GIRLS IN SPORT 2014

In September, all Cowley’s Year 7 girls took part in a Girls in Sport day. The aim of the day was to introduce the girls to the various extra-curricular activities that are on offer at Cowley and to encourage them to lead a healthy and active lifestyle by joining sporting and performance activities. The sessions included: netball, hockey fitness, gymnastics, dance and rugby. The girls rotated around each activity and were shown basic skills in each. Carrying through the healthy theme, all students were given fresh fruit and water at break time to keep them hydrated during the day. The event was run with the help of a group of Year 9 girls who were selected as ‘Sports Leaders’ due to their commitment and enthusiasm towards PE; their roles on the day

included escorting pupils to sessions, assisting staff with equipment and demonstrations, keeping the pupils engaged and taking photographs. The Sports Leaders’ key role on the day was to monitor younger students and to highlight any outstanding effort or performances. All students who took part were actively engaged and thoroughly enjoyed the sessions. Their attitude and enthusiasm was evident right through the day and the interest in the sessions was exceptional. Year 9 Sports Leaders: Melissa Armson, Lauren Black, Rebecca Blakemore, Robyn Bolan, Ellie Farrell, Maiya Gerrard, Lauren Hudson, Megan Mercer, Chloe Orrick, Yasmin Swift, Emily Tye and Shauna Verey.

HOMEWORK

Students who complete homework are more likely to achieve better results in their exams and be better prepared for their next lesson. Homework provides an important intersection between home and College. To help students and parents/carers with all things homework related, we have added a ‘Homework’ tab to the main menu in our website to offer essential information about homework, from how to study to the support that parents/carers can offer.

“A TRULY INSPIRING RE DEPARTMENT”

LIBRARY NEWS Introducing Careers Corner The library is investing in a new section in the main school library, for students to explore and discover the right career path for them. It is never too soon to start thinking about what it is that you enjoy doing in life.

RE PGCE trainees from Edge Hill University were given a taste of what makes a really effective RE team at Cowley International College on September 5th. Trainees met senior staff and heard an enthusiastic endorsement of RE by Principal, Mr Sheeran, as well as to hear firsthand about life after university via presentations from recent RE PGCE graduates. The trainees got to experience life as a teacher by interacting with RE students, finding out from the students what they like to do in an RE lesson, why they enjoy RE and what they have learned from RE. Feedback from this activity was positive and the trainees came away feeling positive and more confident about their journey to becoming an RE teacher. Feedback from an RE PGCE trainee on the day spent at Cowley: Overall it was a fantastic experience. It was truly inspiring to see a successful RE department and meet teachers who very clearly believe in the value of Religious Education.

The popularity of Cowley’s Darts Club for students aged between 11 and 16 has rocketed over the last year, so much so that the college has organised two meetings each week to help nurture the talent of our youngsters. It’s not only sportsmanship that has improved since Cowley students started playing, but also their mathematics skills. Mr Raines, the man behind the Darts club at Cowley, said: “Darts is fantastic for honing maths skills, the game itself is 33 per cent maths, if cannot count you cannot win! The Darts club at Cowley has really taken off in the last year and the talent for the game is impressive, only recently, a Year 12 student became the second player to hit a 180!” Darts club takes place after college on Wednesday and Thursday lunch time – all Cowley students are invited!

The team played six matches without losing any and only conceded two goals in the whole tournament: Vinny Dean, Robbie Graham, Kieran Lewis, Scott Atherton, Jake Rainford, Elliot Kirwin, Tom Lyon, Owen Brookes, Morgan Dearden (C).
