October was an exceptionally dry month with communities living around the parks becoming increasingly desperate as the dry weather continued. As a result poaching for bush meat escalated as did the intrusion of livestock into the Parks and Reserves. The teams recovered a large number of snares (493), noting that there was a sudden increase in the incidence of cable snares targeting elephants. Two separate teams assisted in the treatment of elephants with large heavy-duty cable snares on their front legs. One elephant is recovering well as the snare was removed early, the other unfortunately died three days after treatment due to severe damage to the tendons in his front leg. Four other cable snares have been recovered whilst two elephant carcasses were located outside the park boundaries with cable snares caught around them and their tusks already removed. Teams also reported a rise in poisoned arrow incidences and the use of a more effective poison. A total of seven elephant carcasses were visited on the ground having died from expected arrow poisoning, one leaving a young calf that was rescued. Teams have also assisted in a large number of treatments alongside the DSWT/KWS Amboseli and Tsavo vets. During the month 27 illegal grazers were captured. Illegal grazing of cattle has been a particular challenge as the cattle are pushed into the park whilst the herder leaves the area and waits for the cattle to return home in the evening. The Mtito team also succeeded in capturing 3 bush-meat poachers and an ivory poacher. The DSWT anti-poaching teams, accompanied by KWS rangers, have been active this month with two teams (Tiva and Ziwani) going on a short break whilst all others were on full duty
