AUTUMN 2015

SIXTH FORM OPEN EVENING: TUESDAY 10TH NOVEMBER 2015

‘MAN OF STEEL’ CONFIRMED AS GUEST SPEAKER AT 2015 CELEBRATION EVENING Cowley is proud to announce St Helens’ ‘Man of Steel’, Paul Sculthorpe MBE, will be the guest speaker at the college’s awards evening later this month. The evening takes place on Thursday, 22nd October at our 11-16 site and is always a great success, but we are sure that Paul’s speech will be a fantastic motivation for success to all present. The awards evening is a celebration for last year’s Year 7 - Year 13 students who have been nominated by teaching staff for excelling in various subjects. Certificates and prizes will be handed out at the event in front of an audience of over 200 parents/carers, Governors, staff and special guests. This year has seen a record number of award winners and is looking to be the biggest awards evening the college has held in recent years.

‘START A HEART’ CAMPAIGN TO RAISE AWARENESS OF CPR IN YOUNG PEOPLE Twenty Four Year nine students took part in a CPR and resuscitation awareness class, fronted by Jane Carnall, Resuscitation Officer at St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust as part a ‘Start a Heart’ campaign. In the UK there are over 30,000 cardiac arrests a year outside of hospital. Jane and the NHS Trust aim to minimise the number of deaths from cardiac arrest by working and educating children on vital CPR and defibrillator training - in essence, lifesaving skills. The programme empowers young people with the skills to cope in an emergency. The skills that they are taught include CPR and they are also introduced to an AED (automated external defibrillator) Mr Middleton, Head of Year nine at Cowley said: “Too many lives are lost needlessly each year because people do not know, or have the confidence to perform CPR.

This critical training that Jane has provided could be lifesaving. Almost 30 students now have the skills to perform CPR and use an AED. In an emergency situation, every second counts. We need more young people to be equipped with the confidence and knowledge to be able to step in and give someone the best chance of survival. “Our sincere thanks go to Jane for visiting Cowley - a visit that we hope is one of many.”

Hollywood hardman, Vinnie Jones is starring in a British Heart Foundation TV advert urging more people to carry out CPR in a medical emergency. This ad is on YouTube and shows how hard and fast Hands-only CPR to Stayin’ Alive by the Bee Gees can help save the life of someone who has had a cardiac arrest. GO WATCH!

FORMER STUDENT STARS IN AWARD WINNING PLAY

RUGBY CHAMPS

DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD VOLUNTEER APPEAL

Year 7 recently became the St Helens Rugby League Champions. The formidable team won all games in the qualifying rounds and met Rainford High School in a tense final that ended in a 6-0 victory for Cowley.

Former student, David Moorst will be starring in the award winning play, ‘Into the Woods’, at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester from 4th December until 16th January. Ironically enough, David is playing the part ‘Jack’ which he also played here at Cowley when he was in Year 11. Tickets & more info: www.royalexchange.co.uk ENTERPRISE NEWS In late September, the Enterprise Club attended the Mid Mersey Age UK ‘Don’t be a Stranger Conference’ at Mansion House, to celebrate work done on tackling loneliness and isolation in the community, that they had been a part off. At the conference, students learnt what various groups had done to tackle the problem and why it was so important. The Morning was rounded off with lunch in the Mansion House Bistro. Your Future Careers Fair A selection of Year 10 students attended The St Helens Chamber ‘Your Future Fair’ at Langtree Park on the 7th September. The fair gave students the opportunity to consider what options are available for them post-16 whilst visiting a variety of stalls run by employers from various industries, as well as Further and Higher Education providers.

Congratualtions to the team: Kyle Cooke, Kian Snape, Callum Slevin, Adam Khan, Jamie Worley, Joe Ashton, Sam McGuiness, Tyler Hudson, Ellis Finney, Charlie Lee, Sam Sherwood, Daniel Marc, Mackenzie Lee, Tom Cummings, James Harris, Reece Leadwith, Kieran Dean, Luke Heaton-Roberts, Cael Parker.

Cowley run a large Duke of Edinburgh programme that relies heavily on volunteers in order to make this opportunity available to all students. Unfortunately, volunteers are in quite short supply at the moment and we are looking to see if parents/carers would like to get involved.

Do you look after someone else’s child under the age of 16 (18 if disabled) and have done this for 28 days or more?

Willing participants would help to supervise and lead groups of students on walks and expeditions.

If so, you may be a private foster carer.

COWLEY FURTHER STRENGTHENS INTERNATIONAL TIES WITH VISIT FROM GERMAN TEACHER The Modern Foreign Languages department at Cowley recently welcomed back Miss Bleckmann who teaches English as a foreign language in Germany. Miss Bleckmann worked at Cowley as a languages teaching assistant in 2010 and returned for one week to work with students across all year groups and to share good practice with teaching staff. During the week with Cowley, Miss Bleckmann worked with students from years 7 - 13 talking about life in Germany as a teacher and sharing cultural information. Reflecting on the week, Miss Bleckmann said: “I am so impressed at the language levels of Cowley students!

“The students take real pride in their learning and they are so inquisitive about life in my homeland and friendly at the same time. “I have thoroughly enjoyed visiting Cowley and in particular sharing methodologies and exchanging ideas with fellow language teachers. “This isn’t goodbye, I hope to return in the near future to see my friends.”
