LEGER, LE CORBUSIER, AND PURISM
Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? Le Corbusier believed people viewed space differently, depending on their location within it. Put another way, when an individual moves through space around an object, the perspective of viewer in relation to that object changes. Pictorial space on the other hand is unchanging. It is space which can not be moved through or around to offer an alternative perspective. It is constant and offers frontality. It offers one view and one view only.
Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against? Flatness and frontality are two properties attributed to Le Corbusiers paintings. Frontality and flatness may be contrasted to three dimensional views. These views are commonly gained in everyday life where an individual can move through space in relation to an object, altering its perspective. In contrast, paintings offer a viewing medium that is unchanging. They do not offer a reality in which a viewer can move in and around its make up. Le Corbusier used distintict techniques to give a sense of flatness and frontality. For example in Le Corbusier Nature Morte, objects are married against one another, sharing lines that provide a continuality to the viewer. The consistent way in which the objects have been represented enhances the sense of frontality and flatness.

MARIO’S WORLD Mario World 17
Mario World 3
I was provided with the above images taken from Super Mario to guide the creation of a new mario world. Using these two dimensional images i had to design a three dimensional axonometric mario world. All the original elements of the worlds were to be incorporated aswell as additional elements conceived by the designer that would enhance the new world.

AXONOMETRIC DRAWINGS Mario World 3
Mario World 17
The first process in designing a new mario world involved separating objects into layers (See image one in appendices). This helped me to consider where elements of the world might sit on an axonometric plane. Once i had a design in mind, i traced and drew three seperate sections on tracing paper. I combined the land sections of Mario 3 and 17 but left the bottom section of Mario 17 as i thought ths would allow me to experiement with layout easier on Illustrator.

The length of the floating land blocks is elongated beyond 200mm. The width is approximately 200mm. In retrospect i would have used a 200mm x 200mm square for my land. Objects would have appeared closer together making the landscape busier.
COMBINED MARIO’S WORLD
I traced a separate drawing of mario world 3 onto a new A3 piece of tracing paper. I then added the Mario world 17 section to this. This allowed me to link up and align features between the two worlds, such as the pipes. I then retraced both sections onto an A4 tracing paper (seen here). This drawing was scanned and traced in illustrator using the pen tool. Using .25pt for object lines and .5pt for section cut lines i was able to gain a clean outline of my design. The bottom of world 17 was likewise scanned and traced in illustrator. Layers were used to segregate elements of the bottom such as the pipes, blocks and arrows. This allowed me to experiment with their composition.
Original drawings of Mario world 3 and 17 adjusted in photoshop and combined on illustrator.

AXONOMETRIC PROJECTION
Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection?
Pictoral or perspectival space can be used to represent a certain view of an object. It involves an infinity or vanishing point of which all lines lead to. The angle toward the point can be set based on the desired perspective. In contrast projection involves no vanishing point. Although lines are set at a desired angle they never meet and instead run parralel to one another. Axonmetric drawing is an example of projection drawing. Using axonometric projection, an objects size on a two dimensional plane can be replicated in mathematical way, giving the object a dimensional accuracy. Projection is not concerned with replicating a viewpoint like perspectival, instead it is used commonly for accurate constuction.
Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection ďŹ rst arise, and why? Axonometric drawing has been used where the need for accurate representation of an object is required. It was used early by the military to map three dimensional trajectories of artillery projectiles. During the 18th and 19th century it was taught in engineering schools. It was aligned with mechanilisation and industrialisation. Its use in these areas is due to its scientific and mathematical approach to representation. The aforementioned areas found this useful as it was a more accurate way of representation than perspectival.

MARIO’S NEW WORLD The final stage of my axonometric reconstruction involved graphically editing the new mario world. I attempted to replicated the colours of the original world using the eye dropper tool. Using the gradient tool i was able to give objects greater shape, particularly cylindrical ones, by layering gradients over coloured objects. The shading gradients were represented as if light were shining from the top right corner of the world. The shape of my new mario world is cuboid. The view of the world extends underground through the gaps of the floating land and opaque shadow encompassing the underground. I used a cuboid shadow to exaggerate the underground and add contrast to the ground. This was also done as i was replicating the black of the underground in mario world 17. I placed the suspended objects on the first layer at the rear to contrast those on the ground and give the world increased height on the vertical plane. The pipes of the new mario world act as linking points between the original worlds. A pipe in mario world 3 winds its way to the foreground of mario world 17. Likewise the ground is linked to the underground structure with multiple pipes. The pipes were also used practically to explain to the viewer how the structure underground might be held in place.
The finished new mario world
The landscape appears mainly industrial through the use of the pipes, square and rectangular shapes. Natural elements such as flowers and trees are not realistic; they appear mechanical rather than natural.
