Partnering with cyclist Fabian Cancellara, winner of multiple Olympic and World Championships, Swiss watchmaker TUDOR brings its founding daring spirit to the professional cycling world.

W

hen it comes to the world of professional cycling, Fabian Cancellara, 42, is undoubtedly among the most celebrated and accomplished names. The Swiss road cyclist won gold in the Olympic time trial event in Beijing in 2008, and again in 2016 in Rio, before officially retiring from competitive biking.

But today, Cancellara is making a comeback of sorts.

He’s the latest star athlete to join the TUDOR Pro Cycling team, a cadre of talented men who are regarded globally as the top in the sport.

Cancellara was born in the Canton of Bern in Switzerland, where he lives now with his wife, Stefanie, Fabian Cancellara and their two daughters.

Well before his Olympic medals, he broke multiple records and amassed a long lineup of awards. He has won time trials, road and stage races, and classics including the Milan–San Remo, the Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders three times, and the opening stage of the Tour de France five times.

His impressively toned physique has earned him the nickname Spartacus, but he discovered cycling at age 13, when he found an old bike in the garage at home.

As he wrote in his official Olympic bio, “It completely changed my life. I realized that I had been closed off in a box; nature suddenly opened my eyes to new aspirations. I threw myself and my body into road racing. The Swiss mountain roads are the most beautiful in the world.” At 19, he began his professional career.

Cancellara’s loyalists include his more than 300,000 22

Instagram followers. Young children who aspire to race competitively also look to him as the impetus to push them ahead. That role has motivated him to encourage a new generation of elite cyclists through projects like Kids on Wheels, which promotes biking in Switzerland for children between the ages of six and thirteen.

For the famous athlete’s latest exploit, he has joined a team that was established in 2022 and has the press buzzing. A recent Hodinkee.com article described TUDOR Pro Cycling as the most ambitious and daring team in the sport.

Their runaway inaugural season in the Continental category saw the team crowned with an impressive 16 victories and 30 podiums. TUDOR Pro Cycling’s Robin Froidevaux was awarded the Swiss champion in elite road racing, Nils Brun snagged the title of U23 Swiss champion, and Fabian Weiss earned the U23 Time Trial Swiss championship title.

For the 2023 season, a crop of 15 new riders has joined the five returning team members. TUDOR Pro Cycling is honored to welcome back home talented Swiss rider Sebastien Reichenbach, and two Scandinavian road racing champs, Lukas Eriksson of Sweden and Denmark’s Alexander Kamp.

This season, the team will be competing in both the Continental and ProTeam levels (designations of the UCI, or Union Cycliste International). And with Cancellara onboard, they’re well poised to keep the accolades coming—not only this season, but in the many seasons that lie ahead.

The new Breitling Premier B01 Chronograph 42 delivers a timeless elegance that is steeped in the history of aviation.

reitling, the luxury Swiss watch company, has made a name for itself as a champion of the chronograph — the watch that stars on the wrists of the world’s most beautiful people, like brand ambassadors Trevor Lawrence and Charlize Theron. And now the watch brand has launched six new models of its iconic Premier chronograph, presenting a new Premier league of timepieces that are as good-looking as they are reliable.

The chronograph is one of the watch world’s most useful designs. At its most basic level, it displays the time while also acting as a stopwatch. Generations of the Breitling family, from founder Leon to his son Gaston and grandson Willy, have invented and patented refinements and complications to the chronograph, becoming acknowledged leaders in the industry.

During WWII, Breitling’s reputation for expertise and reliability was called upon to provide aircraft instruments and tool watches for the British Royal Air Forces. By definition, tool watches, as these functional timepieces are known, need to be big, solid, and secure. A forward-thinking Willy Breitling, who had taken over the family firm in 1932, when he was only 19, envisioned a time when these hefty, super-useful watches would be worn off the battlefield, out of the cockpit and in peacetime — if they retained their same function but were made to be slimmer, more attractive, even elegant. He wanted this reimagined chronograph to be the best that Breitling had to offer—the best materials, best finishes and best calibers. In 1943, he unveiled the first of the best, the Premier.

Breitling Premier In that same year, Breitling paid homage to its Premier Chronograph, 1943 collection by launching the Premier Heritage Chronograph collection, including two additional chronographs with added complications, the Duograph and the Datora. The line captured Willy Breitling’s intent for his watches to express “the unmistakable stamp of impeccable taste.” Once again, the superior functionality of the chronograph was combined with the classic, refined attractiveness of a dress watch.

And now, to celebrate the Premier’s 80th birthday, Breitling is once again paying homage to the best of the best by bringing out six new models, the Premier B01 Chronograph 42. The new releases all share a handsome, vintage-inspired design, a 42mm case, a power reserve of approximately 70 hours, and water resistance up to 100 meters. Plus, they all have Super Lumin-Nova® luminescent hour and minute hands.

One of the most important qualities of these new models is that they all contain Breitling’s Manufacture Caliber 01. Only a handful of independent watch companies make their own movements, and the Breitling Caliber 01, invented in 2009, is considered one of the most precise in the industry. It received the prestigious COSC certification for accuracy within -4 and +6 seconds a day. (COSC is the official Swiss testing institute responsible for certifying the accuracy and precision of Swiss watches.) The Caliber 01 was redesigned last year to be slimmer, with a more compact oscillating weight; the attractive results can be viewed through the watch’s transparent sapphire crystal caseback.

In addition to the stringent COSC testing, Breitling conducts its own in-house tests to confirm that the new Premier B01 Chronograph 42 can withstand an incredible 60,000 shocks at 500G, 100,000 crown winds, 3,456,000 oscillating weight turns and 5,840 start-stop-reset clicks on its pusher.

It’s undeniable that the Premier can stand up to whatever punishment an average customer puts it through (and then some). That it will do so with the smooth style, vintage appeal and timeless good looks of a luxury dress watch is just as certain. The proof can be seen immediately: the new releases offer a selection of striking colors for the dial that give an edge to the stainless steel casings. The new color choices are salmon, blue, green, black and cream, each with tone-on-tone chronograph counters. There’s also a choice of a black, goldbrown, or brown alligator leather strap, or a stainless steel seven-row bracelet.

Another new Premier 01 Chronograph 42 is a stunning 18-Karat red-gold model with a cream dial, which also comes with tone-on-tone chronograph counters. This model has either a brown alligator leather strap or an 18-Karat gold seven-row bracelet.

The Premier is widely regarded as one of the world’s great timepieces—a watch that married its Breitling Premier B01 functional wartime genesis with a contemporary Chronograph in 18K red-gold sense of style. The Premier brings professional-level performance to an attractive watch that can be worn anywhere, informal or formal, day or night. A new book commemorates this important development in watches, and celebrates the Premier’s birthday. “Premier Story” is part of the “Watch Stories” series available on watchprint.com. To write it, descendant Gregory Breitling chose Fred Mandelbaum, Breitling’s official brand historian and the world’s foremost collector of Premier watches, and gave him unparalleled access to the family archives — the photos and papers that bring the story of this remarkable watch alive.

PRX-TRAORDINARY From a chronograph to a stunning new ice blue colorway, Tissot’s PRX collection continues to embody the perfect blend of form and function.

F

or more than 165 years, Tissot has dedicated itself to creating watches that look and feel elevated without compromising performance. This is evident throughout the brand’s history of water-resistant timepieces equipped with patented stainless steel cases. While Tissot’s work in this realm can be traced back to the 1930s, a pivotal moment came in 1952. That year, Tissot registered the name “Seastar” to designate a new generation of waterproof timekeepers. These models featured the brand’s hermetically sealed case while maintaining the elegance of the brand’s DNA. The Seastar collection evolved, with the Seastar Special PR 516 debuting in 1965. New ad campaigns promoted the model as being “particularly robust” and notable for its “precision and resistance,” thanks to a new floating movement and enhanced shock absorption. The Seastar Special PR 516 — in both name and design — would be the forerunner for the PRX collection.

DEBUT OF THE ORIGINAL PRX COLLECTION Tissot Seastar 1965

Tissot introduced its PRX collection in 1978. The PRX marked the next generation of the Seastar, with classic sport-watch design cues that were emblematic of the era.

The collection was characterized by a slender, flat, barrelshaped case, with a wide, horizontal link bracelet that was fully integrated. By the next decade, Tissot had officially registered the PRX name, landing on the denotation “Precise and Robust.” The “X” represented the Roman numeral 10, for the collection’s water resistance of 10 ATM (100 meters). But the PRX’s run was short-lived, and it would be another 40 years until the beloved PRX finally returned to Tissot’s catalog.

RETURN OF THE PRX Tissot PRX 1978 In 2020, Tissot welcomed a new CEO, Sylvain Dolla, who sought to reestablish the company’s brand identity in the 21st century. To do so, Dolla looked back to Tissot’s roots and discovered the PRX collection in the archives. Revitalizing the PRX a year later marked a key moment in establishing Tissot’s modern footprint within the industry.

The Powermatic 80 movement boasts 80 hours of power reserve, which is enough to continue telling time accurately even if the watch is not worn for three days.

The contemporary reincarnation of the PRX launched in February 2021. It fully embodied the spirit of the 1970s sports watch, with its classic barrel-shaped case and horizontal link bracelet. But it also boasted a larger, more contemporary sizing of 40mm, and a dial with a sunburst finish rather than the original version’s waffle texture.

BIRTH OF THE PRX POWERMATIC 80

The reintroduction of the PRX was such a huge success that Tissot released a second variation just a few months later, with a major update. For the first time, the brand introduced a mechanical movement into the PRX, in place of quartz. This new caliber — called the Powermatic 80 — gave the line a new name: the PRX Powermatic 80.

THE PRX AUTOMATIC CHRONOGRAPH

In 2022, Tissot continued to expand the PRX Powermatic 80 family, adding the The Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 first-ever chronograph variation to the collection. To accommodate the enhanced functionality of the chronograph mechanism, this model has slightly larger 42mm proportions, while retaining the sleek, angular form of the 1970s sports watch. Tissot offers it in two variations: the first with an iconic panda dial showcasing a silver backdrop with black chronograph registers, and the second with a bold blue base for the dial and contrasting white subdials.

Both iterations are rendered in a combination of polished and satin-finish stainless steel, from the case to the signature integrated bracelet. The “Panda” version has a touch of elegance in its rose-gold-plated hands and indices, giving it a more refined two-tone look. Both models showcase a classic three-register The Tissot PRX Automatic Chronograph “Panda” layout, as well as a date window tucked between four and five o’clock. In addition, you get an extended 60-hour power reserve thanks to the Valjoux A05.H31 caliber, which is visible in all its glory through the exhibition caseback.

THE BRAND-NEW PRX POWERMATIC 80 ICE BLUE

For 2023, Tissot has added a stunning new dial color to the lineup: ice blue.

This eye-catching hue, reminiscent of a crisp alpine morning, is the ideal color as we head into the winter months. It looks just as striking in either the more contemporary 40mm variation or the all-new 35mm iteration, which brings back the original proportions of the first PRX from 1978 and has a distinctly vintage look and feel.

Both sizes have a meticulously 35mm PRX Powermatic 80 Ice Blue sculpted stainless steel case with both polished and satin finishes. In addition, the watches’ applied indices are coated with Super-LumiNova, which beautifully embellishes the dial’s surface — particularly in the new ice-blue colorway. Each model comes with a beveled and applied date window at three o’clock, an engraved crown, and a satin-finish steel bracelet with a triple-blade folding clasp. Of course, every PRX Powermatic 80 watch offers up to 10 ATM (100 meters) of water resistance. And inside, you’ll find the Swiss-made Powermatic 80 movement, which is fitted with a Nivachron balance hairspring for enhanced precision and performance and provides an impressive 80-hour power reserve.

used to be that if a woman wanted a piece of jewelry she had to wait until someone gifted her with it. It could be for her birthday, or Valentine’s Day, for her graduation or her anniversary.

These days women aren’t waiting anymore. “If I see it and I want it, I buy it,” says a lawyer in Rio de Janeiro, typical of the thinking today.

And the occasion for treating herself may be a promotion or a divorce or simply because, as one editor in Tokyo says, “I work hard and I deserve it.”

According to a study conducted by the market-research firm Mintel of jewelry purchases in the U.S., more than half of women surveyed who purchased jewelry did so to treat themselves.

One reason behind the shift is that more women are working, making their own money and feeling they can spend it how they see fit. In fact, according to Forbes.com, women now control over $20 trillion in annual consumer spending globally. They are transforming the marketplace, and that includes jewelry.

And they aren’t buying trinkets.

One jeweler we interviewed in Pittsburgh reported a female executive buying a piece of 42

diamond jewelry that cost in the six figures, while another jeweler in Atlanta said her female customers buying for themselves usually spend couple of thousand dollars. As with all jewelry purchases, the amount spent is based on income, so as more women rise the corporate ladder and earn higher salaries, the price spent on fine jewelry increases as well.

Many women see the purchase of fine jewelry as an investment, as much of a part of their financial portfolio as buying stocks, bonds or real estate.And many woman find justification for an expensive jewelry purchase in the realization that they can always pass along a valuable piece as part of their inheritance.

Says one New York City mother, “I have two daughters and I’ve picked out the pieces they will inherit. Some belonged to my mother.”

But perhaps a Parisian fashion designer we spoke to best expressed the one most compelling reason for a woman to buy jewelry for herself. “ You’ll get exactly the jewelry that you want.”
