, and to master the skills of concept design and sketching. Finally, my persistence and creativity earned the trust and respect of my colleagues and supervisors. As a result, I was invited to collaborate with the director of Kokai Studios to complete exciting projects in Shenzhen, Shenyang, Guizhou and Hong Kong. In the design of the Hotel Penta, for example, I learned the skill of managing the construction drawing’s time node. For my master’s studies, I focus my studies on interior design. At the same time, I want to grow as a designer, in both depth and breadth. In summer and after school, I was working for Elkus Manfredi Architects and Wilson Associates. In schhool and companies, I learned to develop the concepts. With its stimulating academic atmosphere with multiple hands-on, realworld training opportunities, such as the Experiential Learning course, this program surely benefits my development toward an advanced interior design career. During working, I worked with several top designers as well as the principal of interiors, and participated in team meetings and client presentations. I collaborated on a range of tasks from CAD, Revit, SketchUp, InDesign, Photoshop, client presentations, furniture and material selections, and furniture specifications. I am confident that my strong theoretical background in design, extensive realworld work experience, cross-cultural insights and interpersonal communication skills would allow me to make a meaningful contribution to your company. Moreover, I have no doubt that my passion, persistence and strong sense of responsibility, which I have cultivated since the age of seven, will ensure my ability to accomplish and succeed in your company.

PROGRAM: Museum LOCATION: Brooklyn. NY AREA: 52,000 Sqft STATUS: Idea, May. 2017 Designer: Fei Liu Design Concept: My design is inspired by the principle that museum interior architecture should be appropriate to the art it contains. This concept is expressed in the lobby and the incorporation of water on the second floor. As the waves wash on the shore, they emulate the magnificent curved landform of DUMBO. This moment expresses the same energy the artists used to create the masterpiece of BMAD. Responsibility: Concept drawing (including layout, elevation,) and rendering. Design Inspiration: The curved lines vary in meaning. For example, soft, shallow curves suggest comfort, safety, familiarity and relaxation. They recall the curves of the human body, and therefore have a pleasing, sensual quality. Also, many of the collections at BMAD were curved in form to express their emotions. There works include the EYE OF DESIGN, FRANCOISE GROSSEN SELECTS, VOULKOS and PLAY WITH FIRE. Using the curved form, all of these pieces reflect different styles and develop a number of feelings in the viewer such as sobriety and playfulness. Some exhibitions provide luminous or mysterious experiences, which can inspire people’s curiosity and creativity. When people enter the building, their experience draws on all of their senses. Their vision, sound, smell and tactility are affected by the curved form, space, light, surfaces, lines and colors, which will inspire people to continue to come back BMAD. Water Display 3D View

Nature Inspiration
Design Concept: Du to the long winter in Montreal, customers crave warmth. My design could address this need. In the African Savanna, lions roam at dusk, leopards leap, and buffalos groan. The Savannah is a place so far yet so near. Because the hotel transport vistors to this environment. The Savanna Boutique Hotel brings the African wildlife to the interior, where customers can not only enjoy nature but can also be educated about the importance of environmental preservation in this region. In the Savanna Boutique hotel, every surface is organic. Unity, colour and rough texture heighten the senses and transport guests on a visual journey throughout their stay. This project consists of both public and private space design, including the main lobby, check-in/concierge, luggage room, storage, administrative and support, elevators, toilets, restaurant/bar. Design Concept: Egg shape: Egg represents life, safe, isolation and self-growth. We use egg shape want to show when people live in Micro house, they became isolation with exterior and start to interact with themselves. Micro view to see self: Micro house is designed for single professional people. When they leave their home, they need to interact and communicate with people. When they come back to home, they are alone with themselves. Home is not only a space for living, but also is a place to react to themselves mind. Micro house has three levels. Second floor is for id, which incorporates human’s base desire, sleep and go to restroom. First floor is for ego, which meets another human’s base desire, eating and communication to exterior world. Basement floor is for superego, which face people spiritual level needs, such as reading and meditation. Sigmund Freud: the id is the set of uncoordinated instinctual trends; the super-ego plays the critical and moralizing role; and the ego is the organized, realistic part that mediates between the desires of the id and the superego. The superego can stop one from doing certain things that one's id may want to do.
