from the president Dear Alumni and Friends, You will read in this edition of Forward of the opening and dedication of The McDonnell Center for Health, Physical Education, and Athletics on October 13, 2007, during Homecoming and Family Weekend. Above all else, this milestone in the history of the College stands as an affirmation of the diverse, yet unified, community that is Davis & Elkins College. More than 400 donors contributed to the fulfillment of this dream. They include: • Alumni from as early as the Class of 1932 to as recently as the Class of 2007, • Parents of former and current students, including lead donors Jim and Elizabeth McDonnell of St. Louis, Missouri, • Current students who contributed $25,000 in 2005 as part of the very special Student Assembly matching challenge, • Faculty, staff, and administrators, • Community leaders who responded early on, and then again in 2007 to a special community challenge, and • A host of clubs, organizations, and private foundations. Their gifts included big and modest contributions, one-time special gifts, and “stretch” gifts paid in installments over a period of time. The campaign to raise funds for The McDonnell Center was about money, but it was also about much more. • It was about what people who share a common vision can achieve when they work together. • It was about the synergy of one person urging another to get involved - repeated hundreds of times over. • It was about how each of us chooses to define our personal identity through the organizations we support. • It was about the bond we feel when we invest in the lives of others, even - and maybe especially - when we invest in the lives of those we may never know personally. • It was about the confidence with which we face an always uncertain future. • It was about the personal reward that accompanies contributing to a worthy cause. By living true to its educational mission, Davis & Elkins College is one of those little gems of American culture that simultaneously depends upon the ongoing support of its extended community, while affirming the value of that community. If you missed the opportunity to be among the 400 who made the opening of The McDonnell Center possible, don’t worry: there will still be opportunities to invest personally and financially in the life of this remarkable community. There will always be opportunity. As we celebrate the opening and dedication of The McDonnell Center, let us make certain that it will stand not only as a tangible image of a task accomplished, but more importantly, as a vision of what we can accomplish when we work together for the advancement of Davis & Elkins College and its mission of supporting the intellectual, personal, and spiritual development of students for lives of fulfillment and service. Best wishes,

International Students D&E’s international student population has grown this year to 35 students from 21 countries. In December, some of these students braved a heavy snowfall and walked to Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church for a dinner with members of the Elkins Branch of the American Association of University Women: Cora McKibbin (Northern Ireland), Maroua Manai (Tunisia), Matthew Fannon (England), Zahra Khalid (Pakistan), Sherief Nagui (Egypt), Tigran Ghazaryan (Armenia), and Ebtisam Bahar (Bahrain).
D&E Students Place First in West Virginia High Tech Competition The West Virginia High Technology Consortium (WVHTC) Foundation awarded a team of D&E students its First Place prize of $1,000 for the Fall 2007 Global Grid Exchange® Higher-Ed Student Project Competition. The competition is a bi-annual event and open to undergraduate and graduate level students throughout the state of West Virginia. Participants are challenged to write grid-based computer applications that leverage the computational power of the Global Grid Exchange (G2EX). G2EX is a collaborative grid computing effort between Parabon Computation®, Inc. and the West Virginia High Technology Consortium (WVHTC) Foundation. G2EX harnesses the idle processing power of donors’ computers from around the globe and makes it available to researchers as a lowcost alternative to traditional supercomputer resources. G2EX is powered by Parabon Computation®’s Frontier Compute Engine®. Mattingly. Team members included Danielle Anderson, a senior in Computer Information Systems, Makesi Bostic, a senior in Computer Science and Math, Jay Matthews, a senior in Computer Science and Math, and Kevin Thurston, a junior in Computer Science. In their project, titled “Goldbach’s Conjecture,” the Davis & Elkins team utilized G2EX to try to identify a counterexample to Goldbach’s theory. Goldbach’s Conjecture states that every even number bigger than two is a sum of two prime numbers (e.g. 4 = 2 + 2, 6 = 3 + 3 etc.). The computational time is typically very long when testing Goldbach’s Conjecture on a single computer. However, the Davis & Elkins team found that when the same numbers of tasks are shared among multiple computers on G2EX, the computational time is significantly decreased. In their research, the Davis & Elkins team was unable to find any counterexample to disprove Goldbach’s Conjecture.

Planning for The McDonnell Center for Health, Physical Education, and Athletics began more than ten years ago, as campus leaders recognized the need for a new facility to support its programs in physical education, intercollegiate athletics, campus recreation, and fitness. Today, that vision is fulfilled, thanks to the generosity and hard work of the more than 400 individuals and organizations who have contributed to this project, beginning with Mr. and Mrs. James S. McDonnell, III, who made the initial $3 million lead gift commitment in 1997. Many others followed their lead, either through direct gifts or through volunteerism and initiatives dedicated to making the project a success, including the nine who made individual commitments greater than $100,000 each, the Centennial Campaign leaders and volunteers who made the project a centerpiece of the campaign; the 2006 D&E Student Assembly, which raised $25,000 through the Student Assembly Challenge; and the individuals and organizations who responded to the recent Community Challenge funded by an anonymous donor. Phase I and Phase II are complete, enabling D&E to open the doors to The McDonnell Center for students, faculty, staff, and community members who will enjoy it for years to come. Current facilities include the arena, track, locker rooms, training suite, lobby, and Athletic Hall of Fame. More work remains, as the College seeks funds to complete Phase III, which will provide classrooms and offices to support the physical education and athletics programs as well as a new fitness center. The McDonnell Center provides a dynamic new home for athletic competition, physical education, recreation and fitness activities. It strengthens the College’s competitive position in recruiting students. And it provides a vital resource for the citizens of Randolph County and the region. Davis & Elkins College is deeply grateful to all who have made this possible.

Two Endowed Chairs
Reach $1 Million Mark D&E now has fully funded three of the endowed chairs it has been seeking to create. The Clair Deiss Fiorentino Chair in Theatre was funded with a $1 million commitment from her son, Tony Fiorentino, in 2005. Now, the Thomas Richard Ross Chair and the McDonnell Chair in Honor of Gloria Payne have reached their $1 million goals. These prestigious endowed chairs will greatly enhance academic programs and opportunities at D&E.
“And it is particularly fitting, since Dr. Ross has devoted much of his professional and personal life during the past 58 years to endowing generations of D&E students with an eagerness to explore new ideas, the capacity to weigh competing perspectives, and an intellectual curiosity that lasts a lifetime. “An endowment suggests permanency,” added Mann. “Certainly Dr. Ross’s profound and gentle nurture through the years has firmly established itself as a permanent part of the College’s rich legacy. The financial support that The Thomas Richard Ross Faculty Chair in History and the Humanities has attracted is a heartfelt expression of gratitude and affection that this community feels for one of its most respected and beloved members.” Dr. Ross held many positions at Davis & Elkins College Professor and Chair of the Department of History and Political Science, Dean of the Faculty, College Historian, and, since his retirement in 1985, Trustee Advisor. Dr. Ross expressed his appreciation to all the donors, especially his family, former students, and friends in the Elkins community. “I’m gratified and delighted to know that the Ross Chair in History and the Humanities has been fully funded at $1 million,” said Ross. “This chair will have great significance to the College, as it will finance a professorship forever. All colleges and universities would like to have endowed chairs. The more that D&E has, the stronger its academic programs will be.”
Dr. T. Richard Ross
The Thomas Richard Ross Chair in History and the Humanities At homecoming, members of the Davis & Elkins College Ross Society received outstanding news: the College had just fulfilled its $1 million funding goal for the Thomas Richard Ross Endowed Chair in History and the Humanities. D&E President Tom Mann called the achievement a great honor to Dr. Ross and an invaluable legacy to the College and its students. “Permanently endowing a faculty chair in honor of Dr. Ross is a very significant achievement in the life of the extended Davis & Elkins College community,” said President Mann.
10 | Davis & Elkins College Forward... Winter ’07-’08
Fund-raising for the Ross Chair commenced in 1985, when Dr. Ross’s son, T.R., announced that he and his sister, Laurie Taylor were establishing the Chair. Additional funds were raised during D&E’s recent Centennial Campaign, when the goal was increased from $300,000 to $1 million. By 2005, less than $200,000 was needed to reach the $1 million mark. Continued efforts by volunteers and staff completed that goal, which was announced by Dr. Ross’s son, Attorney T.R. Ross, in October. The total raised to date is $1,009,000. Volunteers who have made the Ross Chair campaign a success include Mr. T.R. Ross, Pete Dougherty, Mike DiMario, A. Bryant Applegate, Scott McCormick, the members of the Centennial Campaign committee and members of the T.R. Ross Society, founded in 2004.
giving The McDonnell Chair was established in 1985 with a gift of $350,000 from James and Elizabeth McDonnell in gratitude for the education their daughter, Marcella, received under Dr. Payne’s guidance. When the Centennial Campaign was launched, the McDonnells agreed to have their gift combined with gifts from other alumni and friends as the College sought to endow the McDonnell/Payne Chair at $1 million. This achievement will provide an important financial foundation for the Department of Business Administration and Economics, providing long-term faculty support.
Dr. Gloria M. Payne
The James S. McDonnell Foundation Chair in Business and Economics in Honor of Gloria M. Payne In December, friends of Dr. Payne achieved their goal of fully funding the James S. McDonnell Foundation Chair in Business and Economics in Honor of Gloria M. Payne, reaching the $1 million mark with help from a special matching challenge from the McDonnell family. “This is a tremendous honor and one that I never dreamed of receiving,” said Dr. Payne. “It is wonderful that the efforts and contributions of so many people culminated into this. I am overwhelmed. “Heartfelt gratitude is extended to all who worked hard to make this a reality - especially the McDonnell family, Wendell Cramer and John Whitman,” Dr. Payne added. “Of course, I am grateful to the administration, my friends, former students, and family who combined their efforts as a team to make this become a reality. They have provided a profound honor - one that will live in my heart forever.”
President Mann expressed his pleasure and gratitude to the many supporters of the McDonnell/Payne Chair. “Davis & Elkins College is grateful to the McDonnell Family and to the many alumni and friends who contributed to the chair,” said Mann. “The Business and Economics Department is one of our largest and most diverse, including traditional programs such as management and marketing, but also distinctive programs in hospitality management and recreation management and tourism, which train students to work in these growing industries in our region. Full funding for the McDonnell/Payne Chair will provide vital resources to ensure that our business programs remain strong, vital, and positioned to prepare students well for today’s competitive, rapidly evolving business world.” Payne, who has been a member of the faculty since 1945 and continues to lead the department today, is known for the very personal approach she takes. Her strong relationships with students and alumni are a part of D&E’s best traditions. Scores of today’s business leaders have expressed gratitude to Dr. Payne. She has been honored repeatedly by leading business organizations, and, in 2005, she was given a Certificate of Achievement by the State of West Virginia in a special ceremony at the House of Delegates in Charleston. The newly endowed chair will allow D&E to uphold Dr. Payne’s legacy. It strengthens the College’s commitment to scholarship, to student learning, and to the creativity and persistence that Dr. Payne has continually cultivated in her students.
Davis & Elkins College is continuing its efforts to fund a final endowed academic chair: the S. Benton Talbot Chair in the Natural Sciences. To contribute, contact Patricia Schumann, vice president for college advancement, at 304-637-1340.

Reap Honors, Records Men’s Soccer The D&E Men’s Soccer program had an outstanding 2007 season, earning the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season title and seeing Head Coach Mark Stollsteimer named WVIAC Coach of the Year. The Senators finished the season 17-5-0 and were ranked 6th in the NCAA, Division II, in the Appalachian Region. This is the first regular season conference title for D&E Men’s Soccer since 1985. Three D&E men received NCAA honors this year. Senior Forward Makesi Bostic (San Fernando, Trinidad) was named to the 2007 Daktronics NCAA, Division II, Men’s Soccer All-American Team as an Honorable Mention awardee. Bostic has had a stellar career for the Senators since arriving in the summer of 2003. He played almost every position on the pitch and led the team in scoring this season. He was WVIAC Rookie of the Year in 2003 and has been a fouryear First Team WVIAC All-Conference selection. Bostic has also been named to the NCAA All-Appalachian Region Team three times in his career. In 2006, he was the only WVIAC player to garnish First Team honors, and, in 2007, he and teammate Tim O’Toole were the only two WVIAC players to be recognized at all. Bostic and three teammates were named to the Daktronics NCAA, Division II, Men’s Soccer AllAppalachian Region First Team, including sophomore goal keeper Timothy O’Toole (Arlington, VA), and junior defender Matt Fannon (York, England).
D&E Men’s Soccer team brought home the WVIAC Conference Title this year – the first time since 1985! The winning team shown here includes: (on ground) John Parsons; (front row) Stephan Engle, Brett Keatley, Ben McArthur, Michael Perez, Mark Wood, Tristan Weirbonski, John Aldous, Cole Johnson; (back row) James Kpainay, John-Carlo Rock, Burge Speilman, Matt Fannon, Tim O’Toole, Joel Richardson, Elvis Hedji, Daniel Kwafo, Andrew Howell, Aaron Edings, Makesi Bostic, Michael Knox and Head Coach Mark Stollsteimer.
Five D&E men were named First Team All Conference: Bostic, Fannon, O’Toole, junior defender Aaron Edings (Odenton, MD), and junior midfielder Daniel Kwafo (Accra, Ghana). Three men were named Second Team All Conference: sophomore defender Brett Keatley (Lexington, South Carolina), junior midfielder Mark Wood (Baltimore, MD), sophomore Michael Perez (Arlington, VA) and senior midfielder Michael Knox (Toronto, Ontario); while D&E sophomore defender James Kpainay (Silver Spring, MD) received Honorable Mention All Conference.

Junior forward Katie McArthur (Elkins, WV) and senior defender Rachel Moore (Oregon, OH) received honorable mention All Conference honors. The Women’s team improved over last season, ending with an overall record of 11-9-2.
Volleyball Women’s Soccer D&E Women’s soccer players received national and regional recognition this year, and made it to the semi-finals of the WVIAC championship tournament under Head Coach Mat Santoro. Freshman forward Cole Dant (Elkton, MD) was named to the 2007 Daktronics NCAA, Division II, All-America Third Team for her play as the Lady Senators’ top goal scorer for the ’07 season. Dant made an immediate impact during her first season, with a league-leading 29 goals. She was selected as WVIAC Freshman of the Year and was a unanimous first team All-WVIAC pick. She is the first women’s soccer player at D&E to earn All-American honors and the lone rookie named to the top three squads on the Daktronics All-American team. D&E’s last NCAA, Div. After serving as 2006 interim head coach, Latonia Allen was named Head Coach for Women’s Volleyball this season, and saw two players receive a national ranking. The D&E spikers also hosted the first game in D&E’s new McDonnell Center. Allen played against D&E as a student at Alderson-Broaddus where she was named WVIAC Freshman of the Year, picked three times for First Team All Conference and named WVIAC Player of the Year in 2004. She holds BS and MS degrees in Athletic Training. Allen’s team ended the regular season 59 in the conference, 6-17 overall. Her team ranked 42nd in NCAA, Div. II, for its hitting percentage. Senior middle hitter Jennifer Pell (Morgantown, WV) received second team All Conference honors and was ranked 23rd in the nation for her .384 hitting percentage in the NCAA, Div. II. Heidi Floyd also received NCAA, Div. II, honors, ranking 38th for digs per game.
athletics Allen also serves D&E as the Senior Woman Administrator and oversees the Student Athletic Advisory Council.
Stollsteimer Named WVIAC Coach of the Year
Golf
Mark Stollsteimer, who led Davis & Elkins College to the WVIAC regular season title, was named the conference’s Coach of the Year. “Stolli” and the D&E men finished the season 8-10 (conference) and were 17-5-0 overall, the most victories during the coach’s 11-year career.
A second-place finish at The Senator Shootout at Snowshoe Resort’s The Raven and a seventh place finish with three D&E freshmen in the top 20 at the WVIAC Championship highlighted Davis & Elkins College’s fall 2007 golf season.
Under Stollsteimer, the D&E soccer program has established itself as one of the teams to beat in the West Virginia Athletic Conference and has seen numerous winning seasons, including multiple nine-win seasons. Players have achieved many individual accomplishments under Stollsteimer, including two of the last three WVIAC Student Athletes of the Year. He has also built success in the classroom, with 21 of his student-athletes receiving All Conference academic honors.
Under returning coach Scott Goddard (’96), the team was on the move with very impressive performances by its three freshmen: Graeme Robertson (Sterling, Scotland), Thomas Parry (Goole, England), and Neil Howitt (Nairn, Scotland). Upperclassmen Brandon Bates (Little Hocking, OH), Cory Dillinger (Bobtown, PA) and Ricardo Solar (Chi-Cundinamarca, Colombia) rounded out the team for its best oncourse performance in recent history. The Senators will tee up again this spring, beginning with the Glenville State College Spring Invitational in Belpre, Ohio.
Stollsteimer first became familiar with the Davis and Elkins program as an assistant coach from 1994-96, and served as Interim Head Coach in 1997. Three other D&E runners also had career bests at the 10K distance: junior Joel Turley (Summit Point, WV), 34:09; junior Troy Higgens (Elkins), 35:25, and senior Matt Bright (Ripley, WV), 36:21. Halloween Basketball Bash a Success On Halloween night the Davis and Elkins basketball teams hosted the 1st Annual Halloween Basketball Bash in the new McDonnell Center. Kids received a free t-shirt and goody bag courtesy of several sponsors and donors. Activities for the kids included a costume contest, relay races, and a chance to win another free t-shirt tossed into the crowd by a few D&E volleyball players. Kids cheered as the lights turned off, music came on, and a spotlight shined on the D&E women’s and men’s basketball teams as they warmed up for their inter-squad competitions. Four men and four women competed against the clock in a three point contest. Five members of the D&E faculty and staff judged the highlight of the night: a “bring you to your feet” dunk contest. To finish off the night, the women’s and men’s teams scrimmaged to show off what they are bringing to the court this season. The College’s new assistant men’s basketball coach, Curtis Metten, D&E Class of 2000, organized the event with the help of the entire athletics department staff. Metten, who returns to D&E after six years at Eastern Kentucky University, has expertise in not only coaching, but also in community service, booster club development, sport marketing and youth camps. Hopefully this night will grow into a much anticipated D&E tradition!

their mission trip with Mercy Ships. They served onboard the Africa Mercy from June 28 - August 11, 2007, docked in Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa. Mercy Ships, a global charity, has operated hospital ships in developing nations since 1978. Following the example of Jesus, Mercy Ships brings hope and healing to the forgotten poor, mobilizing people and resources worldwide, and serving all people without regard for race, gender or religion. Mercy Ships follows the 2,000year-old model of Jesus: the blind see, the lame walk, the mute speak, and Good News (the nature and character of a loving God) is proclaimed and demonstrated among the poor. Ryan worked with the Academy children in the summer program part time and developed science curriculum for the upcoming school year. Ryan also cataloged the chemicals used in the science classrooms as well as onboard the ship. All the unused chemicals then were donated to the University of Liberia. In his spare time, Ryan went with the Community Development Team to survey the wells recently built and to build latrines in a nearby village. Kim worked as a registered nurse in the Operating Room assisting with vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) repairs, repairs of club feet, and cataract surgeries. Kim also assisted with surgeries related to the Liberian Civil War such as bullet injuries, 6 inch long piece of shrapnel embedded in an arm, and a 12-year-old girl who as a toddler had her arm placed in a fire by rebels and now was scarred and contracted. The most dramatic were the women with the VVF repairs. Vesicovaginal fistulas are related to childbirth injuries. When the women have been in hard labor for several days, a hole can be torn in their bladders. Some of these women had suffered for many years the embarrassment and shame of constant leaking from the bladder and smell. Most of the women had been ostracized from their villages and their families. After the surgery, their countenance changed from timidity to rejoicing because they are dry. A VVF Dress Ceremony is held where the women receive a new colorful African dress with headpiece. They dance, sing, and worship God for their newfound freedom. “We are so thankful

Drive with Pride II After the success of our initial “Drive with Pride” campaign to obtain a State of West Virginia license plate, we are extending our borders to Maryland and holding “Drive with Pride II.” The College is in the process of applying for an official State of Maryland logo license plate. The proposed plate design would feature the red & white D&E circle logo and have Davis & Elkins College written across the bottom. In order to have a complete application, the College needs to pre-sell a minimum of 25 plates. Rachel Montgomery, Director of Alumni Relations says that she believes that finding 25
alumni and friends of D&E in Maryland to “Show their Pride when they Drive” should not be that hard of a task. She says, “We had so many alumni from Maryland ask about this opportunity when we were in the campaign for our West Virginia plate, I'm happy that we can now offer it to our Maryland alumni too.” It's easy to be one of the first to have a Maryland D&E plate. Just fill out the form below and return it, with payment, to Rachel Montgomery, Davis & Elkins College, 100 Campus Drive, Elkins, WV 26241. Questions?
