DOBBIES GARDEN CENTRES Dobbies is one of the UK’s largest garden centre retailers, with 26 stores across Scotland, England and Northern Ireland. The centres generally offer a range of plants, outdoor and indoor furniture,
traditional tearoom and restaurant. Dobbies was acquired by Tesco in 2008 and the projects that draw were involved in, were not affected by the takeover. I was instrumental in providing
gardening tools and equipment, toys, pet care items, retail concessions, a farm foodhall, deli bar,
technical project support at Ian Burke Associates across the Dobbies Garden Centre projects. This support included detail design and development, technical coordination of design team members, contractors and manufacturers, technical package creation, maintenance and management as well as coordinating and ensuring a smooth and efficient workflow between all project team members.

TESCO ECO STORE, DUMFRIES Tesco’s Dumfries eco store, completed in May 2009, was a technical design exercise in developing and detailing a prefabricated modular system, for Tesco’s first ‘full’ environmental store in Scotland. This design was to improve upon Tesco’s increasing ‘green credentials’ and to meet with their fast track construction programmes, and at the same time reflect the company’s evolving brand. Being a first in the country, the project required a bespoke set of construction details that I designed and detailed throughout the store. This store is a move away from the traditional steel portal frame, and is a composite structure comprising timber columns and beams to retail side, and steel frame in back-of-house.

On approach down a ramp to the entrance door, the fin walls frame a splendid view through the entrance door and one window, giving one a glimpse of what the remainder of the house holds. The entrance is the pivotal point, where the strong visual axis defines the separation between public and private.
