A Go-To Guide for Get-It-Done Parents
W
hen I was a teenager, I kept a button pinned to the corkboard above my desk: “IF I DON’T DO IT, IT DOESN’T GET DONE,” it read, above a picture of a weary-looking dog. Little did I know then that this is a more appropriate motto for parents than for children. After all, we moms and dads are our kids’ go-to people: They depend on us for everything from scheduling pediatrician appointments and finding the right reading tutor to nurturing their budding interests. Each day, we make myriad decisions about our children’s education, care, activities, and more. But who is in your corner when it comes to tackling this demanding agenda? The answer, I’m happy to say, is at your fingertips—literally. Our All-in-One Annual Resource Guide is designed with your complex life in mind. Leaf through and you’ll find easy-to-browse directories of Queens businesses, professionals, and more, all ready, eager, and highly qualified to assist you with your major parenting decisions. Whether you’re trying to throw a great birthday party or figure out the best school for your child, your search can be swift and easy. (Ditto for finding drama classes, kids’ health care, and much more!) That’s right: No running from place to place, no frantically polling every other parent at the park and on social media—we’ve got an all-star lineup of resources right on these pages. With so much information from cover to cover, I’m confident you’ll want to keep this handy guidebook within reach all year long. While you’re organizing your kids’ lives, how about taking a few steps to make your own life a little easier, too? As you already know, a bit of planning can go a long way. That’s why we’ve included a special section of 10 useful checklists at the front of this guidebook. Prepared with the help of top experts, they’ll walk you through some of parenthood’s trickiest passages at every stage: baby proofing (p. 10), installing car seats (p. 11), leaving the kids with a sitter (p. 12), planning a perfect party (p. 14), getting kids ready for camp (p. 16), preparing for back-to-school season (p. 20), teaching kids basic life skills (p. 18), and helping teens get set for college (p. 21). We also address around-the-house concerns such as gathering emergency supplies (p. 22) and identifying and storing important family papers (p. 23). Add it all up, and what this guidebook equals is preparedness and peace of mind— something every parent I know could certainly use. Because, after all, it’s not just about getting things done; it’s about getting them done right. Wishing you the safest and happiest of summers!

Who: Magic Day Camp What’s New: Age group divisions, which are designed to improve the camp experience for children ages 4-15. The divisions are Hocus Pocus for children ages 9-15 and Abracadabra for ages 4-8. By creating two groups, staff is able to take campers out on trips in smaller groups, providing a better, more exciting experience for the children. Children in both divisions will go on age-appropriate trips to local venues. Older children will go to places such as trampoline parks, laser bounce, and the beach. Younger campers will also spend time doing artsand-crafts activities in the camp’s air-conditioned facility. Want More Info: 216-01 Union Turnpike, Hollis Hills; 718-634-8109; magicdaycamp.com

Baby Proofing Basics Simple steps to make sure your home is as safe as possible for your little one

Courtney Ilarraza, co-founder of Baby Bodyguards, a full-service baby and child safety company based in NYC, shares what you need to do before bringing home your bundle of joy. Remember: You don’t have to go crazy and baby proof the whole house; just focus on the rooms where your child will be. Additionally, purchase babyproofing items that are Juvenile Products Manufacturing Association-certified and don’t use hand-me-down products (you’ll want to register all baby-proofing items with the manufacturer to receive any recall notices). qS ecure furniture to the walls.
qR eplace traditional outlet plates with sliding outlet plates. When
You might think heavy dressers can’t be tipped over, but once the drawers are pulled out, the weight is redistributed. When a toddler or child climbs into the drawers, the piece can topple.
an appliance is unplugged, the outlet cover automatically slides into place. It’s aesthetically pleasing, and the child can’t remove it.
qP ut padding on sharp corners.
A lot of parents have the misconception that every edge should be padded, but it’s just the sharp corners that need it, as they could cause a laceration if a toddler were to fall on the corner.
qA nchor the TV, either to the wall or the media stand.
q Put coat hooks on the wall near the entryway, if you don’t have a coat closet. This keeps
coats and bags out of baby’s reach, preventing him from finding choking hazards or medications.
qS crew latches into drawers and cupboards that contain dangerous items, such as cleaning products and sharp objects. And leave one cupboard, like where you store Tupperware, accessible to your child to explore.

q Run cables and cords through a cable management box. q Set the hot water heater to 120 degrees or lower, if you have access, preventing your toddler from being badly burned if she can reach the hot-water faucet.
q Take an infant-child CPR and safety class with your partner.
q Put a child-proof knob cover on the bathroom door handle and any other off-limits rooms to prevent your toddler from entering unattended.
q Wrap shade blind cords around a blind cleat, if your shades have cords. q Install hardware-mounted gates at the tops and bottoms of stairs; children can potentially fall through pressure-mounted gates.
q Stop using tablecloths when your toddler starts pulling himself up on things. If something is sitting on the table-clothed table and the child pulls himself up on the cloth, that item could fall on the child.
q Rearrange bookshelves, putting
heavier items on bottom shelves and lighter items on higher shelves.
q Install windows guards if your win-
dows can open more than 4 inches.
qM ake sure bannister and balcony slats are no more than 4 inches apart. If they are, add slats in the spaces or install a guard on the inside of the slats, especially if the slats are horizontal, creating a ladder.

Car Seat Checkup The proper car seat installation can save your child’s life.
3
Car seat regulations are hard to keep up with and manage, especially because they constantly change and differ from state to state. Keep this checklist, compiled with the help of Shane Bland, certified car seat safety technician through Safe Kids Worldwide Westchester, and Greg Durocher, child passenger safety technician instructor at Safe Ride 4 Kids, wherever you will remember to reference it for properly installing and using a car seat. q Read the owner’s manual. This
should be the first thing you do after purchasing the car seat. If you have questions the manual doesn’t answer, check the FAQ section on the manufacturer’s website.
q Check the expiration date,
especially if the car seat is a handme-down. The manufacturer lists this date, typically 6 years from when it was made, on the car seat.
q Look for recalls on the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website, nhsta.gov.
q Find the best location. The safest
spot is in the middle rear seat, which protects the child from impact on any point on the car. If you have two car seats, put the youngest child closest to the driver.
q Determine the direction your child should face. Safe Kids
Worldwide recommends children stay rear facing as long as is comfortable. A rear-facing car seat protects the child in the case of a front-facing crash, and prevents whiplash in the case of a rear-end accident.
where the strap goes through on the back of the car seat should be at or below the child’s shoulders. This prevents the child from sliding up the back of the car seat in the event of a forward crash. In a forward-facing, five-point harness car seat, the strap should go through a hole that is at or above the child’s shoulders. This ensures your child will lean into the seatbelt in the event of a forward crash rather than having the seatbelt compress his spine.
Do you think your child is big enough to safely stop using a booster seat? Use the NHSTA’s fivepoint test to decide:
q Make sure your child’s back is touching the back of the seat.
qC heck the car seat security after installing. Shake the seat with the strength of a firm handshake; the seat should move no more than 1 inch (measured at the seatbelt buckle) in each direction.
q Ensure your child is buckled in properly. In a rear-facing, fivepoint harness car seat, the hole
q Do her feet touch the floor? q Do his knees bend comfortably at the edge of the seat?
q Does the seatbelt cross her shoulder and the lap belt sit low on her hips?
q Can he stay seated, comfortably, this way for the duration of the trip?

Planning a Perfect Party
Follow this timeline to plan your child’s next birthday bash.
Throwing a birthday party can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be—the key is to start early and create a timeline. Here are some tips to make sure your child’s next birthday party runs smoothly and seamlessly. Six Months Prior q Book a venue. Even if you don’t know other details, settling on a date and time will allow you to plan to what the venue okays.
Three Months Prior q Create a theme. This gives you an idea of what is needed for décor.
q Choose your entertainment. Secure a clown, magician, DJ, or character early to ensure your child’s day will be special.
Two Months Prior q Confirm dates with the venue. Take this opportunity to discuss logistics, such as whether there is a storage area for coats and presents.
q Create the guest list. Sit down with your child and go over who she would like to invite.
One Month Prior q Send out invitations once you settle on a guest list, and confirm RSVPs.
q Pick out the food, décor, and party favors (if you so choose). Make sure to note any food allergies.
Two Weeks Prior q Order the cake. If you’re baking the cake, be sure you have the ingredients. Don’t forget the candles!
q Follow up on unanswered invites. The earlier you find out about any last-minute guests, the better.
One Week Prior q Make goodie bags. If you plan to have party favors, make the bags in advance, and have extras, just in case.
The Day of the Party q Breathe and relax! Be in the moment with your child—after all, it’s his special day!
q Take note of the gifts. Before she rips open presents, jot down who gave each gift to write thank-you cards.
After the Party q Help your child write his thankyou notes—handwritten is always more thoughtful!
q Designate a photographer. You may be too busy hosting, so ask someone else to document the day. Make sure the camera or phone is fully charged!
q Confirm final details. Finalize lastminute details and make sure everything is squared away with the venue. Create a back-up plan, just in case.
q Create a checklist. Write down everything you will need to do the day of the party, and create a schedule for the party to ensure the day goes as planned.

Life Skills to Teach Your Child
3
This timeline will ensure your teen is fully independent by the time she leaves the nest.
Katie Davis, Psy.D., a Manhattan-based licensed clinical psychologist, and Donna Volpitta, Ph.D., founder of the Center for Resilient Leadership, weigh in on what ages kids should start learning life skills. With each new skill, start by scaffolding the behavior: do the task together, model the behavior, and gradually let your child do the task on his own. By 2-3, your child should be able to: q Put dishes in or near the sink

The New
Back-to-School Rules Follow these expert-approved steps for an A+ transition to fall.

Will your child’s first week of classes be calm or hectic? It depends on how you prepare in the month beforehand. Sheryl Ziegler, Psy.D., author of Mommy Burnout, and Fulvia Milite, M.D., director of the White Plains Hospital Sleep Center, share their top tips that will make going back to school a breeze. 4 Weeks Before School Starts q Make sure your child gets plenty of exercise. Make bedtime no later than 10pm, and set a no-eating rule for 2-3 hours beforehand. Stick to a set wake-up time.
q Check that your child’s immunizations are up to date, his medical forms are filed with school, and he’s lice-free.
q Start shopping for school supplies and clothes.
q Do an untimed dry run of a school morning.
q Create a countdown calendar and mark off the days until school starts.
3 Weeks Before School Starts q Begin pushing up bedtime by 15 minutes per night eventually reaching the time you’ll want your child to turn in on school nights. Kids ages 3-5 should get 10-13 hours of sleep; kids ages 6-12 should get 9-12 hours; and teens need 8-10 hours.
q Set up a designated area in your home where your child can do his homework.
q Install hooks where your child can hang knapsacks, coats, and other items.
2 Weeks Before School Starts q Continue pushing bedtime up by 15 minutes each night until the desired bedtime is achieved, or else push up your child’s bedtime cold turkey.
find out the teacher’s policy on kids who are having a hard time separating.
The Night Before q Allow 2 hours for kids to wind down before bedtime.
q Make sure backpacks are packed and by the door.
q Choose and set out school outfits.
q Establish a bedtime routine with no TV or electronics for an hour beforehand.
q Have get-togethers with new classmates and old friends.
q Host a school supply swap. q Arrange carpools. 1 Week Before School Starts q Do a timed dry run of a school morning.
q Finish your summer bucket list.
q Begin planning school lunches.
q Toss any unusable backpacks and
q Attend meet-the-teacher events
school supplies from last year.
q If your child is starting school,
if there are any.

Emergency Supplies Everyone Should Have
This list can go a long way toward preparing you for storms, blackouts, and disasters.
Compile the items in this Federal Emergency Management Agency-approved list and keep them in a secure, dry place; they’ll help keep your family safe and comfortable in the case of an adverse event.
q Water
q Whistle
q Food
q Pliers or a wrench
Aim for 1 gallon of water per person per day for at least three days.
It can be used to alert first responders and others to your location.
Gather at least a three-day supply of nonperishables (plus formula if you have a formula-fed baby).
If a pipe bursts or a gas line is leaking you’ll be able to shut them off.
Looking to round out your emergency kit? q Fire extinguisher q Copies of important financial and personal documents (see list at right)
q Documentation of any prescription drugs family members take
q Moist towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties
q Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Weather Radio
Your toilets may not work if the water and/or power go out—these items can be used for personal sanitation.
They will help you get the big picture as to what’s going on.
q Plastic sheeting, duct tape, and a dust mask
q First aid kit
Buy one or assemble your own so you can treat minor ailments and injuries without leaving home.
The dust mask will help you filter any debris, and the plastic sheeting and tape can patch up any areas of your home that are leaking.
q Flashlight with extra batteries
q Maps of your local area
q Cash and travelers checks q Pet food and extra water q Matches in a waterproof container or lighter and extra propane for your grill
You may need them if your GPS goes out.
If the power’s out, you’ll still be able to see at night.
