ST. PETERSBURG PIER LIGHTHOUSE TOWER ADVANCED DESIGN B PROFESSOR GUNDERSEN
“THERE IS ALWAYS A LIGHTHOUSE, THERE IS ALWAYS A CITY, THERE IS ALWAYS A MAN.” -ELIZABETH DEWITT DRAWN BY THE NOTION OF A LIGHTHOUSE, A VERTICAL BEACON THAT DRAWS ATTENTION TO ITSELF, THIS PROJECT AIMS TO ATTRACT PEOPLE OF ST PETE BACK TO THE PIER. THE LIGHTHOUSE TOWER FOLDS AWAY AS IT ASCENDS TO REVEAL THE MAIN PROGRAM SPACES IN THE TOWER. THE PROGRAM INCLUDES ROOF GARDENS, HOTEL SPACES, RESTAURANTS/ HOTEL AMENITIES, AND A MARITIME MUSEUM. THE BASE OF THE TOWER OPENS INTO A GRAND OPEN-AIR FORUM. A WIDE CANOPY SPRAWLSOVER THE PIER TO ESTABLISH AN INVITING PROMENADE FOR THE PIER AND THE TOWER.

THE FORUM BRIDGES THE CANOPY PROMENADE OF THE PIER WITH THE BASE OF THE TOWER. THE FORUM IS COVERED BY A HIGHER CANOPY WITH MEZONENE FLOORS. VENDORS, OUTDOOR CAFES, AND ANY OTHER TYPE OF COMMUNITY GATHERING CAN HAPPEN HERE. THIS WILL DRAW PEOPLE BACK TO THE PIER AND MAKE THE SPACE A DESTINATION FOR THE CITY. IN ADDITION, THE FORUM CONNECTS TO AN OUTDOOR WET MARITIME EXHIBIT FOR THE MARITIME MUSEUM IN THE TOWER. THE RICH HISTORY OF ST PETE AS A PORT AND THE PIER AS A SITE FOR BOATS MAKES A MARITIME MUSEUM A GREAT ADDITION FOR THE CITY.

THE LIGHTHOUSE TOWER IS BEST CAPTURED AT NIGHT WITH LIGHT FUNNELING UP INTO IT. THE ILLUMINATED SCORED AND FROSTED PLEXI COME ALIVE WITH THE LIGHT. THE LIT UP SCORING ON THE PLEXI EMPHASIZES THE SCALE OF FLOOR HEIGHTS THROUGHTOUT THE TOWER. THE OUTER FRAME OF THE TOWER IS FROSTED TO ILLUSTRATE THE HOTEL SPACES THAT WRAP AROUND THE CORE OF THE TOWER. THE OPAQUE FROSTING ADDS LAYERS THAT FURTHER DRIVE THE NOTION OF WRAPPING AROUND THE CORE. THE FROSTED PLEXI BASE DEMONSTRATES WHAT PART OF THE PIER IS THE TOWER’S SITE. THE VERTICAL CIRCULATION SHINES THROUGH THE OUTER LAYERS OF PLEXI TO REVEAL ITSELF. STRUCTURE IS ADDED TO PROVIDE A FRAME TO SUPPORT THE CANOPIES AND THE TOWER ITSELF. THE ESSENCE OF THE TOWER AS A VERTICAL BEACON ARE EXEMPLIFIED EVEN AT DIFFERENT VIEWING ANGLES.

SARASOTA LIVE/WORK/PLAY COMMUNITY ADVANCED DESIGN A PROFESSOR HAFLANTS
THE UNIION OF THE SPATIAL PROGRAMS OF HOUSING, COMMUNITY, AND RETAIL ARE EXPLORED IN MY DESIGN. THE DENSITY OF SARASOTA ENCOURAGES THE MERGING OF ALL THESE PROGRAMTIC TYPES INTO ONE SCHEME. MY DESIGN CELEBRATES THIS BY ORGANIZING THE SPATIAL PROGRAMS ACCORDING TO THE NEEDS OF THE OCCUPANTS. RETAIL IS PLACED ON THE GROUND FLOOR NEXT TO THE STREET FOR ACCESS BY PASSING PEDESTRIANS WHILE THE LIVING UNITS ARE PERCHED ABOVE FOR SECURITY AND PRIVACY. AT THE SAME TIME, THE COMMUNAL SPACES ARE SPACED EVENLY THROUGHOUT TO ENHANCE THE LIVES OF THE RESIDENTS. THE PROGRAM IS THEN BROKEN UP AGAIN INTO THREE SEPERATE BUILDINGS TO PROVIDE AN COMMUNAL PLAZA INSIDE THE PROPERY AND PATHWAYS THROUGH TO ACCESS THEM. THE PROJECT BECOMES A MICRO CITY WITH PRIVATE, PUBLIC, AND COMMERCIAL SPACES NEEDED TO MAINTAIN THE COMMUNITY.

1 HOUSING UNIT BLOCK
THE HOUSING UNITS IS DIVIDED INTO THREE SIZES OF 700 SQUARE FEET, 700-1200 SQUARE FEET, AND ABOVE 1200 SQUARE FEET. ALL THREE TYPES ARE MODULATED TO ALLOW STACKING CONFIGURATIONS. I DEVELOPED THE MODULATION THROUGH STACKING OF WOODEN BLOCKS. WHEN ALL ARE COMBINED, THE STACK REPRESENTS A SEGMENT OF HOUSING UNITS ABOVE AND RETAIL SPACES BELOW.

THE HOUSING UNITS ARE ARRANGED AROUND A WIDE DOUBLE CORRIDOR TO ALLOW FOR MAXIMIZING THE NUMBER OF UNITS PER FLOOR AND USING A PORTION AS AN EXTENSION OF THE UNIT INTO THE CORRIDOR FOR USE BY THE OWNER. THIS ALSO ALLOWS THE CORRIDOR TO BECOME OPEN-AIR FOR NATURAL LIGHT TO REACH THE LOWER FLOORS AND PRIVACY OF THE UNIT AWAY FROM THE MAIN CIRCULATION. THE FACADE IS BROKEN UP BY BALCONIES AND RELIEF COMPONENTS TO EMPHASIZE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF LIVING UNITS.

THE MODULATION OF EACH UNIT ALLOW FOR SIMPLIFYING THE DESIGN OF EACH LIVING UNIT INTO THE THREE TYPES THAT WERE ALREADY DESIGNED. THIS MEANS THAT DETAILING A UNIT WITH FURNITURE BECOMES A STANDARD FOR ALL THE SAME TYPE OF UNIT IN THE PROJECT. THE LARGEST AND SECOND LARGEST UNITS INCLUDE A SECOND FLOOR AND A LARGE BALCONY. THE COMMUNAL SPACES ARE BASED IN THE SAME MODULATION FOR PLACING INTO THE ESTABLISHED GRID OF UNITS. THE COMMUNAL SPACE CONNECTS BACK INTO THE DOUBLE LOADED CORRIDOR TO INCREASE THE SQUARE FOOTAGE AND ACT AS A LINK BACK TO THE COMMUNITY IN THE BUILDING.

MEANINGFUL, BEAUTIFUL, USEFUL THE CARE OF MAKING PROFESSOR COOKE
A GIFT FOR SOMEONE IMPORTANT TO THE GIVER EMBOIDES MEANING, BEAUTY, AND USEFULENSS. MY DESIGN FOCUSED ON A BENT WOOD BED TABLE FOR MY FATHER, LUIS LEON. MY FATHER WAS THE ONE WHO FED ME AND TOOK CARE OF ME WHEN I GREW UP. NOW THAT MY FATHER IS OLDER, I BRING FOOD HOME TO HIM. MY RECIPROCATION OF SERVICE LEAD ME TO DESIGN A TABLE THAT MY FATHER COULD USE WHEN IM NOT HOME. LIKE MY FATHER, THE TABLE IS HUMBLE IN ITS MINIMAL AND PRACTICALITY IN AESTHETICS AND SERVICE. AT THE SAME TIME, THE TABLE REFLECTS MYSELF INTHE PROCESS OF ITS CREATION. THE TABLE’’S FORM AND STRENGTH COMES FROM THE LAMINATION OF WOOD OVER A FORMWORK LIKE I WAS RAISED BY THE FRAME OF MY FATHER. THEREFORE, A PART OF ME PROVIDES THE SUPPORT FOR MY FATHER TO DEPEND UPON. BENT WOOD BED TABLE INITIAL SKETCH

DENVER SCHOOL OF ART BRIDGING THE GAP ADVANCED DESIGN A PROFESSOR HAFLANTS
THE GAP BETWEEN TWO MASSES ALLOW THE BRIDGING OF BOTH BY A COMMON SPACE. THIS PROJECT DEALS WITH DESIGNING AN ART SCHOOL THAT INCLUDES SPACES FOR THE STUDENTS AS WELL AS FOR THE TEACHERS. THESE SPACES WERE ORGANIZED INTO TWO SEPARATE BUILDINGS OR MASSES BASED ON THE TWO OCCUPANTS. THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE TWO IS CREATED BYA GLASS BRIDGE. THE BRIDGE ACTS AS THE MAIN CIRCULATION HORIZONTALLY AND VERTICALLY THROUGH THE PROJECT. AT THE SAME TIME, THE BRIDGE HOUSES THE JURY SPACES WHERE THE STUDENT AND TEACHER COME TOGETHER AS EQUALS.

THE INSPIRATION OF THE ART SCHOOL WAS BASED ON A WORK OF ART AT THE DENVER MUSEUM. THE ARTWORK DEPICTS KING KONG AND GODZILLA HOLDING HANDS. THIS NOTION OF TWO UNIQUE YET SIMILAR MASSES CAN COME TOGETHER THROUGH A HANDSHAKE. THIS CONNECTION BECOMES THE DRIVING FORCE OF MY DESIGN. THE MATERIALITY OF CONCRETE, STEEL/GLASS, AND BRICK FURTHER EMPHASIZES THE CONNECTION OF TWO STEREOTOMIC MASSES AND THE LIGHT TECTONIC BRIDGE. THE GLASS BRIDGE ALLOW FOR GLASS JURY ROOM SPACES THAT WILL ALLOW AMPLE LIGHT FOR PRESENTATION AND DRAW THE INTREST OF PEDESTRIANS WALKING NEAR TO SEE.

THE SEPARATION OF BOTH BUILDINGS ALLOW FOR THE INCLUSION OF A PLAZA INFRONT OF THE SITE AND A MORE RECLUSIVE SUNKEN PLAZA IN THE REAR. THIS CORRELATION OF BOTH PLAZA RELATE BACK TO THE NOTION OF THE TWO BUILDINGS AND THE BRIDGE CONNECTION. IN ADDITION THE BRIDGE ALLOW FOR GLASS ATRIUMS TO ATTACH TO EACH BUILDING. THIS VARIATION INCREASES THE PLAY OF SPACES AND FLOORS WHICH DRAW THE INHABITANTS BACK TO THE GLASS BRIDGE AND THE IMPORTANT JURY SPACES. THE FIFTH FLOOR INCLUDES AN ANNEX FOR THE MUSEUM OF DENVER. THE GALLERIES OF THE MUSEUM ANNEX IS ORGANIZED IN THE SAME WAY THE BUILDINGS ARE. THE STUDENT BUILDING HOUSES THE 2-D WORKS OF ART WHILE THE TEACHER BUILDING HOLDS THE SCULPTURES.

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL TOWER HEADQUARTERS ADVANCED DESIGN B PROFESSOR GUNDERSEN
THE PERFORMANCE OF A CIRQUE DU SOLEIL SHOW IS THE RESULT OF AN ASCENDING PROCESS THAT LEADS TO IT. THIS PROCESS IS THE FOCUS OF MY TOWER DESIGN. THE RESEARCH& DEVELOPMENT SPACES ARE CARVED INTO THE GROUND AND ACTS AS THE BASE OF THE TOWER. FROM THERE THE TOWER INCLUDES THE WORKSHOPS AND THE DANCE& ACROBATIC TRAINING SPACES. CONNECTING EACH PRGOGRAMTIC SPACE LIES A COMMUNAL SPACE FOR THE OCCUPANTS. THE OUTER LAYERS OF THE TOWER INCLUDE RESIDENTIAL AND OFFICE SPACES. AT THE CROWN, A CANTILEVERED FLOATING PERFORMANCE THEATER FOR THE PERFORMERS AND THE ATTENDING GUEST. THE THEATER IS THE JEWEL AND BEACON FOR THE TOWER. CHICAGO TOWER INITIAL DRAFT MODEL

THE INITIAL PROCESS OF THE DESIGN BEGAN WITH EXTENSIVE GRAPHICAL SECTION STUDIES OF THE SPACES INSIDE AND THE OVERALL GESTURE OF THE CIRQUE DU SOLEIL TOWER. MY DESIGN FOCUSED ON THE CANTILEVERED PERFORMANCE THEATER AT THE TOP OF THE TOWER ALONG WITH THE OTHER TYPES OF VERTICAL SPACES THROUGHOUT THE TOWER. THE MAIN PROGRAM SPACES ARE GIVEN UNIQUE VERTICAL HEIGHTS AND FLOOR INTERACTIONS FOR THE FACILIITATION OF THE PROGRAM. IN ADDITION, THE TOWER HAS A CONTINUOUS ATRIUM TO THE BASE OF THE PERFORMANCE THEATER. THE BASE OF THE TOWER TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THE SITE WITH EMBEDDING INTO THE GROUND AND CREATING A PLAZA THAT IS CARVED AWAY FOR VIEWING OF THE RESEARCH/ DEVELOPMENT SPACE THAT IS THE START OF THE CIRQUE DU SOLEIL SHOW PROCESS. ILLUMINATED NIGHT SHOTS OF THE CIRQUE DU SOLEIL TOWER HELP REVEAL THE DETAILS OF THE MODEL. THIS IS ACHIEVED THROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF FROSTING, SCORING, AND STICKYBACKING THE PLEXI COMPONENTS. THE LIT UP SCORING ON THE PLEXI EMPHASIZES THE FLOOR HEIGHTS THROUGHTOUT THE TOWER. THIS ALONG WITH THE FIGURES GIVES A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE SCALE OF THE OVERALL TOWER AND THE FLOOR HEIGHT. THE OUTER FRAME OF THE TOWER IS FROSTED TO CREATE OPAQUE PANELS ON THE TOWER. THIS ILLUSTRATE THE RESIDENTIAL AND OFFICE SPACES THAT FILL IN THE VOIDS OF THE MAIN PROGRAMATIC SPACES. THE PLEXI BASE HAS ITS PAPER BACK TO DRIVE THE NOTION OF IT AS THE SITE BASE OF THE TOWER. STRUCTURE IS ADDED TO PROVIDE A FRAME TO SUPPORT THE PROGRAMATIC SPACES AND THE TOWER CORE ITSELF. THE RESEARCH& DEVELOPMENT SPACES ALONG WITH THE WORKSHOP SPACES ARE SHOWN WITH THE LIGHT SOURCE.

HISTORICAL PALIMPSESTS/ PHANTOM TRACES MAPPING OF WEEDON ISLAND FLORIDA LANDSCAPE SEMINAR PROFESSOR SANDERS
LIFE LEAVES OVERLAPPING REMNANTS OF EXISTENCE ON A PLACE. THE IDENTITY OF A PLACE IS CREATED BY THESE PHANTOM TRACES. LOCATED BETWEEN GANDY BOULEVARD AND ST PETERSBURG, THIS ISLAND IS A NATURE AND CULTURAL PRESERVE FOR PINELLAS COUNTY. INITIALLY, I REALIZED THAT ITS INDIGENOUS LANDSCAPE WAS THE TABULA RASA FROM WHICH HISTORY WOULD OVERLAY ON TOP OF EACH OTHER TO FORM THE ISLAND AS A WHOLE. THAT LED TO THE CREATION OF MAPS IN THE SAME MANOR WITH THE JUXTAPOSITION OF DIFFERENT HISTORICAL TIMES WITH ONE ANOTHER. SUCH HISTORICAL ACCOUNTS INCLUDE INDIAN’S BURIAL MOUNDS, THE WEEDON FAMILY, THE BOOTLEGGING, A MOVIE STUDIO, AN AIRPORT, MOSQUITO DITCHES, THE POWER PLANT, THE ELEVATED WALKWAYS, AND THE KYAK TRAILS.

SOFT URBANISM/ SCATTERED PODIUM 8 CITY BLOCKS ANCHORED IN THE OLD STEPPPED STREETS OF HONG KONG ADVANCED DESIGN C PROFESSOR SANDERS
CONTRARY TO HOW SACRED SPACES ARE SET APART FROM THE SECULAR IN WESTERN CULTURE. HONG KONG BREAKS THE RULES WITH THE JUXTAPOSITION OF BOTH IN THE URBAN FABRIC. THE EPHEMERAL SLOTS OF THE STREET SHRINE AND TEMPLE IN THE CITY CONTEXT MARK THE DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE PEOPLE AND THE SPIRITUAL WORLD. THESE MICRO TRANSITORY FEATURES BECOME THE PERMANENT ANCHORS OF THE INHABITANT’S DAILY LIFE AND ENDURANCE OF THE VITALITY OF THE CITIES’ OLDER URBAN STRUCTURE. SUCH VIGOR IS NOT PRESENT IN THE NEWER PODIUMS IN THE CITY THAT DESTROY THE STREET SHRINE AND THUS LOSE THE CULTURE OF IT. SHRINE CONSTRUCT ARMATURE DRAFT MODEL PEEL STREET SHRINE CONSTRUCT

THE EPHEMERAL SHRINE CONSTRUCTS ARE CONCEIVED BY THE SHRINE CONSTRUCT GRAPHIC. THE VOIDED SPACE CREATES THE STACKED PLEXI COMPONENT. THIS VOID NOTCH CREATES AN ABSTRACT TOWER AND PODIUM THAT CONNECT INTO THE SHRINE CONSTRUCT ARMATURE. THE ARMATURE IS CREATED BY THE ADJOINING SHRINES IN THE GRAPHIC TO MAKE AN ABSTRACTED HONG KONG CONTEXT. LIKE THE SHRINE CONSTRUCTS, THE ARMATURE CAN BE RE-ORIENTED VERTICALLY TO BECOME AN TOWER OF ITS OWN. THIS ABSTRACT TOWER ALLOWS FOR ADJOINING NEW CONSTRUCTS IN THE VOIDS OF LEFT BY THE SHRINE CONSTRUCTS.

THE SECOND COMPONENT OF THE PROJECT WAS THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE HONG KONG SHRINE STUDY INTO CREATING A PODIUM AND RESIDENTIAL TOWERS FOR A SITE CHOSEN IN HONG KONG. MY SITE IS INBETWEEN THE CENTRAL AND WESTERN DISTRICT OF HONG KONG. THE OLDER URBAN FABRIC, THE CONCENTRATION OF STREET SHRINES AND TEMPLES, AND THE STEPPED GROUND WERE THE MAIN URBAN CHARACTERISTICS THAT TIED TO MY INITIAL STUDY. LIKE THE NATURE OF THE STREET SHRINE THAT ATTACHES TO THE POCHE OF THE CITY FABRIC ON A MICRO SCALE, MY DESIGN WILL TAKE KEY CITY BLOCKS TO MAKE SEVEN PODIUM AND TOWER. RATHER THAN THE DESTRUCTION OF A LARGE CHUNK OF THE CITY WITH A PODIUM PROJECT, MY DESIGN WILL SCATTER THE PODIUM. EACH PODIUM WILL CONNECT AND ANCHOR TO THE CONTEXT TO PRESERVE THE RICH FABRIC OF THE CITIES CONTEXT. THIS MAKES THE PODIUM INTEGRAL TO ITS CONTEXT LIKE THE STREET SHRINE. EACH PODIUM CONTAINS DIFFERENT PROGRAM SUCH AS RETAIL, ENTERTAINMENT, LIBRARIES, MUSEUMS, ROOF TOP GARDENS, CAR GARAGE, TAXI STAND AND BUS STATION STOP.

THE SKIN OF EACH TOWER IS BASED ON A GRAPHIC OF A SHRINE OR TEMPLE THAT THE TOWER IS PLACED NEXT TO. THIS ALLOWS FOR THE TOWER AND PODIUM TO RELATE BACK TO THE INITIAL STUDY OF THE SHRINES IN HONG KONG. THUS THE TOWERS BECOME THE NEW EPHEMERAL SHRINE CONSTRUCTS THAT ARE PLACED IN THE ACTUAL HONG KONG CONTEXT. THIS UNITES THE TOWERS INTO A COHESIVE DISPERSED PROJECT OVER THE DISTANCE OF CENTRAL AND WESTERN DISTRICTS OF HONG KONG.

EACH PODIUM IS SECURED INTO THE STEPPED GROUND OF THE SITE. THIS ALLOWS FOR THE DESIGN OF VARIOUS VERTICAL SPACES FROM THE REACTING FLOOR PLATES. THIS ENHANCES THE TYPES OF SPACES AND PROGRAM WITHIN THE PODIUM. AT THE SAME TIME THE PODIUMS CONNECT TO ITS SURROUNDING CONTEXT TO LINK THE CONTEXT TO THE PODIUM. THUS, SECURING THE CITIES’ FABRIC TO THE PROJECT. THIS WAS DEVELOPED THROUGH SECTION AND RENDERINGS.
