We can think of one good reason to look forward to the end of the summer, especially if you’re a big-time tennis fan: the 2016 U.S. OPEN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS, held right here in New York City. This will be the tournament’s 136th year, with Flushing Meadows, Queens hosting all the excitement. One of the most prestigious events in tennis, the U.S. Open is the final event in the Grand Slam, following the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. The matches are easily reached by subway; some 700,000 fans attend the U.S. Open every year. Tickets for the biggest matches can be scarce, but with tennis of this caliber, even a warmup rally on a side court can be thrilling. For grounds passes and tickets to the courts, Prominent Tickets can help. Just getting onto the grounds is exciting, and you’ll find a full range of food to keep your energy from flagging. New for this year is a state-ofthe-art 8,125-seat Grandstand stadium, with more food, more shade, and some spectacular architecture, located in the southwest corner of the tennis center. There are 24 sessions in the 2016 tournament, starting on Monday, August 29th, and continuing through Sunday, September 11th, when the men’s final and women’s doubles final are held. Don’t miss this chance to see Serena Williams make another run at history! The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center (7 train to Mets-Willets Point Station), usopen.org

New York’s waterways helped make it the metropolis it is today, but our humble tugboats don’t always get the attention they deserve. The exception is Sunday, September 4th, when THE 24TH ANNUAL GREAT NORTH RIVER TUGBOAT RACE takes to the Hudson. The day begins with a tug parade, followed by the big race, nose-to-nose pushing contests, and your chance to particpate in line-tossing and spinach-eating competitions. Mo Willems’ beloved children’s book characters are distinctly New York, from Trixie’s very first Brooklyn “Aggle Flaggle Klabble!” to the public transit-obsessed Pigeon. The exhibition THE ART AND WHIMSY OF MO WILLEMS at the NEW-YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY brings together original art, sketches, animation cels, and sculptures, all framed by Willems’ life in New York and how it influenced his iconic characters. The show is in an immersive, child-friendly space, featuring an imaginative New York cityscape on the gallery walls, two reading areas, and family audio guides narrated by Willems himself. (Grown-ups will enjoy the museum’s four centuries of history and art: an offbeat, and often surprising, bite of the city’s culture.) 170 Central Park W. Cover Story Life of Pie: Breaking Boundaries with Broadway’s Waitress

Joan Marcus

Well before Hillary Clinton became the first woman to land a major U.S. party’s presidential nomination, the historic sounds of a glass ceiling shattering could be heard throughout Broadway’s nooks, crannies, and rehearsal studios as the musical Waitress announced an all-female creative team: a Broadway first.

Jessie Mueller bakes up a storm in Waitress.

The groundbreaking quartet of women responsible for whipping Waitress into one of Broadway’s top grossing shows are Tony-winning director Diane Paulus (Pippin; Finding Neverland; Hair); five-time Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles, the musical mastermind behind the show’s Tony-nominated score; Jessie Nelson (Corrina, Corrina; I Am Sam), who deftly adapted the show’s script from Adrienne Shelley’s 2007 film; and Julliard-trained choreographer Lorin Latarro (The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time; Lin-Manuel Miranda’s 21 Chump Street). “I’m thrilled that Waitress is breaking boundaries as the first Broadway musical with book, score, choreography, and 24 www.cityguideny.com

direction by a team of women,” notes Paulus, adding, “It’s a historic and long overdue moment for Broadway, and I’m honored to be working alongside such passionate and inspiring women.” The show zeroes in on small-town waitress Jenna (Tony winner Jessie Mueller), whose less-than-desirable marriage to an abusive husband (Earl, played by Tony-nominee Nick Cordero) is counterbalanced by 1) her ability to bake amazing pies with names that tend to reflect her life’s cockeyed trajectory (“White Knuckle Cream Pie,” e.g.); and 2) her circle of friends at the diner where she waitresses, especially her fellow waitresses: prickly Becky (Keala Settle) and nerdy Dawn (Jenna Ushkowitz, who you’ll recognize from her role on Fox’s Glee). When Jenna learns she’s pregnant (“Betrayed by My Eggs Pie”), her imperfect day-to-day existence becomes a showdown of emotions and decisions: tell or don’t tell/dump or don’t dump Earl (“My Husband’s a Jerk Chicken Pot Pie”); have an affair/don’t have an affair (“Pursuit of Happiness Pie”) with her married OBGYN (Drew Gehling); enter the National Pie Bake Off in a nearby town (“Jumping Without a Net Bottomless Pie”) that would give her the money to revamp her life (“Getting Out of the Mud Mud Pie”)...or let insecurity stand in the way: “My pies are good but I’m no Sara Lee,” Jenna argues. Indeed, doubts, fears, and imperfections haunt pretty much all the characters inhabiting this uniquely human and wonderfully uplifting musical. In the end, it’s a play about imperfect

“Uniquely human and wonderfully uplifting...”

people seeking happiness in large or small doses...and the highs and lows they encounter along the way. Prominent in this regard is Dawn’s reticence to forego TV dinners for dating—in this case Ogie, played by Tony-nominee Christopher Fitzgerald—an endearing customer, so smitten by the self-effacing Dawn that he declares his love with full-blown musical comedy panache in the show-stopping

first act number “Never Getting Rid of Me.” How could Dawn resist? And while true romance may elude some of the show’s key characters, love does not...which makes Waitress one of those remarkable, heartwarming Broadway success stories, told by women—but with universal appeal. And wait till you get to the final scene....Spoiler alert: it’s a lulu!

The Sweet Smell of Temptation Apparently, it’s not enough that diner-inspired towers of luscious-looking pies flank either side of the Brooks Atkinson stage—a heartless study in diet assassination if ever there was one. The provocateur producers thought it best to up the mouth-watering aspects of Waitress by coming up with an olfactory enticement that’s simultaneously evil and delicious...a kind of “surround smell” that ties into pie virtuoso Jenna’s ability to turn out pie after pie from Act I, Scene I through the grand finale. “I wanted that aroma, and I wanted it desperately,” producer Barry Weissler told the New York Times last April, not long after Waitress opened. As it happens, the best way to achieve a genuine pie scent (apple, of course) was to install a convection oven in an area just outside of the orchestra seating area. Bottom line: it’s a good thing you can buy pie during the intermission...seriously. Waitress is playing at Broadway’s Brooks Atkinson Theatre, 256 W. 47th St. For tickets call 877-250-2929 or visit waitressthemusical.com.

Walk in to this renovated 1904 firehouse in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood and you’ll be greeted by real city firemen who are passionate about the museum, its history, and your enjoyment. Among its many fascinating and important artifacts is a fire engine built in New York around 1790.

Home to transit lore and memorabilia, the New York Transit Museum is housed in an authentic 1930s subway station. Their collection includes historic subway cars, various styles of the turnstile, a working signal tower, and an exposed bus interior that doubles as a small theater. The museum also features interactive activities for children, such as a pretend dynamite detonator for excavating subway tunnels and a hands-on fuel station. Closed Mon. $7 adult admission.

WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART

A trip to New York wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the New-York Historical Society, with four centuries of history and art–plus the only Children’s History Museum in the area. It hits the spot for anyone craving an offbeat (and often surprising) bite of the city’s culture easily digested in an hour or two. Quirky, smart, immersive and across the street from beautiful Central Park, it offers a rich taste of the city. Tues.Thurs. & Sat.,10am-6pm; Fri., 10am-8pm; Sun., 11am-5pm. $20; seniors: $15; students: $12; children 5-13, $6.

The most cutting-edge of the major art museums in New York, recently moved downtown. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano, the building itself is worthy of a trip, conceived as a laboratory for artists. Provoking exhibitions and an enviable collection of 20th-century American masterworks provide the baseline, with artist talks, gallery tours and screenings on the docket. Closed Tuesdays. $22, $18 for students and seniors, free for kids under 18.

With over 500 exhibitions, many of them world-famous relics, there’s something to hold anyone’s attention. Robert Ripley himself tracked down many of the items in the collection—he was a long-time presence in New York, having moved to the city in 1912 and opened his museum here in 1939. Ripley’s has recently extended its displays to add even more, including a new display of rare Marilyn Monroe memorabilia and “Plane Loco,” a steampunk train that’s the largest matchstick model ever made. 234 W. 42nd St.(btw. ONE WORLD OBSERVATORY

See for miles and miles from the incomparable heights of One World Observatory. There’s only one tallest. Only one strongest. And only one destination selected as the Best New Attraction in the World. These superlatives belong to One World Trade Center, and its pinnacle, the One World Observatory, rising over 100 stories in the sky. With an attraction this popular, OWO’s alltimed-entry system is a major advantage. Computerized ticketing ensures wait times are always kept manageable. You can buy your ticket on the spot, or in advance online. You’ll see some fast facts as you make your way to the elevators, confirming the superlatives: at 1,776 feet, One World Trade is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere; with over 45 tons of steel and a unique concrete core, it’s the strongest building in the world. After a minute’s ride and a short video, you’ll hit the Discovery Level (the main observatory), with 360° sights of the city and beyond. It’s all here, from the rivers to the harbor, from the Statue of Liberty to the Empire State Building. Jersey and Queens recede in distant horizons. Helicopters zip by like hummingbirds, well below the floor-to-ceiling windows. The skyscrapers of Lower Manhattan—some of which once claimed title to the tallest building in the world—cluster below your feet like toys. Observatory hours daily are 9am-8pm, with the last ticket sale at 7:15pm. Admission is $32 for adults, $30 for seniors above age 65, and $26 for children between ages 6 and 12. Kids 5 and under get in free. Admission for 9/11 family members, rescue, and recovery workers is free, and active and retired members of the US military get special discounts. 285 Fulton St. (entrance on the corner Vesey and West Sts.), 844-696-1776, OneWorldObservatory.com

Go Behind the Scenes with Broadway Up Close Walking Tours BY GRIFFIN MILLER

Sascha Reinking Photography

Actor Tim Dolan is blowing the lid off Broadway’s deepest, quirkiest, most surreal secrets...and he’s willing to share them with anyone with a comfy pair of walking shoes and a willingness to explore the underbelly of the world’s most famous theatre district. In under two hours, Dolan chronicles theatrical pioneers—good, bad, ugly, and just plain weird, along with backstage legends involving ghosts and phantoms; architectural oddities (some still in existence); and loads of gossipy tidbits starring celebs from decades past and present.

Broadway Up Close’s Tim Dolan hits all the highlights on his Theatre District tours.

Six years ago, after plunging headlong into 100 years of Broadway history and lore, Dolan established Broadway Up Close Walking Tours. Since then these 1 hour and 45 minute mini-adventures have exploded in demand (they’ve picked up TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence for the past four years) and Dolan’s stable of theatre professionals/licensed tour guides now numbers 14. It doesn’t hurt that the narration is amazingly-cool-tomind-blowing. “I established stories that we’ve dug 54 www.cityguideny.com

up that help illuminate the Broadway Theatre District fully. The same highlights and stops are presented on every tour, regardless of the tour guide,” explains Dolan, adding that what makes each tour guide unique is his or her personal acting stories and mishaps. “Our BUC team is comprised of talented actors, singers, and dancers and one stage manager extraordinaire,” continues Dolan. “Working with different audiences in each and every show we do is the perfect preparation for our ‘one person shows’ on the sidewalks of NYC!” In fact, as a theatre writer and editor I thought I was pretty savvy about all things Broadway before I signed on for Broadway Up Close Act I (“Our Act II and III tours provide a further glimpse into the full, comprehensive history of our 40 current Broadway theatres,” notes Dolan). I confess, as we navigated 42nd Street and neighboring venues, I was severely humbled—albeit highly entertained. And today, thanks to that one outing with Dolan and his iPad teeming with vintage photos of Broadway gone-by, I am a far more authoritative theatrical smarty-pants than I ever thought possible. Even better, this past spring Dolan came out with the official Broadway Up Close Walking Tour Act I Souvenir Book, a beyond nifty recap of the tour (and other stuff) featuring a comprehensive collection of vintage photos and a four-page spread dedicated to each of the 12 theatres featured in the Act I tour. More than a memory jogger (or gift for non-tour-takers), this wellconceived “souvenir” can also be seen as a reference book for researchers and Broadway buffs ($20 when piggybacked onto the $35 tour; $25 when ordered online at BroadwayUpClose.com).

China Grill: A Fusion Pioneer Stays Vital in NYC

BY ETHAN WOLFF

In the high-turnover world of New York restaurants, it’s rare to see a place survive for three decades, let alone thrive. China Grill in midtown has managed to remain vibrant and relevant long after it put fusion dining on the map in New York City. Of course, between an inspiring space, top service, and memorable food, maybe the restaurant’s longevity (and its expansion to destinations as distant as Mexico City and Dubai) isn’t such a mystery.

Soaring ceilings, granite walls, and lush golds and blacks conveying classic New York greet diners. Epic overhead lights look like stylized parasols, while an open kitchen adds energy. Floor tiles quote Marco Polo’s diaries, fitting since the restaurant bridges East and West so seamlessly. (Restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow’s early epiphany was that the menu here could expand boundaries: why not lobster mashed potatoes, or a Peking duck salad?) Settle in and get comfortable as the warm and knowledgeable staff, some of whom have been here since the beginning, lead you through the intriguing options.

There is a smart wine and beer list and sophisticated cocktails; tantalizing spices distinguish a drink like the tamarind punch, made with cardamom and tequila. Chodorow is still the driving force behind the creativity, with innovations like King Crab Dynamite, which puts sweet crabmeat, speckled with quinoa, over an addictive crispy rice crunch. You’ll see Chinese favorites get elevated, like spare ribs, using rich lamb and a sesame plum glaze. Vietnamese influence comes into the “Wokked Shaking Filet of Beef,” with greens, pear tomato, and the most tender beef you’ve ever tasted (sourced from Creekstone Farms, as is all the beef here). China Grill is a great place for sharing, with a mix of small and large plates. Don’t miss the skewers, tender octopus, or rich pork belly set off by five-spice and sweet & sour cherry. A vegetarian can do very well here, as in the eggplant appetizer that plays crispness off the luxury of a creamy burrata, with a miso glaze and a hint of citrus that exemplify the subtle touches that make the food here stand out. Those details also provide more evidence of a place that can pull off the neat trick of evolving with the times, while staying true to what it is.

An inspiring space, top service, and memorable food...

The Sea Fire Grill specializes in contemporary American seafood, with a focus on highlighting the fish itself. The results are clean and honest presentations of the highest quality locally sourced seafood. Raw bar favorites include daily East and West Coast oysters and chilled lobster.
