Welcome

From the MAYOR OF NEW YORK

As Mayor of New York City, I am delighted to join New York City’s original City Guide in welcoming you to the greatest city in the world. This year, more than 54 million visitors will come to New York City, and we want every one of you to have a unique and unforgettable experience. And to make the most of your time here, experience this city the way New Yorkers do, by visiting neighborhoods in every borough. Spend an afternoon exploring the incomparable Brooklyn Museum or New York Botanical Garden. Visit Chinatown in Flushing, Queens for incredible cuisine and culture. Every borough and every neighborhood has something to offer. Take a walk off the beaten path and explore some of the hidden gems and local spots that make New York City the greatest place on earth. Welcome! Yours sincerely,

Bill de Blasio

Easter in New York brings egg hunts, fine brunches, and a bonnet-filled procession down Fifth Avenue that’s been a city tradition for nearly a century and a half. Celebrate the holiday in true New York fashion with a trip to the EASTER PARADE. The tradition dates all the way back to the 1870s, when upper class New Yorkers would stroll down Fifth Avenue after church and show off the fashionable new outfits they’d purchased for the holiday. Traffic shuts down for the parade on Fifth Avenue between 49th and 57th Streets from 10am to 4pm on Easter Sunday, letting festive paradegoers fill the streets in their elaborate Easter finest.

Cover Story BY GRIFFIN MILLER

Joan Marcus

The Lion King Reigns Supreme!

The African savanna is brought to life in The Lion King’s spellbinding opening scene.

On October 15, 1997, Disney’s The Lion King opened the doors to its first preview performance, at which point the story of Simba—the cub who would be king—staked its claim as an unprecedented Broadway phenomenon: a feast of unbound imagination, stirring storytelling, and pure visceral joy. By the time it officially opened on November 13th, it was already a word-of-mouth success. Today, The Lion King’s reputation as one of Broadway’s most coveted tickets remains intact, as does its status as a show that crosses all generational lines. It is, in short, a musical that manages to mesmerize both children and grownups—even those of the “been-there-done-that-nothing-can-knock-my-socks-off” variety. The reason for this is simple: from the show’s opening moments, marked by the shaman Rafiki’s hypnotic chant “Nants ingonyama bagithi baba” (“Here comes a lion”) coupled with a golden daybreak on the South African savanna, audiences are spellbound. Within moments, the visual ante is quadrupled with the rapturous arrival of bounding animals: birds soaring, gazelles leaping, zebras, lions, giraffes, and on and on…a brilliantly abstract menagerie that beckons theatergoers to enter the “Circle of Life.” It’s safe to assume that most visitors to this Tony-winning musical became 28 www.cityguideny.com

acquainted with the characters of Musfasa, Nala, Timon, Pumbaa, Zazu, Scar, etc. through Disney’s successful 1994 animated film of the same name. And while the movie remains a beloved staple in countless family DVD collections, anyone who has seen both versions will readily admit that the artistry of the stage show launched the story into a compelling new dimension. Director Julie Taymor, who also designed the costumes and collaborated with Michael Curry to create the show’s creature-defining masks and puppets, used the film’s animated characters as a jumping-off point. Describing them as “expressive” and “very human animals,” she went on to note, “I had to play with keeping some of the ‘character’ of the Disney characters, so that they’re recognizable. But then I was also very inspired by African masks… [and] because we’re doing three-dimensional theatre, I didn’t want the faces to look flat… So I used texture and organic materials, fibers, wood—things that would make it less cartoon-like.” To ensure the actors’ facial expressions wouldn’t be lost, the masks in The Lion King, like many African masks, are worn over the head, leaving the performer free to register a wide range of emotions for what Taymor calls the “Double

Event,” that is, the coming together of the human spirit and the mask. Taymor’s incorporation of Indonesian shadow puppetry and Japanese Bunraku puppetry brings yet another exotic layer to the inspired procession of conceptualized fauna that travel the Minskoff stage. The full-blown impact of the show, of course, comes with the addition of the music: a solid gold score that marries South African cadences, the music of Lebo M., and the songs of Elton John and Tim Rice from the movie, including the Oscar-winning “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” and the buoyant “Hakuna Matata.” Along with Richard Hudson’s unforgettable sets and Steve Canyon Kennedy’s haunting sound design, these jaw-dropping elements come together seamlessly. And this being live theatre, a lion’s

share (pun intended) of the kudos go to the brilliant actors, singers, dancers, and puppeteers who provide the show’s life force and conjure its South African soul... eight heart-stirring shows a week! A PRIDE OF PRIZES Altogether, The Lion King has won more than 70 major awards worldwide including: 1998 Tony Awards: 6 • Best Musical • Best Direction of a Musical • Best Scenic Design of a Musical • Best Choreography • Best Costume Design of a Musical • Best Lighting Design of a Musical 1998 Drama Critics Award: Best Musical 1998 Drama Desk Awards: 8 1999 Grammy Award: Best Musical Show Album 1999 Laurence Olivier Awards (U.K.): 2 2008 Molière Award (France): 2

The Lion King is playing at the Minskoff Theatre, 200 W. 45th St. For reservations call 866-870-2717 or visit disneyonbroadway.com.

Rich with artifacts and film clips, MJH is an important institution worth visiting. Don’t miss artist Andy Goldsworthy’s beautiful living memorial, Garden of Stones. Of the two permanent exhibits, In Memoriam pays tribute to the 2,983 men, women and children killed on 9/11 and in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. The historical exhibition tells the story of 9/11 at the three U.S. attack sites and around the world, exploring the events before and after, and the attacks’ ongoing relevance. 180 Greenwich St. (btw. There’s only one tallest. Only one strongest. And only one destination selected as the Best New Attraction in the World. These superlatives belong to One World Trade Center, and its pinnacle, the One World Observatory, rising over 100 stories in the sky. With an attraction this popular, OWO’s alltimed-entry system is a major advantage. Computerized ticketing ensures wait times are always kept manageable. You can buy your ticket on the spot, or in advance online. You’ll see some fast facts as you make your way to the elevators, confirming the superlatives: at 1,776 feet, One World Trade is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere; with over 45 tons of steel and a unique concrete core, it’s the strongest building in the world. After a minute’s ride and a short video, you’ll hit the Discovery Level (the main observatory), with 360° sights of the city and beyond. It’s all here, from the rivers to the harbor, from the Statue of Liberty to the Empire State Building. Jersey and Queens recede in distant horizons. Helicopters zip by like hummingbirds, well below the floor-to-ceiling windows. The skyscrapers of Lower Manhattan—some of which once claimed title to the tallest building in the world—cluster below your feet like toys. Observatory hours daily are 9am-8pm, with the last ticket sale at 7:15pm. Admission is $34 for adults, $32 for seniors above age 65, and $28 for children between ages 6 and 12. Kids 5 and under get in free. Admission for 9/11 family members, rescue, and recovery workers is free, and active and retired members of the US military get special discounts. 285 Fulton St. (entrance on the corner Vesey and West Sts.), 844-696-1776, OneWorldObservatory.com

Broadway Goes Full Throttle for Spring BY GRIFFIN MILLER It happens every spring: Broadway’s riproaring, all-star running of the new show bulls. And April, my theatre-craving friends, is mondo month for taking in previews and openings as the shows stampede towards June 11th’s Tony Awards. As we turn the corner to spring, 2017 is proving particularly fierce with 14 new shows opening between 4/3 and 4/27, half or them musicals. Some kind of record? Probably not, but jawdropping nonetheless. Notably, only two of them are revivals: Hello, Dolly! starring Bette Midler in a role custommade for her show-stopping persona and vocal chords and costar Tony winner David Hyde Pierce, best known to TV fans as Niles on Frasier; and, in the non-musical category, Oscar winner Sally Field and Tony winner Joe Mantello in Tennessee Williams’s The Glass Menagerie. WHO’S WHO

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Two-time Tony winner Christian Borle’s (TV: The Good Wife; Smash) recent Broadway appearance as a rock star William Shakespeare in Something Rotten! hints at a good teaming of actor and role: i.e., Willy Wonka, immortalized onscreen first by Gene Wilder and later by Johnny Depp.

Come From Away: Do not underestimate this 12-person musical if you don’t recognize the mostly-new-to-Broadway cast…this is a show you will love and not just because of its rave reviews, but because it holds a mirror up to the best in all of us. Featuring Tony nominee Chad Get your Golden Ticket for Christian Borle’s Kimball (Memphis). incarnation of Willy Wonka.

While New Yorkers and theatre addicts may be attuned to Broadway’s notables, newcomers tend to be better acquainted with actors from films and TV. Here’s a primer of some of the season’s rookies. Amélie: Tony nominee Phillipa Soo (terrific as Elizabeth Schuyler in Hamilton) takes on the title character played by Audrey Tautou in the 2001 film. 56 www.cityguideny.com

Bandstand: Swing music dominates this new musical featuring Tony nominee/ reality TV winner Laura Osnes (TV: Grease: You’re the One That I Want!) and Tony winner Beth Leavel (The Drowsy Chaperone).

A Doll’s House, Part 2: A small cast packs a stage-cred wallop in this Ibsen follow-up with Emmy winner Laurie Metcalf (TV: Roseanne; Big Bang Theory); Oscar winner Chris Cooper (Film: Adaptation); Tony winner Jayne Houdyshell (TV: American Odyssey), and Tony nominee Condola Rashad (TV: Billions).

facebook.com/cityguideny

@ cityguidenyc

Groundhog Day: This new musical based on the Bill Murray comedy arrives with big buzz and Tony nominee Andy Karl, last seen on Broadway in another film-to-stage adaptation, Rocky. The Little Foxes: Tony winner Cynthia Nixon (TV and film: Sex and the City); Tony nominee Laura Linney (TV: The Big C) exchange roles during this drama’s performance cycle. As for the storyline, it is nothing short of a vintage microscope studying the vitriolic explosion of one family’s destructive greed. Oslo: A powerful collision of talent as Tony winner Jennifer Ehle (The Real Thing) joins Tony winner Jefferson Mays (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder) for intrigue and drama in this political thriller centering on the 1993 Oslo Peace Accords. Present Laughter: Oscar and Tony winner Kevin Kline (On the Twentieth Century; Film: A Fish Called Wanda) plays an actor caught in any number of mid-life crises crosshairs in this first-rate Noel Coward comedy.

Guare’s Pulitzer- and Tony-nominated drama is a reality. And adding to its must-see credentials is Allison Janney, a seven-time Emmy winner, including for work on the TV drama The West Wing and, more recently, the sitcom Mom. Janney (who also has two Tony nominations to her credit) is joined by Tony winner John Benjamin Hickey (The Normal Hewart). Expect sparks as this new production emerges as one of the season’s most electrifying and timely shows. War Paint: Make way for a battle of grande dames when Tony winners Patti LuPone (Evita; Gypsy; TV: American Horror Story; Oz) and Christine Ebersole (Grey Gardens; TV: Royal Pains) face off (I’m talking mascara, foundation, and lipstick) as competitor cosmetic queens Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden.

Six Degrees of Separation: Finally, the long awaited return of playwright John

Julieta Cervantes

Significant Other: Gideon Glick (a serious Broadway up and comer) stars in this heartfelt musical about friendship, love, and understanding. Check out CityGuideNY.com/Theater for an engaging Q&A with Mr. Glick.

Back where she belongs: Bette Midler on Broadway in Hello, Dolly!

TICK, TOCK... A Sunday In the Park With George: A-lister Jake Gyllenhaal and adorable Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford (TV: Masters of Sex) are perfection in this Stephen Sondheim classic—but as it’s closing on 4/23, I suggest you snag tickets now. Highly recommended!

t

Waitress: On March 31st, the multi-talented Sara Bareilles—who wrote music and lyrics for this hit musical— officially took over the lead role of Jenna. Be forewarned, she’ll only be with the show through June 11th! For theatre and ticket information for all Broadway shows, please see our theatre map (p. 58) and theatre listings (p. 60).

A Midtown Jewel: Topaz Noodle Bar

Authenticity. Hospitality. Affordability. These three components rarely come together in one place, especially in a part of midtown Manhattan better known for some of the most high-end real estate in the world. Which makes the genuine, flavorpacked food of Topaz Noodle Bar such an unexpected pleasure.

Step in and you’ll find a warm welcome and a modern vibe. The intimate space is fitted out with sleek furnishings, wood accents, and flower arrangements providing bursts of color. This same crisp, contemporary approach is reflected in the food. Lunchtimes are major draws thanks to a special that runs all the way to 4pm. A two-course meal starts at just $9.95. For part one, choose from four appetizers. Salad, fried tofu, and spring rolls are joined by the outstanding geoy hor cheese, the house’s take on crab Rangoon. A crispy wonton set brings together cream and crunch in a diabolically good bite, with scallion flavor perfectly balanced by a sweet and spicy chili sauce. More than two dozen options appear

on the lunch-special entrée array. Noodles are, of course, major standouts, including a traditional pad Thai, tom yum soup, and the rich yellow curry of the gauy tiew Singapore. Northern Thai flavors are reflected in the khao soi, a curry noodle soup with a complex broth, textured just right to keep you coming back for more shades of onion, pickle, and heat. The dish is completed with noodles two ways, fine angel hair meeting a broad and soft noodle topping. Dinner is every bit as successful. On the lighter side you can get Thai salads like spiced papaya, grilled beef, and the flavor bomb that is labb, served with pork or chicken and packing onion, scallion, mint, chili, lime, and a boost of texture thanks to roasted rice. On the feast side, look to house specials like soft shell crab with garlic sauce, roast duck in tamarind sauce, and goong makham, which tops deep-fried jumbo shrimp with a fresh sweet-and- sour tamarind sauce, plus jasmine rice and steamed mixed vegetables on the side. The drunken noodle is another major hit, joined by an all-star selection of soups, sautées, curries, and eight different takes on fried rice. In a central location that’s ideal for a day of shopping on 57th Street or a visit to cultural standouts like Carnegie Hall or City Center, Topaz Noodle Bar will leave both your stomach and your wallet feeling full.
