WTF!?!? Tidbits Mary Cheney, daughter of Dick Cheney, and her longtime partner,

Heather Poe, were married in Washington, D.C. I honestly don’t think conservatives realize their overlord supports and has supported for years same-sex marriage, because their opposition is indefensible if DICK CHENEY of all people can show his support.

Some random backup dancer named Joshua Lee Ayers is accusing J. Lo’s current piece, Casper Smart, of being an undercover homo playing hetero to further his career. Radar Online points to Ayers’ Twitter page, where he posted a photo of Casper “shirtless, wearing shiny gold short shorts obviously stuffed with something, a sparkly bejeweled belt, a scarf and a deer hunter hat while surrounded by other shirtless men in their underwear.” Obviously, J. Lo’s publicist has denied the allegations, blaming it on a slow news week. Isn’t wearing gold hotpants and being surrounded by other half-naked men pretty much just another day at the office for the backup dancers of pop stars, though? And isn’t every “straight” backup dancer a little gay to begin with? To Casper’s credit, this Ayers guy seems like a fame-hungry homophobe. After the media started to pick up on the story, he tweeted: “Let’s get some facts strait. I’ve never been best friends with a gay guy, nor will I ever be. #notmyLIFEstyle [sic].” Kris Humphries, best known as Kim Kardashian’s ex-husband, allegedly told his post-Kim girlfriend, Myla Sinanaj (who’s been subpoenaed in their divorce case), that Kim’s mother, Kris Jenner, orchestrated the entire Ray J sex tape, not only formulating the idea, but also directing. The kicker: he claims Kris actually made Kim reshoot the tape because the first cut wasn’t “pretty” enough. First of all, using the term “reshoot” when talking about a porn tape gives the word a whole new meaning. Secondly, you mean to tell me the final, excruciatingly boring product came only after a reshoot? The first cut must have been worse than sitting through a screening of Sahara (not even Matthew McConaughey could save that movie). Let’s be honest, though: Kris Jenner is enough of a mastermind to have pulled this stunt off, but considering the source is Kris Humphries, who seems to have the intelligence of an orange, I’m going to have to call bullshit on this one.

Just eight months after splitting with his wife of 11 years, James Marsden has knocked up

Brazilian Ford model Rosa Costa. Male condoms are only 82–98% effective at preventing pregnancy. Fucking a gay guy is 100% effective. I’m just saying.

The Many Dimensions

of Katy Perry Pop star talks new 3D film, kissing gay boys and fighting hate with ‘love bullets’

N

by Chris Azzopardi

ot exactly last Friday night, but it still happened: Katy Perry called us from London, where it was nearly 1am If life really does imitate art, she smelled like a mini-bar on a night that’s soon to be a blackedout blur, right? “Not tonight,” she insists. “I have to play and be professional tomorrow, but maybe after the show I’ll be having a couple of Shirley Temples with some adult juice in them.” We spoke with Perry just after she made a surprise appearance in London for a screening of her new film, Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D, a docuconcert chronicling the California girl’s evolution from gospel-singing daughter of two pastors to international pop phenom … with the most lethal boobs in the world. During our interview, Perry told us what else they shoot besides whipped cream, how the gay community can relate to her movie and why Madonna doesn’t scare her. 14 | davidatlanta

You go from pretending to kiss girls to wanting to have sex with girls, recently joking during a radio interview that you’d like to do Rihanna. What’s up with all this faux lesbianism? You know, everybody’s been asking me about the duet with Rihanna and when it’s going to happen. I get that question every time I get interviewed. Obviously, we really want to do it and we want to do it in a big way, naturally; this (journalist) was doing this rapid fire of inappropriate questions of sexual things, and I just decided to throw her a curve ball. I do not discriminate against any beauty no matter what form it comes in, and Rihanna is gorgeous. I think that everybody would tap it if they could.

Have you ever kissed a gay boy and liked it? Yes, I have. It’s so funny. This boy I pseudo dated in high school, a fantastic flamenco dancer, was in Fiddler on the Roof with me and we were dating during the production, and I had just a tiny part but I was his first kiss. Cut to 10 years later, or even more, and we’re out at this place called Rasputin, this incredible gay club in

“A lot of times, people wanted me to be like someone else or sing like someone else or write like someone else. I wanted to be the first Katy Perry, but they couldn’t accept that.” Hollywood, and come to find out, he’s making out with my stylist. He’s still in it to win it, and he’s just become a part of our crew.

You’ve been hanging out with your gay friends in West Hollywood a lot lately. What’s been your most memorable gay night out? I don’t really decipher it as gay night or straight night; it’s the same night continually. I came from a really interesting perspective – interesting being the keyword, because it was obviously very suppressing and sheltering. I was set to think that gay people were an abomination, so I was not allowed to speak to anyone who was obviously fabulous and I was never allowed to associate with that type of people. Really, generally, I was never allowed to associate with anybody that wasn’t Christian. So I was kind of trapped in a bubble, and then it finally burst years later. Now I think that 90 percent of everyone I work with, from my assistant to two out of three of my managers, is either gay or lesbian. It’s been an incredible journey of acceptance and tolerance.

Where are your parents now on gay people? My parents have actually become more accepting and tolerant now. We’ve all grown up and evolved and broadened our mindset. Sometimes people have a really picky way of eating, right? And they don’t like certain foods, but a lot of times they haven’t even tried those foods. Once they try or know or get educated and have the facts, they’re more comfortable and there’s no judgment on your shrimp cocktail. I know that sounds so strange, but it’s this simple thing. A lot of people just aren’t educated; they still have this 1950s mindset, unfortunately. 16 | davidatlanta

Are you saying that you’ve tried the shrimp cocktail and gone lesbian? I don’t know if it would be appropriate for me to tell you what my straight or gay (experiences) have been in the past. (Laughs)

You’ve said Madonna had a lot of influence on this film, and her 1991 documentary Truth or Dare really resonated with the gay community. Yes, and still continues to.

Do you think Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D will have a similar effect on the gay community? I hope that people see that they don’t have to change themselves in order to achieve their goals or dreams, and they can accept the skin that they live in and overcome obstacles or judgments. The theme of this movie is me overcoming obstacles: where I came from, problems with my record label and my personal struggles. A lot of times, people wanted me to be like someone else or sing like someone else or write like someone else. I wanted to be the first Katy Perry, but they couldn’t accept that. So hopefully people can come away from (the film) saying, “I don’t have to change myself. I don’t have to fit in. I don’t have to be what someone else wants me to be in order to reach my goals in life.”

After what happened with Gaga – where Madonna mashed up “Born This Way” with “Express Yourself” for her upcoming tour and called Gaga “reductive” – are you scared of being too inspired by Madonna? No. I’m inspired by everyone. And you know, I think that the queens love a little catfight every once in a while. It’s good for the cocktails and the conversation, I’ll tell you that.

18 | davidatlanta

“Ur So Gay” and “I Kissed a Girl” didn’t sit well with some of the gay community when they came out. You obviously have a huge gay following now, but did you feel like you needed to prove your authenticity after all the uproar over those songs? I never really try and try hard. I like things to roll out naturally. People like to put me in a box. From the first official single, “I Kissed a Girl,” they always said I was a one-trick pony, and I’ve always known what I was gonna do next in my play-by-play and how I was gonna roll out the moments – and “I Kissed a Girl” was the strongest song for me at the time. It was also on the tip of everybody’s tongue pop culturally, even on television shows like Gossip Girl people were talking about it, and it was becoming more of an accepted idea to be bi-curious and to be bisexual. The song just took it over the edge for the public in some ways, but I think that anybody who saw a confusing message in those songs was either looking for a fight or taking it completely out of context. Anyone that really understood the songs understood the songs for what they were.

Now that more gay couples are able to legally marry, what would you tell them about marriage from your own experience? It’s everybody’s individual experience. I think you can be in love without walking down the aisle,

or you can walk down the aisle and be in love, but everybody deserves that choice and I think that equality is very important. People ask me questions about the whole Obama thing and him coming out and saying it publicly, and I’m like, “I hope soon enough we’ll look back and say to ourselves how ridiculous it was to think this way, just like it was during the civil rights movement.” We’re embarrassed. And it is completely embarrassing. We’re a young country and we’re developing slowly; we’re not as cultured as the Europeans. But that’s OK. We’re gonna get there, and hopefully there will be more tolerance in the world very soon and we won’t make the same mistake twice.

You’ve shot whipped cream and fireworks out of your boobs – Actually, if you look at the placement of those fireworks, they come from my spirit. (Laughs) But I know people love going straight to the tits. They’re a big target on me.

If you could shot anything else out of your boobs, what would it be? I’m gonna shoot down hate. I’m gonna shoot down all the people that hate, that sip on our haterade, that hate just to hate. I’m gonna shoot them down. But I’m gonna shoot them down with love bullets. And they’re non-violent. They don’t even hurt you. Like a Cupid’s arrow, they just turn you into a more tolerant, loving person. david atlanta | 19

Channing & Joe,

Stripped

Actors talk film’s gay following, wearing thongs and the real-life Magic Mike

“W

by Chris Azzopardi

earing a thong is a pain in the ass” escapes Joe Manganiello’s mouth with complete disregard to the glaring innuendo. “Oh god. I can’t believe I just said that.” Who can blame him? Avoiding double entendres about Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh’s unexpected – but completely acceptable – foray into the male-stripper world is hard (see?). Magic Mike stars Manganiello of True Blood, homo heartthrob Matt Bomer, Matthew McConaughey and Channing Tatum, the latter being the movie’s muse after it was revealed that the gay-loved dreamboat wasn’t just busting a move in 2006’s breakout role Step Up – before acting, he was pocketing dollar bills for his dance moves, too. One of Hollywood’s hottest actors, known for melting hearts in Dear John and The Vow, was suddenly faced with a poledancing past. His stripper alias? Chan Crawford. “That’s so lame,” Tatum says in our recent interview. “I didn’t choose it. But Crawford? What am I: Cindy Crawford’s brother?” In his late teens, the stint lasted a mere half-year – and though it’s all “pretty foggy,” he also remembers it being a “weird world” – but it was enough for Soderbergh to get behind the idea of turning Tatum’s dollar days into a big-screen event with salacious stripteases, a penis pump and a military fantasy come to life. “I just hope it’s fun for everybody: gay, straight, male, female … animal,” Tatum says. “I just want people to go and get a picture into this world, because I don’t think it’s ever been done on screen – never like this.” Never so hot, anyway. G-strings and rip-away costumes aside, there’s enough titillation in the names themselves to get the hormones doing their own little dance: Dallas (McConaughey), Ken (Bomer) and, perhaps the most stimulating besides Tatum’s titular character, Manganiello’s Big Dick Richie. “Apparently they said they wrote the script with me in mind. I don’t know who they talked to,” he says, as if to suggest that his pseudonym isn’t necessarily a sham. But is it? “You know, it’s interesting because people say, ‘Aren’t you worried about the expectation of playing this character and what’s going to be expected from you the rest of your dating life?’ And I say, ‘I’m just gonna revel in the curiosity.’” And so will we. david atlanta | 23

Magic Mike: Almost Gay? What if the strippers in Magic Mike were all gay? Expect a totally different – probably X-rated – movie, agree Manganiello and Tatum. But for bros who are all hetero to hang in … thongs? “It’s pretty hilarious, to be honest,” Tatum says. “You just accept it and forget that you’re hanging out in these banana hammocks.” Manganiello, who plays a hunky werewolf on True Blood, couldn’t forget – that thing was a constant reminder of how much he hates stuff in his butt. “Werewolves don’t wear underwear because they’re just gonna lose them anyway, so there’s that,” he says, “but prior to that, no – I’ve never had a thong on, ever. So this was my inaugural voyage.” And not just with thongs (to which he notes, now, “I’ve officially hung the thong up”). The boys went to L.A.’s Hollywood Men, a self-proclaimed man “buffet” in Southern California, to check out the scene. The clientele was mixed: Tatum observed lots of women – but also gay men. “It wasn’t just straight or gay,” Tatum recalls. “Females and males could go. The only reason in the movie it’s just women is because that was my experience.” Mostly, anyway. He did reveal to us that, once, he danced fully clothed on a platform at a gay bar. “We talked about making it more of a diverse crowd (for Magic Mike), but it just always felt contrived. I never knew how to do it correctly.” Do what you know, they say, and this is what Tatum, 32, knew: that he was 18 and living in Florida (the film takes place in Tampa, where it was also shot) when he decided to drop out of college football – and strip. The rest, though, isn’t at all real. “Magic Mike is a completely fictitious character,” he says, “but there was a Magic Mike in my group. He was a fantastic dancer and performer, but this has nothing to do with his actual life.”

For the other actors, that it’s so far removed from reality – shocking for the level of hotness in the movie – was part of the allure. “It’s just male wish fulfillment,” says Manganiello. “You hang out, get drunk, do a bunch of drugs with your buddies all day, and then you get out there on stage and grind on a bunch of women and have them grope you and stuff money down your pants. Then you take them all home, or into the parking lot or backstage or wherever, and you sleep it off, wake up, lift some weights and go back. It’s good work we’re being given.” And it’s good eye candy we’re being given. Is Manganiello clued into just how good? “I have a NewNowNext Award from the Logo channel,” he says, “and I spoke at the Human Rights Campaign as a straight man in favor of gay marriage. I’m well aware of the gay fan base.” As Alcide on the Alan Ball juggernaut, he really got our blood flowing – though, Manganiello says, the gay community first latched onto him during VH1’s So NoTORIous, because Tori Spelling “is somewhat of a gay icon.” “But definitely True Blood,” he continues. “That’s when I really felt it.” Tatum has done some pretty gay stuff in his career, too. Besides a goof-off scene in Magic Mike where, in Marilyn Monroe drag, he tries charming the sister of his new stripper-in-training (played by Alex Pettyfer of I Am Number Four), he also simulated butt sex on Jonah Hill in his big-screen comedy reboot of 21 Jump Street. The hard question comes: Which is gayer? He silently deliberates, and then makes his decision: “Humping Jonah, probably.” As for the Marilyn scene, of all the things in the movie that weren’t make-believe, one of Tatum’s best roles might be as the blonde bombshell ... because this wasn’t his first time doing her. “I actually did that in my real life to a buddy of mine. It was his birthday and he was at Denny’s

david atlanta | 25

and I totally bum-rushed the table and embarrassed the hell out of him in public.” And his reason for dressing as Marilyn should be obvious, but we ask anyway. “Because she sang ‘happy birthday’ to the president. Come on.” Channing, you’re so gay. “Damn right – and proud of it!” he kids. Drag queen, stripper, lovebird – no wonder these ladies at the revue, and the gay men watching them, want to put a few bucks in his thong. There’s no alpha male in him.

“I don’t think you need to act tough, and I don’t think you need to cry to show you’re emotional and have feelings; that’s not the case either,” he says. “I love my life and I’m about as happy as I could ever be, and so I’m bringing that to my characters.” Coming up is a movie with Mark Ruffalo about Olympic wrestlers called Foxcatcher. Tatum teases, “That gets pretty dirty.” Two words: damn right. david atlanta | 27

Joe’s on Juniper is playing games!

(And it’s time I say something about it!) Oh I see, Joe’s on Juniper are always playing games with their customers! I thought it was bad enough whenever I stopped by there on the weekends and their patio would be PACKED…with either a bunch of folks that I know or all-day-long eye candy that come in different flavors (but don’t touch…even though some of them WANT you to, but don’t get me lying). Then they started doing those dangerous “tater tot” nachos (love it! Especially when you have the munchies, but don’t get me lying). Oh and during the week, that’s when they’re really playing games. First of all, they blatantly call out Crazy Bitch Bingo hosted by the witty and “envelope pusher’ Bryen Chtistopher on their successful Wednesday nights, then they play with our minds with their trivia nights on Thursdays hosted by Jim Ward (trust me, you can learn a lot on this night child). And now they’re really playing a game with something NEW which will be every Tuesday called THE PRICE IS RIGHT! That’s right, that game we all grew up watching is coming to Joe’s! I’ll tell you who the emcee is later in this column. It starts July 17th (in just two weeks! Eeek!). They will call a few folks from random tables to “come on down” (that alone is worth stopping by to see folks taking off from their tables to win stuff). Then from there, whomever come close to guessing the right price of a particular random item will move on to play a few rounds in front of a live audience! Aside from the emcee, there will also be a special guest entertainer stopping by to entertain us during half time. I wanted to get strippers to do that but General Manager Alice reminded me folks will be EATING! And yes, we will be spinning that wheel honey and giving away all kinds of fun prizes! Come early, order your food and ‘dranks’, and expect the unexpected! This game show starts at 8pm, July 17th and every Tuesday after that. Oh and as far as the emcee, I can describe him in one word, ME. UNTIL next week, DON’T read the girls, instead read The Brent Star Report! david atlanta | 31

Chester French makes MUSIC 4 TNGRS

I

by Corian Ellisor

t is nice to know that GAY is the new buzz word right now. Companies, businesses even artists are realizing the power of the gay dollar. They are gearing promotional materials towards the clientele of the gays because we are loyal and devoted costumers. If we like you, we will phone a friend, tweet it or send a message in a bottle. We need as many allies as we can get in the aggressively homophobic world we live in. It also makes us feel special and who doesn’t want to be recognized as the powerful market that we are? A case in point is the new video “Black Girls” from rock duo, D.A. Wallach and Maxwell Drummey of Chester French. Not only is the video featuring an interracial couple, it also contains some pretty hot girl-on-girl action. I talked with the two members of the band about their stance on the music they make and how it impacts their listeners.

DM: What do you guys have going on right now? Chester French: Making music, hanging out, playing with my dog and just living a regular lifestyle.

You’ve had some great success over the past couple of years, and you are coming out with a new album. Can we expect that to be different or similar from your previous album? I think the production is a little more modern sounding. We took what we learned from doing our last album and our mixtape and combined it with what people responded to and what we loved doing.

What inspired the song, “Black Girls?” One day Max made a demo of a song. The next day D.A. wrote a lyric about his affinity for black women and I think the results sort of speak for itself.

So what prompted the making of the video? D.A. suggested we do a video like that. We talked to director Francesco Carrozzini about making the video. The two of them masterminded the concept. Francesco is a really good director/photographer that we had worked with before. He shot our first album cover. We had a fun david atlanta | 47

day working with him. We get along with him, so we asked him to do the video.

Where is Chester French touring and what are you excited about performing live?

How do you feel about the attention you have gotten because of the video?

We are doing a lot of touring around Los Angeles. We are also going to the cities were we have a bigger fan base. The first couple of years we did a lot of driving nonstop around the country. We found specific cities where we have a lot of fans concentrated. We are definitely going to those places.

We try not to read what people say about Chester French in general, positive or negative. We gather that some people like it and some people don’t. Any time that you do something that engages sex and race, it is intense and public. People are going to have different reactions. We think that it is cool that it has inspired people to talk about that sort of thing.

Speaking of garnering all of these extreme reactions, is that what you try to do with your music? We are not necessarily trying to get a specific reaction from our audience. We just try to make things that we relate to musically or emotionally and hopefully others will too.

Obviously you have some sort of gay fan base; especially with the video. Do you see yourselves as a group that expressive what is going on in our everyday culture? We both think about the world and what it is like in contemporary times. We are not trend chasing, cause chasing or looking out for what is hot every five minutes. That is sort of silly. In general we are aware of what’s going on culturally and socially. It does have an impact on what we do. One of the interesting things with the video is that youtube blocked the video or age restricted it. On the surface the language that they used is “Anything intended to arose is ground for being blocked.” I am pretty sure that if it were a heterosexual couple then youtube would have not blocked it. I don’t think that by making the video we were trying to make some super political statement, but we are not uncomfortable with having same sex love in our work. It was a nice thing to hear from people who are in interracial relationships. They felt like the song spoke to them. Also, knowing that there were same sex couples who felt like it was a positive statement affirmed something about what’s going on right now. 48 | davidatlanta

Something special about this album is how it plays to our skills in the studio. Max’s production takes advantage of a huge number of instruments that we can not replicate live. Whenever we play this live, we are going to look at an interesting way to represent the music instead of an exact duplicate to what the recordings are.

How do you perform with just two of you? For different performances we will do different things. Sometimes we will do acoustic or striped down things with just the two of us. In the past, we have had a five or six piece band of pretty awesome musicians. Between the group of us, we figure out how to make the songs fun and listenable for what they are.

Is there anything that you want to say about the album that you haven’t already said? It’s fun. We tried to make an album that is fun and not super self serious. Before we get to old we want to make something that has a little bit of youth to it. People should go and check it out. We are already selling pre orders to it which is on our website and chesterfrench.com. We are selling the album with some cool merchandise packaged with it. We are trying to create a special experience.

Chester French is made up of two guys interested in making good music that people will enjoy. Go out and enjoy them and make sure to watch the video for “Black Girls.” You will not be disappointed. Chester French’s album MUSIC 4 TNGRS is available for pre order on their website Chesterfrench.com. They are offering some cool merchandise like a t shirt and a varsity jacket that you can pick up along with the album.

Charleston Pride A

by Elijah Sarkesian

mong the various Pride events in major cities across the United States, Charleston’s is still relatively new. The upcoming Charleston Pride, running July 12-15, marks the third annual event for the group. For an event that’s still in its infancy, though, its organizers certainly know how to put on a show. Atlanta-based Chris Coleman Enterprises is among the producers of this year’s activities. Along with co-sponsors Revolve Paper, Coleman is producing this year’s evening festivities, along with the closing Folly Beach party on Sunday. Atlantans will k now Coleman’s work from his annual Atlanta Pride closing party at Opera. Coleman’s series of events kick off with a meet and greet Friday at the host hotel, the Mills House. There will be representatives from several of the main sponsors of Charleston Pride, including drinks provided by Red Bull, Absolut, Bud Light, and Barefoot Wine. Friday night’s main events start off with the Empress and Emperor Pageant at the Music Farm. The pageant includes categories such as

Evening Gown, Creative Pride Wear, and Talent. Entertainment and hosting will be provided by Brook Collins and Ava Clear, along with performances by Coti Collins and Justin Atlanta. Immediately following the Empress and Emperor Pageant is the Sin party, which includes dance music courtesy of DJ Oren Nizri and an underwear fashion show. There will also be some special guest performances, according to Coleman. The event takes place at the Music Farm beginning at 9pm. Presale tickets are $15. During the day on Saturday, Charleston Pride will hold its annual pride parade. Kicking off at 11am, the parade will take over the Park Circle area of North Charleston. Immediately following is the Charleston Pride Rally at River Front Park. The rally includes a number of vendors and performers, including American Idol’s EJay Day and Chad Michaels from RuPaul’s Drag Race. Coleman also teases that a second American Idol alum will be performing as a surprise. Saturday night sees the Neptune party take over the South Carolina Aquarium’s Atrium. DJ Manny Lehman will provide the night’s music, while the party itself will include a fashion show.

Prepares to Party Headlining the event is Chad Michaels. Tickets begin at $25, and the doors open at 9pm. Following the Neptune party is the Worship party, also held at the South Carolina Aquarium in the Fish Tank Ballroom. The after-hours party from 2-5am will include Atlanta’s DJ Lydia Prim providing music, along with headliner Chad Michaels. Ticket prices begin at $25. Finally, the Folly Beach Party will close out Charleston Pride 2012. Taking place at (yes, you guessed correctly) Folly Beach, the event runs from 12-7pm. Music will be provided by DJ Scorpio throughout the event, while a fashion show will also take place during the event. Transportation will be provided from the host hotel to Folly Beach. For those who are less party-inclined, Charleston Pride does offer a number of other events. On the opening night of Charleston Pride, the schedule is dominated by the arts, with film, literature, and local art each having an outlet in Charleston’s Park Circle. Opening the evening is the second annual “Art for Pride” Art Walk at 5pm on July 12. The Art Walk features local LGBT artists, both new and established.

Attendees can get information about the artists and businesses involved during the event at the North Charleston Meeting Place, which serves as the center of the event. The event itself runs throughout North Charleston’s Old Business District on East Montague in Park Circle. Concurrently, the LGBT Film Festival will be screening two films at the Old North Charleston Picture House in Park Circle. The festival starts with Breakfast with Scot at 7pm, followed by a screening of Pariah at 9pm Also at 7pm, Gay In America author Scott Pasfield does a meetand-greet at South of Broadway. The event includes a presentation, panel discussion and book signing. Finally from 6-10pm, Takeover Charleston hosts a kickoff party in Park Circle. With many pride events taking place in June, Charleston Pride has an advantage all its own by taking place a month later. With Charleston being less than six hours away from Atlanta, Atlantans looking for a Pride to attend before ours in October still have a promising option. Freemasons Return to Heretic for Joining Hearts Benefit

F

by Elijah Sarkesian

ollowing a successful Atlanta debut in 2011, the internationally-acclaimed, UK-based duo Freemasons will be returning to Atlanta on July 6. For those who aren’t familiar with the Freemasons’ work, the duo has made a name for themselves in the pop world as master remixers, as well as producers of original content. Their work was featured prominently in Beyoncé’s remix arsenal for her B’Day album, with their mix of “Déjà Vu” garnering the duo a Grammy nomination. They’ve also worked with Kylie Minogue, co-producing her single “The One” from X. Other artists they’ve worked with include Kelly Rowland, Solange Knowles, and Wynter Gordon. Before his return to Atlanta, Freemasons member Russell Small spoke with me about what the duo plans to do in the future, what to expect in Atlanta, and the rising trend of dance music infiltrating the mainstream in the States.

The Freemasons have produced a number of original songs and remixes for pop artists over the past several years. Are there any major productions coming out in the near future? We are just about to sign a new deal with Ministry of Sound, which is very exciting. We feel they are a label that can really move us forward, they have a great team working behind the scenes. Our new single “Tears” should be ready to promo in the next few weeks and all being well, we should have an album out early next year.

American radio is increasingly embracing dance music. What has this done for

Freemasons professionally? What is your opinion on this trend in America? We have sort of sat back whilst this has all been going on, as its pretty much what we were doing before, combining R&B with house. We were not too sure where we should go musically, as we needed to evolve, but not sound the same as every other producer. At the end of the day you can never be totally original, but we have been working hard on sound design, so hopefully we should sound a little different from David Guetta and Avicii. As for radio now embracing dance music in the US, it’s got to be great for everyone involved in the scene, but I do think the quality of song has been lost a little in places.

This is your second time playing at the Heretic in Atlanta. How does it feel to return to Atlanta? What can attendees expect this time around? What are you looking forward to during your time in Atlanta? I really enjoyed my last experience at the Heretic; I met some great people and the whole club had such a great vibe. This time around I am looking forward to being shown a few sights by Lydia Prim; she has told me she’s out to corrupt me, which should be fun! Obviously I will be playing a different set this time, a few new mixes, slightly tougher in places, but still mixed in with a few Freemasons classics. Like their previous engagement, the Freemasons will be playing at Heretic in an event that benefits Joining Hearts. DJ Lydia Prim serves as the night’s opening act. Tickets are available now. FairyScopes

ARIES (March 20 – April 19): What looks like true love could just be co-dependency or the need for human contact. The only relationship you should be starting now is with a shrink, a 12-step group or a charity where you can be of service.

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20): As new ideas challenge long-held values you need to make some adjustments in thought and attitude. Don’t resist new thinking, but beware the zeal of the convert. Baby… bathwater… An independent mind can meld new ideas with the old. GEMINI (May 21- June 20): Growing and expressing yourself in new ways could throw a challenge to your friends. Maybe you need new friends. Still, be gentle with the old ones. You might need to make some apologies along the way. CANCER (June 21- July 22): Urges to protect your partner and your friends (or your partner from your friends) may be a projection of your own doubts and insecurities. In uncertain times your instinct is to protect hearth and home. Open alliances will serve you better than defensiveness. LEO (July 23 – August 22): Feeling moody and disconnected? Make time to hide out and take care of yourself. Perhaps the best way is to take care of others. Some local charity would be glad for your help. VIRGO (August 23 – September 22): Your work can inspire brilliant, provocative insights, but may not be the best place to share them – at least not at first. Think ahead and consider those inspirations carefully before presenting them to your boss or clients.

LIBRA (September 23 – October 22): Home and partnership are real-world enterprises, never matching the ideal. That gap can make you cranky, triggering upsets in your relationship. Mars entering your sign can feed your irritation. Moderate exercise (be careful not to overdo it!) will help you keep balance. SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21): You can’t avoid demands at work or niggling arguments, but you can stick to your principles and hold your head high. Scheduling time alone, preferably with the one you love, will keep you from burning out. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 20): A new found sense of clarity and ambition can make you a bit too critical and outspoken. Think carefully about repercussions; take the long view before speaking. You’d do better to welcome advice than to offer it. CAPRICORN (December 21 – January 19): Make an extra effort to be nice to colleagues. Your own efforts to push ahead might make trouble for them. Remember you’re all on the same team. Listen to their needs. The road to real success is slow, sure and cautious. AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18): Precocious brilliance may win a date but could upset a more serious relationship. Your mouth is a powerful weapon; be careful where you aim it and resolve to use your power for good. That requires a bit of restraint and humility. PISCES (February 19 – March 19): A surge of libido can open up erotic sensitivities you’d never considered but could also bring more trouble than fun. Pushing limits is one thing, tossing them away is another. Hold tight to your commitment to integrity and safety.

Bitch! Session

It really sucks that every major city in America celebrated Pride this past weekend except Atlanta. I love to shop at Whole Foods. The poor, trashy queens can’t cruise me there. They can’t afford it!

Does Sharon Needles have to end every interview with “Hail Satan”? Stop forcing your religion down my throat! Quit calling me “girl.” I’m obviously a man, and it’s a huge turn-off.

You might think you’re a Daddy, but when I have to sneak extra cash onto the table because your measly tips are embarassing… you’re just a cheap muther! Older educated men in Atlanta are crazy! Stop trying to be 20 and you may find someone who really wants to deal with you.

honey, it’s a badge of honor that I don’t know that pop crap you listen to. And I’m sure you’ve never heard of New Order.

It’s probably not a good idea to sarcastically say “Ugh, I’m dying” in a clinic on National HIV Testing Day. Critiquing your approach doesn’t mean I’m silencing you. If that were the case, you’d actually be quiet for once. If you can’t figure out a 20% percent tip, try using the calculator on your phone, ok?

All the conservatives who want to move to another country now that the Supreme Court has upheld the Affordable Health Care Act? Where exactly do they want to go? It doesn’t matter that you don’t think it’s racist. Putting stuff on your profile like “No black guys” still makes you look like a supreme douchebag.
