This year, more than 54 million visitors will come to New York City, and we want every one of you to have a unique and unforgettable experience. THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN AND THE FALL OF NEW YORK at the NEW-YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY presents the dramatic story of the largest single battle of the American Revolution. On August 27, 1776, on the marshy fields of Gowanus and Red Hook, George Washington and his ragtag army of untrained soldiers fought Great Britain’s Royal Army, one of the most powerful military forces in the world. Things did not go well. In the first major armed campaign for the colonies after declaring their independence, the British seized control of the strategically important city of New York. Washington was able to make a surprising retreat that saved the day for his troops and ultimately for the American cause. Through 90 objects and documents, including Hugh Gaine’s printing of the Declaration of Independence, a camp bed used by George Washington during the war, Thomas Paine’s 1776 Common Sense, which lays out the arguments for independence, and a rare hunting shirt that became the first “uniform” of the Continental Army, this new exhibition presents the dramatic story of the near-disaster that played a major role in the making of America. While you’re at the museum, fast-forward to a more modern America in CAMPAIGNING FOR THE PRESIDENCY, 1960-1972: SELECTIONS FROM THE MUSEUM OF DEMOCRACY. An eclectic mix of posters, ads, board games, t-shirts, lapel pins, buttons, running from idealistic to humorous to scathingly critical, will help contextualize the current electoral season. 170 Central Park W. Both directions you can enjoy German beers and bites, along with a brass or polka band laying down a festive soundtrack. Pier 83 (W. 42nd St. & 12th Ave.), 212-563-3200, circleline42.com

Cover Story The Top of the Rock: Still The Tops BY ANDREW BRADBURY

Jaw-dropping views await at the Top of the Rock.

New York is a vertical city. Sometimes it’s hard to admire all of the grandeur from ground level. There’s certainly no place better to take it all in than the Top of the Rock, a stunning perch atop the iconic Rockefeller Center. The multi-level Top of the Rock offers state-of-the-art features such as reserved-time tickets (meaning you won’t need to spend hours standing in line), multimedia exhibits, an indoor viewing area (nice and cozy for colder days), and transparent safety-glass panels that allow wholly unobstructed views of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, the Hudson and East Rivers and all of Central Park (the massive size of which can only truly be appreciated when viewed from above). The observation deck was first opened to the public in 1933 and was reopened in 2005 after a 20-year closure. Exclusive attractions await at this crown jewel of New York sightseeing, including two crystal installations by Swarovski and the jaw-dropping Sky Shuttle elevators. Outfitted with transparent glass ceilings, the Sky Shuttles let riders view their own rapid acceleration through the building’s 26 www.cityguideny.com

shaftway as they zip their way towards the light and open air above. The Grand Viewing Deck on the 69th floor offers unparalleled views of the city to the east, west, north, and south, with visibility reaching some 30 miles on a clear day. The 70th Floor, accessible by stairs or elevator, is the proverbial cherry on top, allowing visitors to experience a 360-degree panorama of Manhattan in all of its glory. This is an open-air perch with completely unobstructed views—no glass or anything. It provides a vantage point unlike any other in the city...or the world. Speaking of romance, this fall the legendary Rainbow Room will kick off LIVE! from the Rainbow Room, a series of intimate live performances inside one of New York’s most glamourous and iconic settings. The impressive lineup features performances by Tony Award winner and star of Hamilton Leslie Odom, Jr. (September 30th); New York Yankee

Visibility reaches some 30 miles on a clear day.

great and jazz musician Bernie Williams and his All-Star Band (October 3rd); and Tony, Emmy, and Golden Globe Award nominee Matthew Morrison (October 24th). Set 65 stories above the landmark Rockefeller Center with panoramic views in every direction, Odom, Jr., Williams, and Morrison will host one-night-only performances for 250 guests. Most every Sunday you’ll find the classic New York brunch taken to new heights at Rainbow Room. Decadent à la carte dining is complemented by dramatic chef stations featuring indulgent desserts, playful entrees, and award-winning brunch cocktails, all within New York City’s most glamorous setting. It’s hard to imagine any other single place in New York that allows for as many cinematic moments as Rockefeller Center. No trip to New York is complete without a blockbuster bird’s eye view—an overhead shot if you will—of the greatest city in the world. The Top of the Rock will give you a new perspective on the city, but be warned: the views just might take your breath away.

For tickets visit RainbowRoom.com. The Top of the Rock is open daily from 8am-midnight (last admission 11pm); $32 for adults, $30 for seniors above age 62, and $26 for children between ages 6 and 12. Kids 5 and under get in free.

There aren’t many attractions that appeal to three generations of a family at once, but Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Times Square is that welcome exception. With over 500 exhibitions, many of them world-famous relics, there’s something to hold anyone’s attention. Robert Ripley himself tracked down many of the items in the collection—he was a long-time presence in New York, having moved to the city in 1912 and opened his museum here in 1939. Ripley’s has recently extended its displays to add even more, including a new display of rare Marilyn Monroe memorabilia and “Plane Loco,” a steampunk train that’s the largest matchstick model ever made. 234 W. 42nd St.(btw. See for miles and miles from the incomparable heights of One World Observatory. There’s only one tallest. Only one strongest. And only one destination selected as the Best New Attraction in the World. These superlatives belong to One World Trade Center, and its pinnacle, the One World Observatory, rising over 100 stories in the sky. With an attraction this popular, OWO’s alltimed-entry system is a major advantage. Computerized ticketing ensures wait times are always kept manageable. You can buy your ticket on the spot, or in advance online. You’ll see some fast facts as you make your way to the elevators, confirming the superlatives: at 1,776 feet, One World Trade is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere; with over 45 tons of steel and a unique concrete core, it’s the strongest building in the world. After a minute’s ride and a short video, you’ll hit the Discovery Level (the main observatory), with 360° sights of the city and beyond. It’s all here, from the rivers to the harbor, from the Statue of Liberty to the Empire State Building. Jersey and Queens recede in distant horizons. Helicopters zip by like hummingbirds, well below the floor-to-ceiling windows. The skyscrapers of Lower Manhattan—some of which once claimed title to the tallest building in the world—cluster below your feet like toys. Ed’s Chowder House Brings Montauk to Manhattan

BY ETHAN WOLFF

The rustic pleasures of a seafood shack meet New York style at Ed’s Chowder House. As you approach this prime Upper West Side spot, you’ll feel the area’s glamour, centered amid Lincoln Center’s cultural plenty. Tucked in to the historic Empire Hotel (built in 1923, evident in the restored terrazzo floors and mahogany paneling upstairs) is Ed’s airy second-floor retreat, with blown-out ceilings and a friendly, sophisticated vibe.

Pass through a pleasant bar area and into the main dining room and let the raw bar catch your eye. On ice you’ll find the bounty of local waterfronts—oysters, clams, jumbo shrimp, and lobster, all sourced from the East Coast, and all prepared within the great Northeastern seafood traditions. Don’t miss the mussels, poached and chilled to max out the texture; the lemon & saffron aioli dipping sauce is as addictive as the shellfish. If you’re going to have Chowder House in your name, you’d better deliver there. Seasonal specials join a Manhattan blue crab version and the amazing Ed’s loaded seafood chowder. Lobster, shrimp, scallops,

and clams jostle together in a broth that hits all the New England keys: hearty potato, rich cream, smoky bacon, and an elegant hint of vermouth. As at restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow’s China Grill, there’s a playfulness in the kitchen. Organic Skuna Bay salmon comes in an everything-bagel crust. The awardwinning Jeff & Zach’s Beach Burger (Pat LaFrieda beef) is available with a lobsterroll-salad topper, taking surf ‘n’ turf to a whole new level. Fried clams are as crisp as their Massachusetts brethren, only cleaner and fresher, amid watercress salad and a warm champagne vinaigrette. New Bedford sea scallops achieve a perfect sear, complemented by an onion sauce and a bright English pea tortellini. A lengthy and considered wine list is ready for seafood. In the words of Marketing & Creative Director JT McKay, Ed’s “evokes that sense memory of a seaside vacation— delicious and bountiful seafood right from the ocean.” Lincoln Center has taken notice, with talent often stopping by after the final curtain. Is Ed’s Chowder House a smart spot for a warm up or wind down on a night of culture? Or is it a salt-air seafood shack transported to the heart of the city? Says McKay, “The beauty of this place is that it could go either way.”

“Delicious and bountiful seafood right from the ocean...”
