SUMMER 2015
COWLEY FUN RUN RAISES HUNDREDS FOR CANCER RESEARCH Over 100 staff and students from Cowley recently took part in a 5km fun run around Victoria Park. The run was in aid of Cancer Research. The runners and walkers were supported by family and friends on the day and we are well on track to meet the £1,000 target. “I was thrilled at the students’ dedication,” said Mr Gordon, Assistant Principal and Head of PE who organised the event. “They put 100 percent effort into completing the challenge and as a College we’re really proud to have raised such a sum of money towards Cancer Research.” Visit our website for full gallery of pictures from the event.

SPORTING HONOURS FOR COWLEY STUDENTS
Cowley’s U13 girls have done it again for the second year running and have reached the finals of the Premier League Schools Tournament final to be held at White Hart Lane on Thursday, 21st May. In preparation for the event, the team was presented with Liverpool Football Club branded kit that they will wear throughout the finals. The initiative was created as a way of increasing participation in football.

LIBRARY NEWS Carnegie Shadowing
Carnegie Shadowing returned to Cowley this May. Cowley students are embarking on an epic, hilarious, scary, amazing adventure, where they read their way through the 2015 Carnegie Award short list. The Shadowers will be reviewing each book along the way, as they desperately try to decide which of these fabulous reads is their favourite. The shadowing process will culminate on Monday, 22nd June when the winner is announced and the students will get to enjoy a day of Carnegie short-list related creative workshops, including drama, art, poetry and graphic novel design. For more information about the Carnegie Award or to read about the full short list visit: carnegiegreenaway.org.uk. If you would like to find out more about the Cowley Carnegie Group, contact Cowley’s Library and Resource Centre Manager: Ms Widdowson.
LIFE SKILLS WORKSHOPS The Scholastic Book Club
May 2015 also witnessed the return of the Scholastic Book Club. Students were able to buy exciting young adult titles at special Book Club prices, through the Main Site Library. Moreover, every book bought raised money for the library, as Scholastic provides free stock up to the value of 30% of the total sales made through Cowley’s Book Club. Watch out for future Scholastic Book Club leaflets in order to bag yourself a bargain and support the college. New Book Arrivals:
It has been a fabulous month for new books staring boys: T.J. – Theo Walcott’s fictional teenage football hero – arrived at the library, providing another exciting series for football fans to read. Classic prankster, Dennis the Menace, also hit the shelves with the arrival of three instalments of The Diary of Dennis the Menace and Big Nate, the 11 year old self-proclaimed genius, returned for two more volumes of comic book strip antics.
On Wednesday, 6th May, Year 11 students at Cowley welcomed representatives from a St Helens branch of Barclays Bank who hosted a number of Life Skills workshops. The day started with Barclays discussing some of the major aspects of personal banking, such as borrowing and saving. Some excellent topics about high APR rates on pay day loans, dangers of mobile phone contracts and the basics on how to budget were covered. The sessions were very well prepared and students can visit the Barclays Life Skills website barclayslifeskills.com to view resources and find out more. Cowley is already exploring dates to get the Barclays team back in to work with Year 10 as they move into Year 11 and start thinking about college and the world of work. Watch this space! Big thanks to Barclays and Mrs Wright for organising.
JOURNALISM MASTERCLASS
As part of celebrating the 70th anniversary of VE day, traditional 1940s food was served and Sixth Form Students came dressed in uniform or in 1940s style
The annual Y6 Journalism Masterclass will be taking place on Thursday 21st May. All of our feeder primaries are invited to send four of their most able Year 6 students to attend a special workshop teaching them the art of broadcast journalism. They write, film and edit their very own news broadcasts which are then burned onto DVDs for them to take away and show in school and at home.
1940s Music was played throughout the corridors during lunch and Cowley Hall was dressed in flags and adverts from the war era. The Poem, ‘For the Fallen’, by Laurence Binyon was read by a student and a minute’s silence was held to remember those who fought in the war.
They are helped by some of our Gifted Year 7 and 8 students who did the workshop when they were in Year 6. This will be the third year the workshop has been running and it is always a special event that the students remember.
