WTF!?!?

Jeremy “The Conservative” Faison

A

by Lucas Witherspoon

s gay people, we’re (sadly) used to pretty outrageous oppositional fodder coming our way. Fortunately, most of us eventually mature enough to learn to either sensibly combat it or just ignore it altogether. Every now and then, though, someone says something that is so steeply based in ignorance and insensitivity that you can’t believe you’re actually hearing it coming from another human being. Enter Republican Representative Jeremy “The Conservative” Faison (his self-endowed nickname) of Tennessee, a married father of four, and attendee of Clearwater Christian College and Northland Baptist Bible College. During a House debate concerning a cyberbullying bill, he said: “We can’t continue to legislate everything. We’ve had some horrible things happen in America and in our state, and there’s children that have actually committed suicide, but I will submit to you today that they did not commit suicide because of somebody bullying them. They committed suicide because they were not instilled the proper principles of where their self-esteem came from at home.” In his comments, Faison was alluding to two teenagers who had recently committed suicide after extensive anti-gay bullying, both of which received massive statewide news coverage and subsequent urging by gay rights groups to toughen the state’s bullying laws. Let’s be clear: these people did not kill themselves because they “were not instilled the proper principles of where their self-esteem came from,” they killed themselves because their bullies were being allowed to ruthlessly bully them with no real penalization. Not only is suggesting the fact they lacked decent morals an insult to the now-deceased teenagers themselves, but also to their families. The lack of sensitivity and care behind such comments suggests this was hardly just an “oops” moment, but speaks to his deeper thought process about 8 | davidatlanta

gay people. Forget the fact that both of these people who killed themselves happened to be gay, they were teenagers, and more importantly, human beings. Yet here is an elected official who is insinuating that is was actually their fault, as well as their parents, that they committed suicide. How anyone’s mental state could be so depraved—especially while implying that two innocent, dead teenagers were themselves nefarious—is literally incomprehensible to me. Faison says that “we can’t legislate everything,” which is true, yet it wasn’t long ago that he was part of a group of politicians in the state who were trying to keep any mention of the word “gay” out of Tennessee schools. What he really meant is that we can’t legislate everything unless it pertains to gay people, whose personal lives do not directly affect me, but whom I still choose to discriminate against because it makes me feel more secure in my pseudo-masculinity and heterosexuality. Naturally, once media outlets started picking up on the comments, Faison quickly issued an apology: “After reviewing my comments on the House Floor today, I regret what was a poor choice of words. My true intent was to protect children from becoming criminals. Suicide has touched my family, and I would never want a parent or family member to feel they were responsible for such an unimaginable tragedy.” So now not only do we know that Faison himself is a father, but that suicide has also apparently “touched [his] family”; regardless, he talks about suicide with the knowledge a kindergartener would have about the stock market. It’s like adding insult to injury, only in this case it’s adding confoundedness to bewilderment. During his initial comments, he went on to say, “There’s people in this room right here who, at one time in their life, were a bully. But you didn’t grow up to be a bad person.” That may be true of some, but there’s clearly at least one bully left in the room.

Men Seeking Men

Titt for Tatts

E

by Tristan Timothy

very now and then my boyfriend likes to completely overhaul his appearance. Sometimes playing leather daddy for a night, or a twinky blonde for a summer, the looks and costumes go on and on. His most recent transformation however might be a little more permanent than I’m comfortable with. He’s not an M2F so let’s just get that out there, this has to do with tattoos. Tattoos can be so hot on some guys and horribly shameful on others. The right tattoo can say “I’m cultured” or “I’m a bad boy” or even “Watch out! I may be a potential devil worshipper.” But like good intentions, bad tattoos can pave a road to hell. I myself have no tattoos. I’ve toyed with the idea of getting them and have been with guys who’ve had them, but part of me just knows that I cant back up what a tattoo can signify. The guy with the sleeve tattoos never loses in a bar fight, he doesn’t care about how many cigarettes he smoked the night before or question if he should order another round of a Jack Daniels shots. As much as I would like to be that guy, I couldn’t be him all the time. My hesitation with tattoos on a partner comes from a few bad experiences. First off, it’s hard not to judge someone with a bad tattoo. The fact that they sat through hours of pain and actually paid money to get a Chinese symbol nobody can read, or some obscure cartoon character from the 90’s, it’s embarrassing. It’s like a constant reminder

12 | davidatlanta

Gay Dating in the City that this person might not be the best at thinking ahead. The worst experience had to have been during some bad tattoo sex. It was outside in a park, and we were lit by the light of the moon. I was younger and more carefree about bending strangers over in a park. In the middle of the act I pulled up his shirt only to reveal…a giant effing wizard…tattooed…across his whole back. At first I thought I could be into it. Like I had been thrown into some hardcore leather dom scene, but then, I couldn’t stop staring. What was the wizard holding? Oh, I see it’s a staff made out of a snake…and what’s he pointing at…? Is he pointing at me? No, I see, he’s summoning ravens from this guys shoulder. Ugh, that was it. I had lost it. I could not get off while staring Gandalf the Grey in the face. It was just too much. So while I remain open to the idea of my boyfriend getting a half sleeve, or full sleeve or whatever he wants. I will be chaperoning the experience, just to make sure I don’t have to stare at wizards, or Hobbits, or (knowing my boyfriend) Sarah Michelle Gellar.

WTF!?!? Tidbits TMZ reports that Lamar Odom and Khloé Kardashian have

voluntarily pulled the plug on their E! reality show, Khloe and Lamar (an intense brainstorming session must have taken place to come up with that title), so that Lamar can focus solely on reviving his dying basketball career. It sounds like a step forward for humanity, until you realize it comes on the heels of the news that the Kardashians just signed a $40 million deal with E! for the next three years, reportedly making it the biggest deal in reality television ever. And we’re back to sad actuality.

On Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live, Gabourey Sidibe

revealed that her most “disappointing” celebrity encounter was with Joan Cusack when the two met at an industry party. Gabourey explained: “It was before I became [famous] and I was, like, at some industry party and she says, ‘Are you an actress?’ and I said, ‘Yeah,’ and she says, ‘Oh honey, you should really quit the business. It’s so image conscious.’” No offense, but… has Joan Cusack seen her face in a mirror?

Lindsay Lohan’s been busy shooting her

much-hyped cameo for Glee, but has reportedly been showing up late, flubbing her lines, and randomly disappearing so that no one can find her. The producers do realize who they hired, right? Expecting Lindsay to be on time is like hoping she won’t take advantage of an open bar; it’s just not based in reality.

And because Lindsay is the pop culture gift that keeps on giving, while she was at the White

House Correspondents’ Dinner, she purportedly tipped a bathroom attendant $100 after tearing up and telling her, “You’re too old to be doing this!” Or maybe it was just that she got a glimpse into her future?

During a radio interview with New York’s Now FM, The Wanted claimed that Christina Aguilera was “a total bitch” and is “nothing special.” Yes, because marginally talented boy bands are completely original. 19-year-old Josh Hutcherson (of The Hunger Games) was snapped by paparazzi leaving a Ralphs market in L.A. carrying a $170 bottle of Macallan whiskey, which he allegedly bought with a fake ID. First things first, he’s 19?! Oof, his hotness factor just received a significant boost, which I didn’t even think was possible. Secondly, um, didn’t we all do this at 19? STFU and let that boy DRANK. People Magazine has named Beyoncé the World’s Most Beautiful

Ruby-Colored Glasses

Social Media Is After My Organs!

T

he big question on my mind lately has been, “Should I become an organ donor or not?” This all started a few days ago when Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, made the announcement that the social network would make it easier to sign up as an organ donor and post your status on your profile. I’m not sure if I like this! I’ve never really liked Mark that much. Don’t get me wrong: I respect what he has done for social media, but he has always seemed like a dick. So giving up my organs just by clicking them away on Facebook feels kind of weird to me. First off, how does this work? I know we have to check organ donor on our profile, and then we’re forwarded to sign up with our state donor registry, but then what? Should I create a Facebook page for my kidneys, liver or heart to make them more desirable to others? I’m pretty sure I don’t have any good profile pics of my organs. I do however have plenty of shots of what I do to my kidneys and liver on weekends, and those pictures would not make anyone want either organ. As a matter of fact, who would want any of my organs? I’ve been hard on my body over the years. This also brings up many more questions. Can you “poke” my organs? Now calm down, boys! I’m not talking about the many “organs” I’ve had poke me over the years. What I mean to say is, can you send a poke via Facebook to someone’s heart or kidney? Or what about Farmville? Can we play Farmville with your organs? That just sounds gross. I almost feel like Hannibal Lecter writing this. In my mind, I imagine Mark Zuckerberg in a dark house on a hill with a basement full of organs from around the world, and as each of us clicks away our organs, he is

You can see Ruby Wednesday nights @ 8p.m. at Mellow Mushroom Midtown, Thursday nights @10 at the Cockpit, and most Sundays with the Armorettes at 8pm 18 | davidatlanta

there to greet them. Okay, now I really feel like Hannibal Lecter! Truth is, I think Mark and the gang are trying to do good, I hope… Reports say that if we all jump on board with this idea, it could turn into a social solution to a real medical problem. T h e r e currently just aren’t enough donor organs to go around. Ok Mark, here I go. I’m clicking you or whomever my organs… Wow! That wasn’t so bad and didn’t take that long. I may even feel better about myself. Yes, I think I do! This can be a touchy subject for some people, myself included, but I look at it like this: As a person that’s still alive, I would be glad to give one of my organs to a family member or close friend, so why not help save lives after I’m gone. Phew! After all these tough decisions, I think I need a drink! Much love, Ruby Redd

Jack Black Goes Gay (Maybe) Actor talks playing a real-life man who might be gay – and the pedicure he gave Shirley MacLaine

I

by Chris Azzopardi

s this Jack Black’s first gay role? As a small-town Texan teddy bear who goes off the deep end, it might be. But, because the real-life man he’s playing isn’t out, we may never truly know. Enter Bernie, an offbeat black comedy based on a true story of a flamboyant people-pleaser who befriends the local she-devil, and then turns on her. As the titular mortician who is, as one townie calls him, “light in the loafers,” Jack – known for fun-loving roles in School of Rock and Tropic Thunder, and a hilarious kidnapping cameo in last year’s The Muppets – is totally non-Black, playing Bernie Tiede with understated finesse, an effeminate lisp and an endearing touch. We got Black on the phone for an exclusive chat about his maybe-gay turn, what he has in common with Bernie and how LGBT rights is a “no-brainer” issue for him.

Was giving Shirley MacLaine a pedicure the gayest thing you’ve done in your career? Yeah, that was pretty gay. I wasn’t really thinking gay or straight while I was doing it. I was really just thinking about giving the best pedicure that I could. I thought that I was damn good. Were you shocked at my proficiency?

Very much so. Key is blowing off excess. That was just instinct. I think maybe I did pedicures in a past life.

Does your wife make you give her pedicures now? No. My wife gave me a pedicure the other day. That’s true love, man.

The music in the movie isn’t exactly anything like your hardcore comedy band, Tenacious D. What was it like to go into flamboyant

musical-theater mode for those? It didn’t feel that much of a departure for me, actually. Those songs, I loved singing them. It was a blast. I think they’re actually pretty catchy tunes. (Sings) “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!” I loved singing that, I got into it. There’s something really joyous in singing about our savior.

You’re biased. You were Jesus in Funny or Die’s “Prop 8: The Musical.” Speaking of which, how did that come about? I had worked with Marc Shaiman on the Oscars; we did a thing with me and Will Ferrell where we were presenting for Best Original Song. Anyway, I knew Marc Shaiman so he called me up, I believe, and said, “Hey, we’re doing this thing on Prop 8,” and I was like, “Let’s do it.”

Why was this important for you to be a part of? It’s a rights issue. I’ve got a lot of gay and lesbian friends and family, so it’s personal to me when people and the government start talking about them as less than. It just seems like one of the no-brainers in our society. There are not a lot of no-brainers where you’re like, “This is right and that is wrong and I’m definitely on this side,” where you want to go out and sing about it and do things. But it feels good to be on the right side of history.

The community Bernie lived in speculated that he might be gay. Do you feel, despite how adored he was, they would’ve turned on him if he were out? I don’t know. It’s hard to say. But it’s not a town that had, at the time anyway, a lot of people out of the closet just being who they really were. But the love was pretty intense, so I think he would’ve remained popular if he had just come out. I mean, there would definitely be some david atlanta | 23

haters; there is lots of homophobia in that neck of the woods.

What’s your take on Bernie’s homosexuality as it’s implied in the film?

Did you shoot in the actual town, Carthage, TX?

You know, I met him and I talked to him and that is a question I probably should’ve asked. But I didn’t want to. It just felt personal, like none of my business. I don’t want to ask someone their (sexual orientation); that’s for him to say. I mean, I’ve got my feelings – obviously I felt like I was playing him accurately – but he never came out himself, so I wouldn’t be bringing him out if he didn’t want to come out. It’s such a big part of who he is, and the character of Bernie, I feel like he’s got a secret he’s been living with his whole life. In a small town in east Texas, you’re not gonna come out and be all open. That speaks to the secrets that we carry.

We shot it near Austin. We never went to east Texas, to the actual place. It’s a lot different, actually. If you’re in and around Austin, that’s sort of a blue oasis in a sea of red – that’s where I’d live if I lived in Texas. I actually would love to live in Austin. It’s pretty groovy, pretty open.

What did you make of Shirley MacLaine’s character, Marge? They were just friends. (Bernie) volunteered that they had never had any sexual relations, that they were just friends and travel companions. He was her servant; that was their relationship. It was more of a master/slave relationship than a true friendship, but there was an element of love and friendship there, too, and a codependency. One of his character flaws is that he has to be loved; he was the most popular in this small town for a reason – because he wanted to be. He wanted everyone to like him, and she was a tough nut to crack. She didn’t really want to like him, and he had to work on her. If you didn’t like him, he’d make it his life’s mission to get you to like him. I think he was truly afraid that if he left her that she would hate him, and he couldn’t live with that – so he stayed for an unhealthy amount of time until he just snapped. 24 | davidatlanta

Well, do you know of any straight men who would get pedicures and listen to show tunes and make curtains? Let me think about this. Wait a second. I’ve got two out of three there. I’ve got a big musicaltheater background from high school. I was a big musical-theater nerd; Ben Vereen was my hero. And pedicures – I love a pedicure. Someone’s gotta scrape off the cement down there on the heel. It’s like the surface of Mars down there. As for curtain making, that’s where I draw the line. I just have no interest in that. But I am sure there are straight dudes who have the trifecta under their belts. I’m certain of it.

Nina’s thorny Flowers

C

by Elijah Sarkesian hances are, if you follow the drag scene at all, you know about Nina Flowers.

Since coming in second during the first season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, where she also won the Miss Congeniality award, Flowers has become one of the biggest names in the drag scene. The edgy performer has helped push the popularity of a less traditional approach to drag, one that relies less on stereotypical forms of femininity and more on creating art. There’s more to Flowers than just drag, though. Flowers – a.k.a. Jorge Flores – has a second career as the successful DJ Flowers. Flowers’ career as a DJ goes back to his time as a 12-year-old in Puerto Rico. Currently in the midst of a busy schedule, Flowers took the time to speak with David Magazine about getting her start as both a DJ and a drag queen, as well as dishing a bit about – what else? – RuPaul’s Drag Race.

How did you get your start in the drag world? I started doing drag, after attending a beauty school in Puerto Rico to become a make-up artist. It touched my creative side and I ended having a love for makeup. I practiced on myself and like how I evolved into a new persona by using make up.

Did growing up in Puerto Rico shape who you are as a drag queen? I think so… Puerto Rico is a small island with a smaller gay community when compared to other U.S. cities. The drag queens in Puerto Rico have to be very creative with their work, and polished to keep the audience’s attention. Drag there is very competitive, and considering I’ve been doing drag there for 15 years that did impact my approach to drag. For me it’s important to keep my work fresh and new.

davidatlanta | 29

Who are your influences? What influences my art has been the fashion and music from the 80s. While that has always been my base, I continue to get influenced and inspired by art, cartoons, comics, and nature.

You’ve definitely been one of the more notable figures in androgynous drag. How does it feel to see that style become more popular among up-and-coming drag queens? Thank you for the compliment. It feels amazing! I’m happy to have inspired other queens to approach a different style of drag than what would be considered traditional. I would hope that I’ve let other performers know it’s okay to be different. Everyone should respect each other’s choices when it comes to drag art.

Have you seen any change in the perception of drag since your season or since RuPaul’s Drag Race has become a bit more of a mainstream hit? Absolutely! I believe there is a greater appreciation for the diversity of drag…with that a respect for the hard work that goes into it as a profession.

How did your participation on RuPaul’s Drag Race change your reception from audiences? Reception has been incredible! To be recognized both nationally and internationally has been incredible! Definitely has done wonders for ongoing work. I can’t wait to return to Atlanta.

What do you think makes the first season of the show stand out from subsequent seasons? Well, it was ground breaking and unheard of as a reality show. Though, the current season is nothing compared to what we had around sponsorships, advertising, and prizes. In any case, I’m very grateful to have been one of the first entertainers showcased.

Who are your favorite contestants from the other seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race? Wow! So many to choose from…so this is a difficult question, but from season two, Jessica Wild, Jujubee and Raven; from season three, Raja, Manila Luzon and Yara Sofia; and from season four, Sharon Needles, Chad Michaels and Latrice Royale.

With RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars coming up, who do you want to see in the competition? Well, all the one’s I’ve already mentioned, but to include season one I’d say Ongina, Shannel and me, of course! 30 | davidatlanta

In addition to being amazing in drag, you’re also a notable DJ. How did you get your start in that scene? I was a DJ way before I started doing drag. I had a very strong interest very early on. My dad bought me my first turntables at 12 years old. In my early teens I started getting gigs doing private parties, and was recognized within the community, and by age 16 I was spinning at many of the big name clubs around the island.

Have you been able to book more gigs as a DJ since your time on RuPaul’s Drag Race? Absolutely! As a performer I always introduce the fact that I also DJ. The word continues to grow. I’ve DJ’d in NYC, Boston, Miami, Tampa and Palm Springs to name a few [places]. I also have several residencies such as the one I have in my hometown, Denver, at Tracks Night Club; included is also Boston, which many think is my second home. I’m in Boston every other month spinning for EPIC Saturdays, promoted by “Chris Harris and Gay Mafia Boston,” and I’ve also done some repeat appearances at Club Score in Miami, FL. Most recently, I was honored by being invited to spin for Jeffrey Sanker’s White Party in Palms Springs…an amazing event. I’m also now scheduled to spin at Matinee in Las Vegas for Memorial Day weekend. You can always keep up with what I’m doing, spinning or performing at www. ninaflowers.com or on my Facebook pages (www.facebook.com/ninaflowersfans or www. facebook.con/djflowersfans). By the way, I finally downloaded some of my sets on SoundCloud, so you can look me up there too.

What would you like to do in the future with your DJ career? I would like to take it to the next level and start producing for other great entertainers.

Do you have any major plans coming up as far as your drag career is concerned? Well, so far I’ve released 4 singles and one EP. You can also find these on www.ninaflowers. com. I’m currently about to release my 5th single, “Rock the Beat” produced by DJ/ Producer William Umana. Keep an ear out!

What advice do you have for up-and-coming drag performers? Be unique, original and true to yourself. Also, learn to appreciate other styles of drag. There is some incredible talent out there. davidatlanta | 31

Getting Fringe-y Wid It

“D

by Catherine Maddox

on’t get me wrong,” Diana Brown, Executive Director of Atlanta’s Fringe Festival laughingly insists, “I’m a real hater.” This statement from the same woman who soliloquizes the “ethereal, magic, and temporary” experience of live theatre, is referring to the kind of hate that comes only from the other side of love. Fringe festivals nationwide gather actors from across the country to one city, packing as many shows and performers into as many time slots and venues as an operating budget for the arts will allow, providing a visibility for smaller theatres and artists, and at the same time granting to the city a level of accessibility to theatre usually reserved for cheaper thrills like the movies. The upcoming

Atlanta Fringe Festival, running May 9th to the 13th, boasts 27 shows from local and national artists, across five different venues. An actor herself with Atlanta’s Twinhead Theatre, Brown has certainly earned her right to hate on a poor performance, or one that simply isn’t her cup of tea. When attending Minneapolis’s Fringe Festival in 2006, one of the inspirations for Atlanta’s, Brown saw shows that wow-ed her, as well as ones that were, well, fun to talk about anyway. Most important to Brown is for artists to share an equal opportunity to this exciting platform that does not necessarily preclude a risk of failure. The selection process was done by lottery, and has been faulted by some for being a little too fair, according to Brown. Out of forty submissions sent via social networking sites, only 27 slots were available. Because this is the festival’s first year, the Fringe was given no real funding to speak of, and thus had no selection committee. So Brown decided to do what she thought of as the fairest thing – drawing names from a hat. Without any preferential treatment or pre-appointed slots for local theatres, save the one guaranteed for Twinheadthe theatre of most of the

Fringe organizers, Brown along with other volunteer staff passed a hat full of names around a circle and let the lineup be decided by fate. Brown does say that her conscience had her throw in Twinhead’s name just to see if it would have been chosen, given the same odds as the others, which it was; but some in the Atlanta theatre community remain upset that local talent did not hold more sway. “People are mad at me right now,” Brown says, who is still saddened that some of her close friends were not among the lucky 27. She quickly points out the “Bring-Your-OwnVenue” option detailed on the event site for those who did not make the cut, but it’s understandable that some wounds may still be a bit salty. First-time organizing is not for the faint of heart. Sour grapes aside, the Fringe Fest line-up is pretty outstanding-looking, comprised of a diverse group of actors from across the country. From serial killers to Red Riding Hood to Shakespeare, the topics are fresh as some of the new bloods starring in them. Brown & co. have created playlists, categorizing the shows according to taste. For the freaks, there’s “Dark and Twisted,” an entire

dance category for swan-lovers, and a Gaylist (duh), among others. For those of you who must dip your toes in the pond before full immersion, the Fringe’s official opening party on May 9th in Decatur Marta Plaza will feature a three-minute preview to each show, as well as prizes and give-aways, the cream of which are tickets from Megabus, the official sponsor of the Fringe Festival as well as the bougier Greyhound of the young and/or the restless. As far as her hard work is concerned, Brown just wants to prevent people’s heads from being so far up their own Netflix-addictions they can no longer remember the swish of an open curtain, or a monologue with natural pauses, unfrozen by buffering. To those of you haters, Brown says, “Theatre is still cool. It’s still relevant. It’s adapting to try and keep it’s voice.” The Atlanta Fringe Festival takes place from May 9th-13th at multiple venues. Visit atlantafringe.org for more information and schedule of events.

Star Dust… (My brief encounter with Margaret Cho)

“D

amn! It’s one of THOSE crowds!”, I thought to myself while backstage at Midtown’s The Laughing Skull referring to those RUDE ass whores sitting on the front row constantly making loud comments to the comedians on stage. This wasn’t good because I was already nervous as hell! Not just because of the disruptive crowd but one of my favorite comedians is sitting in the green room and this will be the first time she’ll see me (or hear me) go on. Margaret Cho is actually a favorite for a lot of gays, and not only does she love us back, she’s family. I was the feature act this weekend for a very unique and sexy comedian, Ian Harvie (he’s still hott even though he used to be a “she”, yep transgendered). He is also pretty good on the mic and likes to keep it REAL! Anyway child, he toured a lot with Margaret Cho so naturally Margaret stopped by and decided to do a few minutes. The comedian that was on stage before me grew tired of the crowd’s “Gladiator-Coliseum” type behavior, gave up, and said “F*ck it” then walked off. The host of the evening kept the show moving by introducing the next comedian, which was me. I had a Whitney moment as I thought to myself, “hell to the naw!” but then I felt like “I got to go out there and do the damn thing! I can’t turn back now”. I think my survival ‘lyp-sync-for-your-life” type attitude helped, because as soon as I stepped out on that stage, I became the “bitch you don’t want to f*ck with!” (even though my under arms failed at hiding my nervous sweat circles). But all that didn’t matter as the ‘stars’ must have been lined up for me tonight because I ended up winning that crowd over like Russell Crowe did when he defeated those tigers…or lions…or whatever he damn defeated. God I was soooo happy and relieved. It doesn’t matter how funny you are, stand up can be THE most intimidating form of entertainment out there! Margaret was right there in the wings as she was about to go on next and gave me a thumbs up! I guess she was impressed, don’t get me lying child, the next thing I knew after she got off stage, I was in her Atlanta condo having “tea and crumpets” with her and a few folks. Let me just say this, I know I’m still not where I want to be in stand up just yet, but this night I was happy as hell for this… even if it was just a little ‘star dust’. UNTIL next week, DON’T read the girls, instead read The Brent Star Report!

Houston Rhines heats up eCupid by Joseph Brownell

Y

ou may recognize Houston Rhines from Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You” video or from his guest star roles on ABC hits Grey’s Anatomy and Castle, but whethers or not you’re familiar with Rhines, cupid will shoot straight for your heart once you lay eyes on him. Rhines’ stars as Marshall in eCupid, the latest comedy from writer/director JC Calciano. With a 30th birthday quickly approaching, Marshall begins to doubt his life, including his 7-year relationship with Gabe, played by the adorable Noah Schuffman. The monotony of his job and sex life leads Marshall to try an online “love” app. Hilarity and hijinks ensue as the app takes on a life of its own just to show Marshall that his life isn’t as bad as he thinks. David Magazine caught up with Houston before eCupid’s DVD release and found out what it was like to work with Morgan Fairchild, how he actually got that Kelly Clarkson video role and what’s next for the hot young actor.

What attracted you to the role of Marshall? I actually auditioned for another JC Calciano

48 | davidatlanta

film and I didn’t get the part. When it came to casting eCupid, he had a hard time finding me because of agency stuff so he actually reached out on Facebook, back when I had a Facebook. He pitched the project to me and sent me the script. I was into it right away the role and what the character was going through and the message in its entirety.

Speaking of its message, do you think eCupid is just for gay audiences? No, absolutely not. The message is universal and the relationship is the same as any other relationship, gay or straight. One of my favorite moments when we screened the movie in Toronto was a man in the front row before asking his question saying, ‘I love this film. I can’t wait to take my wife to see it.’ It struck a chord with what I was hoping to get across. Everyone can relate to this story.

I read somewhere that eCupid was shot quickly, is that difficult as an actor especially when you are supposed to be portraying a couple that have been together for 7 years? Oh my god, yes. With relationship stuff you kinda do your homework first. It was so fast and the days were so long and sometimes since I’m in the majority of the scenes, it would be cut

and I would sprint down to wardrobe and change my outfit while they were adjusting shots, then run back while being yelled at to hurry up. It was grueling but at the same time made it fun.

eCupid stars gay icon Morgan Fairchild, what was it like working with her? It was amazing. When she was on set she had these classic Hollywood stories and me and Noah didn’t want to go back to our rooms or anything. We just wanted to hang out and listen to her talk the whole time. She’s such a professional so watching her was like an acting class in itself.

If you could say Marshall’s online dating profile in 3 sentences, what would it say? Hardworking . . . um . . . you’ve stumped me on this one. [pause] Hardworking, fun-loving seeks same who likes to go to dinner, have a cocktail at a lounge and intimate time in front of a movie. How does that sound, would you fall for him?

Ummmm. . . I might fall for him.

You were also in Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You”. How’d that happen? I don’t think I was even supposed to be at the original audition. The audition was held right down the road from my house and I kinda wandered in. They ended up liking me and bringing me back a couple times.

eCupid deals with the online world of dating, have you ever pursued that route? Through Twitter people always hit me up so I see how easy it is too meet people. I’ll actually have someone on Twitter show up somewhere because I said where I was on Twitter but I’ve never used online dating.

What is something that people wouldn’t know about Houston Rhines? I’m a gigantic comic-book nerd. Really nerdy.

Who’s your favorite comic book character? [pause] Ever? Probably Daredevil.

That franchise failed with Ben Affleck – maybe we should get you to reinvigorate it?

[laughs] That was a hard one.

I like it.

I’m sure you get it all time but you resemble Nathan Fillian from ABC’s Castle and you guest starred on Castle. What was it like on the set being such a dead ringer for Nathan?

So, what’s next for Houston Rhines?

It was really funny. No one said anything at all but I’ve been getting it my whole life. Wardrobe was like ‘you look just like Nathan’ and I was like ‘don’t tell anybody, it’s a secret’ [laughs]. I thought there was no way they would offer me the role but it worked out.

Just shot a comedy pilot for ABC called Awesome Town. It’s really funny written by Adam Sztykiel, who wrote Due Date, so just some great comedy minds. We’re waiting to see if it gets picked up. eCupid starring Houston Rhines and Noah Schuffman with a cameo by Morgan Fairchild is available May 15th. Pick up your copy at Brushstrokes today.

FairyScopes

ARIES (March 20 – April 19): Your efforts at solving problems at work will be mired in obstruction for a while yet. Work off the frustration with moderate exercise. Remember you’re the one being edgy and impatient; be nice to colleagues! The good news: Money is coming your way!

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20): Be very careful of sports injuries! Otherwise, be daring. Say what’s on your mind. Personally and professionally you’re looking fabulous. Hard work is sure to be rewarded. You could even luck out on the lotto on the 13th. GEMINI (May 21- June 20): The less you say, the more people will listen. Busy as your brain is, the stars promise a closed trap and an open mind will bring you lots of new information, insight and respect from others. CANCER (June 21- July 22): Your energy and ambition are cranking up, maybe a little too hard. Keep your eyes open for opportunities, but look ahead and exercise judgment. Gossip and friendly chatter are tempting distractions. Keep your mind focused on the prize. LEO (July 23 – August 22): All eyes and ears are focused on you. Make the most of this opportunity. How you turn a sudden (financial?) shock into an opportunity could impress everyone around. Think quickly, show spontaneous foresight, and recruit help as you need it. VIRGO (August 23 – September 22): You’re the queen of exacting details, but let that go and look at the larger picture. You’ll get a clearer overview of where and how those details work best. Explore new ideas, tastes and feelings. Celebrating the sensual will prove practical. LIBRA (September 23 – October 22): Your ruler Venus usually confers graceful manners. Now she’s pushing you to get slutty. You’ll have time to explore your sensual, adventurous side. Consider ground rules, good sense and protection. If partnered, talk with your mate about how to focus that passion. SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21): Brutal honesty with your friends will not only clear away lugs you’re better off without, but it can also alienate folks you should value personally or professionally. If you want brutal honesty, start on yourself and your current direction in life.

Scopes brought to you by Jack Fertig, professional astrologer since 1977. Visit his website at www.starjack.com. 56 | davidatlanta

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20): Your own charms and good work will get you ahead at work, but your partner could prove the secret weapon in helping you cement connections that will help promote you. Your competitive streak is coming out. Keep it light and playful. CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19): A critique of your work may feel devastating. Set your feelings aside and learn what you can from that. There’s always room for improvement and the lessons here can be just what you need to push forward. AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18): Family arguments can reveal a lot and might even prove to be blessings in disguise. Sexual adventures – or otherwise acting like a teenage boy – can go wrong. Be very careful. Remember you have nothing to prove! PISCES (February 19 – March 19): Open communications with those close to you can prove very lucrative, or at least help you focus on what really matters. Keep your ears open and let family and friends know what you want.

Bitch! Session

I’d like to see things from your point of view but I can’t seem to get my head that far up my ass.

Boo... Bring back Charlie Brown. If you want to talk to me please don’t cruise me. It’s a lot sexier to come up and introduce yourself than to stare at me awkwardly from the other side of the room.

So what if you have thousands of Facebook friends, do you have any real friends?

I love looking at you, I just hate listening to you! You can stop blaming everybody else for your problems. You are a trainwreck.

I’m a flaming homo and can shoot a gun, fix a car, and rock out a bowtie. How many of you “masc” guys wanna go up against me now? Lazy is just lazy … no matter how many excuses around it you wanna give.

Dear Daddy: When you become my accountant and have the ability to see where my finances are, then I welcome your opinion on my $50k car. Until then, keep making my payments. Muah!

Oh look, another fresh 21 year old who thinks they own a bar. Word of advice: respect your elders.

DADDY - Loved your come back against the twink. Many of us are sick of these little boys. They need to grow up and become MEN!

I’m happy Felix’s put in new ventilation systems! I hate smelling like smoke, so it’s nice to see a local bar move towards a great solution for everybody!

I hate when skinny ass boys talk to me about needing to go on a diet. Go screw yourselves and eat a donut. Then get hit by a car.

Dear history ignoramus - Labor Day was designated as the first Monday in September by President Grover Cleveland in 1894. It had nothing to do with the “Red Scare” of the 1950s. Get your facts straight, twit! [Editor’s Note: Cleveland chose September instead of May 1st from fear of Labor riots commemorating the 1886 Chicago Haymarket massacre.]

You can’t say I talk behind your back without giving specifics of what I supposedly said or who said I said it. Sounds like made up drama to me.

Gotta Bitch?
