REVIVAL A selection of Patek Philippe's recent introductions combine vintageinspired design with an unmistakably modern approach. Here we review four new references that premiered at Watches & Wonders 2023.
A
t Watches & Wonders 2023, Patek Philippe introduced four timepieces with a decidedly vintage vibe. The numerals, case shapes, and dial treatments of these watches offer a design nod to the past. However, while the watches take their design
inspiration from vintage timepieces, they are powered by Patek Philippe’s most up-to-date and refined movements. Patek Philippe president Thierry Stern commented about the new releases and the variety of the brand’s watches. “Why does Patek Philippe offer so many different collections? Because each of them has its own character and its own way of enabling us to innovate and express ourselves.” That character is certainly evident in this new crop of retro-look timepieces.
The Calatrava 24-Hour Display Travel Time Reference 5224R-001
Travel watches have been a mainstay of Patek Philippe’s offerings for more than 100 years. The brand’s travel watches — with 24hour displays, like the new Reference 5224R-001 — date back to at least the early 20th century. A magnificent early example of this 24-hour display is a Chronometro Gondolo pocket watch made in 1905, which is on permanent display at the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. The new reference 5224R-001 features a navy-blue dial in a rose gold case with curved, two-tier lugs. This combination has a vintage feel but at the same time is decidedly modern. The Reference 5224R’s 24-hour
Chronometro Pocket Watch, 1905
display allows enhanced legibility and features Arabic numerals evocative of a bygone era. On the watch’s dial, local time and home time are marked by two center hands turning on a 24- hour circle. In a twist on tradition, noon is placed at the 12 o’clock position on the 24-hour display. This allows for greater legibility during daylight hours. The watch does not require the correction pushers that are traditionally placed on the left side of the case, because both the home and local time can be set using the crown. A small seconds subdial at the 6 o’clock position completes the display features. Ref. 5524R - Complications 27 FOURTANÉ MAGAZINE
The new Calatrava 4997/200R is fitted with the Patek Philippe ultra-thin self-winding caliber 240 movement, allowing the watch to have a slim and feminine profile.
Patek Philippe developed a new self-winding movement for the 5224R-001. The new caliber 31-260 PS FUS 24H contains 240 parts and has a 48-hour power reserve. Patek Philippe was awarded three new patents for the caliber: its dual-time mechanism utilizing three crown positions was granted a Swiss patent, as were its linear time zones spring and inertial delta. The Calatrava Self-Winding 4997/200R
The new Calatrava 4997/200R’s design is a prime example of refined elegance. The exquisite purple color of the watch’s dial and matching strap immediately draws attention to this decidedly feminine timepiece. The dial is embossed with a concentric wave pattern reminiscent of the Art Nouveau era. More than 50 layers of purple lacquer are applied over the patterned dial, creating an exceptional
Ref. 4997/200R-Calatrava
richness and depth, as well as an eye-catching play of light. The wave pattern radiates outward, drawing the eye towards the rose gold bezel, which is set with 76 internally flawless diamonds. Of course, the new purple 4997/200R’s beauty is more than skin-deep. The 35mm timepiece is fitted with the Patek Philippe ultra-thin self-winding caliber 240 movement, allowing the watch to have a slim and feminine profile. Reference 5905R Flyback Chronograph Annual Calendar
With its curved lugs, the Reference 5905R Flyback Chronograph Annual Calendar’s rose gold case harkens back to the 1950’s. The rich gold case is complemented by a blue sunburst dial, with baton-style hour markers and dauphine hands fashioned in art deco style. Calendar watches are perennially an important pillar of Patek Philippe watchmaking. A calendar watch is a true tool watch, providing a valuable function applicable to the wearer’s everyday life. Indicating the day, date, and month, the annual calendar in the 5905R requires adjustment only once a year, at the end of February.
Ref. 5905R-Flyback Chrongraph Annual Calendar 28 FOURTANÉ MAGAZINE
Chronographs are highly popular among Patek Philippe collectors and aficionados. Unlike most traditional chronographs, the 5905R’s second hand operates from the center of the dial, and the hour counter is placed at the 6 o’clock position. This configuration allows for a clean-looking dial with ample space in the upper half for the calendar apertures. The apertures’ side-by-side positioning allows the day, date, and month to be read easily at a glance. The 5905R’s caliber CH 28-520 QA 24H chronograph mechanism features a central column wheel for its control functions. Patek Philippe introduced a pilot watch into the Calatrava collection. While the timepiece itself was new, its design was inspired by the watches the brand had crafted for pilots in the 1930s. In true pilot watch style, the Calatrava Pilot has an oversized crown, a design element of early

that makes it possible to to set the time while wearing gloves. Several versions of the Calatrava Pilot have been introduced since the initial timepiece, including one with a Travel Time function. The 5924G-010 has both a Chronograph and Travel Time function, a first for the Pilot collection. A khaki-green dial further enhances the Calatrava Pilot Travel Time Chronograph’s retro look. Oversized numerals indicating the hours and the watch’s sword-shaped hands complete its vintage-style character.
Ref. 5924G - 010
The dial’s skeletonized hour hand indicates the home time, while the solid hand displays the local time. The date display at 12 o’clock corresponds to the local time, and the 60-minute chronograph counter subdial is at the 6 o’clock position. A second version of the new Pilot Travel Time Chronograph features a blue-gray dial and strap. Both these new watches are powered by the self-winding caliber CH 28-250 C FUS with a flyback chronograph. 29 FOURTANÉ MAGAZINE
PRIME TIME With the introduction of exciting new styles, Tudor’s ladies’ watches are designed to do the job of keeping time, and look beautiful while doing so. It’s part of the Tudor heritage.
A
nyone who thinks Tudor just makes rugged watches for sporty men like soccer legend David Beckham, one of the company’s biggest fans and a brand ambassador, think again. Tudor has quietly, and
pretty much since its beginnings, produced watches for women. Not just today’s oh-so-popular unisex or genderless watches, which usually have a rather functional and classic air to them and are made to appeal to anyone’s taste. But watches that are decidedly feminine, with gold and diamonds and the glimmer of opaline, and sized as small as 26 mm to fit comfortably and attractively on a slender wrist. Tudor has several collections of watches that have been unapologetically designed for women, but with the same hitech promise of reliability combined with surprising affordability that have always been the hallmark of the brand’s production. Then and now, there are new designs in store in time for Mother’s Day, graduations, weddings, or any occasion that requires a very special, lasting, indeed timeless, gift to commemorate it. Hans Wilsdorf, a German businessman and some would say visionary, famously started Tudor watches in 1926 after establishing the iconic Rolex brand. "For some years now I

have been considering the idea of making a
watch that our agents could sell at a more modest price than our Rolex watches, and yet one that could attain the standards of dependability for which Rolex is famous,” he said. “I decided to form a separate company, with the object of making and marketing this new watch. It is called the Tudor Watch Company." The singular timepiece that put Tudor on the horological map, introduced nearly 70 years ago, in 1954, was the Submariner, a rugged, hefty, hardworking timepiece so reliable that various navies throughout the world, including the United States, adopted it for their use. But Tudor also produced watches for women as far back as the 1930s. They were designed to do the job of keeping time but looking beautiful while doing 30 FOURTANÉ MAGAZINE

In 2017 the Clair de Rose was born, incorporating a mechanical movement with highly refined design. so. Collections such as Princess, Glamour, 1926 and Miss Tudor were released, in sizes as small as 26 mm. Clair de Rose remains one of the most popular women’s lines. The watch comes with a date function and carries about 38 hours of power reserve. The watch offers a choice of three sizes, with corresponding calibres: calibre T601 in the 34mm models and T201 in the 26 and 30mm editions. In the years since its introduction, the Clair de Rose has been available in a variety of colors, sizes and materials. The latest iteration streamlines the choice of material to one modern, sleek option: stainless steel. Other characteristics of the Clair de Rose remain: the steel screw-down winding crown, set with a blue spinel cabochon and the smooth steel bezel with a polished finish. There are other choices as well that provide the possibility to personalize the Clair de Rose for each woman wearing it. The shimmering opaline dial, delicately decorated with designs in relief, can sport blue lacquered Roman numerals, or eight of the numbers can be replaced with diamonds. The Clair de Rose references 35800, 35500 and 35200 come in six different designs presented in a case with a polished finish that is available in three sizes: 26, 30 and 34mm in diameter. For women who want a watch that will stand up to year-round, 24/7 wearing, each watch is waterproof to a depth of 100 metres. Lastly, there is a choice of straps: steel with the small “rice grain” links that have traditionally graced the collection, classic black leather or a unique jacquard fabric made by a 150year-old family firm in the Saint-Étienne region of France using traditional weaving techniques. NEW WATCHES FOR 2023
Women who enjoy active sports can still turn to Tudor’s signature creations, like the Black Bay, Tudor’s first diver’s watch, introduced in 2012. The new Black Bay 54 pays homage to the original, but with new features. The 37mm steel case is sized for women or men, the calibre is produced in house, the depth rating is 200 meters, and there is a choice of bracelet, either steel link or black rubber. Above, top and bottom: Tudor Clair de Rose 32 FOURTANÉ MAGAZINE
The slim 11.24mm-thick case profile makes it quite comfortable to wear with the T-Fit clasp, available on both the bracelet and rubber strap versions. And with an eye on the growing interest of women in fine watchmaking, Tudor released new versions of the Tudor Royal in sophisticated new color palettes. The dials now come in radial-brushed salmon or chocolate brown, with applied Roman numeral hour markers or with eight diamond hour markers combined with four Roman numerals. The new choices join the existing options of dial colors, bracelets, case sizes ranging from 28mm to 41mm, and bezels—including one set with 60 diamonds—and offer New Tudor Black Bay 54

y luck or by fate, Roberto Coin began life in the perfect place to pursue his passion. The company he founded in 1977, which still bears his name, is headquartered in his birthplace: Vicenza, the Italian city famed the world over for its gold and jewelry.
Today, the Roberto Coin name is credited with more than 45 years of history-making concepts and creations, and has become synonymous with inventive and timeless jewelry design. The history of the Roberto Coin company is marked by innovation, but the driving force behind the creation of the jewels has always been one man: Roberto himself. Known for his innate appreciation of color, style, and texture, he gives himself over completely to his passion — designing jewelry that entices women. It’s the unique and individual beauty of women, he says, that inspires him to please their whims through his work. In 1978, his company was the first to use three-color gold, which rapidly became de rigueur in fashion capitals around the globe. Ten years later, Roberto Coin was the first to work with high-quality two-color gold, and in 1990, the first to bring satin and silk finishes back into style. When Coin introduced a white gold collection in 1992, it met with skepticism in the trade but soon became a fashion must-have. And in 1998, the company

Love in Verona strengthens the bond between Roberto Coin and the Italian cities that inspire him. The collection’s simple, contemporary look conveys a soul as ancient as eternal love. The Roberto Coin Venetian Princess Collection is exceptional. The design of these jewels hides a complex structure made of twisted wire, visible only to those who wear them. This allure of mystery serves as a reminder of Venice, famous for its countless legends and secrets passed from generation to generation. Duchessa: Italian for duchess, evokes a glorious past. The Collection showcases traditional craftsmanship, artful tributes with diamonds enhancing beauty and features open link bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and rings in 18K gold. It’s here, from this corner, where a lasting, multi-generational family business took root in the community, and grew to become a singular global destination for collectors and connoisseurs alike. “When we got here, all we had was each other,” reflects John,

And by supporting the people and partners that supported us, we arrived at a place that we never could have imagined — especially when you look back at the original postcard that called us here,” he finishes with a smile. “And just like our original cross-country dream, and then to the estate John in the original Fourtane store.

MONTEREY CLASSIC CAR WEEK, AUGUST 9-16, 2024 CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE, AUGUST 18, 2024
WHAT YOU’LL SEE Long recognized as one of the top automobile shows in the world, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is an exhibition of 200 or so of the best collector cars in the world. Most are privately owned, while a handful are on loan from museums. The action happens on the 18th fairway at Pebble Beach Golf Links and the areas surrounding it. Spectators can look forward to a showcase that includes antiques dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries such as the Locomobile Steamer. Then there are the hand-built cars from between the two World Wars, such as the Dusenberg from Indiana. Concepts for the future — the next sleek Aston Martin perhaps-- are also part of the lineup. Turn up your style with sparkling gemstone jewelry!
October Opal january garnet
The commonly warm red gemstone comes in various hues including green. It’s believed to bolster willpower and persistence – and who couldn’t use an extra dose of both when it comes to sticking to New Year’s resolutions? We think a gorgeous pair of Elizabeth Gage green garnet earrings would be the perfect reminder to not give up.
July RUBY
April DIAMOND
Signifying invincibility, integrity and logical actions, diamonds are an April girl’s best friend. And it wouldn’t hurt to sparkle up your wardrobe with an Art Deco diamond bracelet from the 1930’s boasting over 16 carats of multi-cut diamonds.
Its fiery red hue radiates vitality and passion — not just for July babies, but for anyone on the rise to fame and fortune. Let this arabesque ruby ring by Geoffrey Good be the spark to create the life of your dreams.
Opal, derived from the Greek, opallious, means to see a change of color. Consider wearing these kaleidoscopic-hued gems as a talisman for finding perspective from wherever you stand. Our impressive 31.30 carat Lightning Ridge opal pendant exhibits strong flashes of color, displaying green, blue, yellow, red and orange. One could become lost in the brilliance!
February Amethyst
The February-born can call upon this stone’s serene shades of violet as an amulet to enhance intuition and the clarity of mind to see you through almost any situation. May we suggest accessorizing with a Victorian amethyst drop necklace made in England, circa 1880s.
November Topaz MAY emerald
A gorgeous asset to any jewelry box, this deep green sparkler can bring other advantages. It’s thought to be a magnet for love and prosperity. So why not wear a pair of Simon G. emerald stud earrings as your talisman.
March Aquamarine
June Pearl Alexandrite
If your motto isn’t “Go with the flow,” let this watercolor gem serve as a reminder. It’s an attitude that can enhance your ability to get stuff done in a calm and peaceful manner. Maybe your new workday look should include this 23.93 carat marquiseshaped aquamarine with pink sapphires by Robert Procop.
This alternative birthstone known as “an emerald by day, a ruby by night,” the Alexandrite is a fascinating gemstone with the unique characteristic of changing color from a brownish green to a red hue, depending on the light. Symbolic of joy and good fortune, may we suggest this 4.73 carat alexandrite and diamond ring by Robert Procop.
August Peridot/ Spinel
This alternative birthstone for August is believed to ease anger and promote harmony and found in a wealth of colors. This pink spinel pendant by JB Star would be a harmonious addition to any décolleté.
November babies can choose between two warm and sunny gemstones thought to attract positive energy and luck to those who wear them. The imperial topaz pendant is sure to bring positivity while boasting 21.52 carats while adorned by diamonds and moonstones.
September Sapphire
December Tanzanite/Turquoise
Associated with deep spirituality, perhaps because of their heavenly hue, sapphires have come to signify loyalty, sincerity, and integrity. We suggest the Twister Luxe bracelet by Carolina Bucci, featuring a rainbow of sapphires.
Giving new meaning to the winter blues is having your pick of two gorgeous gems. Plus each offers an extra helping of power and protection. No one should underestimate the power of the turquoise serpent!
