BIG HEARTED COWLEY STUDENTS LOOK TO DRESS A GIRL AROUND THE WORLD Year 9 and 10 GCSE Textile students at Cowley are designing and making dresses for the global non-profit organisation ‘Dress a Girl around the World’ which is part of the campaign by ‘Hope for Women International’. The idea of ‘Dress a Girl’ is to make a simple pillowcase dress from fabric or a pillowcase, which will be distributed to a child in need in a developing country. The children in these countries own very little and the dress will often be the only pretty item of clothing that they own. The local community and retailers, including Next have kindly donated fabric to Cowley to help students create quality dresses.

Mrs Chapman, Technology teacher and organiser of this initiative at Cowley praised the textile students’ enthusiasm: “Since learning about this worthwhile cause, students have put their hearts and soul into creating quality, hard wearing garments for girls in developing countries. Their dedication is commendable; we are extremely proud to have such a strong philanthropic culture within the College. “The project has not only developed our students’ sewing skills, but has also highlighted cultural differences and how working together, not only as a class, but also with the local community, can achieve positive results that truly make a difference.

“We can’t thank the local community and retailers enough for their kind fabric donations.” About Dress a Girl Around the World Dress a Girl Around the World is a Campaign under Hope 4 Women International bringing dignity to women around the world since 2006. By providing a new dress for a girl, the initiative hopes to change a young girl’s destiny. To date, the campaign has delivered over 280,000 dresses to girls in 80 countries. www.dressagirlaroundtheworld.com

STUDENTS VISIT JAGUAR LAND ROVER

24 Year 11 students recently visited the Jaguar/Land Rover facility in Liverpool as part of their engineering studies. The students witnessed a robotic and man powered production line in action at the busy manufacturing plant. A car rolls off the production line at a speed of one every 82 seconds! Cowley received positive reports back from the tour guides and fellow members of staff about the politeness and engagement of Cowley students during the visit. The informative and thought-provoking factory tour has given the students real-life experience of their course of study and hopefully has inspired some of the students to seriously consider engineering as a future career.

SCIENCE TAKING PART IN LEADING UNIVERSITY PROGRAMME Cowley’s science department are celebrating after their application to take part in the Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) Chemistry For All programme was accepted. The feat is even more impressive as only six schools in the North West of England were accepted to be involved this programme (and 24 schools involved nationally). This programme aims to increase the number of school leavers with the skills and potential to pursue Chemistry and its related subjects in the future. Cowley students will visit John Moores in June and take part in fun, exciting and informative activities and experiments in the LJMU’s science labs; as well meeting people from many different science professions.

Aims of the Chemistry for All programme •

To engage and enthuse pupils in science, particularly Chemistry and its importance and relevance both to our everyday lives and in finding solutions to problems.

To increase pupils’ awareness of the relevance of scientific understanding and investigative approach to everyday life, and to non-science careers.

To enable pupils to have an understanding of careers and pathways in science, including earning potential and to gain an understanding of the diversity of career options available.

The celebrations continue for Cowley’s formidable science department as their bid for £300 in additional funding to enhance and develop the STEM club within the science department was recently awarded.

The students took part in subject taster sessions and thought-provoking workshops throughout the day, including: Preparing for University interviews, the Built Environment, Forensic Anthropology and Engineering. Live-in-Learn workshop

All Year 8 students recently attended a Liven-Learn workshop which focused on developing enterprise attitudes and confidence. The workshop was delivered in a fun and exciting way which aimed to enhance the learning tools students’ require for effective and independent study with an emphasis on self-reliance and hard work.
