Brown field site flanked by a Neo-Gothic Church, modernist School and 1950s two storey Dwellings
Solution:
Conceptually there was a desire to strike a balance between the banality of the three and two story red brick buildings to the north and the neo-gothic style of the black church. An idea about gable ended houses spurred a drawing which mirrors the rhythm of crenulations of the black church. The pitched roofs also convey a residential attitude similar to its neighbours to the north.

Billboard Facade The complex must participate in city life and avoid isolating itself as special or architectural. The complex needs to be consumed by the city. Around Dublin we often see a gable wall adorned with a billboard. These expansive spaces are prime commercial real estate and often are in prime urban locations. The facades myriad of posters is in constant flux. Rotating from Summer blockbusters to the christmas Oscar season. The facade also borrows from the graphic design of the zeitgeist, thus keeping it fashionable. These A0 type posters we see around the city wholly promote cinema, theatre, music performances, pantomime and exhibitions. This cultural promotion is to be encouraged.

Solution:
The project as part of Dublin Parking Day 2013, sees a carpark space converted into a public space. The projects typology was manifested by absorbing the essence of the street; an Arcade, Architecture School and Artists collective. The scheme sees the construction of a plywood box, enclosed on all sides. Inside, an arcade dance machine.

Solution:
Danteum Dame Street (title of project) sees Dublins tower of Babel adapted to shelter the seven deadly sins of Modern Ireland. The project seeks to install a varied program on each of the banks seven floors which correlate with the seven deadly sins, as listed in Dante’s journey through Purgatory in his work The Divine comedy. Danteum Dame street will strip the bank to its two cores. The re-patronised floor areas are filled with an interior architecture and, through subtle manipulation of the envelope define seven modes of Irish sin. The construction methods and materials used are those of the Occupy Dame Street protests. The project is disciplined by the movements practical and utilitarian construction and assembly. The material palette is therefore limited to plywood sheets and lengths of 2x4.

Polictical and cultural criticisim aside, this project demonstrates the inherent flexibility of the bank’s architecture, and shows how with minimal means there is potential for this building to have a truly polyvalent future.

Wrath sees the relocation of the Joe Duffy “LiveLine” studio. The floor is comprised of two main elements. Firstly there is the studio and background services. At the centre of the plan is Joe, who sits at the head of a circular table. The studio has an irregular glazing system for acoustic reasons. Opposite Joe is the production room. The East core contains a private room for Joe which has its own access by elevator. Secondly, a new concept for Live-line, a live call in. The concept is that the public can ascend the West tower, tell their miscarriage of justice to researchers, then the researchers consider that individual for the live show, if accepted they can proceed from the waiting rooms in the West to phone booths orientated towards Joe. Here they have the unique opportunity to relay their anger to Joe live.

Lust is a strip club. The club is defined by a catwalk which bridges the East and West cores. It’s flanked by seating areas for groups which are bordered by a bar with individual stools to encourage single men to visit the club. It was important to accommodate for this demographic as it can be discouraging for individuals when forced to sit in group oriented seating. A bar stool allows for individuality while feeling part of a larger collective. The East core houses the dancers, the South of this core provides a theatrical dressing room space that celebrates beauty and satisfies the vanity of the girls. The North of the core is a place for the individual dancer, perhaps after a hard shift, it’s somewhere to wash alone. Surrounding the West core are private rooms for private dances, accommodating groups of up to eight. The glazing has been removed on the South-East of the plan to create a smoking terrace.

Gluttony is an all you can eat Buffet. The Buffet needed to be maximum, high density. Its floor area is filled to capacity with tables and chairs. Once exiting the elevators from the West core, consumers are fed through aisles where they collect their cutlery and trays. Once equipped with the necessary tools to aid consumption they’re propelled forward into the buffet. The buffet offers a variety of fast food. It’s an all you can eat system, this encourages consumers to eat more than they actually want due to two illusions; value for money and beating the system. The buffet has small plates which encourages the ritual of piling as much food as possible on your limited area. The buffet is replenished by the East core which contains a kitchen and cold room.

This space finally gives a place for people to wait, watch and meet, while at the same time being sheltered from the Irish weather. The Outdoor room references Limbo, described as an anti-chamber before Hell. Limbo is a place where the non-believers are contained, it’s a place of loitering and discussion. Creating seven spaces for Irish sin at the epicentre of the city should manage to attract the same amount of negative association as it presently does as the headquarters of Bank regulators. In Dante’s Purgatory souls that were trapped on a level of sin could ascend and be forgiven if they could manage to conquer their sin. It is crucial that we as a society can acknowledge our demons and attempt to reform ourselves. For too long in our past have we ignored our baser instincts. Now it is time to atone, indulge and prevail. (x) outdoor room

Greed is a Bookmaker. Bookies are usually small places, with small footprints, however if you combine all of the footprints of bookies you would find on any main street in Ireland you’ll have a footprint equal to that of Central Banks Bookmakers. The East core contains staff facilities and a safe room to the North of the core. The West of the core is a large till space to place bets and occasionally reap rewards. Natural light needed to be totally eliminated from the plan, this drove the design of shutters which disguise themselves as monitor mounts and bench facilities. Surrounding the Eastern core are smoking areas, these are places of escape and reflection after a bet has gone wrong.

Sloth sees the establishment of a new intensive grind school for State Examinations. This new establishment seeks to feed lecture notes to procrastinating students. 600 points, six classrooms, everything here is points driven. At the epicentre of the plan is an alter supporting four photocopiers. In the East core is the staff room, to the East of that core is the notes archive which has all relevant notes for Senior and Junior certificates and an unsurpassed subscription to all “Less stress more success” publications. In the Western core are toilets and to the West of that, relaxation space, somewhere to procrastinate once you’ve finished copying those notes. The six class rooms all offer very distracting views of Dublin, the serious work gets done on the copier alter.

Envy creates public screens which project images of the fluctuating top eight wealthiest Irish. This floor acts as a permanent temple and record keeper to the top eight wealthiest people in Ireland. The glazing is pulled right back to the centre, only protecting the projections against the harsh climate. Once visitors exit the West tower they are ushered to the right and forced in a promenade around the eight faces. The East core houses the caretaker of the screens. Their job is to maintain the slide projectors, to catalogue and archive and to develop celluloid slides of new record breakers. This is done in the darkroom in the South of the core. The eight projectors are serviced by a central spine, each projector has its own screen.

Pride is an exhibition of Loyalist and Republican murals. Murals seen on gable walls in Belfast will be recreated on screens in the top and deadliest floor, Pride. The screens oppose each other, stare at each other. Visitors are invited to ramble through and examine the works. Each core is empty apart from its shafts.

Solution:
The experience of the building is not based on walls, floors and windows but on people, activities and the senses. The success of the building is ultimately dependant on the happiness of the children who go there. In a way we had to think of the project as a primitive drawing by a child that he or she presents to his parents after school – expressing emotions of joy and a celebration of childhood.

Internship:
Monadnock Architects, Rotterdam. Design ethos: “Only the hardest rock remains”.
Tasks:
My main work flow was 3Dmodelling and testing design proposals, once a design was settled on I rendered the model in Artlantis and finalised the image in Photoshop. Along with computer drawings I was intensely involved with physical model making. I constructed these in a variety of ways from foam-card composites to intricate laser cut models.
Hotel:
I have included here images I produced for a paper project the firm was asked to participate in. I worked on the scheme from concept to realisation. Finally the project was presented to AIR (architectuurcentrum van Rotterdam). The model,(bottom left) was an existing project in the office which I was asked to produce a retrospective model of. The model was laser cut in a local studio. It was the first model to be made using this technology in the office and I was tasked with its construction.

Historic Georgian Terrace comprised of six townhouses.
Solution:
The project makes two moves. Firstly the restoration of a derelict Georgian terrace. Secondly the addition of a subterranean floor, an underground for Dublin. From here the user can orientate and navigate to the restored Georgian fabric suspended overhead.

Solution:
The project was undertaken in an effort to earn money. The competition requests a cardboard floor display to house 42 packs of coffee. The project treats the display like a tower therefore it needs a plinth, a body and a pinnacle. Its a poche strategy of layered card around two structural cores.

The Pitch box is located on the O’Connell street Taxi Rank. In the enclosure people are invited to pitch a story, these stories are then sent to the voting booths at the Hugh Lane Gallery. Here people are invited to “Like” or “Dislike” the stories. The stories deemed entertaining, are collated into a 90 minute movie.On saturday, at the Garden of remembrance the film is screened at a temporary cinema. The screen is erected in the cruciform pool, with the steps acting as an auditorium.

Renewing Shengsi Islands

Shengsi Islands, China
Solution:
The projects aims to provide an infrastructure of high and low technology which will enhance and preserve local traditions while supporting a network of activity for adventure seeking tourists. The project offers trippers an odyssey, an adventure through the wilds of Shengsi’s three easterly Islands, Huanglong, Gouqi and Huaniao. The Odyssey is anchored by POD infrastructure, from glider hangers, to wi-fi shacks. PODS are modular buildings of caged rock and steel, each PODS form adapts depending on function. PODS are powered by HUBS which are the nerve centre of each islands POD infrastructure. PODS are located on routes which the tourists will trek, PODS allow them to travel their journey by air, sea and land. The infrastructure is also of benefit to locals, from a bike network offering a free sustainable form of transport, to information PODS lighting up the island coastline as warning beacons for Shengsi’s fishermen. PODS create a network of hardware and software which make Shengsi Islands an adventure park on a herculean scale.
