Agriculture in Costa Rica- Main countries where CR exports: US 47%, Belgium 13%, Holland 9%. Pineapple Exportation during 2011: Fruits: US$743 million, Extract: US$63 million, Juice: US$19 million. Land: 45 000 ha- 22 500 ha Northern part, 14 400 ha Caribbean, 8 100 ha Southern part. Pineapple- 40-50 thousand plants/ha, 7% is for national consumers, Largest importer from CR: USA (2004: 61% of its pineapple importation) Exportation is made by PINDECO (Del Monte), Transnational company, Buys the product to costarican farmers- Farmers: land and labor, PINDECO: technology, equipment and marketing. Widespread concerns: Very fast increase in cultivated land, Use of fertilizers, Strong efects on soil: nutrient extract, loss of organic matter. CO2 emissions: direct burning of fossil fuels for farm operation.
