COWLEY’S 2013 SPORTS DAY! On Wednesday, 26th June, the 2013 Cowley Sports Day took place at Hard Lane. All participants had been training hard prior to the Sports Day and were excited about representing their houses.

The sun shone throughout the day which encouraged parents and people from the local community to stay and cheer on the competitors and further added to the fantastic atmosphere.

The field was decorated with bunting and the athletes were played into the sports field by the College’s sensational Samba band.

The Sports Day results have been announced and these can be found overleaf.

Sixth Form student, Beth Cammack was also nominated for the Unsung Hero award, in recognition of her selfless and inspiring charity work. The awards, run by the St Helens Reporter, provides local schools with a chance to have their say who they feel deserves recognition for going the extra mile and demonstrating hard work and commitment. Cowley is extremely proud of the students and of the Cowleian values that each has demonstrated.

In Spanish, a whole range of special festivals are being investigated – such as La Tomatina, Dia de Meurtos (Day of the Dead) and Feria de Sevilla (The Seville Fair).

ABOUT THE NOMINEES Charlotte Doyle Charlotte is a Year 9 student who has been a key influence in raising funds for Cancer Research and Make A Wish Foundation. Beth Cammack Beth has helped raise thousands of pounds for different charities, including Willowbrook Hospice, Marie Curie and Help For Heroes. Beth, who also models and takes part in beauty pageants, recently won the Europe’s Perfect Teen title and she uses this as a platform to help with her charity work. GOING FOR GOLD

FOND FAREWELL This term, it isn’t just Year 11 students that are saying goodbye to Cowley, but several staff members too. Closing the door at Cowley for the very last time as they have decided to retire at the close of the 2012-2013 College year are: Mrs Prescott, Mr McNamara and Mrs Hull

Eight students from Cowley, recently took part in a four day, 125 mile cycling ride through the country lanes of Cheshire and Shropshire as practice for their Gold Duke of Edinburgh expedition that takes place in July. The students and staff from the practice are now looking forward to travelling to Holland for four days of cycling. The group start in Europoort, Holland and finish in Zebrugge, Belgium four days later, cycling a total distance of 150 miles.

ST HELENS CCG YOUTH HEALTH FORUM

In the final game against St Cuthbert’s, Cowley worked hard to score in the final minute, resulting in a 2-1 win. Cowley X won the tournament and Cowley Y competed in all matches and finished 5th. Merseyside Youth Games Cowley will be represented in Year 7 / Year 8 Rounders (girls), Year 7 / Year 8 Rugby (girls) and Year 7 / Year 8 Quad Kids (mixed). All teams have qualified, having won the St Helens competitions and are now through to the Merseyside Youth Games. All pupils and staff are very excited about the event. Year 8 St Helens Rounders Tournament

A number of Year 12 students from Health & Social Care, Child Care and Public Services, recently met with representatives from St Helens Primary Care Trust to discuss their experiences of health care services in the local area. Students shared some of their fantastic ideas of how health care services for young people and teenagers can be improved, based on some of their personal experiences. The St Helens Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) were so impressed with their ideas that students then had the opportunity to choose whether they wished to participate in a forum to implement some of their recommendations. We’re proud to announce that Cowley student, Jemma Hughes, has designed the official leaflet for the Youth Forum – and this publication will have her name attributed to the design before being distributed throughout St Helens.

We would like to thank these staff for their devotion and enthusiasm, hard work and commitment. Without them, Cowley would not be the success that it is. Congratulations to you all and good luck in your new ventures. We also say farewell to two of our Governors, Mr Narayanan and Dr Clegg, who between them have over 42 years of commitment and service to Cowley. They both have fond memories of staff and students alike. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their hard work and dedication and wish them a very long and happy retirement.

PARENT / CARER ALERT Have you have returned the biometric consent form for your daughter / son? From September, due to a change in legislation, students without written consent from at least one parent or carer will no longer be able to use this method of payment.

TRIP CONSENT

Parent / carer, please return the Parental Consent form (EV-B) as soon as possible, if you haven’t already. This form covers all ‘standard’ local trips for the duration of the student’s time at Cowley. Permission will still be sought for more adventurous or residential trips.

SCHOOL MEAL CHARGES In setting the budget for 2013/14, the Council made a commitment to increase charges in line with inflation (approximately 2.5%). This will result in increased charges for school meals as from 1st September 2013. The Year 8 team played brilliantly, beating De La Salle, Rainford, Rainhill and St Cuthbert’s. Of note, outstanding fielding came from Laura Rainford and Beth Shepherd. The leading Rounders scorer was Caitlin Pye. The team are now looking forward to representing St Helens at the Merseyside Youth Games.

YEAR 8 QUINTA RESIDENTIAL Approximately half of Year 8 recently travelled to Quinta Hall in Shropshire for the College’s annual activities trip. The fun-packed, three day trip provided a ‘round robin’ of activities for the students to take part in, including: archery, swimming, orienteering, arts and crafts, climbing, raft building, field games and low-ropes. A quiz provided the evening’s entertainment on Wednesday, with some very novel answers - Cumbria is apparently the capital of Australia! Everyone swopped their wet and muddy clothes for something smarter and danced the night away in the disco on Thursday evening – if the students weren’t tired out after the activities, they were after this! The last activity on the trip involved students braving the infamous four-mile Tunnel of Doom on the Friday! Mr Healey thanked the students and staff who made up the support team that helped to ensure another hugely successful Quinta trip.
