a Word From your Publisher Mardi Gras 2019 wrapped up a whole new Mardi Gras experience for me! With many krewes inviting me to their Mardi Gras Balls, I had to find some that fit into my schedule to attend. I had my first Ball experience attending the Krewe of Good Times ball. In preparing for the ball I had to first find the perfect Mardi Gras Ball gown. I did so by going to Bayou a Dress for Less in Lake Charles, where they help me find the perfect dress. The dress made me feel much like Cinderella must have felt in her dress attending her first ball. It only took me one glance in the mirror to know it was the one! Next, I took this opportunity to go to a professional makeup artist for my evening’s makeup. I called up Shaunteal Blommers-Prejean for my full makeup experience. Shaunteal has recently been the head makeup artist of New York Fashion Week and other national events. After getting your makeup done by her, you’ll know why she was chosen for these big events … she’s very detailed and patient, she is also great at finding your perfect look and will teach you some secrets to applying your own makeup. I was very pleased with my results from our session. I also left there with the makeup she used in hand, (she carries her own line of makeup) and I’ve been using it since! I attended my first ball with my husband, Scott, and of course fashionably late, (things get hectic with 5 little ones at home when you are going out). We walked in as they were preparing to introduce the royalty. Not knowing what door to enter through, we accidently walked in the wrong doors and they spotlight us. We scurried out of the spotlight as quickly as possible and had a good laugh about it later on with some of the krewe! A good time was had by all, we made new friends and saw old ones that night. We left the ball around midnight and as luck would have it, without losing my glass slipper … but Scott lost a tray of sandwiches! The very next weekend I had the opportunity to attend La Famille’s Ball at the Civic Center in Lake Charles. This was a first-class experience and I enjoyed every second of it! The presentation was spectacular, and the entertainment was out of this world! Of course, I had to go find another gown at Bayou a Dress for Less … a girl can’t wear the same dress to www.mardigrasmagazine.net
a ball in the same year, right? This year I’ve shaken things up a bit with many changes to our magazine! Not only does the magazine come out after Mardi Gras, we have a blog post that comes out first. Each Krewe getting their own blog post separately. As everything is switching to the internet this is a good way to share the posts with your friends and family on your social medias. The blog posts can be done as early as you like prior to the release of the magazine (I think most would get theirs in just after their ball). We will offer two different prices now, one for the magazine and blog post combined and one for just the blog post that will be cheaper and more affordable for krewes that have a hard time coming up with the cost for the magazine. The blog posts also allow you to include images in a slide show that can’t fit in the magazine layout, giving a much fuller picture of what your krewe is all about and the fun had during the year. We’ve also started giving out awards this year. We have 5 different categories that we judge on during the Krewe of Krewe parade. Judges from out of town that aren’t affiliated with any of the krewes, judge from along the sidelines of the parade (this year located at Daley’s Boxing Studio, due to a parade route change). All winners are announced in the magazine and awards will be handed out before the release of the magazine due to this … not to spoil the excitement of the award recipients. Our overall winner will get the following year’s magazine cover as the top prize. I’d like to say congratulations to each and every one that took home an award this year and our top prize winner of the 2020 Mardi Gras Magazine cover. We are looking forward to expanding upon our awards to include monetary prizes for the 2020 Mardi Gras season, please stay tuned to our Facebook page for more information on this. Remember, only krewes that are part of the magazine and or blog posts will be included in our judging for consideration of the awards to make things fair. We will also be announcing things throughout the year that pertain to Mardi Gras and the upcoming season. If you have an event or fund raiser you’d like to announce please contact us on Facebook messenger, we can help spread the word to make your event more successful. Until the big 2020 Mardi Gras season is upon us, I hope you continue to let the good times roll … Laissez les bons temps rouler.

a Word From Lauran ~ Time flies. I simply cannot believe that this is my fourteenth Mardi Gras! And after all these years, it has never, ever lost its dazzle and excitement. Every year is a new party, a new chance to celebrate as only Louisianans can. I remember the first ball I ever attended: Bon Couer at Habibi Temple. I was mesmerized. All these folks dressed in their best, coming together to eat, drink, dance and just pass a good time. I was hooked. At one point, I belonged to three Krewes. Not only was I on Court for all of them, I was also a Queen--TWICE! It was an experience that I will never forget. Just think, a Yankee gal from Boston becomes a Mardi Gras Queen! Never in my wildest dreams as a little girl growing up in East Boston could I have imagined such a thing. It just goes to show you that life has so much to offer if we open our minds and hearts and embrace the journey. In my years as publisher of The Jambalaya News, I was most proud of our annual Mardi Gras issue highlighting the Courts and Krewes of Southwest Louisiana. The 2018 issue promises to be better than ever in its new, glossy format. A special thank you to all of the Krewes who participated this year, and I wish the Kings and Queens and Royal Courts a marvelous reign in 2018! Happy Mardi Gras!!

A Message from Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter. “We are very proud of our local Mardi Gras, which brings people to Southwest Louisiana from all over the country. Mardi Gras in Southwest Louisiana is a communitywide celebration and a family affair. Over the years, it has grown remarkably into the standout festival it is today—the second largest in the state! My very best wishes to all for a safe and memorable 2018 Mardi Gras in Lake Charles and all of Southwest Louisiana.” www.mardigrasmagazine.net

Iowa Chicken Run Experience an authentic Cajun Mardi Gras by riding in a hay ride chasing after a chicken. You will stop at different homes along the way and toe-tap to Zydeco to receive the ingredients for the gumbo. The parade goes west on Hwy 90 stopping at local businesses and continues going through neighborhoods with the horses following behind. The captain blows his whistle at participating homes for the crews to get down and dance to zydeco music, which is played with an accordion and scrub board. If the families approve the dancing skills, they donate ingredients to the gumbo, and a chicken is thrown into the air. Sometimes the captain will throw multiple chickens in the air several times or more for the children to catch. Begins at KC Hall: 503 E. Hwy 90 Iowa, LA 70647 The entry fee is $10 at the door for adults. The entry fee for children 12 and under is $5.

By Tiffany Casey There Once Was a Kitchen Table
Ingredients
16 oz. sour cream 1/3 cup sugar ¼ cup butter 1 teaspoon salt 2 (1/4 oz. envelopes active dry yeast) 1 tablespoon sugar 2 large eggs, lightly beaten About 6-7 cups of flour 1/3 cup softened butter ½ cup sugar 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon Directions
Add the first four items to a medium saucepan and stir over a low heat until they are well-combined. Let cool and put to the side. In a Pyrex measuring cup, add ½ cup warm water, one tablespoon sugar and the two envelopes of yeast. Let stand for five minutes. In a mixer, beat the sour cream mixture, yeast mixture, eggs, and two cups of flour until smooth. While mixer is on low, add the remainder of the flour (four-five cups) a cup at a time until a soft dough forms (you may not use all of your flour or you may use it all). Turn dough out onto a well-floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic for at least 10 minutes. Place in a well-greased bowl, making sure to grease the top. Cover and let rise about one hour. Should double in size. Punch down dough and turn out onto lightly floured surface. Divide into two equal pieces. Roll each piece into a LONG rectangle (about 20 inches) and about 10 inches wide. Spread 1/3 cup butter evenly on each piece leaving an inch border. Sprinkle ½ cup sugar and cinnamon over buttered pieces. Mix ¾ cup sugar, two packages of cream cheese, one large egg, and vanilla to taste until smooth. Spread some of the cream cheese mixture evenly on each piece. Some people may just use the cinnamon sugar and some just the cream cheese mixture; I like both. Roll up each piece lengthwise, like a jelly roll. Moisten and pinch the seams, being careful not to tear. Carefully twist the two together and shape into a “crown.” Place on greased baking sheet. Allow to rise once more for about 20-30 minutes. Bake at 375 for about 20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool cake and then drizzle generously with Royal Icing and sprinkle colored sugar on top of the wet icing. Add a PLASTIC baby and there you have it! If placing a plastic baby in the cake AFTER it is baked, make sure to let everyone know – no one wants to choke on a King Cake baby!! www.mardigrasmagazine.net

Krewe de Carnivale’ celebrated Mardi Gras in grand and glorious style at the Lake Charles Civic Center’s Exhibition Hall on February 9. The Krewe chose “Carnivale’ of Games” as the theme for their annual Mardi Gras mega-party. The event was a costumeoptional ball with guests and members alike transforming themselves into characters portraying all things related to games. For the evening, the guests entered through a kaleidoscopic, vividly colored chamber into a festively decorated ballroom. Members and guests were dressed in elegant attire as well as elaborate costumes depicting a wide array of characters. Ball Captain Steven Lane served as the Master of Ceremonies as he signaled the start of the Krewe’s Second Line procession into the ballroom. The introduction of Royalty kicked off the evening with the presentation of the King and Queen of Krewe de Carnivale’ 2019, Marshall Trahan and Margaret McCloskey DeStout portraying King and Queen of Carnivale’ Medieval Games of Intrigue. The Captain then offered a traditional toast to the members and guests. Ball Captain Steven Lane was born in Oroville, California, raised in central Louisiana and has resided in Lake Charles for over 20 years. He is the son of Robert and Amy Lane and currently works as Inventory Manager at Sabine Pools. King Marshall Trahan was born and raised in Welsh and currently resides in Jennings where he serves his community as a patrol deputy for the Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff's Office. He is the proud youngest son of Joseph and Betty Trahan. Queen Margaret McCloskey DeStout is a native of Eunice and has been a resident of Lake Charles since 1992. Margaret retired in 2016 following a 28-year career as a business owner in the field of home care. Upon retirement, Margaret returned to school to study public health administration. She is married to Paul DeStout and between them they have five children, John, Michael (Karli) and Hannah McCloskey, and Alexandra and Joanna DeStout. Recently, Margaret www.mardigrasmagazine.net

tried quite unsuccessfully to start an herb garden followed by a disastrous and dangerous pursuit of stained glass. She finally settled on a much easier hobby of acrylic painting. Until one of their children bestows a grandchild upon her, Margaret will continue to dote on her pups Rudy, Lilly and Moe. The Captain, along with the King and Queen, would like to thank everyone who helped to make the evening so memorable. Krewe de Carnivale’ has two traditions unique to the area. First is the bead toss where Krewe members take to the stage several times during the evening to electrify the party crowd by tossing beads and trinkets to chants of “Throw me something mister!” The other tradition is to cap off the evening with the napkin toss where guests are invited to pitch thousands of paper napkins in the air while the disco classic “Love is in the Air” plays on. Krewe de Carnivale was established in 2000 by a group of friends that wanted to celebrate Mardi Gras in a slightly different manner, emphasizing the fun, enjoyable and carefree elements of previously attended celebrations. They live a life of Chaos but for the past 25 years he has truly experienced it on stage with “The Bayou Boys.” The Duke and Duchess of the Eiffel Tower were Kimberly and Robbie Russo. From Vinton and Lake Charles, they have been married for 11 years and have three children. The Duke has his bachelor’s degree in mass communication and is an operator at Firestone Polymers. He is also owner of a media/marketing company. In his spare time, he loves to work out. The Duchess has a bachelor’s degree from McNeese State in management and marketing and a minor in speech communication. She is the creator and owner of “Kookies by Kim” and a travel agent for @Holiday Travel. She enjoys baking and party planning. In their spare time, the Duke and Duchess love to spend time with their children and share their passion for photography, videography and traveling. They once experienced Chaos while traveling the road to Hana in Hawaii, but the real Chaos Robbie loves is being the EMCEE for the Krewe! King Chaos XIV and Queen Gaea XIV were JD and Stephanie Hankins. His Royal Highness was born in Shreveport, grew up in Lake Charles and graduated from Barbe High School. After getting his bachelor’s degree in management and marketing at McNeese State University, he went on to get his master’s degree in business at the University of Houston. Krewe de Gratin Celebrates Hollywood Style
This year, Krewe de Gratin celebrated their annual Ball Hollywood Style at Delta Downs in Vinton on February 2. For the last two years, Delta Downs has accommodated this Krewe with everything they need to have memories that will last a lifetime.
sweetheart 32 years ago and has three children, Lacy, Samantha, and Luke. He said the actor that best describes him is Clint Eastwood because he speaks his mind and is always ready for someone to make his day! He was escorted by his wife, Elva.
The 2019 Academy Awards King and Queen were Randy Paul Leach and Shawn Vassar. King Randy was born and raised in Vinton and met his Kim Kardashian at a family function at his parent’s mansion. They married and now have two kids, Avery and Landry. He loves to fish and hunt. When asked who in Hollywood represents him the most, He said Bruce Willis, because everyone wants to be in a Christmas movie. And Die Hard is the best Christmas movie ever? He was escorted by the person he admires the most in the world, his wife Brook.
Duchess Samantha has some “family ties” with the Duke. She met her spouse at her sister’s middle school movie party. She is a fertility care practitioner and apparently a very good one since she has four kids: Isabela, Wyatt, Joie, and Weston. One of the craziest things she has done is climb a cliff in Hawaii and nearly getting knocked down and drowned by crashing waves! She said the movie star that best describes her is Zoey Deschanel because of her happy-go-lucky personality and because she loves food. She was escorted by her husband Brent,
Queen Shawn was born and raised in Vinton and got a prestigious degree from Vinton High School. She has three children, Jake, Gannen, and Emily and says her husband is the most admirable person she knows because it takes a special man to marry a woman and love her children like she loves them. Awww… When asked who would best represent her in Hollywood, she said Sandra Bullock, because she is caring and charitable. The Queen was escorted by her star-studded husband Richie.
The Duke and Duchess of the Emmys were Shaun Trahan and Heather Matthews. The Emmys represent American excellence in television and have been around since 1949. The next Duke and Duchess are no exception to excellence or watching TV, but we’re pretty sure they haven’t been around since 1949! The Duke was raised in Vinton and is a process operator at W. R. Grace. He love to cook, play guitar, spend time with family and watch the LSU Tigers. The Duchess was raised in Bridge City, TX and is a teacher. She loves to bake, decorate cookies, and watch LSU football with family. Sounds like a match made in Hollywood! The Duke thinks he’s most like Adam Sandler because he is hilarious and loves to make people laugh, and the Duchess says she’s like Audrey Hepburn because of her loving and nurturing personality.
The Duke and Duchess of the Oscars were Craig Stine and Samantha Dommert. The Oscars are awards for artistic and technical merit in the film industry. The first Duke may not have been in this industry, but he sure could teach Hollywood a thing or two about relationships. He married his high school www.mardigrasmagazine.net

Golden-Globed Duchess Stacie (and we mean that in the most respectable manner), was born and raised in Sulphur. She met her spouse in her college days at the prestigious McNeese State University. She has two children and potential stars, Rhett and Kalli. She enjoys spending time with her family and watching her son play sports. Presents A Mystical Evening of Arabian Nights
On March 2, the Krewe des Gens Extraordinaire presented “A Mystical Evening with Arabian Nights” where they celebrated 24 years of Royalty. The Buccaneer Room at the Lake Charles Civic Center was transformed into a vibrant and beautiful ballroom comparable only to the Taj Mahal. The Krewe bid farewell to King Rellis Chavis and Queen Johnnie Belle Chavis and their Royal Court of 2018 that celebrated the “Festivals of Louisiana.” The National Anthem was sung by Carnegie Hallbound Lagrange High School Senior Jakylyn Bowers as he serenaded the audience with his smooth vocals. He is also the winner of the Martin Luther King essay. The color guard was presented by Major Floyd with Washington Marion High School ROTC. The 2019 Royal Court was led by President Johnnie Belle Chavis and 2019 Ball Captain Carlos Metoyer. need for businesses along the Nellie Lutcher Pkwy (N. Enterprise Blvd.), Michael and Nikki opened Spice’s Mardi Gras Hut in 2016, offering a “little something different” in the arena of the famous Cajun spicy boiled seafood. Currently, they are in their third successful crawfish season, where they plan to use this platform to add value to our community. “As King and Queen, we are honored and excited to represent the Krewe des Gens Extraordinaire’s 2019 Royal Court, along with celebrating with local Krewes during the Mardi Gras festivities.” ~Michael and Donna “Nikki” Fontenot
The Krewe was excited to host their guests while they socialized and enjoyed the elegant decorations. The Royal Toast and Promenade preceded a night of Second Lines and Royal pageantry. Krewe members entertained guests with a tribute to the late, great Aretha Franklin. Ann Minor brought back awesome memories with the song “Respect” and Relina Malveaux showed why she was Queen of Soul with the song “Jump.” Members and their guests danced the night away to the electrifying sounds of Hotline, a live band from Opelousas. Krewe du Grand Bois Presents Grease
Krewe du Grand Bois celebrated their 39th annual Mardi Gras Ball on March 1 at Habibi Temple in Moss Bluff with the theme “Grease.” King Danny and Queen Sandy of Grande Bois High were Gary and Tracy Melancon. King Danny and Queen Sandy had chills that were multiplying and were hopelessly devoted to making the Ball an amazing night for everyone. Gary is the son of longtime and dedicated Krewe member Ann Melancon and the late Leonard Melancon. Gary and Tracy both graduated from Sam Houston High School and first met at a dance at St. Theodore’s in 1982 when Tracy was 16. She was smitten; Gary played hard to get, as Danny did in Grease. Residents of Santa Fe, Texas for 30 years, Gary has been the key accounts manager for BK Power systems for 31 years, and Tracy has been a registered dental assistant for the last 30 years. They have been married for 34 years and have two amazing daughters, Amy and Megan, along with four Royal grandchildren, Zoe, Adilynn, Connor, and Liam. They enjoy spending time with their family as well taking cruises. Gary likes to hunt, and fish and Tracy is an avid runner who has competed in at least 40 races including 20 half marathons. Is there any wonder why Gary wanted Tracy in those tight black hot pants at the beginning of the show? The Melancons have been members of the Krewe since 2010. The Duke and Duchess of the Drag Race, Kenickie and Rizzo, were Sean and Tessa Vidrine. Duke Sean is the son of Krewe President Sara Vidrine, graduated from Westlake High School and is still looking to “race for pinks” from anyone who will take him on. Duchess Tessa graduated from Hackberry High School and wanted to get her kicks while she was young enough to get ‘em. The Vidrines are owners of Lake Area Countertop Supply in Moss Bluff and S&B Capital, a real estate investment company. They have been married for 17 years and have two sons, Kayden and Christian. They enjoy hanging with friends, camping, fishing, boating, and going to concerts. They are www.mardigrasmagazine.net
also involved with ACTS and Sean is an accomplished musician. The Vidrines are brand-new members of the Krewe. Duke and Duchess of the Drive-In, Sonny and Marty, were Jaysen and Tracy Dautriel. Jaysen is a lot like Sonny as he can be seen spiking the punch with whatever is in his flask. We were lucky we could find Marty for the presentation, as it seems she had been canoodling with Vince Fontaine backstage for quite awhile. Duke Jaysen is a graduate of Westlake High School and Duchess Tracy is a graduate of Sam Houston High School. Although they attended rival schools, it seems that they were hopelessly devoted to one another. Jaysen owns and operates Dautriel’s plumbing, while Tracy traded in her status as a “one-woman USO” and is now a systems coordinator for Westlake City Hall. They have been married for 25 years and have two daughters, Caitlyn and Trisha, along with three grandchildren, Kooper, Charlie, and Josie. Tracy enjoys shopping and reading and Jaysen likes to hunt. Together, they enjoy spending time with family and friends and fishing. The Dautriels are brand-new Krewe members. The Duke and Duchess of the Jukebox, Putzie and Jan, were Nelson and Teri Mire. Nelson is a graduate of LaGrange High School while Teri is a Yankee from New York. Nelson has worked for 36 years at LNG facilities and has been employed at Cameron LNG since 2007. He is no longer the T-Bird nerd at Grande Bois High. Teri graduated from McNeese with a Nursing degree and is currently a Registered Nurse with Nurse Family Partnerships. She and Nelson go together like ra-ma la-ma la-ma ka ding-a ding-a dong. They’ll always be together. They have been married for 27 years and have a blended family with five children and eight grandchildren. Nelson and Teri enjoy traveling, going to the beach, dancing, eating out, meeting new people, and spending time at their camp on the river. She and Nelson have been Members of Krewe du Grande Bois for the last 20 years but have been attending the annual ball for 28 years! Duke and Duchess of the Malt Shop, Doody and Frenchy, were Sam and Denise Hebert. The Duchess is definitely not a beauty school dropout, and both were “pros” at being Doody and Frenchy this year. Duke Sam attended Lake Charles High and McNeese State University. You may know him from this phrase, “Perhaps we should talk” or tonight, “Perhaps we should dance!” He is owner of Sam Hebert Financial Group. Denise was born in New York City and moved to Lake Charles when she was 13. She is a graduate of Barbe High School and McNeese State University. Denise has an amazing 48

talent for photography and is the Krewe Historian. The Duke and Duchess have been married for 39 years and have three children: Elizabeth, Kayla, and Brian. The Hebert’s have been Krewe members for many years and served on the Grande Bois Court several times, including King and Queen in 2011.
Sam and Denise Hebert
Captains Leo and Cha Cha were Bobby and Debbie Kershaw. If "Grease is the word," “Grease” is what it took for Bob to slide Debbie into his life. Debbie stole Bob’s heart when she pulled a lock of hair from her chest at Thunder Road when she and Bobby married 14 years ago. Debbie is the daughter of longtime Krewe member Ann Melancon and the late Leonard Melancon. Krewe du Lapin Martele Travels to the Orient
Krewe du Lapin Martele represented Iowa, Louisiana by traveling around the globe for its second annual Ball held February 23rd at the KC Hall in Iowa, Louisiana. Iowa has a long history of honoring the rabbit industry and what it has contributed to the Krewe’s little hometown. Hence the Krewe name, which translates into “hammered rabbit.” The Krewe has a great time while representing and giving back to Iowa by volunteering their time to St. Jude’s fundraiser and other town events. This year, the Krewe traveled to the Orient! In Asian culture, the dragon is a symbol of power, strength, and good luck for people who are worthy. Therefore, it is fitting that this year, the King and Queen reigning over the ball were their majesties Dragon King Fred Petticrew and Dragon Queen Lori Petticrew. Both originally from Iowa, Fred and Lori were engaged on Halloween night, have been married for 25 years and have a daughter, Lauren, 17. Fred has worked for Calcasieu Parish School Board for 27 years and Lori has worked for Bolton Ford for 23 years. The Queen enjoys painting and reading. They attend First United Methodist Church in Iowa and enjoy hanging out with family and friends. They hope to travel to Ireland and Scotland one day. They Royal Couple will lead the Krewe in assuring that the ball and season will be safe and fun this year. www.mardigrasmagazine.net

The celebration began with the Ball Captain, Hydee Veillon, posing as a Voodoo Witch Doctor. Born in the Philippines, she graduated from Hackberry High School. Currently, she and her husband own The Cajun’s Wharf Grill and Bar and she is a member of the Calcasieu Boat Club and the Buccaneers. Her passions are traveling and party planning from hosting poker runs, employee parties, birthday parties, holiday shindigs and an occasional wedding. In 12 years, she plans to have no kids at home, no permanent address and to not have any more goals other than Life is Good. Duke Zebra and Duchess Peacock were Patrick and Cathryn Bordelon. The couple reside in Lake Charles with their adorable 3-year-old daughter. The Duke has been a deputy with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s office for the past 18 years where he currently protects and serves with the crime scene forensics. His hobbies include fishing and duck hunting, and he is an exuberant LSU fan and has a not-so-secret love of reality TV. The Duchess is the proud owner of Cathryn’s Florals and Arts as a licensed florist and decorator. She also lends her creative talents to CSE Federal Credit Union where she opens new accounts and is the celebrity voice for their commercials and phone system. She enjoys running jug lines, loves spending time with her family and volunteers many hours of her time to help with all the Krewe Ball decorations.
The Royal Queen is a Sulphur transplant from West Monroe. She has two sons and two stepchildren with beautiful families of their own. She loves being outdoors, travel, golf and staying physically fit. Her photo was chosen for the cover of a nationwide Crossfit calendar called Deadlifts and Dresses. She helps to raise breast cancer awareness as her mom is a two-time survivor. As a member of the Southwest Louisiana Chive Chapter, she organizes fundraisers locally and nationally. She has been employed with Edward Jones as a branch office administrator for 17 years. In addition to being an avid Star Wars nerd, she loves to go to car shows, dress in costumes and previously served as a Krewe Duchess. She is also a proud LSU Tiger Mom. The Krewe toasted their 2019 Royalty and kicked off the night performing the Second Line parade. Live entertainment was provided by the first cover band to be inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, New Orleans Super Pop group “Bag of Donuts.” Special thanks to Deep South Productions for providing the sound and lighting, Simple Memories for the photography, master of ceremonies Justin Morris, all the Krewe members and guests for their attendance and lastly, the hardworking board of directors for laboring all year to make this Krewe amazing: Tab Finchum, Misty Finchum, Kari Felice, Russie Rogers, Monica Lafleur, John Watkins, Brandon Walker, Randy Favre, Brittany Nash and John Thomson.

THE GENESIS OF KREWE of MADNESS Krewe of Madness made their debut into the Mardi Gras community on January 26, celebrating their Inaugural Ball held at the Lake Charles Civic Center Buccaneer Room. It was a black-tie event where guests enjoyed a delicious dinner and an evening filled with music that kept the dance floor packed. Krewe of Madness wants to celebrate what Mardi Gras means to them…. breaking away from the customary traditions and creating their own. You've seen the parades, collected the beads, and have even gotten your hands on some authentic Mardi Gras King Cake in all of its green, purple, and gold glory. While these colors have a rich history in Mardi Gras, Krewe of Madness re-invents what the colors represent for them. The re-invented colors, Emerald, Amethyst, and Dazzling Gold, are what inspired their forever Ball and Royal Court theme. The night started off with the Master of Ceremonies, Brandon Martin, introducing the President, Heather Fontenot and Vice President, Kandis Poissot. The two Founding Mothers welcomed the crowd, talked about how this new Krewe came to fruition, and introduced their board members and fellow Founding Mothers. They include Chelsea Andrus, Founding Mother and Krewe Social Director; Chance Marquez, Founding Mother and Parade Director; Lauren Kallenbach, Krewe Secretary; and Kelly Willis, Krewe Ball Director. The emcee took over from there and highlighted the vibrancy of Mardi Gras and the meanings behind these re-invented regal colors as he introduced their very first Royal Court. The presentation began with the introduction of this year’s Debutante, Kaitlyn Simmons, escorted by her father, Brandon Simmons. She is the granddaughter of Krewe members Trina and BJ Miller. Symbolizing life and new beginnings, the Duke and Duchess of Emerald, Justin & Courtney Lowry, represented the establishment of the Krewe. The newlyweds reside in Moss Bluff and share four children. The Duchess has been a hairstylist for 10 years and currently works at K & Co. Hair Salon. The Duke is an agent for Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. Symbolizing Grandeur and Extravagance, the Duke and Duchess of Amethyst, Hunter and Miranda Esthay, represented the core of what the Krewe stands for: an over-the-top party. The Duke and Duchess have been married for two years and reside in Moss Bluff. They are the proud parents of a beautiful baby girl, Holland Marie. The Duchess is an administrative assistant at Imperial Calcasieu Surgical www.mardigrasmagazine.net
Center, while the Duke has worked as an instrument supervisor at TRIAD for five years. “In a mad world, only the mad are sane.” The 2019 King and Queen of Madness were Mr. & Mrs. William “BJ” and Christina “Trina” Miller. The King and Queen of Madness will have rule over all that is debaucherous and mad, such is the spirit of Mardi Gras. The King and Queen were adorned with accents of dazzling gold symbolizing prosperity, longevity and unity. They have been happily married for 15 years and together they have seven children and 19 grandchildren. The Royal Couple reside in the wonderful community of Johnson Bayou where they attend Johnson Bayou Baptist Church and own and operate Johnson Bayou RV park. The King is a maintenance supervisor at Cheniere LNG while the Queen spends her days managing their business. Together, they are always willing to lend a helping hand. They love what they do and who they do it for. Music, sound and lighting were provided by the talented Derek Miller with Big South Productions. Court and guest photography was handles by Davenna Trahan with Davenna Lea Photography, and everyone enjoyed a delicious meal by Kelly Willis with Cajun Cafe. Krewe of Madness was chartered in February 2018 with a group of ladies who like to call themselves The Founding Mothers.

He currently resides in Vinton and has been employed in the elevator industry for 28 years, currently with Schindler’s Corp.
