Project Brief

Design a consumer sound system that demonstrates a unique user experience and incorporates modern technology.

Portable Sound

The Market The portable sound system market is highly saturated with products from several companies.

Problem Opportunity

Portable sound systems are generally underpowered for audiences in the home.

How might we combine the portable and home listening experiences?

Storyboard

You are enjoying your day at the beach.

Icon is playing your favorite song by your side.

All of a sudden, your bad friend calls.

Your bad friend just invited 50 people to your house.

You rush back to your house.

Your friends ask where the party music is.

You connect Icon to its dock speaker.

Loud, beautiful music causes everyone to dance ridiculously.

Color, Material, Finish Inspiration - Contemporary, minimalist furniture with drastic CMF change

Setting - A clean, contemporary home, warm, pale earth tones

Model Fixed -1/16 sheet aluminum -Ashwood Veneer -Magnets -Lasercut Acrylic -Pine Wood

Portable -PVC Pipe -3D Printed Nylon -Lasercut Veneer -Ball Bearing -Wool Fabric

Portable Playing Icon is a mobile player for the on-the-go music enthusiast. A massive, cloud-based library in a device no bigger than a can.

Wireless Icon docks to its shelf speaker wirelessly. From there, it charges and streams music as a louder, full range sound system.

Digital & Analog Icon features digital commands for play, pause, and skip as well as analog volume adjustment. This not only saves space on the UI, but incorporates the classic feel of a volume dial.

Middle Income Couple in San Francisco

$73k/Year ~

Common Brewers -Expensive -Fragile -Stationary -Bulky Pour Over

Problem Opportunity

French Press

Middle-Income urban couples have neither the time or the money for expensive, elaborate brewers. How might we uphold the beauty and ritual of quality coffee while reducing cost, size, and material use?
