Charlotte Community Kitchen Opportunities Charlotte Community Kitchen (CCK) is a program of the Galilee Center at 3601 Central Avenue in Charlotte, NC. The Center provides rent-free space for non-profits, many of whom serve the refugee populations in East Charlotte. CCK serves a free, delicious, healthy, homemade meal to anyone in the community each Wednesday from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm. Each Wednesday, a typical shift starts at 9 am for food prep (chopping fruits and vegetables, cooking, cleaning, etc.). By 11 am, we start the process of plating and serving - all of our guests are seated at tables and waited on by our volunteers in the style of a restaurant. By 12:30 pm we've finished lunch service and are focused on cleaning and washing dishes, and finish most Wednesdays by 1:30 pm. We encourage volunteers to come for as much or as little of that time as they can. If you have an hour free, come on down! If you want to stay the whole shift, awesome! If you can come once and check us out, great! Many people, though, find that they get hooked by the fun of the team and the feelings of love and community created by our work, and they end up being regular volunteers. Davidson Lands Conservancy “The DLC works to protect valuable land, educate the public about the benefits of conservation, and advocate on behalf of our ecosystems.”

E2D- Eliminate Digital Divide “The mission of E2D is to ensure that all students have affordable access to essential at- home technology and digital literacy training to support academic success and prepare students for college, careers, and beyond.”

Food For Thought Program “Food For Thought is a family program that aims to improve children's literacy and math skills through family food routines such as grocery shopping and cooking. This project is currently being implemented in 13 CMS schools and is funded by the Brady Education Foundation."
Opportunities Interns will be involved in implementing and evaluating the Food For Thought program in CMS schools. Interns will work with Latinx kindergarten children and their families. Interns with interact with teachers and school staff. Schools are located in Charlotte. Hours vary depending on the month, but typically range from 4-6 hours. Only weekdays. No weekends. There is flexibility in the number of hours per week a student works. Skills required: Must speak and read Spanish. If you learned Spanish (in high school or took courses during your first year) and have not practiced since then, do not worry. You will have time to re-fresh your memory and practice those skills. Heart Math Tutoring “Ensure that all elementary students develop the strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics needed for long-term success, by helping schools use volunteers as tutors.”
Opportunities Volunteers must commit to 30 minutes or 1 hour per week at a high-need CMS elementary school helping a student build basic math skills (Counting, Adding to 10) and confidence. There is an onsite coordinator all at sessions and a scripted curriculum is provided to make sure you and your student are successful. Opportunities Volunteer Department Assistant Second Harvest Food Bank's Volunteer Department has seen extensive growth and has over 80,000 volunteers per year! They are looking for someone that would like to help with adding up volunteer hours, verifying student volunteer hours, greeting volunteers, deploying volunteers to their projects, working with the other volunteers at a food inspecting project and other various administrative help as needed. Some standing and walking thru the warehouse is required but will also have a desk/chair to work at for paperwork. Skills Needed: • An outgoing personality • Enjoys speaking to groups • Computer skills include Outlook and Excel and learning our volunteer online calendar system CERVIS. Opportunities Smithville CommUNITY Coalition is looking for two student volunteers to: • Work with community volunteers, residents, attorneys and other contractors (title companies) and others to be determined. • Build family trees and determine heirs for Smithville land and home ownership that will be sufficient for identifying all economic legal stakeholders for a neighborhood revitalization. • Conduct interviews of residents, contact parties living elsewhere by mail, email, phone, or other means. Access relevant web-based tools, family and church bibles, and public records to aid in the building of lists of property owners and their respective proportion of ownership. Hours/schedules per week are negotiable. Ideally, they are giving meaningful experiences to students who are committed to doing service work as part of their enrollment. Work will be done on campus and in the neighborhood. Neighborhood volunteers will accompany students on any home visits or community interviews. Skills: • Basic internet search of websites • Ability to gain trust with African American residents of Smithville to gather details of their ancestry • Interest in the preservation of Historic neighborhoods, racial justice, solutions to affordable housing, and community revitalization • Ability to work with limited supervision with a peer student and/or class from Davidson College on efforts connecting to this research. Ideally: familiarity with relational data bases in which to store research- written, photos, recorded word interviews and other formats. Must have your own cellular phone, transportation, and a Mac/PC. Smithville is a historically African American neighborhood now part of Cornelius, NC. Its origin dates back to post-Civil War years with more formal organization in the early 1900s. It is a community bypassed by segregation and racism and finding itself under a threat for survival.
