Cowley International College has been presented with a Gold CardiacSmart Award. The College received the Gold Award, the highest level, in recognition of its outstanding contribution to raising first aid awareness and providing Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training. Portable defibrillator kits have been installed in the College for just under a year and since then 32 staff have been trained by North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust (NWAS) on how to use the life-saving defibrillators, including three staff who are trained to deliver defibrillator training to others. Training is being extended to students in the near future as part of the PSHE and Health curriculum. The CardiacSmart initiative has been created by NWAS and The British Heart Foundation and follows the same principles of the Chain of Survival Partnership which works to extend the network of available AEDs to improve access
to them for people who suffer cardiac arrest outside of hospital in the North West. Cowley’s AEDs are registered with NWAS and should an emergency arise in the local area, the AEDs at Cowley can be accessed by the local community. It is estimated that every year in the UK, 270 children die of a sudden cardiac arrest while at school and around 30,000 people suffer a cardiac arrest outside of hospitals. For every minute a person does not receive treatment, their chance of survival decreases by 10%. Principal, Cameron Sheeran said: “We are proud to receive this award. We believe that it is essential that both staff and students have knowledge of how to save a life, from assessing an emergency situation to performing CPR and using a defibrillator. “We are aware that regardless of gender, age or fitness levels, a cardiac arrest can happen at any time and to anyone.”

READING PROGRAMME CONTINUES TO GO FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH! Accelerated Reader, the innovative online program designed to improve reading skills for students in Year 7 and Year 8, has had a significant impact on raising students’ motivation in reading and in raising their reading levels since its launch 12 months ago. Accelerated Reader Achievements: ‘Form Reading Reward’ went to: 7Y and 8W for the highest word counts in each year group. They were rewarded with a special lunchtime treat. This competition has now started for the spring term and so the race is on for each form to win themselves a free lunch on us! Joshua Leyland in Year 7 became a member of our ‘Millionaire Club’ and so received a front of queue pass. He will be attending our ‘mystery’ trip at the end of the summer term with the other Millionaires! Most progress went to: Year 7 Nathan Clark Year 8 Lucy Baugh - superb attitude and almost met target and Ross Ashby - much improved reading approach and commitment to learning. Best male/female went to: Year 7 Lucy McCulley - target 98.7% quiz average Year 7 Leon Finnen - 98.8% quiz average Year 8 Michael Davies - reaching target and achieving 100% on EVERY quiz! All of the above received additional prizes including: front of queue passes and high-street vouchers to spend over the festive period. As well as the form lunch reward for word count, we have now begun the second individual ‘Spring Term Prize Challenge’ which is an Easter egg for any student who achieves their points target!
NEWLY ADDED ACCELERATED READER BOOKS!
THE SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR TWITTERATURE COMPETITION! To celebrate this year’s Scholastic Literature Fair, the Library will be running a fantastic Twitterature competition. Twitterature is the art of summing up a book in fewer than 140 characters – often to comic effect. A quick example of Twitterature to inspire you: “OMG I’m a WIZARD! And my parents are DEAD WIZARDS! Off to magic boarding school. PEACE” Five lucky winners will each receive a £5 book token to spend at the fair! To enter the competition simply hand your entries in to the Librarian. All entries will be displayed in the Library throughout February. The Twitterature winners will be announced on Wednesday 26th February. About the Scholastic Literature Fair The book fair will provide students opportunity to browse and buy the latest books from top publisher, Scholastic. Please note that World Book Day book tokens will be accepted at the fair. The Scholastic Book Fair will be in the Main School Library the first week after half-term (Monday, 24th – Friday, 28th February). Did you know? Buying a book at the Scholastic Book Fair not only offers students an exciting new reading opportunity it also supports the College Library.

WINTER WARMER HAMPERS FOR AGE UK
Congratulations to the following Year 12 students who have recently achieved excellent results in their AS rehearsal examinations: Connor Cook, Liam Dodd, Michael Hughes, Thomas Lea, Billie Santos, Philip Swift and Rachel Unsworth. Special mention goes to Thomas Lea who scored 3 A grades and 1 B as well as Billie Santos, formerly of Sutton Academy and Phil Swift, formerly of Haydock High School for achieving great results despite a change of environment.
Congratulations to Heather Orford from 9O for winning the College’s recent Art Competition with her portraits. Heather wins a trophy and a £20 High Street Voucher.
A group of Year 10 Cowley students recently created ‘Winter Warmer’ hampers for Age UK. Rugby Year 10 student, Chris Follin, has been selected for the England Youth 2014 Rugby League Squad. An excellent achievement that deserves recognition. Athletics Congratulations to Year 7 student, Imogen King and Year 8 student, Chloe Orrick, who recently competed for St Helens in the Merseyside Cross Country Championships held at Sefton Park, Liverpool on Saturday 1st February. Imogen finished in a very credible 12th position and as a result of this excellent performance has been selected to represent Merseyside in the Cross-Country Inter-Counties competition. Overall the Year 7 St Helens team finished 4th and the Year 8/9 team were placed 5th.
Eight students, who are part of Cowley’s Enterprise group, were given just a wicker basket, which they beautifully decorated and packed with everything from mince pies and hot drinks through to a cheese and biscuit selection. Julie Wright, Cowley’s Work Related Learning Manager said: “I have been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and creativity of the students. Age UK are Cowley Enterprise Club’s chosen charity and we have worked with them for many years now, on a variety of initiatives.” Kym Smith, Social Inclusion Co-ordinator at Age UK, commented: “The service users who attend appreciate the hard work the pupils have put in to raising funds to produce these wonderful winter hampers especially at this time of year when the cold weather can be a worry for older people and can leave them more vulnerable. We look forward to our on-going partnership with the pupils from Cowley.”
