Dear Friends, Last year we expanded our showroom, and this year our in-store growth continues. We are thrilled to share several additions, both to our branded lines and service offerings. Two notable, new lines you’ll find in our showroom — Roberto Coin and Noam Carver. Roberto Coin pieces are enchanting, symbolic 18 karat gold works of art from Vicenza, Italy. Noam Carver is a sculptor and goldsmith who has designed award-winning engagement rings — an exciting story of young artistry in the jewelry industry. Our watch service center opened in October, allowing us to offer full-service in-store watch service by our SAWTA Certified watchmaker, Christopher Wheeler. Reflecting on the year, what is paramount for all of us at Davis Jewelers is our endless appreciation for your business, support, and friendship. With every engagement, birthday, anniversary, and gift of love that is shared in your lives, we are touched to be included in your memorable occasions. The holidays are approaching, and our dedicated team has curated the pieces that we believe will become the representation of your life’s sentiments — treasures now and forevermore. We welcome you back, as you plan for the most special gift-giving moments in your life. From our heart to yours, Love. It’s What We Do. The Davis Family

WATCHES WATCH FIVE MUST-HAVE TRENDS IN TIMEPIECES

THIS YEAR, TIMEPIECES ARE ALL ABOUT VALUE. PARED-DOWN, VINTAGE-STYLE DESIGNS ARE MORE REASONABLY PRICED THAN THE BIG SHOWPIECES OF PREVIOUS YEARS, YET STATE-OF-THE-ART MECHANICAL MOVEMENTS ARE STILL NESTLED UNDER THE HOOD. HERE’S A SELECTION OF OUR FAVORITE WATCHES FOR 2017.

Skeleton dials

Skeletonizing a watch lets you see the mechanical movement in all its technical glory. It involves carving away the bridges and plates of the movement and dial and then decorating what is left. A traditionally skeletonized watch is intricately engraved in filigree or scrolling patterns, but watches can also be simply open-worked, with bridges and plates cut away and then blackened or sandblasted rather than engraved. The allure is the same: they offer a fascinating glimpse into the mysterious world of mechanical watchmaking.

Rose Gold The rich glow of rose gold is the latest hue to hit watch cases. Rose gold was traditionally the color used by the watch industry to add cachet to a special-edition timepiece, signaling to collectors that it was a rare complication or a limited edition. Today, rose gold is more mainstream, but it still gives a modern watch a certain old-world cachet and a touch of panache.

Chronographs are complex tool watches, used to time short intervals, such as for a motor race, a bike ride, or just grilling the perfect steak. As the most popular complication (any function other than hours, minutes, and seconds), the chronograph has become highly sophisticated. When it comes to movement design, purists prefer integrated to modular, because the integrated variety is designed to be a chronograph from the ground up. That means all components are optimized for that use. Raymond Weil Freelancer Automatic In stainless steel with silver dial and blue bezel. $2,995

Since Apple entered the smartwatch business in 2014, several traditional watch brands have developed their own versions. The wrist is, after all, the territory of the watch industry, and watch companies intend to protect their turf. Traditional watchmakers, such as TAG Heuer, have created wearables that look more like conventional mechanical wristwatches, which many watch collectors find more appealing, yet with the functionality of a smartwatch.

Classic Combination

Mix things up a bit with a timepiece that is made of a combination of metals. Models ranging from sporty to sleek become even more interesting and versatile when bold variations of gold and steel are paired together. The art of creating watches from multiple materials is not new, but the latest dual toned styles suit today’s eclectic fashion trends better than ever.

The Tudor Heritage Black Bay has a long history as a highperformance sports watch. It was introduced in 1954 as a

professional diver’s watch and continued to evolve throughout the ’90s and beyond. Running parallel to this historical development, Tudor unveiled another professional sport model in 1970: the Prince Oysterdate Chronograph, which was closely tied to the world of motorsports. Fast-forward to 2017: the Heritage Black Bay Chrono fuses the best qualities of these two separate sports watches: a chronograph for accurate timing and 200-meter water resistance for professional divers. The great thing about seeking inspiration from archival pieces is the ability to combine the best attributes from more than one watch, add a modern movement, and create something new that represents the best of all worlds: original vintage details combined with a state-of-the-art movement and materials. Details from vintage pieces include: the snowflake hands, a brand signature since 1969; a prominent winding crown from an iconic 1958 model; pushers inspired by the first-generation Tudor chronographs; a signature fabric strap specially woven on 19th century jacquard looms by a

SCULPTURE FOR THE BODY

David Yurman’s background as a sculptor adds proportion and dimension to his jewelry collections

David Yurman’s fall 2017 collections are the greatest expression yet of his work as a sculptor and his love of shape. The jewelry in this season’s collections is expertly chiseled out of a sculptor’s imagination, resulting in jewelry that is dramatic, yet simple and organic. It moves with the body, it is proportioned for the body, and it makes a statement about the way jewelry can be used to reflect the beautiful forms that surround us in everyday life.

Pure Form is so-named because of its distinctly sculptural element and scale. It is a deeply personal collection for David Yurman, with strong, graphic proportions and a modern sheen. The mix of metals, textures, and colors represent a wonder of engineering and takes the stacked look to the next level. The pieces are dramatic but at the same time simple and streamlined. They are also light and wearable: both the smooth and cable elements are hollow inside.

The Barrels collection is inspired by another unique shape: the natural crystal formations of minerals. David uses amazonite and black onyx to express the concept, faceting them in the way a more traditional gemstone would be, giving them the shape and depth of a geometrically sculpted object. They are pure expressions of a sculptor’s love for natural crystalline structures and shapes.

Chain drop earrings and single-station necklace, set with amazonite, blue sapphire, and diamonds in 18k gold. Earrings $2,250 Necklace $1,950

The Chatelaine collection takes things up yet another notch, representing the perfect union between David and his wife, Sybil Yurman, who is also an artist. For David, creativity begins with a celebration of sculptural form; for Sybil, it is about color and palette. This year’s collection is set with colorful stones, including a choice of blue topaz, black onyx, or pink morganite. This year’s collection includes stunning pieces made with faceted gold.

Sea-Dweller

what makes the next-generation rolex sea-dweller a smart investment?

The second weekend in May of this year was a milestone in the world of vintage timepiece auctions, particularly for Rolex. On the first of a two-day sale by Phillips/Bacs & Russo in Geneva, a tense 13-minute showdown between 10 bidders resulted in the highest price ever paid for a Rolex timepiece at auction: $5.1-million. The watch was a 1952 Rolex Ref. 6062, nicknamed the “Bao Dai” because it belonged to the last emperor of Vietnam. The following day, a 10-minute bidding war erupted over another vintage Rolex, a Paul Newman Daytona known among collectors simply as “The Legend.” When the hammer came down, the victor had paid the highest price ever for a Rolex Daytona — $3.7-million.

Rolex is legendary in the world of vintage watches,

and that means today’s next-generation timepieces are the collector’s pieces of tomorrow, potentially even more valuable than the watches mentioned above. The brand continues to upgrade and redesign key models in its goal to offer timepieces with state-of-the-art materials and movements, all the while being careful to keep just enough of a beloved model’s original design. The revisions introduced to the brand’s Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller model this year, for example, are subtle, yet in some ways revolutionary. Known as the Sea-Dweller 4000, the new model celebrates the 50th anniversary of the collection. It is not a limited edition, but rather a renewed piece that replaces its predecessor in the core collection. The Sea-Dweller has been given The Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000 celebrates the 50th anniversary of the collection.

I see. Around every corner, he sees a beautiful necklace, an angular cuff bracelet, or a dazzling cocktail ring. One of his inspirations this year was the Palazzo Ducale, the masterpiece of Venetian Gothic architecture that lines San Marco Square in Venice. The palace of the Doges has one of the most recognizable façades in the world, famous for its long rows of Venetian quatrefoils and rosettes carved above the loggia or terraces that face the piazza. This combination of architectural elements was the inspiration behind the Princess Flower collection. The prevailing motif is of a stylized quatrefoil composed of four petals that are perfectly marquis-shaped rather than round. This floral shape is used as the central feature in all the pendants, rings, earrings, and bracelets in the collection. Big or small, it can be set with diamonds or mother-of-pearl, and used as stations in long necklaces separated by fine chain links. As a ring or cuff, it works as a cut-out shape. The look is classic and harmonious, like the pure lines of Venetian architecture. But it is also feminine and romantic — perfect for a Venetian princess. $770

The Big Bangle Theory

The new Wonder Woman movie has reignited a frenzy for armoresque jewels, like big cuffs. This is not surprising, given the longstanding popularity of the DC Comics star character once portrayed on TV by Lynda Carter. The role was brought to life by another brunette beauty recently, but her wardrobe choices — think tiara-cum-weapon and indestructible Bracelets of Submission — remain consistent with the original protagonist. The result? Everyday superheroes like moms aren’t leaving home without weighty wrist numbers of their own to guard against fashion mishaps and summon strength at will.

Long earrings, as striking in profile as stiletto heels, dominated the looks at the 2017 Met Gala. Julianne Moore’s yellow and orange sapphire and diamond numbers were part of a colorful Brazilian-theme collection, while Serena Williams’s colorless diamond and emerald drops offered a cooler contrast. Meanwhile, an antique pair on Claire Danes showed that seed pearls, too, can take on a dramatic tone. No matter the material, the staggering length of stilettostyle drop earrings is what fuels their powerful vibe.

GREAT REMAKE HOW TO BRING NEW LIFE TO OLD JEWELRY

Restyling, remodeling, and upcycling — these are all great ways to transform old or never-worn jewelry into exciting new pieces. Whether it’s inherited jewelry that doesn’t reflect your style or a piece in disrepair, a custom redesign can add new life to a sentimental favorite. Maybe you’re celebrating a milestone anniversary and want to upcycle your engagement ring. Why not upgrade to a larger diamond or a gemstone instead, or incorporate a halo? Or you may be emerging from a divorce and embarking on a new direction in life. That calls for a new design that reinterprets your wedding rings. Are there earrings missing their mates in your jewelry box or styles you’ve outgrown? Think of them as opportunities to rejuvenate your jewelry wardrobe by reworking them into new styles. There are so many ways jewelers can help bring new life to old jewelry. You can repurpose diamonds and gemstones in a new setting, keep the setting and change the stones, or create something entirely different using elements from one or more pieces.

ARTIST’S EYE D

Charles Krypell’s Sculpted Jewels

During a creative career spanning more than four decades, Charles Krypell’s artistic impulses haven’t been limited to a single medium or method. Thanks to a wideranging education that included rigorous study at the prestigious Pratt Institute and practical instruction among New York’s master jewelers and stone setters, he’s created large-scale sculptures destined for museum collections and one-ofkind jewels with the rarest of gems. Charles Krypell’s jewelry fuses his early training as a fine artist with his urge to create “masterpieces that all women would be able to wear.” Charles Krypell’s intricately carved and finely finished work in sterling silver and gold reveals the depth of his skill. With equal ease, he’s able to render a delicate pendant embellished with coiling ivy motifs, cuffs with minimalist, architectural forms, and hoop earrings with soft, face-framing volume. The continued popularity of signature designs he first created more than 30 years ago affirms the timelessness of his work.

The real goal, says Krypell, is for women to “allow my jewelry to blend into their lifestyle and become part of their daily routine.”

Colored stones hold a special fascination for Krypell. In the Pastel collection he employs a full spectrum of gemstones — warm citrine, intense amethyst, and brilliant aquamarine — individually set in 18k gold designs. Classic styles, from the cocktail ring to the tennis bracelet, look fresh and relevant with Krypell’s vibrant palette and discerning craftsmanship. The Precious Pastel collection is the most exclusive manifestation of the designer’s vision. Its coveted limited-edition pieces feature exceptional white and natural color red, blue, pink, and yellow diamonds in heirloom pieces that combine the ultimate materials and artisanal production. No matter which collections his clients choose, Krypell believes that their lives dictate how his jewelry should perform, not the other way around. Each piece is made to retain its beauty while meeting the demands of a lifetime of wear. The real goal, says Krypell, is for women to “allow my jewelry to blend into their lifestyle and become part of their daily routine.”

With color so important in fashion today, gemstone jewelry is a must-have tool in a woman’s accessories wardrobe. When deciding what jewelry to wear, consider how it layers with fashion. The key is to mix colors of similar depth and strength so they don’t overpower each other. Combine strong opposites to contrast, or use tones for harmony. Interesting color combinations add structure and texture. Pantone chose “greenery” as the fashion color of 2017. It’s a refreshing light green color that serves as a symbol of spring, of restoration and renewal. “Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the hope we collectively yearn for in a complex social and political landscape,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “It satisfies our desire to rejuvenate, revitalize, and unite, and it symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another, and a larger purpose.” It’s a color that may be challenging to incorporate into your everyday wardrobe in fashion, so instead of a green pantsuit, try a piece of jewelry set with a vibrant green gemstone. Choose from peridot, emerald, green tourmaline, tsavorite garnet, and many more green gems. Worn in jewelry, greenery can become a statement-making accent piece that puts the finishing touch on your outfit. Pantone also recently announced its top colors for the season, a lineup of intense, comforting hues that can be expressed perfectly with gemstones. The colors are grenadine, tawny port, ballet slipper (pink), butterrum, navy peony, neutral gray, shaded spruce, golden lime, marina, and autumn maple. It is a lineup that evokes a plethora of colored gemstone possibilities. Here are some of our suggestions on ways you can incorporate each of these timely colors with fabulous jewelry.

Start with the stone — or stones! Your engagement ring is a symbol of love, and today more than ever, couples also consider it symbolic of their relationship. Options include the classic solitaire to show your commitment, the modern two-stone ring that serves as a beautiful representation of you and the love of your life, or the three-stone ring that symbolizes the past, present, and future of your relationship. All of them will remind you of the love you share.

Social Media Tips:

He popped the question, and you said, “Yes!” After sharing in that special moment with your new fiancé, what better way to spread the news then by making it “Facebook official.” If a friend was around to take photos, use an action shot. If not, take your first photo as fiancés with your left hand center stage. A sentence about marrying the love of your life adds the perfect touch of sweet romance. Don’t worry about getting into the details of your ring quite yet, you will have plenty of time for #ringselfies later. #LoveItsWhatWeDo
