It’s been nearly a century since THE AMERICA’S CUP yachting competition was held in New York Harbor, but this weekend you can find six international teams squaring off over the oldest international sporting trophy in the world. The globe’s best sailors and fastest boats will race amid the spectacular surroundings of lower Manhattan’s skyline. Battery Park City and the BROOKFIELD PLACE WATERFRONT PLAZA will be the center of activity, with a central event village, and thousands of spectators watching from shore and spectator boats. Races run both days, 2pm to 3:30pm, with courses and the number of races determined by the weather. 230 Vesey St. (nr. Fulton St.), 212-978-1698, brookfieldplaceny.com

Frieze isn’t the only art fair game in town: ART NEW YORK, presented by Art Miami, brings the work of over 1,200 artists from 50 countries all to one spot at PIER 94. ONGOING New York’s latest resident is a 122-footlong dinosaur so new it has yet to be formally named. Going by “Titanosaur” for now, it has taken up residence at the AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY, in a cast of 84 fossil bones that represent one of the biggest dinosaurs ever found. The Titanosaur is so large, in fact, it doesn’t fit in the gallery: a 39-foot neck extends out towards the elevator banks. Inside, find the new exhibit DINOSAURS AMONG US, which looks at the evolution of one group of dinosaurs into the birds of today. 200 Central Park West (79th St.), 212-769-5100, amnh.org

Cover Story Aladdin: “A Whole New World” On Broadway By ELLIOT RICHARDS

Cylla von Tiedemann

James Iglehart appreciates a good challenge. So much so, that while he’s on stage at the New Amsterdam Theatre flexing his comedic pecs, abs, glutes, vocal chords, and fancy footwork playing Genie in Aladdin, he frequently targets an apathetic dad, grandfather, or uncle in the second or third row and “breaks” them.

James Iglehart dazzles as Genie

“Just the other day, I broke a guy,” said Iglehart, who won a Tony in 2014 for his no-holds-barred performance in Disney’s newest Broadway musical. “He was sitting with his wife and kids, and he was stone-faced. Then I said something and he smiled a little; I said something else and he smiled some more; finally I did some move or gesture and he lost it,” Iglehart noted. Proof of his success came post-performance when the former holdout turned up at the stage door saying: “I want to shake your hand. I didn’t want to come. I can’t believe this was a show like this.” Which pretty much sums up the critical and popular consensus that has proclaimed “a show like this”—one that 18 www.cityguideny.com

features a magic lamp, flying carpet, and gilded Cave of Wonders—one of the most spectacular and enchanting family musicals to soar onto the Broadway scene. Take for example the Cave of Wonders, where Aladdin (Adam Jacobs) rubs the magic lamp and—poof!—Iglehart, a showbiz-loving, joke-spewing, tap-dancing, wish-granting Genie, launches into “Friend Like Me,” a killer production number that gives nods to Beauty and the Beast, Dancing with the Stars, Let’s Make a Deal, Fiddler on the Roof, and 42nd Street. It is this song—coming at the end of Act I—that forges the bond between the title character and his magical mentor, opening the door to riches and romance for the handsome young street thief and potential freedom for Genie, captive to the whims of the master of the lamp. The plot of Aladdin follows the hero who, with the help of Genie, masquerades as a prince to woo the sultan’s (Clifton Davis) daughter, Princess Jasmine (Courtney Reed). Meanwhile, Jafar (Jonathan Freeman, reprising the role he voiced in the movie), the sultan’s wily vizier, is conspiring to succeed the sultan and wants the magic lamp for his evil ends. Based on Disney’s 1992 animated film, the theatrical version naturally required some creative retooling for the stage: Aladdin’s BFF monkey in the film, Abu, has been tweaked into a posse of three good buddies (Jonathan Schwartz, Brian Gonzales, and Steel Burkhardt), while Jafar’s parrot Iago is now a human side-

kick played by Don Darryl Rivera. And then, of course, there’s Genie. “In the cartoon, Genie can take off his head and be a pink dragon,” said Iglehart, citing the logistic dilemma facing director/choreographer Casey Nicholaw, who opted to capitalize on the charismatic actor’s unique gifts to replace the transmogrifying animation and improvisational high jinks that defined Robin Williams’ brilliant Genie portrayal in the movie. Initially, i.e., when he originated Genie in the show’s first production in Seattle, Iglehart’s performance came across as too much of an homage to Williams. But after receiving a note from Nicholaw (“We love what you did, but we want to make this our version of Aladdin”), the actor recalled that the late Howard Ashman— who co-wrote the original score’s lyrics

with Tim Rice—imagined Genie as a bandleader and the emcee of a show. And from that point on, everything clicked. “I was a rapper as a kid. I can move a crowd,” said Iglehart. “So I had a chance to throw in my style while staying in the confines of Disney’s Genie, not Robin Williams’ Genie.” And while Iglehart admits to being a serious fan of the animated original (he’s seen the film more than 100 times in theaters, on videotape, and DVD, has a CD of the soundtrack, and has checked out the 45-minute Aladdin musical attraction at Disneyland), it clearly takes a backseat to giving life to a magical character with the power to win over even the most disengaged theatregoers. Genie’s final line says it all: “I just love a happy ending!”

Aladdin is playing at Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theatre, 214 W. 42nd St. For reservations call 866-870-2717 or visit aladdinthemusical.com.

Art, Architecture, and Heritage Here are some of the top current shows among the city’s extraordinary array of cultural institutions. MUSEUM OF MODERN ART (MOMA)

Edgar Degas, Dancer Onstage with a Bouquet, c.1876

Since its 1929 founding, the MoMA has been at the forefront of the world’s cutting edge art scene. Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Kahlo are just the beginning of an incredible permanent collection, which is supplemented by provoking temporary shows. Edgar Degas is best known for his stunning Impressionist paintings of dancers, but a new MoMA exhibition highlights the artist’s modern, daring, and rarely seen monotype prints. Edgar Degas: A Strange New Beauty explores these prints and their impact on the artist’s later works. This is the first exhibition in nearly 50 years to examine these innovative pieces, with approximately 120 monotypes joined by related paintings, drawings, pastels, sketchbooks, and prints. 11 W. 53rd St. (btw. Fifth & Sixth Aves.), 212-708-9400, moma.org

MUSEUM OF JEWISH HERITAGE— A LIVING MEMORIAL TO THE HOLOCAUST Lower Manhattan’s Museum of Jewish Heritage celebrates the lives and traditions of both those who survived and those who perished in the Shoah. The museum’s three-story Core Exhibition doesn’t shy from chronicling atrocity, but it also serves as a testament to the strength and perseverance of Jewish culture. Don’t miss artist Andy Goldsworthy’s beautiful living memorial, Garden of Stones. 36 Battery Pl. (1st Pl..), 646-437-4200, mjhnyc.org GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM Housed in an iconic Frank Lloyd Wright spiraling building, The Guggenheim Museum contains one of the world’s finest collections of modern and contemporary art, including works by Picasso, Matisse, and Modigliani. The museum’s newest exhibition (opened April 29), Guggenheim Collection: Early Modernism, features masterpieces by the likes of Brancusi, Chagall, Miró, and Mondrian, in gallery space newly devoted to the permanent collection. To inspire future architects, the museum has launched a multimedia architecture guide for kids (ages 7-12), which reveals the building’s design secrets. 1071 Fifth Ave. (89th St.), 212-423-3500, guggenheim.org

INSIDER TIPS Many of the city’s museums offer free admission for select hours on the first Friday of every month, usually in the early evening.

A trip to New York wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the New-York Historical Society, with four centuries of history and art–plus the only Children’s History Museum in the area. It hits the spot for anyone craving an offbeat (and often surprising) bite of the city’s culture easily digested in an hour or two. The most cutting-edge of the major art museums in New York, recently moved downtown. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano, the building itself is worthy of a trip, conceived as a laboratory for artists. Provoking exhibitions and an enviable collection of 20th-century American masterworks provide the baseline, with artist talks, gallery tours and screenings on the docket. BODY WORLDS: PULSE reveals the world within.

Spectacular views from dawn to dusk at Top of the Rock. New York is a vertical city and there’s no place better to take it all in than the incredible Top of the Rock, a stunning perch atop Rockefeller Center. On a clear day you can see for miles—80 to be exact. Beyond the stunning views, you’ll find state-of-the-art features like reserved-time tickets (meaning you won’t need to spend hours standing in line), multimedia exhibits, an indoor viewing area (nice and cozy this time of year), and clear panels for wholly unobstructed views of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, both rivers, and all of Central Park (you won’t appreciate the size of it until you see it from above). The observation deck was first opened to the public in 1933, and reopened in 2005 as a crown jewel of New York sightseeing. There are two crystal installations by Swarovski, an interactive lighted breezeway on the 69th floor with futuristic motion-detection technology, and, of course, the jaw-dropping Sky Shuttle elevators. Outfitted with transparent glass ceilings, the Sky Shuttles let riders view their own rapid acceleration through the building’s shaftway as they zip towards the light and open air above. Open daily 8am-midnight. Admission is $32 for adults, $30 for seniors above age 62, and $26 for children between ages 6 and 12. Kids 5 and under get in free. 30 Rockefeller Plaza (btw. Spring Showtime on Broadway By GRIFFIN MILLER demand, and/or threaten for a table or, in some cases, an alpha table. P.S. With Ferguson’s high-profile comedic charisma, and the show’s adios on 7/24, I suggest scoring tickets ASAP.

Joan Marcus

A euphoric windfall of returning VIP stars has landed on Broadway this spring and the buzz is almost deafening. Oscar winner Jessica Lange, Golden Globe recipient Gabriel Byrne, and Tony winner John Gallagher, Jr. are appearing in Long Day’s Journey Into Night, while Emmy winner Sean Hayes is going all Supreme Being in An Act of God. Meanwhile, the Tony count soars courtesy of three-time winner Frank Langella (The Father) and six-timer (a Tony record!) Audra McDonald, who’s appearing in the musical Shuffle Along—a show that reunites her with her 1988 Ragtime costar, Tony winner Brian Stokes Mitchell. The cast also boasts the talents of Billy Porter, who picked up his Tony trophy playing Lola/ Simon in the hit musical Kinky Boots. Still, of the many multi-media celebrities getting back in touch with their Broadway roots, the most familiar to present-day sitcom fans is five-time Emmy nominee Jesse Tyler Ferguson of Modern Family, who has opted to spend his summer vacation at the Lyceum Theatre embodying a cavalcade of 40+ loopy characters in the one-man comedy Fully Committed. The show’s premise is custom-made for the versatile Ferguson, who plays a guy who mans the reservation line for New York’s trendiest restaurant—a job that has him scrambling for sanity as a tsunami of VIPs and wannabes plead,

Jesse Tyler Ferguson dazzles in Fully Committed.

CASTING NOTES: Finding Neverland’s latest addition is Tony-nominee Marc Kudisch in the dual role of Charles Frohman/Captain Hook. Producer Harvey Weinstein says, “The pairing of Marc alongside our new J.M. Barrie Alfie Boe and the lovely Laura Michelle Kelly will make for a spectacular evening of musical theater.” Meanwhile, at Lincoln Center, The King and I welcomes two new leads: Tony nominee Marin Mazzie in the role of British schoolteacher Anna Leonowens (starting May 3), and Daniel Dae Kim of Lost fame, currently making his Broadway debut as the King of Siam.

Then get ready to have your mind blown in two short hours as actor Tim Dolan—or one of his guides (all licensed/all theatre pros)—takes you on the ultimate behind-the-scenes theatre walking tour in which you’ll pick up enough surprising facts, gossip, and NYC theatre lore to dazzle everyone in your inner circle (plus the inevitable eavesdropper). Sliders, potato skins, and Buffalo wings start things off, while entrées like sizzling shrimp fajitas and teriyaki salmon combine with steaks to form a diverse array of mains. Add an ample contingent of pizzas, pastas, burgers, sandwiches, salads, and sides and few diners will fail to find a favorite. We had no problems. World famous chicken crunch with Creole mustard sauce; Kalbi short ribs with Asian slaw; a stack of crisp Texas tostados crowned by barbecued chicken, cheese, sour cream, and pico de gallo; and three juicy Kobe beef sliders with cheddar,

tomatoes, cucumber, and caramelized onions on a sweet roll left us smiling and full. Nevertheless, we gave our all to a Tomahawk Steak so tender, juicy, and flavorful it could have put any top steakhouse to shame. Music envelops the thousands of people who each week pass through to an energetic world of motion picture, Broadway, and sports memorabilia. Mobiles of model planes rotate above, two cars hang hood-first from the ceiling, and TV screens flash music videos to often-awed diners surrounded by the paraphernalia of movie stars. Star clothing (Sofía Vergara’s dress from the Diet Pepsi ad was behind us), pictures, and movie music pervade the premises. Planet Hollywood itself is much like a big Technicolor musical. The spaceship from Independence Day dangles above, along with a parachute, while the TV screens switch to Marlon Brando in a scene from On the Waterfront or Gene Kelly doing his Singing in the Rain dance sequence. All of this fuses into a visual and audio extravaganza that can easily cause patrons to forget that this is, after all, a restaurant—and a very good one.

Food is not an afterthought here...

Soaring ceilings meet legendary beef at Benjamin Steak House.

BENJAMIN STEAK HOUSE The staff at the stunningly beautiful Benjamin Steak House is courteous, accommodating, and knowledgeable of a menu that includes everyone’s favorites—and not just meat. Sirloin, filet mignon, lamb, and veal chops are all dry-aged in their own aging box. Seafood items include Chilean sea bass, Norwegian salmon, yellowfin tuna, and lobster, for the best of both dining worlds. Sumptuous desserts provide the perfect finish. 52 E. 41st St. (btw. DARBAR Darbar’s sleek, narrow eastside duplex boasts a classy, quiet milieu. Its upstairs dining room is a place of glazed brick walls, high ceilings, and smooth, sophisticated service. A diverse menu combines traditional Indian favorites (curry, korma, vindaloo, biryani, tikka, tandoori) with fine fusion creations (trans-ethnic Maine crab cakes, potato croquettes stuffed with goat cheese). 152 E. 46th St. (btw. Third & Lexington Aves.), 212-681-4500; darbarny.com

AN’NAM If you’re looking for a great value in the Theatre District, head to An’Nam, which serves up a tasty fusion of Japanese and Vietnamese for lunch and dinner seven days a week. The menu neatly divides into the two cuisines. On the Japanese side, you’ll find favorites like dumplings, skewers, and tempura, plus super-fresh sushi and sashimi. Spring rolls, beef noodle soup, stir-fries, and curries head up the Vietnamese list. Look for plenty of low-price lunch specials, including teriyaki bento boxes. Service is friendly and the space is stylish, contemporary, and right in the middle of everything. 234 W. 48th St. (btw. Broadway & Eighth Ave.), 212-247-8318, annamnyc.com CANTON LOUNGE Serving excellent Cantonese fare, Canton Lounge is one of the best choices in the heart of Chinatown. An extensive menu includes a large assortment of soups, dim sum, seafood, chef’s specials, shellfish (including hard-to-find abalone) Szechuan-style spice, noodle and rice dishes, Peking duck, and much more. Enjoy fourcourse set menus at a very affordable price. 70 Mott St. (Canal St.), 212-219-8066, cantonlounge.com PATSY’S Patsy’s Italian Restaurant by the Scognamillo Family is a warm, white-tablecloth spot with a great menu of traditional Italian dishes. A Theatre District staple since 1944—and known as Frank Sinatra’s favorite restaurant—celebrities, theatergoers, and families fill the tables. Patsy’s has had only three chefs, the late Patsy himself, his son Joe Scognamillo, and Joe’s son Sal, who has manned the kitchen for the past 30 years. 236 W. 56th St. (btw. MOLYVOS & OCEANA If you want a multigenerational American success story, the restaurant business is a good place to look. Case in point: the Livanos Restaurant Group, which includes two Theater District favorites. Molyvos is known for its genuine Greek cuisine and warm welcomes for larger tables; Oceana is a high-end, fine-dining seafood establishment with a stellar wine list. Irvina Lew of City Guide sat down with Proprietor Nick Livanos to learn more. Q. Who are your clients? A. Our guests include out-of-town visitors, local New Yorkers, and regulars who work in the neighborhood. Q. Each restaurant has a different concept, is there something in common? A. They value and serve the freshest ingredients; each restaurant in New York City has a purchaser who goes to the fish market daily. Q. How important is your bar business? A. Oceana has a large bar with 7,500 bottles in a local-tointernational wine cellar; Molyvos, with 580 bottles, has the largest all-Greek wine list in the country. NY faves Molyvos (top) and Oceana (bottom). Q. How do you manage to have long-term relationships with chefs and employees? A. We treat everyone like family, which is why we’re able to create so many longstanding relationships. For example, General Manager Paul McLaughlin arrived at Oceana, day one, 23 years ago. Carlos Carreto, the Executive Chef at Molyvos, has been with the restaurant for the last 17 years.

At this “elite” East Midtown sibling to Benjamin Steak House, “off-the-boat-delicious” seafood is offered alongside “scrumptious” beef (natch) and an “extensive wine list”; it’s “not cheap”, but factor in “impeccable service” and a “tasteful”, “romantic” setting “complete with fireplace” and “gorgeous bar”, and fans “love this place” all the same.
