objective

RIBA Part 1 | Stage 3 architectural graduate from Newcastle University | Seeking placement as an architectural assistant | Available September 2013 - September 2014.

personal profile

I am highly motivated and enthusiastic about the opportunity to work within a innovative and lively practice during my placement year. Studies in both architecture and art at degree level have given me a wide range of complimentary skills; I am now eager to apply these to a position within a professional environment. I have a comprehensive set of skills ranging from concept development and explorative model making to technical detailing and high quality visualisations. Whilst I enjoy working in collaboration with others, I am also highly motivated to work independently. My interests within architecture and its design process are concerned with responding to both social and topographical context, the application of architectural theory and the manipulation of materials and light to create evocative experiential qualities.

Institute of Solitude

Augmented Horizon

The building is intended to act as both a research institute and sanatarium. The large constructed form would act as a newly formed landscape in which up to four residents could live. The intention of the building is to act as a desolate resort, to which residents would come to separate themselves from society, acting similarly to an artist or writers residency.

2.

The form of the building was arrived at through a series of tests and processes that explored aspects of scale, site context and spatial quality. Situated on the old Steetly Magnesite Works in Hartlepool, the architecture is intended to reflect such processes whilst also creating a new reference point upon a featureless post-industrial landscape. 02

The building provides spaces that are non-defined, allowing the residents to inhabit large spaces in the way they choose. Provisions are provided in two forms; private and communal, allowing the residents to choose either how social or secluded their actions are. Their behavioural patterns would be monitored by on-site staff who would assess and research the psychological effects that living in seclusion has on the inhabitants.

Factory of Synergies

Can Ricart Redevelopment

02 | Factory of Synergies

Year: 2012 Location: Barcelona, Spain Building Type: Multi- Use Facility Project Tutors: Montse Ferres Daniel Mallo

The concept for this design was to utilise the existing character of the site as much as possible and as such, re-use as much of the building fabric available. On a site-wide scale, the way in which this was proposed was to redistribute sections of the factory walls around the site based on a mathematical pattern derived from the dimensions of the site. This would not only create new openings into the buildings, but also create new outdoor spaces.

1.

The internals of the buildings would retain as much character of the existing factory as possible, whilst inserting a contemporary steel structure into the factory shell. The new intervention would provide a flexible and multi- purpose facility, allowing artisans and small-scale businesses to utilise the spaces.

2.

05

The redistributed walls would act to highlight the different layers of the building’s history through the build-up of textures and scarring present on the factories walls. As such, each section of wall can be read as separate monuments of the site’s history, presenting what has been left over from the previous occupants of the building. The movement of the walls would create traces on the paving, the pattern of which can be seen on the image to the right. These traces are intended to become a new layer of history on the site, adding to the existing layers of history already present.

The intention for this design was to create an intervention that allowed nature and wildlife to be incorporated into the building fabric itself. The concept was to create spaces that functioned on three separate levels, interacting with different wildlife types as the user moved through the building. The form of the building would highlight the change in levels that existed on the site, moving from ground up to tree canopy level.

Ground animals may inhabit the gaps inherent in the structure, whilst mid-canopy animals, such as insects, could live within soil sandwiched between the timber elements. The aim is for the user to experience a range of different wildlife types as they move through the building. 08

Civic Center(ed)

A Literary Coop

2.

04 | Civic Center(ed)

Year: 2012 Location: Tynemouth, UK Building Type: A Literary Coop / Library Project Tutors: Simon Hacker

The approach to this design was to attempt to utilise the history of Tynemouth by referencing the two main aspects of the town; Tynemouth Priory and Tynemouth Station. This was achieved by creating a conceptual convergence on the site which acted as a catalyst for the form of the building. The facility is made up of two distinct elements, both materially and functionally, that are connected via a vertical circulation element. The use of the building is to provide a library for the residents of Tynemouth, whilst also allowing a place to catalogue, archive and research local history. The aim was to encourage different generations of the town to both learn from and teach each other about the urban and cultural fabric of Tynemouth.
