LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Sixty years ago, in August 1963, the doors to the Davidson County Industrial Education Center opened and the first students began classes at what would become Davidson County Community College two years later. The hard work of Lexington’s Felix Gee, Thomasville’s Doak Finch, and a number of other local education, business and economic development leaders had made it possible to have a local option for higher education. With the formation of the DCCC Foundation in 1968, Davidson County was now home to a powerhouse institution that, by 2023, would boast more than 500,000 alumni, two campuses and a new name to better reflect the two counties it had served for decades. Today, Davidson-Davie Community College is proud to offer opportunities to anyone wishing to pursue additional education or gain new job skills. With more than 40 degree and professionalcertificate programs, in addition to affordable pathways for transfer to four-year schools and dual-enrollment opportunities for high school students, the options are practically endless. And always evolving! Our new Sustainable Agriculture program featured on the cover is just one example of how Davidson-Davie regularly updates and expands offerings to meet the needs of the students and communities we serve. But none of this is possible without the people who have supported us for the past 60 years. This annual report, while a comprehensive record of our many donors over the past fiscal year, gives you only a glimpse into the thousands of people who have been supportive of our mission since 1963. And so we dedicate this year’s annual report not only to those whose names appear in these pages, but to all who have advocated for this college over the last 60 years and have made it possible for us now to look toward the next 60 years of success for our students and the people of Davidson and Davie counties. With much appreciation,

Jenny M. Varner President, Davidson-Davie Community College

Dr. Darrin L. Hartness 1969-2023 In 2018, as part of Davidson County Community College’s nationwide search for its fourth president, community forums were held across Davidson and Davie counties. It had been 15 years, after all, since the college had last searched for its top leader, and college trustees wanted to know what the community was looking for in a new president. Local leaders were invited, including Dr. Darrin L. Hartness, superintendent of Davie County Schools. After the forum in Davie County, Hartness approached George Fouts, a retired community college leader with statewide expertise who was assisting the college trustees with the search. “I’ve been thinking about whether this might be the next step for me,” Hartness told Fouts. “I think you should apply,” Fouts answered. The Board of Trustees announced its selection of Hartness as the college’s fourth president in September of that year, and in January 2019 he took office. Hartness quickly became known as a relationship-builder, drawing on his 28 years of K-12 experience. His knowledge of the state budget process, local governance and the construction of educational facilities translated easily to the community college realm.

“Every day is a gift, and the work that we do together is making a huge difference in the lives of citizens in Davidson and Davie counties and our whole region.” — Dr. Darrin L. Hartness

During his four-and-a-half years as leader, the college officially became Davidson-Davie Community College, better reflecting the two counties it had served for most of its history. The school was one of only four community colleges in the state with steady enrollment throughout the COVID pandemic, and enrollment continues to grow to this day. Two new building projects are under way, and the long-awaited highway improvement project at the Davidson Campus is within reach. Around campus, however, Hartness became best known for promoting a “culture of caring,” with one of his first major initiatives being a day when employees volunteered at a variety of local agencies and organizations, from Smart Start to the Salvation Army.

“Our Day of Service is set aside as a time for our faculty and staff to journey straight to the heart of our community,” he said at the time of the first service day. And in 2023, he added, “I know that each of you will serve with the same care and compassion that’s part of our campus culture, and for that I’m grateful.” The culture of caring was also evident on campus, with regular reminders from Hartness to employees to care for each other and for students, especially during times of political and social unrest and the COVID pandemic. The last time he addressed employees at the opening of a semester, in January 2023, he encouraged the same care and compassion that had become his trademark. “I also ask that you never take anything for granted,” he said. “Know that every student we serve has barriers to their success, and what better place than Davidson-Davie Community College to support students regardless of those barriers?” He closed by remarking, “Every day is a gift, and the work that we do together is making a huge difference in the lives of citizens in Davidson and Davie counties and our whole region.”

03

With deepest gratitude for your support of education and student success This is a comprehensive list of gifts made in tribute to Dr. Darrin L. Hartness, both before and after the June 30, 2023, fiscal year end. The Annual Giving Circles later in this report follow our usual practice of reporting gifts from July 1, 2022 - June 30, 2023. We regret any errors or omissions and ask you to bring them to our attention at Foundation@DavidsonDavie.edu. Achieving the Dream

Davidson-Davie Promotes Community and Caring During Second Day of Service With campus quieter than usual as students enjoyed spring break, Davidson-Davie employees headed out into the community in March 2023 to engage in their second Day of Service, an opportunity to give back to the many agencies and organizations that serve Davidson and Davie counties. “I know that each of you will serve with the same care and compassion that’s part of our campus culture, and for that I’m grateful,” said Dr. Darrin Hartness, addressing faculty and staff in advance of the service day. An initiative of Hartness after he became president of the college, the first Day of Service was held in 2019. Because of COVID, the successful service day could not be repeated again until this year. Like 2019, the 2023 service day included a variety of locations throughout Davidson and Davie counties. Close to 150 employees served at more than 20 separate project sites, including Lexington and Thomasville locations of the Salvation Army, the American Children’s Home, Davie Habitat for Humanity, Davie Smart Start, Davidson Medical Ministries, a number of K-12 schools and the J. Smith Young YMCA in Lexington.

“We are so appreciative to have partners who come together with us to help serve our community.” — Jen Fuller-Allen, CEO of J. Smith Young YMCA

“We are thrilled to have help during Davidson-Davie’s Day of Service,” said Jen Fuller-Allen, CEO of the J. Smith Young YMCA. “The volunteers from the college are helping us complete some muchneeded tasks, and we are so appreciative to have partners who come together with us to help serve our community.” The commitment to service and community actually stretched beyond one day, as faculty and staff worked to replenish the college’s food pantry in the days leading up to the Day of Service and wore lavender ribbons to signal support for colleagues, friends and families dealing with cancer. “Because I grew up in this community, it makes me feel good that I’m able to give back, especially to organizations that have helped me,” said Carmen Davis, director of the Learning Commons at the college, as she helped make fleece blankets for local agencies. “As a single mother, I did have to ask for help sometimes, so it’s good that I’m in a position now to give back to those who supported me.”

Reconnecting with Adult Learners There’s no question that students just graduating from high school make up a big part of the Davidson-Davie campus community, along with those dually-enrolled in both high school and college classes. But part of what makes community colleges special is their ability to serve students of all ages, so adult learners always have had a home at Davidson-Davie. A new effort to focus on the unique needs of adult learners has brought together faculty and staff who work daily to enroll, retain and graduate students who are age 25 and older. Targeted marketing campaigns, course revisions with online adult learners in mind and special events are all part of the initiative. In March, focus groups helped the college learn more about the experiences of adult learners in their coursework, support services and online programming. Students particularly noted the important work of faculty and staff support during the educational journey and also highlighted groups like Phi Theta Kappa and TRiO as important to the overall campus experience. Adult learner efforts now fall under the name of NC Reconnect, with support from the Belk Center at N.C. State, in collaboration with the John M. Belk Endowment. Currently, 68 Reconnect students are enrolled in Fall 2023 and/or Spring 2024 curriculum and continuing education courses. Reconnect students receive specialized academic and non-academic support from college staff.

STORM Athletics Celebrates 16 Years STORM Athletics has been part of the Davidson-Davie culture for 16 years now. By coming to Davidson-Davie, student athletes have the opportunity to pursue competitive athletics, learn teamwork and develop leadership skills — both on and off the court. When they arrive on campus, athletes meet a built-in support system of teammates, coaches, faculty, staff and fans who aid them on their Davidson-Davie journey from enrollment through graduation. Under the leadership of Athletic Director Matt Ridge, Volleyball Coach Steve Elliott and their assistants, athletes focus on a range of capabilities that will serve them throughout their lives. And at the same time, both teams often compete for top spots in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). In the 2022-23 season, the STORM women’s volleyball team posted a program-high 21 wins and only six losses, finishing with the sixth-most points per set in the nation. Kennedy Powell was selected Player of the Year in the western division of NJCAA Region 10, Division II. STORM men’s basketball posted a 33-game winning streak and for the fourth year in a row was undefeated at home in Brinkley Gym. 29-0 in the regular season, the team won the South Atlantic A District Tournament and was ranked first in the nation in the national poll of Division II junior colleges. The STORM ended the season fifth in the nation with an overall record of 35 wins and one loss, the best record in program history.

International Education Continues to Impact Campus and Community Davidson-Davie continues to be a driving force in preparing students for a global workforce and world. In the course of those efforts, the college facilitates cultural competence through a host of intercultural “Passport Events,” internationalized curriculum and study-abroad options. The 2022-2023 year afforded International Education an opportunity to return to more studyabroad programs post-pandemic, an option to offer Passport Events virtually and in-person, an overall commitment to not take travel and in-person options for granted, and the solidifying of local and international partnerships. Close to 100 International Education events were held in 2022-23 with more than 800 people in attendance. During Fall 2022, students attended study-abroad programs in Italy and Ireland. Then during Spring 2023, students traveled to Costa Rica and Japan. Finally, Summer 2023 was filled with opportunities in France, specifically Bordeaux for the second year of partnership with the University of Bordeaux, and Paris in partnership with EPITA. The college continues to internationalize and enrich campus through inviting Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants (FLTAs) into classes and welcoming international students from several countries. These visitors who become members of the campus and local communities share their culture with everyone they meet. Combined with the nearly 100 faculty, staff, students, and community members who have studied abroad and then shared their experiences upon their return, the impact on global engagement and awareness is significant and far-reaching.

Hundreds of scholarships are awarded each year by the Davidson-Davie Foundation; athletics and international education are examples of programs that benefit from foundation support. The foundation, in coordination with the college Board of Trustees, also pursues a variety of strategic initiatives to promote growth and excellence for Davidson-Davie.
