SINGAPORE PARENTING CONGRESS 2007 Speaker’s Profile and Synopses

John Cowan With 18 years of experience working with youth and their families, John Cowan is a key presenter of Parents Inc (New Zealand) seminars. John has done a wide variety of work: scientist at the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology at Auckland Hospital, youth worker, minister, media producer and social worker with psychiatric patients. His relaxed style of communication, combined with a highly developed sense of humour and empathy for people means that he is in high demand as a speaker. John currently fronts the regular Sunday night Real Life programme on Newstalk ZB. He is widely sought after to contribute regular magazine articles and radio programmes and was a well-known identity on Jude Dobson's TV programmes. John is a gifted writer, and writes much of Parents Inc’s materials and books. He also co-authored New Zealand’s best-seller “Parenting Teenagers: The White Water Rafting Years” with Ian Grant. John is married to Naomi, who helps present many of his seminars. He has three teenage children.

“Growing Great Kids in Tough Times” Join us for an insightful and enjoyable session with John Cowan as he shares on how you can be a pro-active parent and raise great kids. By understanding the ages and stages of your child, parents will be able to structure parenting strategies that work. Find out the keys to communicating with your child, and how you can develop a positive atmosphere at home. John will also reveal useful and effective ways on how you can set loving but firm boundaries with your child and knowing what to do when the going gets tough. Bring your spouse along to discover the importance of both mother and father roles at home.

Dr Frederick Toke Dr Frederick Toke, PsyD, is the Founder and President of Lee Community College and an Adjunct Clinical Supervisor at National Institute of Education (NTU) Psychological Academic Studies Group. He holds a Doctor of Psychology degree with the American University and is a member of the American Counselling Association and serves as the Secretary of Psychotherapy Association of Singapore. Author of several life skills books, he also lectures in counselling programmes and holds public talks/seminars and counsels the community. Dr Toke is a Certified Trainer of Critical Incident Stress Management as well as a Licensed Marriage Solemnizer with ROM. He is also regularly featured on 938LIVE, CNBC, Channel NewsAsia, The Straits Times and local periodicals. Dr Toke and his wife, Agnes, have been married for 18 years and they have 2 lovely teenage children, ages 15 and 14.

Seminar Topic:

“Virtuous Parenting in a Virtual World” A worrying and threatening tribe, teenagers are often viewed as aliens from a different planet by parents and adults alike. This misunderstanding inevitably creates tensions in the home. Such problems may be made worst with the fact that cyberspace have now come to have a great shaping effect upon the way our children and teenagers live and think today. In this seminar, participants will explore the mindset of today’s teenagers and learn about them from a psychological perspective.

SINGAPORE PARENTING CONGRESS 2007 Speaker’s Profile and Synopses

Sheena Jebal Sheena Jebal, a MediaCorp Radio’s Lifelong Learner Award 2006 recipient, holds a Masters in Social Science (Applied Psychology and Counselling) and is currently pursuing a PhD (Research & Coursework) Psychology. Sheena is the CEO and Founder of NuLife Care & Counselling Services Limited, a non-profitable organization providing youth with tuition services integrated together with counselling. NuLife also specializes in preventive, developmental and remedial work targeted at youth-at-risk who are not receptive towards their family support or lack the support from their families. Ms Sheena is well sought after for professional opinions on current affair programs on Vasantham Central and the local Tamil radio station Oli 96.8FM on youth related issues such as self-harm, suicide and Boy Girl Relationship.

Seminar Topic:

“Effective Communication Leads to A Successful Parent-Child Relationship” As parents, should you encourage or discourage your child from being involved in a Boy-Girl Relationship (BGR)? When is the appropriate age for your child to be in a BGR? Let Sheena share practical parenting tips on how to communicate freely with your child on under-age sex, abortion and its consequences and not consider them as taboo. It is essential for parents to have an open communication channel especially when their child has started investing more time in BGR and has less time with their parents. Parents need to be educated on parenting skills that will enable them to handle their child when resolving issues on addiction (Cyber, Drugs, Smoking & Alcohol). How can parents engage their child in healthy activities and to communicate to them on the importance of choosing and mixing with right peers.

AlTahir Syed Omar Cikgu AlTahir Syed Omar, seorang Pengarah Dalam Pendidikan disekolah tadika Iman’s Kindergarten. The speaker will discuss such important topics as: coaching teenagers how to solve problems and make decisions; encouraging self-discipline, self-control, and interpersonal skills; and how to help their teenagers develop key competencies and character traits.
