This year marks the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death. The availability of the Bard’s work centuries after he put pen to paper is largely thanks to the First Folio, the inaugural published collection of the plays. Only 233 copies of the Folio, which was published in 1623, remain; luckily, one is making its way to the neW-York HisToriCaL soCieTY as part of the exhibition First Folio! the Book thAt gAve us shAkespeAre. Published seven years after Shakespeare’s death, the Folio contains 36 plays grouped into the now-familiar categories of “Comedies,” “Tragedies,” and “Histories” for the first time. Eighteen of those plays had never previously been published and have been preserved through the Folio, including Julius Caesar, Twelfth Night, and Macbeth. This exhibition provides a rare chance to see this pivotal publication; you’ll also find the largest Picasso painting in the U.S., a pamoramic film of New York, and The Art and Whimsy of Mo Willems at a visit to this fascinating institution. 170 Central Park W. Cover Story Circle Line Says Hello to Brooklyn—And All of NYC!

Get up close and personal with the Statue of Liberty on a Circle Line cruise.

For more than 70 years, Circle Line has been showing guests the best sights of NYC, including the only cruise that takes visitors and locals alike all the way around the island of Manhattan: Circle Line’s Best of NYC Cruise. In 2016, it’s full speed ahead, as Circle Line launches into the summer with exciting new offerings and options. In addition to its famous sightseeing cruises, Circle Line has recently added a new multilingual tour app, the summer concert series Circle Live, and a new cruise dubbed Hello Brooklyn—NYC’s first dedicated ride to the borough. Circle Line’s first official mobile app, the Circle Line Skyline Navigator, was designed for locals and tourists alike to explore 30 of the most iconic sights of the city. The easy-to-use app brings the skyline to life with content in seven languages: English, Mandarin, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, and German. The navigator includes text, audio, photos, and enhanced video content to take guests “beyond the boat.” For example, guests no longer need to wait months, fight crowds, or huff and puff up 20 flights of stairs to 24 www.cityguideny.com

get views from the Statue of Liberty’s crown—now they can climb virtually for sweeping views of lower Manhattan using the app’s enhanced “view from the top” feature! Guests can also experience “future vision” and watch as the transforming NYC skyline digitally unfolds, for example, through a video rendering of the Hudson Yards development as it appears to be built before their eyes. These features bring the sights to life in a way few people are able to experience. Also new this summer is Hello Brooklyn, a professionally narrated, two hour cruise, which sails daily at 2:30pm from Pier 83 on 42nd Street, offering rich history and insider info on NYC’s hippest borough. Guests cruise down the Hudson River, make a quick pass to see the Statue of Liberty, and then cut east to hug the Brooklyn shoreline, from historic Bay Ridge up to the happening

neighborhood of Williamsburg. A major highlight is sailing under the spectacular spans of the Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Williamsburg bridges. The cruise returns to Pier 83 along the Manhattan side, providing sweeping 360-degree views of the New York skyline all the way. Onboard, guests can purchase food and drink from Brooklyn’s famed artisanal vendors, including Brooklyn Brewery, Coney Island Brewery, Brooklyn Gin, Brooklyn Cupcake, Blue Marble Ice Cream, Brooklyn Cured, and cheesecakes from Junior’s. The cruise coincides with the arrival of two brand-new, three-level sightseeing boats. Of course, the summer months also amp up the need for speed! Adventurous types should check out The BEAST Speedboat, powered by Circle Line, cruising now from Pier 83. The speedboat roars within 100 feet of the Statue of Liberty at around 45 mph, and is perfect for thrill-seekers of all ages. Rides run daily, 10am-6pm, every hour on the hour (weather permitting). Children must be at least 40” tall. There’s nothing more magical than listening to music on the water, with a drink in your hand and the breeze in your hair. The summer’s floating openair concert series Circle Live will feature live music, from DJ sets to rock, indie, hip hop, R&B, country, and jazz. Circle Line also recently rolled out the red carpet for its upgraded Circle Line Premier class of service, which includes line-skipping privileges, a shaded pre-boarding lounge, an exclusive inside area with cushy upgraded seats, a private outdoor patio, and dedicated wait service from the onboard café and bar. Circle Line Premier is available on Best of NYC, Landmark, Liberty, and Harbor Lights cruises, as well as Hello Brooklyn. Ready to cruise? Book your tickets online directly through Circle Line—the only way to get reserved tickets for your exact date and time—visit circleline42.com.

GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM

László Moholy-Nagy, A 19 (1927)

Housed in an iconic Frank Lloyd Wright spiraling building, The Guggenheim Museum contains one of the world’s finest collections of modern and contemporary art, including works by Picasso, Matisse, and Modigliani. The museum’s newest exhibition (opened May 27) is the first comprehensive retrospective in nearly 50 years of the work of pioneering artist and educator László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946). Moholy-Nagy: Future Present examines the full career of the utopian modernist who believed in the power of art and technology as a vehicle for social transformation and the betterment of humanity. The presentation brings together more than 300 works, some of which have never before been shown publicly in this country. 1071 Fifth Ave. (89th St.), 212-423-3500, guggenheim.org

MUSEUM OF JEWISH HERITAGE— A LIVING MEMORIAL TO THE HOLOCAUST Lower Manhattan’s Museum of Jewish Heritage celebrates the lives and traditions of both those who survived and those who perished in the Shoah. The museum’s three-story Core Exhibition doesn’t shy from chronicling atrocity, but it also serves as a testament to the strength and perseverance of Jewish culture. Don’t miss artist Andy Goldsworthy’s beautiful living memorial, Garden of Stones. 36 Battery Pl. (1st Pl..), 646-437-4200, mjhnyc.org MORGAN LIBRARY & MUSEUM Just a 10-minute walk from Grand Central Terminal, the Morgan Library & Museum serves as a museum, research library, musical venue, architectural landmark, and historic site. Now on display, Dreams in Dust: The Pastels of Lucas Samaras ranges from dreamlike seascapes and interiors to self-portraits, nudes, and still lifes, created by the Greek artist between 1958 and 1983. Opening June 3rd is Rembrandt’s First Masterpiece, which features the work Judas Returning the Thirty Pieces of Silver, completed when the Dutch painter was just 23 years old. 225 Madison Ave. (btw. 36th & 37th Sts.), 212-685-0008, morganlibrary.org

See for miles and miles from the incomparable heights of One World Observatory. There’s only one tallest. Only one strongest. And only one destination selected as the Best New Attraction in the World. These superlatives belong to One World Trade Center, and its pinnacle, the one World observatory, rising over 100 stories in the sky. With an attraction this popular, OWO’s alltimed-entry system is a major advantage. Computerized ticketing ensures wait times are always kept manageable. You can buy your ticket on the spot, or in advance online. You’ll see some fast facts as you make your way to the elevators, confirming the superlatives: at 1,776 feet, One World Trade is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere; with over 45 tons of steel and a unique concrete core, it’s the strongest building in the world. After a minute’s ride and a short video, you’ll hit the Discovery Level (the main observatory), with 360° sights of the city and beyond. It’s all here, from the rivers to the harbor, from the Statue of Liberty to the Empire State Building. Jersey and Queens recede in distant horizons. Helicopters zip by like hummingbirds, well below the floor-to-ceiling windows. The skyscrapers of Lower Manhattan—some of which once claimed title to the tallest building in the world—cluster below your feet like toys. Observatory hours daily are 9am-8pm, with the last ticket sale at 7:15pm. Admission is $32 for adults, $30 for seniors above age 65, and $26 for children between ages 6 and 12. Celebrity Profile: Jesse Tyler Ferguson By GRIFFIN MILLER

Joan Marcus

Fully Committed, starring Jesse Tyler Ferguson, is Broadway’s only solo show and one that requires a triple shot of adrenaline just to keep up with it. It also packs a hard wallop of hilarious. Ferguson’s key role is that of Sam, an actor who works in the basement of a “ridiculously trendy Manhattan restaurant” answering a non-stop reservation line, the needy/chatty chef’s direct line, and, whenever possible, his cellphone. Ferguson also plays every hysterical/ demanding reservation seeker and assorted others: we’re talking 40 characters.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson dazzles in Fully Committed.

t

When not acting on Broadway, Ferguson works in L.A. on the ridiculously successful sitcom Modern Family, for which he’s amassed five Emmy nominations playing Mitchell Pritchett. Thus, the West Coast beckons and his limited Broadway run will end on July 24th. So, this is how Jesse Tyler Ferguson chose to spend his summer vacation— wow...and thank you, thank you, thank you! CG: The show has you bouncing off the walls...what do you do to maintain that sort of onstage energy eight performances a week? JTF: The show itself is a 90-minute cardio routine but I have been working with

a trainer to stay conditioned. I used to love going out and grabbing a few drinks with friends after a performance but I had to really cut back with this show. I can’t risk a hangover with this one! CG: What would you say is your favorite moment in the show? JTF: I love the moments later in the play when Sam starts to win his power back. The audience seems to really respond to that shift and it’s fun to ride. I also get to cuss a lot as the chef. It’s fun yelling the F bomb on a Sunday at 3pm. CG: Which character—other than Sam— do you find most interesting/fun to play? JTF: It’s like choosing a favorite child when I’m asked this question. The answer constantly shifts depending on my mood. Recently I’ve enjoyed playing Judith Rush, my senior citizen. Maybe because I feel a bit tired and sore! CG: Have any of your Modern Family costars seen the show? Feedback? JTF: Ty [Burrell] and Aubrey [AndersonEmmons] came early in previews. I had to apologize to Aubrey for all the F bombs... but she’s seen Cabaret so I think she was okay. Eric Stonestreet came to my opening night and then came again with his mom the following week. Feedback?! I would never ask anyone for feedback! I won’t even read reviews!!!! CG: Are you a foodie? If so, how do you determine a fabulous restaurant? JTF: I am a big foodie. I love trying new hotspots. I’m friendly with several chefs and culinary personalities so I pull from their resources too. CG: Did you ever try to get into a posh restaurant or party, and if so, what were your go-to persuasive techniques? JTF: I’ve pretended to be my personal assistant calling on my behalf...that way if they say no it doesn’t feel like such a direct rejection.

Fully Committed is playing at the Lyceum Theatre, 149 W. 45th St. btw. Sixth & Seventh Aves. For reservations call 212-239-6200 or visit fullycommittedbroadway.com.

NY Theater On and Off the Great White Way By GRIFFIN MILLER puppets and four magical storylines, this charming production keeps even the youngest in your party enthralled—and don’t be surprised if you’re not as smitten as the kids! For Grade-Schoolers on Up: Blue Man Group, aka the messiest, craziest, offthe-wall sensory-rocking show in town... nearly 25 years old and counting; and Stomp, where found objects and street chic collide and percussive beats and dynamic dance moves redefine momentum. For Nostalgia Buffs: I recommend the retro groovy Trip of Love, a time machine joy ride through 1960s music and fashion, covering everything from surf-side shenanigans to the psychedelic scene.

In New York it’s the months of May and June that rock the town’s sizzling theatrical world with celebrity hosts and coveted trophies honoring the shows and artists that soared throughout the past season. From Drama Desk, Outer Critics, Drama League, Lucille Lortel, and Obie awards on up to the Tonys, the red carpets continue to unfurl. Yet even as the statuettes for 2015-2016 are being handed out, new productions are arriving on the scene— some of which will be scooping up these prizes a year from now. Take for example the Broadway revival of the fiercely funny An Act of God—starring Sean Hayes of Will and Grace fame as heaven’s head honcho—in previews at the Booth Theatre...or the recently opened Cirque du Soleil PArAMour, an unforgettable theatrical event in which lavish spectacles from Hollywood’s Golden Age are intertwined with romance and Cirque’s gorgeously executed feats of physical OMG! Meanwhile, if you like your theatre al fresco (and free of charge) you’ll want to put the first summer offering at Central Park’s Delacorte Theater, Phyllida Lloyd’s all-female production of The Taming the Shrew, on your must-see list...not just for the airy venue, but for the finetuned cast that includes Olivier Award nominee Cush Jumbo (The Good Wife) as Katherina, and Tony and Olivier winner/ Oscar nominee Janet McTeer (A Doll’s House; Tumbleweeds) as Petruchio. And should you be on the market for shows that run the gamut from little kid to grownup, I suggest you turn your attention to Off-Broadway, where the selection is far-reaching and fabulous! Here are some critic- and audienceapproved best bets for your theatergoing circle. For the Wee Ones: The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show. With its 75 colorful

Robert Creighton leads the cast of Cagney.

For TMC Fans: It’s Cagney, hands down. This new musical bio captures the man behind Tinseltown’s original tough guy antihero from his vaudeville songand-dance entry into showbiz, to his lovehate relationship with studio magnate Jack Warner, to the love of his life—his wife, Willie. As the title character, Robert Creighton’s channeling of Cagney is a triumph, while the show’s other five actors (who play multiple roles) are outstanding as well.

New York Hospitality: The City’s Best Irish Pub-Restaurants New York may be a hectic place, but there are a few spots in even the busiest parts of midtown where you can relax and enjoy atmosphere, friendly service, and a good helping of the city’s charm. PIG N WHISTLE

A lively scene and tasty fajitas at the Pig n Whistle.

One visit to a Pig n Whistle location will make clear why this pub and restaurant has thrived in the city since 1969. The newest branch is in Times Square, with a comfortable interior finished with tasteful wallpaper, exposed brick, and woodbeamed ceilings. The scene stays lively with music on stage seven nights a week, plus specials like Margarita Mondays, Taco Tuesdays, and Whiskey Wednesdays. Cocktails and craft beer are complemented by hearty burgers and a killer pulledpork sandwich. 144 W. 46th St. (btw. Sixth & Seventh Aves.), 917-639-3864, pignwhistleon46.com

t

EAMONN’S BAR & GRILL Drop in on Eamonn’s Bar & Grill to enjoy a perfectly poured pint from their friendly, knowledgeable staff. Or let them suggest just the right cocktail, glass of wine, or single malt scotch to accompany a meal. They serve fresh salads and Irish pub favorites like fish ‘n’ chips, shepherd’s pie, and filet of sole. The atmosphere is easy-going and hospitable, providing a

contemporary and upbeat outing in the city. 9 E. 45th St. (btw. Fifth & Madison Aves.), 212-867-9013, eamonnsnyc.com PJ MORAN’S For shoppers needing refreshment, PJ Moran’s is perfectly located near Saks Fifth Avenue, plus all the midtown attractions like St. Patrick’s and Rockefeller Center. Corned beef sandwiches, fresh Maine lobster rolls, and traditional fish ‘n’ chips are a few of the highlights from the kitchen. There’s also the house’s famed Irish Coffee, which is worth a visit all on its own. 3 E. 48th St. (btw. Fifth & Madison Aves.), 212-753-6440, pjmorans.com FOXY JOHN’S

A classic burger and more at Foxy John’s.

There are plenty of bars in New York that can get you fed and refreshed. There’s not so many that will make you feel at home no matter what your walk of life. Foxy John’s in Midtown East is that rare exception, with a great beer selection, $1 oysters day and night, and a “Fusion American” menu that delivers much more than pub grub. (Think ale-fried calamari with jalapeño tomato sauce and curry aioli, or the house burger with cooked-to-order flame-grilled Black Angus beef, pepper jack, crispy onions, and chipotle mayo all served on a pretzel bun.) 143 E. 47th St. (btw.
