David Bowie, the beloved English singer/New York transplant who sang about “Changes” and is revered for perpetually changing his sound and look over a five decades-plus career, is being celebrated in DaviD Bowie is, a major exhibition that is making its final stop at the Brooklyn MuseuM. This first-ever Bowie retrospective includes hundreds of significant objects from Bowie’s teens to his death in 2016, including handwritten lyrics, diary entries, photography, set designs, album artwork, and rare performance material, with many items exclusive to the Brooklyn Museum presentation. More than 60 stage costumes are on display. Advanced sound technology, alongside theatrical scene–setting, animation, and video, provides an immersive journey through Bowie’s formative artistic experiences. 200 Eastern Pkwy. ONGOING When Henryk Ross (1910–1991) was confined to the Lodz Ghetto in Poland in 1940, he was put to work by the Nazi regime as a photographer. Using his official position as cover, Ross risked death to document life in the ghetto and to assemble evidence of Nazi crimes. As liquidation began, Ross buried 6,000 negatives in the ground, of which half survived the Polish winter to be reclaimed by Ross himself. MeMory UneartheD: the LoDz Ghetto PhotoGraPhs of henryk ross at the MuseuM of Jewish heritage assembles more than 200 of these images, joined by artifacts and audio testimonies, to provide a rare glimpse of a lost time. 36 Battery Pl. The decades-long conflict known as the Vietnam War was a daily fact of American life for so long, and divided the country so bitterly, it seems incredible that over half a century has passed since our major military involvement in it began—and that two generations have come of age since it ended. It is to those generations that the NEW-YORK HiStORiCAl SOCiEtY’s sweeping, artifacts-laden exhibition ThE VIETNAM wAR: 1945-1975 is directed, though those who lived through the era will find plenty to engage them too, in a panoply of photos, art, documents, film clips, and objects great and small. 170 Central Park W. Cover Story The Play That Goes Wrong Gets It Exactly Right
Jeremy Daniel
By Meryl Pearlstein
Alex Mandell and Amelia McClain ready a smooch in the Olivier and Tony Award winning The Play That Goes Wrong. I suspect the writers of The Play That Goes Wrong had a bit of trouble coming up with a name for their fabulously frenetic show. I mean, it could’ve easily been called “The Script That Goes Wrong,” “The Set That Runs Amok,” or “The Cast That Couldn’t Shoot Straight.” Still, in terms of comic genius, everything about the production is very, very right. With the perfect dose of slapstick shtick and zany twists, this Olivier-winning farce arrived on Broadway via the tripartite collaboration of two Henrys (Lewis and Shields) and one Jonathan (Sayer). Their script, under the savvy direction of Mark Bell, effectively turns unsuspecting theatregoers into the opening night audience of a playwithin-a-play: Susie H.K. Brideswell’s The Murder at Haversham Manor presented by The Cornley University Drama Society. British humor can be hit or miss when it crosses the pond. But when it succeeds it’s a welcome respite from the outside world —in this case by offering a dizzy array of physical dexterity and flawless verbal choreography that have theatregoers reacting not only with howls of laughter, but spontaneous applause throughout. Even pre-show, an assortment of subtle (and not so subtle) wink-wink-nudge-nudge moments unfold, setting the stage for the craziness ahead. Mark Evans, the only Brit in the eightperson cast, honed his comedic chops in The Book of Mormon (U.S. tour) after a career marked by musicals like Spamalot,

Wicked, and Ghost on London’s West End. In his Broadway debut, Evans plays Chris Bean, President of The Cornley University Drama Society and the whodunit’s director, as well as the character of Police Inspector Carter. Evans believes the show is such a hit thanks to its mix of audible and physical innuendo delivered by a ridiculously talented cast—and a Tony-winning set by Nigel Hook seemingly constructed to steal the show. “I learned a lot by watching Monty Python and Faulty Towers when I lived in England, and by acting in Spamalot. John Cleese was my idol,” says the Welsh-born actor, who bears a resemblance to a young Mr. Cleese. “I do my best to channel him while also bringing my own interpretation to both Chris and the Inspector.” He goes on to note that playing two characters gives him an outlet to rage at other characters—and even the audience “…when needed,” adding that he sees the audience as being as much a part of the show as the players, with theatregoer reactions turning every performance into a oneof-a-kind outing. The current cast, all or whom signed
The perfect dose of slapstick shtick and zany twists
on last September, hums like a well-oiled ensemble amid this manic romp in which every prop and set piece poses a personal threat at any given moment. There’s Annie (Ashley Bryant), the adorable stagehand who turns into the least likely of divas; Max (Alex Mandell), who transforms into a gleeful ham at the sight of the audience; Jonathan (Jonathan Fielding), as the dearly departed; Sandra (Amelia McClain), playing the femme fatale fiancé of the deceased; and Sandra’s dashing, albeit confused, brother Robert (Clifton Duncan). Riding the fringe of this upper class menagerie is a gardener who works strangely vampire hours; a manservant (Harrison Unger), whose inability to remember his lines leads him to create a new lexicon, intelligible only to himself; and Trevor (Akron Watson), the guy behind the show’s sound and lighting, who can’t quite stay focused.
These players muddle through disaster after Haversham Manor disaster with relentless spunk and a shared unwavering objective: to finish the play. “I’m lucky in the sense that things happen to me, or around me, while everyone else is physically involved in the success of this disastrous play,” says Evans, citing his character’s ability to stay collected in the face of multiple fiascos. As for audiences, suffice to say The Play That Goes Wrong invites everyone—kids to seniors—to return again and again, if only to to pick up on what they might have missed in the rapid-fire mayhem. Or just to relive the funniest show on Broadway—standing ovation included. FYI: The Play That Goes Wrong opened on April 2, 2017, making it the longest running non-musical currently playing on Broadway.
The Play That Goes Wrong is playing at the Lyceum Theatre, 149 W. 45th St. For tickets, call 212-239-6200 or visit broadwaygoeswrong.com.

Stage Style as You Like It
Ariana DeBose is some hot stuff as “Disco Donna” in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical. Primed to check out New York theatre’s spring collection? Then prepare for a mindblowing convergence of musicals, plays, and big-name players onto that formidable theatrical runway known as Broadway.
JUNIOR DEPARTMENT Starting in the family aisle, there’s a couple kid-captivating musicals with more than a wink of adult appeal: the ebullient, giggle-at-every-undersea-turn SpongeBob SquarePants—super fun with a large roster of rock legends bellying up to the composer list (David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, T.I., Plain White T’s, Lady Antebellum, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, John Legend, plus jaw-droppingly more); and Frozen, Disney’s star-crossed sister saga (based on the hit film), buoyed by leading ladies Patti Murin—a delightfully etched Anna—and Caissie Levy (Elsa), who soul-stirs the socks off of the show’s signature number, “Let It Go.” And I don’t have to tell you how many young ladies arrive in Frozen fashions.
ONE WORD: PLASTICS As for the “fetch” crowd, teens through 20-somethings are literally (make that “literally” in air quotes) getting their musical-adaptation-of-a-fierce-film fix courtesy of comedy diva Tina Fey, the force field behind Mean Girls in both of its incarnations. What was celluloid gold for Paramount in 2004 is platinum entertainment on today’s Great White Way. With the addition of social media and a
58 www.cityguideny.com
show-stopper of a score by Fey’s husband, Jeff Richmond (music), and Legally Blonde alum Nell Benjamin, this clique-infested world of contemporary high school comings, goings, and comeuppances is, like, the absolute “now” show to know.
CRANK UP THE JUKEBOX As for the other two spring debut musicals, think “jukebox”—but not from the same retro diner. There’s Escape to Margaritaville: A smorgasbord (or buffet, if you must) of Jimmy Buffet songs, beach-blanket ambience, campy romancing, and dancing, with Mr. Buffet’s own tequila-laced drinks at the colorful lobby bar. On the flip side comes the highly anticipated/buzz-savvy Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, a bio of the undisputed Queen of Disco, starring Tony-winner LaChanze (The Color Purple) as “Diva Donna,” Ariana DeBose (So You Think You Can Dance) as “Disco Donna,” and Storm Lever (Freaky Friday) as “Duckling Donna.”
FINE VINTAGE Meanwhile, three musicals comprise the revival portion of the season’s songfest vista: Lerner and Loewe’s My Fair Lady, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel, and the not nearly so retro Once on This Island by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. Each has a compelling story at its core along with media (social and otherwise) citing their relevance in terms of today’s #MeToo movement. Interestingly, two of the leading ladies—Lauren

STAR STOKED Are you a fan of Netflix? Do you stream, binge watch, and/or TiVo? Is a typical date night prime time for touching base with your favorite big screen superstars? And to help you cut to your personal preferences, here are some of the celebs you may want to catch while they’re still on and Off-Broadway: --Bernadette Peters, Victor Garber (Alias; First Wives Club), and Santino Fontana (Glee; Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) in Hello, Dolly! --Denzel Washington in The Iceman Cometh (through 7/1) --Jim Parsons (Big Bang Theory), Zachary Quinto (Star Trek), Matt Bomer (White Collar) and Andrew Rannells (Girls) in The Boys In the Band --Glenda Jackson (A Touch of Class; Women in Love), Laurie Metcalf (Big Bang

Ambrose (My Fair Lady) and Hailey Kilgore (Once on This Island)—are making their Broadway debuts, while Jesse Mueller of Carousel already picked up a Tony playing Carole King in Beautiful.

OFF-BROADWAY’S SHEEN CENTER Sparkling with Theatre and Other Cool Stuff
t
Within the past few months I discovered the downtown arts oasis known as The Sheen Center for Thought & Culture, an inspired venue serving up everything from thought-provoking lectures to art installations to concerts and film, and—most important to theatre lovers like myself—a steady stream of shows New York audiences have become obsessed with. (Tickets for their last production, Bedlam’s Pygmalion, were scarfed up in a heartbeat. Which is why I’m determined to spread the word about their upcoming production of The Rainmaker.) Produced by Blackfriars Repertory Theatre, this stage classic—which begat the musical 110 in the Shade— turns the focus on a cattle-raising family living in a drought-ridden town in America’s rural West during the Depression. When a charismatic conman name Starbuck enters the picture, lives change, especially that of spinster daughter Lizzie. Running from April 27th through May 20th, The Rainmaker will be followed by the New York premier of playwright David Payne’s Lewis and Tolkien: Of Wardrobes and Rings (running May 23rd through June 14th), a work centering on the relationship between two authors responsible for creating fantasy worlds that remain as celebrated today as in when they were released as 20th-century icons. For further information on present and upcoming theatre, as well as other Sheen events, visit sheencenter.org/shows. For theatre and ticket information for all Broadway shows, please see our theatre map (p. 60) and theatre listings (p. 62).

Superb Steaks & Seafood at Tuscany Steakhouse
BY Merrill lee Girardeau
For delicious steaks, plus fresh seafood, classic Italian favorites, and scrumptious desserts, pay a visit to midtown’s Tuscany Steakhouse.
THE TURF. Settle into the steak menu first— you’ll like what you see. The steaks at Tuscany Steakhouse are dry-aged in the restaurant’s own aging box to maximize flavor. The signature Porterhouse can be prepared for two, three, or four guests and is sure to knock out you and your friends. Or try their sirloin or rib-eye, if you prefer. They serve veal chops, flour-dusted veal Milanese, and veal Parmesan. Any steak can be served with the house’s tangy Tuscany Steakhouse sauce; lamb chops come with a classic side of bright-green mint jelly. THE SURF. Seafood abounds on the left side of the menu. The cold seafood tower is lavished with lobster, crab, and clams, nestled around cocktail sauce in the middle (yum!). Or take a look at the oysters or Little Neck clams on the half shell. On the Seafood & Pasta menu, go for a guest favorite, linguine seafood. That’s shrimp, calamari, clams, lobster, and spicy marinara on a bed of fresh pasta. A lighter option is the Chilean sea bass, available grilled or sauteed.
SoUpS, SaladS, & SidES. Tuscany’s take on Caprese salad, with fresh mozzarella and beefsteak tomato, makes a perfect starter. Or opt for a wedge salad with bleu cheese and bacon. Have a classic potato dish with your steak—Tuscany has them all! They serve hash browns, baked potato, mashed potatoes, or steak fries. The sauteed mushrooms are stars among the vegetable sides. dESSERTS. All the desserts at Tuscany Steakhouse come with homemade schlag, a supersized fluff of delectable whipped cream and a steakhouse staple. Their layered tiramisu is a classic take on the Italian delicacy and light as air, while the hot fudge sundae is waiting for the chocoholic in your group. Cheesecake makes an ideal New York treat to end a perfect meal in the big city. dRinkS. Tuscany Steakhouse’s wine cellar stands alongside the dining room. The glass walls show shelves and shelves of wines from around the world, including a few giant bottles over a foot high lining the front of the space. The on-staff sommelier will guide you to just the right wine for your steak. The bartenders make a mean martini, on top of a wide variety of classic cocktails. THE SpacE. The dining room at Tuscany Steakhouse stands out with distressed brick and a warm fresco in the back of the room, depicting the serene Tuscan countryside. Full of courteous servers and staff, the space seats 150 guests, including two private dining rooms available for events. Tuscany is conveniently located near The Shops at Columbus Circle, the Museum of Arts and Design, and the southern border of Central Park. The Theater District lies mere blocks away, in case you’re catching a show before or after your meal.
