We had played at the Handsome Woman in Willimantic, CT the night before with Florida=Death, Fat History Month, Ovlov, & Hell Rules. And right now, we’re in the process of moving next door and changing that space into an art gallery, store and also a coffee shop. Are you gaining some square footage, then? Yes, a lot of square footage. The original space, part of what attracted us to it, is this super small building, just eight-feet wide—a long, narrow space. It was just a self-contained building squeezed between two others with a very distinctive round window in front. There were years of driving past it and thinking it was such a cool, strange spot. What could it be? What could we do there? And that drove the, “Ok, let’s start a business. What could the business be?” And it became an art gallery. It was fun, but it was always tight. If we had 15 people in there it felt packed to the brim. And now we’re in a much, much bigger, comfier setting where there will be actual seats and tables. People can hang out, it’ll have Wifi, and we’re having really great coffee and pastries, but still treating it like a serious art gallery and having a full roster of shows lined up for 2012. Great! When is your grand opening in the new space? This coming Saturday [January 7, 2012]. The first show is Mark Mothersbaugh, the lead singer of DEVO, and we’re doing a show of these rugs that he does. For years, ever since he started the band, he’s

Local very quickly. We didn’t have a long, drawn-out business plan for what we were doing at all. So we had no idea, and we just had a certain number of artists on our wish list thinking, “Oh, wouldn’t it be cool…” I had no idea that if you track somebody down, just contact them, and try to arrange a show, often it’s been a positive experience. People have been willing, and we have been able to make these things happen where we thought we were shooting very high, but we were able to pull it off. The first show we opened was Jad Fair from the band Half Japanese, and that was back in April 2011. I was always a fan of his music and his art, and found his contact information through his email. the documentary about him at a movie theater up the street. It was just so great because we were really showing that movie to people that were being introduced to not only him, but really that whole world of cassette culture, indie, unusual artists. To a more mainstream audience, it was really eye opening, and everybody was just blown away by it. You know, you mentioned your wish list of artists. Who’s number one on that wish list? Well, in terms of people that we have not yet been able to book… I want to do a show of David Lynch’s artwork, and I haven’t yet closed that deal. Also, not for his art, but Russell Simmons runs the Rush Art Foundation, where they develop younger, inner-city artists, and we are trying to see if we could maybe offer our space…having a solo show here could be something that a young artist could win as a prize. I was pursuing Bob Pollard from Guided by Voices because he does this great collage art, but I think he’s busy with the band for 2012, so that didn’t happen. When you originally drew up your wish list, did you already manage to book the person that was number one on that first list? In all ways, we’re not nearly that organized. What I mean by drawing up a wish list, it’s just in my head and out in the ether, so it’s a constantly evolving wish list. I hear you! What makes an artist really attractive to you, to invite them to come to BLAST? I think Daniel Johnston and the last show would probably be a great example of an artist that creates and is living in their whole entire world. So rather than just saying, “Those are watercolor paintings,” or, “These are minimalist, geometric paintings,” you’re brought into a whole world where an artist has developed his own language, a history. Screaming Females at the Meatlocker written By estaban sanchez // fake walls New Brunswick’s finest Screaming Females made an appearance at Montclair’s Meat Locker this past Saturday, May 15th. The New Brunswick group performed probably their best and longest set I’ve seen them play yet. They recently just finished recording their follow-up to 2009’s Power Move. No word on a title or release date for their new LP yet, but you can read more about it at their blog. The indie/punk trio head out on a full US tour tomorrow, which concludes with a full week of dates with NJ’s own Ted Leo. You can find all of those dates on their Myspace.

Sparta’s Future Future were also on Saturday nights bill. The group is currently one of the best undiscovered bands coming out of NJ yet. Their song “10,000 Ft of Snow” is featured on our Sounds of NJ compilation, which just came out today. Be sure to download the song for free. Also, check out all of their upcoming shows here. Old Wives and Baby Pilot opened the show as well. ^ (l-r) King Mike, Jarrett Dougherty, Marissa Paternoster

Pizza & Drone

in Poughkeepsie

written By Jennifer Gutman // Chronogram

Pizza came in shifts at My Place Pizza in Poughkeepsie last Monday. The owner, Patrick Fitzgerald, was only making fresh pies in between sets. For the rest of the night, he was nestled into one of his classic red pizza parlor booths along with the other 20 or so people who were gathered in the back of the dark narrow room.

This wasn’t your typical night of music in the Hudson Valley. There were no swanky cocktails (it’s BYOB if you’re so inclined) or even a stage to separate the musicians from the crowd. The show wasn’t publicized much beyond a Facebook event page. But when you walked into the back of the dark parlor, the excitement for the music to come was palpable. Fitzgerald, tall, dark, and lean in a Frank Zappa sort of way, bought the 35-year-old building last summer, and he’s been hosting shows since October. A musician himself, Fitzgerald was looking for a way to combine his work with his passion, and, since most other pizza places close early in the business district of Poughkeepsie, he saw the potential of keeping his place open late and filling it with musicians looking for a space to play. “I like to let things develop as they may,” says Fitzgerald. “We say yes to whoever says they can put on a show here.” This makes for diverse and unpredictable line-ups, often within a given night, as was the case this past Monday. My partner Tom and I arrived a little after the 7:15 starting time, so we missed the opening band, Candle Hoax, a guy by the name of Jake Becvar making really pretty, shoegazy instrumental melodies. (I know it’s pretty because I listened to the songs on his bandcamp page.) The first band that went on after we got there was Thickly Painted Walls, who played a 20-minute long aggressive noise set that opened with a scatting trumpet and ended on some gentle notes, but was harsh and largely inaccessible in between. A super highenergy shred punk band touring from Florida came next. Permanent

wrap up Makeup, a trio made up of two guitarists and a fiery red-haired female drummer, shared that they were worried they wouldn’t sweat after leaving Florida, but worked up a good one during this performance. The real show stealer, though, was the closing act, Harbour, a lo-fi drone duo. Damian Cleary’s electric-guitar mastery was matched by Jonas Bers’s string work on his stand-up bass, which he crafted out of a white PVC pipe. When Bers wasn’t playing the pipe, he worked a series of pedals and mixers. The resulting reverb was oceanic—achieving waves in sound that mimicked the motions of the tides. Some moments were rip-tide thrilling, others like the lullaby of idling waters. “I was entranced literally by that,” says Fitzgerald of the Harbour performance. “That was totally awesome.” And he didn’t have to look far to find it. Bers is a Rosendale resident, as was Cleary until his recent move to Connecticut. “I believe the local music we have is just as good as anything you hear anywhere,” says Fitzgerald, who has been living in the Hudson Valley for 20 years. “I like to celebrate what’s real to me, and what’s real to me is the people I see in real life—not people who do things way far away.” This means even giving musicians who are still crafting their skills the opportunity to play. “Sometimes you have to go through learning and

people at different stages, and that’s beautiful as well,” says Fitzgerald. “I embrace it all and get the benefits of the unexpected.” The Harbour show was free, which is SOP at My Place Pizza. Some bands charge a cover, in which case all of the money goes to the band, not to Fitzgerald. You can just give him a couple of dollars for a slice.

pearing in a blink of an eye). The staff is friend, well knowledgeable and you won’t find any High Fidelity Jack Black characters behind the counter! The staff and owners have given me great recommendations and have lead me to discover great stuff that I’d not have taken the chance and purchased on my own at other record stores (case being the 2012 CD or vinyl release by Silent Servant). The store specializes mainly in vinyl and cassettes and you won’t find many compact discs here. That’s okay because the vinyl and cassette purchases that I’ve made here have gone a long way so far and I hold closer to heart as it’s nice holding vinyl and newly released cassettes again. I have to give a shout out to the cassette only label Living Tapes as the 3 Living Tapes that I’ve purchased from Mount Analog are amazing and special already. Thanks guys for opening up closer to home.
